The only sound present was the russle of the paper bag she was carrying her Chinese food dinner in. "How odd." Agent Rosalyn thought. "Where is the whistle of the wind threw my balcony door?" She had been meaning to get that fixed for months, but she was rarely at home. Basically, it was just a place to sleep and store her few belongings.

She didn't think much more on it, but in the back of her mind she was on alert. She walked over to the computer near the window expecting to do some more research while eating her Chow Mein.

The armored inquisitor, Matamoros, stood leaning against the guard rails of the balcony. Agent Rosalyn's movements did not escape his observation as he watched her enter and take her seat at a computer. Apparently she did not see him, for it had already grown dark outside and there was no light illuminating the balcony. As he continued to watch her, Matamoros noticed water speckling on his visor. He looked up and saw that a light rain was picking up.

Lowering his head back towards the glass door of the balcony, he took hold of the handle and blatantly walked in, speaking as he did so. "So, is it treason again," he said, nodding towards the computer, "or more heresy?"

(sorry for the delay...was gonna post earlier but apparently the forums were down for "maintenance" )

((no worries...just wanted to let you know I am anxiously awaiting the replies. ))

Rosalyn swivled around in the computer chair, dropping her chinese food and chopsticks as she did so. The visitor was inside the apartment with one quick swift motion. The rain started to soak the carpet as he entered.

"To what do I owe this visit? If I had known you were coming, I would have gotten another set of chopsticks." She was caught off guard, but didn't intend to be vunerable. While she distracted him with conversation, she jumped to her feet and started backing up toward the door. She had no desire to fight, if it came to that. What could he want that Physik's hadn't already provided? ((She has no clue she's being fingered as the traitor...the innocent never do.))

She activitated a button on her lapel that would communicate their conversation to the team channel. She could only hope the others were listening and rush to help.

----------------------

The red light on Clarisa's desk phone blinked. Clarisa looked at the caller id...it was Agent Rosalyn's signal from the team channel being rerouted. She stabbed the speakerphone button and it crackled to life with the sounds of Rosalyn's apartment. She could hear rain pelting glass and the sound of a familar male voice. Normally, she would respond instantly but she didn't dare. Rosalyn could be setting a trap now that she was found to be the traitor. No, Clarisa would wait to hear what was going on before reacting.

With the greatest of grace, Matamoros bowed, lowering his right arm across his abdomen. "I, my dear," he said introducing himself, "am an 'agent' as well, you could say. Call me 'Matamoros.'" He straightened up again, adjusting his assault rifle strap. "You're lucky, heretic, for I'm not here to kill you...yet, anyway..."

Matamoros paced around the apartment living him, his eyes remained locked on her at all times. "What exactly did you steal from Physiks and why? Who are you working for? Illuminati? Children of Sin? Hell, are you matriarchal blasphemers breaking the truce and making a direct attack on the Church itself? Tell me, or else," he balled his fist, his knuckles cracking, "I might have to FORCE it out of you."

A fully-bellied laugh broke the silence in the apartment.

"What? Are you joking?" Rosalyn knew he wasn't joking, but this was ridiculus. He was questioning her like she would question the suspected traitor. She quickly regained her composure and the laugh melted into a serious knot on her brow.

"First of all, I would never betray Clarisa or Physiks, what on earth would make you think that? Second of all, my religious beliefs are not in conflict with my loyalty to Physiks, quite the opposite."

In all the excitement, her necklace had freed itself from its normal position under her suit and risen to the surface. It was an odd cross upon closer inspection...it had a golden inlay in the middle ruby...a "V".

Rosalyn was deeply troubled by Matamoros's accusations but even more so by his revalation of her background. No one knew of that, how did he find out so quickly? She kept her back to door but refused to back down. "I am prepared to fight for my innocence if I must."

Her fist glowed as if to show her fury. Physiks had bestowed on her the power to harness energy in her fight for justice alongside the heroes. Who would have guessed she would be fighting for her own justice. She awaited Matamoros's next move.

"Under normal circumstances, I would believe you because of your sincerity, but I tend not to believe heretics. Tell me, why should I believe someone who doesn't even have a loyalty to their own church?"

Matamoros sighed and paused for a moment, thinking to himself. "Apparently she is unware of the fact that she has been implicated as the traitor." he thought to himself. "I guess they didn't give you the courtesy of informing you. Makes sense, I guess. Maybe they want to catch you in the act or, perhaps, catch any possible co-conspirators." He saw that Rosalyn was getting a bit impatient with his ranting, so he got straight to the point. "You, my dear, have been implicated as the traitor. Physiks believes there is sufficient evidence to prove you as such. That is enough for Legion. Now it's merely our turn to do what we do.

