*gasp* I converted someone!
oh I think you're wrong... you can teach someone to roleplay, in fact you should... it will cut down on the people who have no freaking clue how to rp... and the butchering they do to open topics... learn things like... ogjectivity and... courtesy... @!%&

You can tell someone the courtesies and the ins and outs of RPing, but you can't teach them how to do it.

I hate to sound all carebearish but, you are both right... you can't really teach someone to roleplay but you can explain that they need to figure out WHO their character is and WHY he is a Hero and WHAT his/her motivations are...etc They need to figure that out, then like an actor they need to flesh out the character and start to play in character. A good back story is a great place to start:
<Paragon AfterDark Blog>: Knight Wolf
When I was a kid I read a story about a DarkKnight that, as a child, while leaving a theater after watching "The Mask of Zorro", witnessed the murder of his family. Lucky *******, they still haven't found my families bodies (the 5th Colomn is far to thorough for that).<End Blog Entry>
Back stories help you shape your characters personality, from that point on you will know why your character is doing what they are doing.
Congrats Mykroft! It's always nice to find someone who is interested in trying something new, especially when it's roleplaying!
I play Infernus Hades (Burn in hell in latin). Infernus greets new teams with the words "Whom do we burn human?"
I try not to be over the top during actual fighting. Keep it simple and occasionally throw in a different slant on a subject. In one case I pulled 3 hydras in Perez Park and suddenly the entire herd rushed us! Someone must have lured them on us and so I was killed but no others were. After I awoke to hear them all saying, "Holy cow how did all of those Protiens get pulled on us!" I replied, "What does it matter no Humans died?" They all said very true lets go get more!
I don't consider debt with this character, he is a fire demon granted life out of hell by the sword of Ironwolf. So being an intelligent demon he realizes that killing innocents gets you an endless stream of heroes trying to send you back to hell, or kill bad guys and have heroes welcome you.
Some choice huh?
Ok, silly pointless true story...but hey.
Was fiddling around on a lil baby alt blaster and I was staying mostly in character even though most of the team I was on didn't RP at all (which can be pretty funny at times actually), but they didn't seem to mind. Except for this one guy who started to comment about it. Asking what I was talking about, what does that mean, etc, etc. After a few minutes I realized that he really didn't know that I was RPing, so I calmly explained what I was doing. I think the term I used most was "I'm just being the hero..not myself."
Anyway, after a few minutes the kid (not assuming his age...he said his age at some point) decides that it looks fun and asks me to "teach" him how to RP. Which lead to the whole "Can't really teach someone to RP" thing....but I digress. He kept asking me to group with him later so he could practice, I was flabbergasted...but happy.
Just goes to show, sometimes it is worth it.
