/bind canned-humor, when is enough, enough?

I'm silly. That's how I am. I can't take many things seriously when I'm online. Even when testosterone discussions escalate in groups I'm in, i just get out the ;newspaper and go get a drink until the kids train something, disband/kill each other.

Anyway... I'm that clown that is always saying something completely out of context, in the wrong situations, sometimes when people are discussing strategy (not that I'm not listening) or in the middle of fights.

So basically, the situation is this:
I /bind canned humor. What canned humor? Well, lately the canned humor are catch phrases from the 80's and early 90's.
I have one bind cycling 70+ phrases. Some are as is, some I've adapted.
I guess the most blatant one would be: "OMG, they killed Synapse! You bastages!"
But you can imagine. Steal every famous superhero phrase "My spidey sense is tingling"(even though i have absolutely nothing to do with spiders) to "Freeze! This is Miami Vice!" or "You're the weakest link... GOODBYE!"
There are alot, these are by no means the funniest, but from a list of 70+, i can't recall that many at work

I don't really have a system, i might be saying (local) some attack phrase like that on every other group of mobs we attack, i might only say them on bosses, but 95% of the time i'm getting "lol"s on every sentence.
The other 5% are usually on those groups where no one says ANYTHING for 2 hours. You just grind, grind, grind. Or on groups where someone will start venting because you dropped <insert AoE power here> on that group of mobs when everyone was looking at their shoe laces...
The silent ones bother me. They do.
So what I ask is this... Is canned humor bad? Should I stop my silly emotes if I get no response? Am I being annoying? Is there a net-etiquette rule of thumb for stuff like this? Maybe I shouldn't care at all and be goofy all I want? On the other hand, when my chat window only has 5 sentences, they're all local and they're my emotes... I worry.

(Ok, fine, i have some original sentences there somewhere, but the ones from TV shows in the 80's are much funnier :P
Cut that jibba jabba!)
((God, i'm old.))

Grey area.

Overdone it is freaking annoying.
Used in moderation it is entertaining.
Used sparingly it can be a good way to make a situation very fun/funny.

Unfortunately those terms (overdone, moderation, sparingly) are all subjective. In addition, there will always be someone that doesn't appreciate your humor (or isn't old enough to even know the 70s/80s existed.

If I were on a group with you, that chatter would be most welcome. In fact, I'd join in. I have a few bound sayings myself (not that I use them often), including one used on bosses calling them out. I've been in too many dead silent groups. Unless you're told to shut up or stop, keep going. Maybe lay off a bit, don't do it as much, etc. Unless you start to annoy yourself (I've done that!).

Rather than use the F6 (RUN!) key, I'll take a minute to type out (after biting the pavement). "That didn't go so good. Everyone out of the pool!" "Run for your lives!" or something similar.

70+? How do you have room for all the binds?

Sayig things is good - even canned things. Silent groups are eerie and scary. I tend to quit them.

I just need one key. Numpad0 for me = silly attack phrase = "Is that a gun in your pocket or are you happy to see me?"

I have one folder on my hdd with 70+.txt files.
1.txt would be...
numpad0 "local Go for the eyes, Boo! Go for the eyes!$$ taunt1$$ bind_load_file c:\binds\2.txt"

2.txt would be...
numpad0 "local I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick [censored], and im all out of bubblegum!$$ taunt1$$ bind_load_file c:\binds\3.txt"

Each leads to the next and the last leads to 1.txt.
It's that simple. One key. One million random sayings.

(pardon the bad syntax in the commands. Sneaking a post at work ) And you only need to type bind_load_file c:\binds\1.txt once. Even if you log out, it will stay in memory. The correct bind file loaded and all.

My bind files actually have more junk in them, like newspaper headlines, but you get the idea for just the phrases.

Cheers.

I'm one of those people who exported the default binds, edited them with notepad, and then reloaded the file.

Now my character will NOT accidentally auto-run or follow a bad guy if I start typing without hitting Enter first. Instead she just says a whole bunch of non-sequiteurs.

Nevermind I modeled most of Soul Train's 'taunt' binds to something Mo'Nique would say to a heckler. So they're really amusing out of context.

Especially under Atlas.

Soul: "Yo yo, don' be dissin' ME, RandomHero, Soullll Trainnn gonna whup yo' butt!"
Randomhero: What you say????
Soul: /em puts hands over mouth and blushes RED
Soul: Oh sorry, wrong /bind!!!

I don't suppose anyone has an easy to follow step by step process for setting something like this up? I'm having a really hard time deciphering this to make it work.

In game type /bind_save then log out.

Find the keybind file (usually keybinds.txt) and copy it a buncha times renaming each one differently (Keybind1.txt, keybind2.txt, etc . . .) then when you go into the file (with notepad or wordpad) you just change that one line (numpad0 in the OP's case) to play the saying and load the next file.