Matamoros leaned to the side and slid his assault rifle strap off of his shoulder and dropped it to the ground with a loud thump. "I wish I could believe your innocence," he said as he glanced at her cross, which raised some anger within him, "but I know how YOU people are. You lie and deceive others for your own personal satisfaction and gain. You concoct fallacies merely to spite a church which refuses to bow before you."

Entering a lowered, defensive stance, he continues to speak. "I want you to know that, in doing this, I'm hurting my self moreso than you." He quickly drew a combat knife from his belt.

At the sight of Matamoros's combat knife, Agent Rosalyn's reflexes took over. She beckoned him forth with her right hand. "What do you know of heretics. Everything is black and white to Legion. If you would call me a heretic simply because I believe woman deserve a place in the church, then a heretic I am. Yet we believe in the same God, is that not enough for you?" She attempted to disorient Matamoros with a solid punch, but he dodged it deftly. Thus far, she wasn't fighting to harm him, just to keep him at bay until she could talk sense into him.

"My loyalty is to my employer. I would never betray Clarisa. What "evidence" do you have? Were any alternatives considered?" The tension in the room was high as the two attempted to gain the advantage over the other while having a "civil" discussion.

------------------

Clarisa slammed her fists down on the mahogany desk. "That's it! I can't just stay here listening to this." Rosalyn's words struck a cord with her. She believed there was a possibility that Rosalyn was innocent although the evidence was overwhelming. Clarisa opted to forgo the elevator and jumped out the window instead. Would she arrive in time? She may have waited to long already.

To Matamoros, her words sounded like truth, but he had already begun his 'interrogation' of her and couldn't simply put down his weapons and leave. If he did something like that, it would be a sign of weakness and he would lose his credibility both in Legion and 'on the streets.'

She had struck out against his face, but he had stepped to the side, avoiding it easily. "Surely she's holding back," he thought to himself.

"If all that matters to you is ultimately the belief in God, then why would you be so concerned with women being in positions of power? See, it's all a power-play to you people."

Matamoros threw several jabs at Rosalyn, each being easily blocked and parried aside. She returned with a upward punch towards his gut, bouncing him up slightly, but much of the impact was absorbed by his armor. Rosalyn was momentarily surprised, as if she had forgotten about the armor. She quickly recovered, but Matamoros had already taken advantage. He grabbed her arm, pulled her forward, then spun around and grabbed her from behind, placing the knife against her neck.

"Ask your 'beloved' Clarisa for the evidence. There wasn't exactly much evidence, but it was pretty damning. You can stop playing stupid now and just tell me who you're working for." He tapped the knife against her neck a few times as a reminder of his leverage over her.

Rosalyn gave a powerful elbow to the side of Matamoros, grabbed his arm, and quickly threw him off. Matamoros hit the ground hard, his armor adding weight to the impact. The knife now laid on the floor in front of Rosalyn and she casually picked it up.

"This display of power will only end in pain, yours or mine or both." Rosalyn stood straight and tall and held the knife on open palms offering it to Matamoros. "I will not fight an ally." She bowed her head in submission.

The sound of wood splitting could be heard at the front door. Two long cuts were made by the door handle and a stilletto heel freed the door from the lock. Clarisa burst forth.

"STOP!"

As the door burst open from Clarisa's efforts, Lady Gwenivere touched down on the same balcony that Matamoros had used to gain entry. She immediately went onto an alert stance, having recognized the supposed 'hero' in the red and gold armor, but didn't immediately place him as someone from Legion.

"Hold it right there, 'Matamoros'." An arrow was already nocked in her bow and the string pulled back, the shaft squarely aimed at the joint between his chest plastron and his helmet. "Your rather savage reputation precedes you... and right now I'm in no mood to clean up any mess of yours. Both of you, turn around, palms against the walls, NOW."

She nodded her head to Clarisa just slightly. "Hi, Boss. Gotta love the overtime in this job."

Matamoros' gaze first went to Clarisa as she barged in, but he turned his head immediately towards Gwenivere, considering she was the one pointing a weapon at him. His response to he threat was loud, almost villainous, laughter. It was full of confidence, nearly to the point of arrogance.

"Please," he said to her as he began to raise himself, "do not insult me with idle threats. You know damn well you won't kill me. That is precisely what separates us. I have the will to finish the job, while you simply drop responsibility for criminals on a weak and corrupt society."

After his rather insulting comments to Gwenivere, he turned his head back towards Clarisa. "Hello, Ms. Clarisa Feynman." At this point he had risen to one knee and was surrounded by powerful opponents. He might have been able to take on one, and, if luck was on his side, possibly two, but not all three. "So, what is it you intend to do with me?" He questioned mockingly.

