Guild to getting yourself a forum avatar

I'm just not getting this (and I've been trying for 4 1/2 years). What are the [image][/image] tags for, and when are they supposed to be used? Which string of code from ImageShack is actually acceptible to this forum's UI? None that I've tried have worked, and I've tried most of them with and without the header/footer codes mentioned in the FAQ.
Why-oh-why don't they just offer a browse and upload option? I have over 50 toons, and a fabulous screenshot selection with no easy way to add a tiny avatar to my forum ID... *cries*