To load the file from in game from the chat prompt you type /bind_load_file [path to file]. i.e. if I have the file on my C drive and in the folder 'Stuff' it would be /bind_load_file c:\stuff\keybind3.txt Alternately you can load the default keybinds file (to copy the same keybinds over to more than one character) by typing /bind_load.

If you are using the command from within a macro/bind leave off the slash as shown in the OP's example.

When you open the keybinds file with notepad a lot of it will become clear. It'll list the key and then stuff next to it that that particular key does.

You might want to check Winza's guide for binds:
http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showf...part=1#2435314

Other than that, lemme try to make an easy tutorial for you.
For the tutorial purpose, i'm going to bind all sentences to the numeric pad 0 key. It's one of the keys that has a "special" name as binds go, numpad0 (check Winza's guide for the others)

Start by making a directory to store your bind files and memorize the path to it. c:\binds\ for instance

Now make a new text file. Mine are numeric (1.txt, 2.txt...) but they can be anything you want.
Edit that file, with notepad or whatever.
Let's make your character say something on the local channel by just pressing the numpad0.
Your first text file will need to be (ignore <>'s when you actually type this):

numpad0 "local <your sentence here>$$ bind_load_file <second file in your directory>.txt"

Save.
That's it. Decomposing it:
numpad0 - sets the bind key to the 0 key of the numeric pad. Pretty self explanatory
"local <your sentence here> - Makes your character actually say something in the local channel in-game. local Hi! would make you say "Hi!". This is as simple as it gets.
$$ - (don't forget a space after these.) These tell the game that another command is coming.
bind_load_file <second file in your directory>.txt - Loads the next file in your directory. If you go with numeric files like i did, it would be: bind_load_file 2.txt thus loading sentence number two.

Make your second file. Edit:

numpad0 "local <your second sentence here>$$ bind_load_file <third file in your directory>.txt"

Save. It's the same as the first, you obviously just change the sentence and the next file to link to.

Repeat these steps until you have all your sentences ready in their own little files.

On the last file though... Make, edit:

numpad0 "local <your last sentence here>$$ bind_load_file <FIRST file in your directory>.txt"

Save. That way it's cycling. Wouldn't want you stuck on the same sentence forever now would we?

When that is done, start CoH and whatever character you want to use those sentences type:
/bind_load_file <the path to your first file>
/bind_load_file c:\binds\1.txt (for instance)
You only need to load it once. It will stay in memory for that character.

This is the first tutorial i ever made, so it might be confusing. But post whatever questions you have and i'll try to answer them. Cheers!

you don't need to copy the entire keybind file over and over and over.

Just export the lines you want changed to a new file, and copy THAT one many times and change each.

when a bind file is loaded with /bind_load_name, it will overwrite those binds that are in it, and leave all the others 'stock'. Makes for a much faster load, plus takes up less space on the HD.

Good to know! I didn't know it defaulted in that manner

OK. I have found that binds that say things get annoying when spoken in Local... ESPECIALLY when you're running an android.

I'd set my TAB functions to announce the new target... and after I'd dispatched a crew of thugs (cycling thru them with the targeting keys) I get a tell: "Dude, shut it already!"

Whups.

So I reset them all except CTRL-TAB (target nearest enemy) which now says "Targeting Priority Override: $target" (basically to indicate to a team that I had to switch from range to melee defense mode to get rid of an annoyance.)
TIP: If you modify your targeting keys, put the "say text" AFTER the stock command to target something, that way it'll announce the current target rather than the old one (yes, this all happens at the same time, but they're processed in the order they show up in the bind command.)

And yes, the stock F6-F10 keys got redone. I really SHOULD move them around though. It doesn't make sense to have the "ready!" message IN BETWEEN the "Run!" and "Help!" keys, or the "LFT" key right beyond them. I'll probably put LFT on F12, at the end, with F11 being the 'Introduce'. Then sort the rest in order of increasing personal danger....

F10 - the Taunt key - this is easily changed to specify your target, and optionally issue your battlecry (by default it just does the battlecry).

F10 "say Hostile: $target - Directive: Subdue and Arrest$$em point"
F10 "say Hey $target!! $battlecry$$em taunt" << leave punctuation off after the battlecry variable, cos it's usu. defined in your ID anyway

You could also rework F10 into a pull command by using powexec_name [sniperpower] instead of em taunt or whatnot... That way you'd not only name your target for your team, but snipe him at the same time.

I also keyed an 'out of endurance' key (accent grave - it's the key to the left of the 1 on the number row, unused by default), an 'assist' key (shift-T) and a victory key for when a target drops (period key, also unused).

ex: Endurance
` "say Unit $name on battery power only - Request recharge downtime"

ex: Assist
SHIFT+T "say ASSIST MODE - Targeting functions transferred to $target"

ex: Victory
. "say Target $target has been rendered unconscious, awaiting police transport."

and lastly, the "I just Died!" key

SHIFT+Z "say ALERT! Unit $name has sustained critical damage, all systems offline!"
SHIFT+Z "say Man down! $name needs immediate medical evac!!"