Gwenivere raised a single eyebrow. "Just because I haven't killed in Paragon's service, doesn't mean I haven't killed. You know my 'history'. You care to gamble on MY 'will'?"

Matamoros was now looking straight down the arrow shaft at Gwen's steely gaze - she'd readjusted her aim to point it straight at his visor. The bowstring was pulled back to full draw, and judging by the weight of the bow, that arrow could possibly penetrate a solid oak door. The material of his helmet visor might deflect it... or it might not.

Suddenly Matamoros realized, this ... woman... was not bluffing, and was fully ready to kill him if he didn't heed her.

Agent Rosalyn was startled by the abrupt entrance of her colleagues. Upon seeing the bow drawn and aimed at Matamoros's head, she took a single step to put herself in it's path.

"Will someone PLEASE tell me what evidence implicates me for the treason I am investigating. I have no desire to make enemies of allies. I don't believe Matamoros is here to execute me."

She turned to him and gave him a questioning look. "Right?"

Underneath the concealment of his helm, his eyes narrowed at Gwenivere. She seemed serious enough and he felt it was better to avoid testing her 'will.' There was nothing to be gained by it.

"I know you all may not believe me, but she speaks the truth. I did not, in fact, come here to kill her. I assure you, if that was the case I would not have come in and engaged her in such a manner," he said, pointing towards the combat knife. "There are various...factors...that prevent me from fully engaging Rosalyn and outright executing her." Again, he looked towards Rosalyn, glancing briefly at the cross that hung around her neck. Of course, no one else could see precisely what he was looking at, but he had a feeling Rosalyn would know.

"Now then," he continued, "I'm sure Ms. Feynman will explain to you the implications that have been made." His gaze shifted to Gwenivere. "I am not here to kill any of you, so unless you plan on killing me now, you can put the bow down."

Gwen warily let the point of the arrow fall as she eased the tension off the bowstring. She still held it at the ready.

Her gaze turned to Clarisa again. "Yes, I know of the reports of a traitor in our midst. But Roselyn? Even though I've only been working with her for a few days, I think I can attest to her... integrity. Please... let's see what we have so far... ALL of us." She made a point of emphasizing the word so that Matamoros would also be prompted to cough up what he knew.

There was a puzzle here. Time to share all the pieces.

"City of Heroes. April 27, 2004 - August 31, 2012. Obliterated not with a weapon of mass destruction, not by an all-powerful supervillain... but by a cold-hearted and cowardly corporate suck-up."

Clarisa tried to close the splintered door but it kept swinging open. This wasn't the most secure area to discuss a sensitive subject. To maintain some security, she called up the "evidence" on her palmtop which she produced from her suit jacket pocket.

"Here." She handed the palmtop to Rosalyn. Rosalyn's confidence ebbed. Her face showed worry as she took the instrument and scrolled through the data report.

"How? Why?" was all Rosalyn could utter. For some reason her powers of deduction had left her and in its place was feeling of hopelessness. People had SEEN her at the scene of the crime. "I wasn't there, I was at the cafe." She turned to Lady Gwen and said, "You saw me exiting the building just before then, remember?"

Then she turned to Matamoros and said, "I couldn't...wouldn't do this, not with all of you participating in the investigation. I've never attempted to push Legion out of the loop, have I?"

Her eyes beckoned for someone to make sense of this.

Seeing Gwenivere lower her bow, he finally got back on his feet.

"This evidence points to you and you alone. I came to see how and why you did what you did. There is no motive for you to do this...that I know of anyway."

Matamoros looked around the room, everyone apparently looking at him to 'share what he knew.' He knew only what Physiks knew, other than Rosalyn's 'heretical' origins. "If you're looking at me for more information, you won't get any. I know only what Physiks knows. I came here to investigate further, but I was...interrupted." His eyes narrowed under his helmet as he looked at Gwenivere.

"The burden of proof is on Rosalyn. We already have a great deal of evidence pointing to her as the traitor." His head turned towards Rosalyn. "What do you propose we do? You can't expect to simply be...set free..."

Gwen spoke up.

"Actually, we could... but if we did that, the real traitor would know something was wrong and bolt."

She nodded at Roselyn. "I can attest that you were in that cafe when this video was made. I was there too, remember? We had JUST exited Legion HQ, and stopped for lunch on the way back. In fact... I believe I saw a security camera behind the counter of the deli. Perhaps we should send someone there to appropriate the tape."

She paused, then, putting her bow away, steepled her fingers. "However, NOW we have to flush out someone who's able to impersonate Roselyn, perhaps others, to the degree that even our biometric security is fooled. So... rather than try and lock the labs down even further, alerting them to the fact that we KNOW... we should instead act as if Roselyn has been arrested... and thus allow the real perp to become complacent."

