Before I do anything mind-numbingly stupid...

I have a few questions to ask. But first the formalities:

Hi all. I'm a new CoH purchaser. I've been interested since I heard about it and have finally gotten the funds together to by the game. Now, I must admit I lurked around the forums as a guest and I was really interested in the RP section.

I've been into RPGs for a while now, first with tabletop pencil and paper stuff and that branched out onto message board RPing. However, I've never Rped on a MMORPG before. In fact, City of Heroes is my first MMORPG. So, before I do anything dumb in game I just wanted to check if there's any particular courtesy or ettiquette to observe that I may not have picked up on from my other Roleplaying experiences. Any help will be gladly recieved.

Thanks!

Sure here's a few tips -

out of character commentary is generally proceeded by
ooc : ooc, stands for out-of-character of course

or double parenthesis :
((like this would be out of character chat here))

thought bubbles are thought bubbles, just cuz YOU can read them doesnt mean your character can, although if your a mentalist character, hey I might let that slide in the name of good RP :-D

actions tend to be asteriked like this -> *coughs*

them's the basics...
welcome to the fold.

Thanks for the reply. And, before I forget, thanks to ODeere for the PM too.

The OOC thing I'm familiar with from message board RPing, but it's good to have the convention confirmed. As to the rest, thanks a lot. The thought bubble point is just remembering to stay in character, so that's cool. Actions I had no idea about.

not really hard and fast rules but seems to be the accepted convention as far as I can tell, and it's pretty intuitive.

other than that, remember /ignore will mute anyone that ridicules your for roleplaying or tries to harass you for having fun or talking in-character in local...it's really just easier that way than actually trying to talk to the critics, then tend to go away once they realize your ignoring them.

oh, and while it hasnt caught on I HIGHLY recommend putting <roleplayer> as the first line of your bio...once it catches on, people will be able to identify each other a little easier (as most RPers Ive found tend to be obsessive Bio-Readers...)

Which, of course, brings up the next obvious thing. Make a good Bio. If you leave it blank or type stuff like your computers processor speed... you won't get as much action as if you put your characters origin or brief bio in there.
But thats my opinion.

Keep an open mind. When I'm not developing my main character I tend to enjoy playing and doing some rp with my main ALT....

This alt, whos name I wil mention in a moment, has been /ignore d by people before he even opens his mouth... this includes people I know on my main characters, people I roleplay with. (though I RARELY rp publically in game as my two most often played characters are lone wolves.)

n1nj4s3rf3rd3wd is a REAL character!

He has a history, an elaborate story, wants, desires, dreams, motives and a fairly well developed "style".

I suppose... don't judge a book by its... title.

If you would like to add me to your Virtue character f-list, you'll want to look for Ivory, Galactic Jack and... n1nj4s3rf3rd3wd... that's pronounced Ninja Surfer Dude... I am a terrible person.

Well, made my first rookie mistake today. At least I managed to get interaction started before blowing it all. Sorry, Wild Rose, and a solemn promise to all that I shall get better!

((Ack, gideon. That wasn't your fault, Sly Fox wanted me to join a team. He's one of Rose's commanding officers, so... yunno. Blame him. Plus I"d had like 3 hours of sleep, so my brain was pretty fried. Still is!

If you want some roleplay experience I'd really recommend FSS. I've been living in Candy Land since i joined them.

And Sailor! Shame on you! ... Although, that app was pretty damn funny. I almost snorted.))

Ah, if I knew where the application forms were kept I'd join FSS as soon as I was allowed. Though, living a quarter ofthe globe away from the bulk of the game's players I'd imagine it hard to find RPers anyway. So far I've found 2... that I know of, anyway.

((Ta-da! First Strike Security .
Look at peoples' bios. Most RPers have <roleplayer> in there somewhere. Again, feel free to add me to friends. I know how nerve-wracking it is trying to integrate yourself into an RP community. ))