"But.. we need bait. A honeypot of some kind. A target for them to raid. Something so juicy that they won't be able to resist...."

A smile spread across Gwen's face. "Excuse me a second."

She pulled a phone from her pocket and dialed. "Shay. Hi, its Gwen..... Yeah I know.... I'm at Roselyn's place now.... Uh huh.... No she didn't, I can prove it too... but we have nothing on the real perp yet.... OK... I hope you're sitting down. Because after all you've had to deal with, this is gonna sound REALLY nuts..."

"Your plan makes sense, except there's one problem. It is obvious that our opponent has made exclusive use of covert operations. With Rosalyn 'arrested,' the main arm of our opponent will be cut off. They won't send in their double knowing the real one is arrested. Everything would look too obvious. I don't know...

Matamoros crossed his arms and shook his head. "I don't particularly like this plan. It's too dangerous. It relies on our opponent making a careless move and come out into the open. If that fails, it will only leave our facilities open to Crey or anyone else." He sighed deeply "But...we don't have any other option open to us..."

Posted

"You're right. However.... if we allow Roselyn to roam around, what is stopping the unknown from framing her again?"

"Unless... WE know where Roselyn is at all times. A tracer. If Roselyn appears without the tracer... then we have the imposter. Nothing obvious though... otherwise the signal could be scanned and then spoofed."

Gwen thought. This was Kashaye's bailiwick. How would SHE propose to do this?

Aha.

The energy monitors.

They were put in place to detect energy emissions that might have somehow escaped from the lab isolation shields... but they also kept tabs on energy signatures inside and outside the building. This is how Mallory was initially discovered.

And each person had a unique energy signature. It could be... simulated... but minor inconsistencies would be ebough to expose the spoof.

"Sykes? yeah, it's Gwen.... Hey, sorry to bug you at home. But I have a question. ..... We have the energy signatures of every employee on file, right?... They're cross-loaded into the lab alert protocols, so the alarms don't go off if someone uses an ability in the lunchroom.... Uh.... how dicey would it be to access those sensors in real-time, and do a continual cross-reference to the biometric scans? .... yeah I KNOW it'll take a supercomputer, we have three in the lab. I'm sure we can task one of them to do this.... No I don't want you calling your team in on this, can you do it on your own? .... Uh huh... That's right. It's a net. .... We're gonna turn the whole building and the outside grounds into one big lobster trap... and a trap isn't any good if the lobster knows what it is, right?... yeah..... exactly.... OK, I'll handle getting you the computing resources... you handle the egghead stiuff, OK?.... and call me as soon as you're ready for a test run or two ... no, Clarisa and I will test it... no one else.... "

Gwen hung up, and immediately placed another call.

"Shay. Sorry. yeah had to do some consulting. Listen.. we're going to need two things... one, Sykes will need to use your third supercomputer for some real-time security work. No I can't say what it is exactly, but if this works, you'll be proud.... yeah I know. OK, the other shoe is... your lab data. No not all of it... just enough to be a nice shiny sparkly prize for a thief. Go ahead and tweak it a little, put in some errant data someplace... nothing that would be significant, but we'll use as a tracer... uh huh... and then park your real data on a secure firewire drive, OFFLINE.... Yep, can't let anyone know there's two copies..... I know Shay... I'm tired too... but we got a thief to catch, and right now this is the only way I can think of.... yeah... and again, I apologize.... I'll be home later, I hope."

Gwen disconnected the call and turned to the other two in the room.

"OK. WE know what's being set up as the bait... and what the trap is built out of. The trap builder doesn't know about the bait... and the one creating the bait doesn't know about how the trap is implemented. Did I miss anything?"

"City of Heroes. April 27, 2004 - August 31, 2012. Obliterated not with a weapon of mass destruction, not by an all-powerful supervillain... but by a cold-hearted and cowardly corporate suck-up."

Matamoros listened...but he really didn't understand much of what Gwen was talking about. Not that he was stupid, it's just that these overly elaborate methods of capture didn't appeal to him much. He preferred to track down someone the old fashioned way then finish them off. Then again, that wouldn't exactly work in this situation, considering there weren't any leads.

"Well, it appears you have everything covered. Only we know the true extent of the plan and each participant in this trap is completely in the dark about the overall operation. Sounds like it's as safe as it's going to get."

Matamoros leaned down and picked up Torquemada, putting his arm through the strap.

"Are we to inform Mr. Victor Jaramillo?" He threw that question out to throw them off balance.

Not that anyone KNEW the particulars anyway. She fully intended to change the parameters slightly as soon as she got a moment alone. It was just like dropping dye down a storm drain to find the outlet... it wasn't so much that a story got out... but which story was the one to escape.
