6 sized +2 with just me x3 and a tank ended up being far more manageable and far less tedious. Yes, we teamwiped when we walked straight into an ambush, but otherwise, we mulched enemies consistently, while still having a few edge of the seat moments where things could have gone either way. [If we ever get a bubbler, things can get so easy.]

Learned a good bit the last few nights.
While me3 + brute can take out an 8 sized +2 mission, it may be a bit tedious and any lack of paying attention will result in death. This is chiefly attributable to the 2 or more bosses in every pack (and to the fact that I've been teaming up with lvl 14-24 meleers who are not likely well enhanced yet (i.e. SOs, IOs)).
I'll drop to 6 sized +2 tonight and see how that goes (removing the boss danger). If we got a SHIELD style buffer (especially yummy force fields), I'd take it back up a notch, but for now I want to up the pace and reduce the sensitivity to perfection required to avoid team wipes. Once I get higher and can find more 30 something Tanks to team with, this shouldn't be an issue. -
Hello all! Brutes/Tankers/Scrappers are all welcome, any level pretty much. Also, anyone of any level with either Accelerate Metabolism or Speed Boost is also welcome.
I play nightly from 9pm-ish to midnight-ish, eastern time zone. You're more likely to find me at 10pm consistently than earlier, however, as I have kids to put to sleep, and their resistance to going to bed is high.
Last night, I had a test run... first I had two tanks, a 14 and a 20, but things were too sloppy.... I attribute this mostly to a lack of a lead tank (I'll take the blame for not being clearer). Effectively, I'd debuff the hell out of a boss, but the two tanks ended up in two spots on the map, resulting in enemies that were out of the debuff zone. Later, one of the two tanks left and the remaining tank and I cleaned house easy-peasy, with a lot more structure & agreed upon strategy. I'll try to keep things clearer in the future and will definitely designate a lead tank at all times so that there's no confusion/spreading out which defeats the point of AoE debuffs & kill zones. -
*also, ANYONE with Accelerate Metabolism or Speed Boost (and who USES IT!) of ANY level is always welcome to join my team -- ANY LEVEL!!!!* I love the SPEEDY crack!

Hello all -- especially lowbie meleers looking for a FAST PACED high XP experience. *Playing city of HEROES side, though I am Fire/Rad Corrs*
Do you play CoH, heroside? Would you like TRIPLE (near) PERMA ACCELERATE METABOLISM? That's boosted speed, damage, and nearly unlimited ENDURANCE? Do you like taking on a dozen+ enemies at once and surviving (given that I can heal x3 as needed)? Are you a tanker/brute/or hearty scrapper not afraid to run in FIRST while I set up debuffs? Would you like to be on a team that is NEVER smaller than 4 people (since I am 3 and your are 1)? Do you like to see enemies melted rapidly, AoE style, before your very eyes? Do you want to play without any long term commitment (you can join me for 1 mission or many hours, your call)?
If so, then you are welcome to join my "Corruptors of Virtue" team on a nightly basis. You'll be playing with my 3x Fire/Rad Corruptor crew (yes, I triple box -- fully 3 keyboards, 3 mice, 3 screens, etc). I am the progenitor of the FIREBALL UNIVERSITY (F.U. for short, if you recall) having made a 3x Fire/Rad Corruptor setup before it was cool, way back in the CoV days. Now, I'm enjoying the same but on the CoH side.
I'd like to extend an invitation to ANY and ALL tankers from as low as level 22 (*edited*) all the way to my current level (37+ and climbing) -- I will include you on my team and recall teleport your butt around zones as needed (though you WILL need to get your butt to whatever zone I'm in at first). You just need to be a hearty eager player and you will get my invite!
I guarantee a better time than you'd get in the lowbie zones, and a MUCH faster pace. On my team, everyone plays or I hit the kick button. There's no moochin', there's NO doorsitting. AFK and/or unresponsive players get the boot.
I have a preference for 8-man sized enemy groups, +2 or +3. I lay down triple RI and EF and lay waste to most enemies with 3x Rain of Fire and 3x Fireball. Little survives my own alpha.
If the above interests you, then

That is my present LEAD Fire/Rad Corruptor. I look forward to hearing from you! -

I don't know why I ask these questions. In the end, I never can keep myself from buying new toys. Thanks Vorac. for helping me spend yet another $500....
Follow up question:
If I take an old 8800 GT and make it a 2nd video card in the PC getting the GTX 480, will it do much for performance if I dedicate that card to physics or will it actually be worse than letting the 480 do all the work? -
Quote:Thanks for providing the info that keeps me from wondering if I'm doing something wrong. This page pretty much explains what's going on: http://grokdoc.net/index.php/Dirty_Tricks_history
Microsoft has repeatedly tried to kill off the industry standard Graphics API, OpenGL, through-out successive versions of Microsoft Windows. Applications leveraging the OpenGL API under Microsoft's NT6 derived engines run into forced limitations designed explicitly to make OpenGL look bad, while making DirectX look good.

I'd like to be able to run OTHER programs in an 'always on top' mode, but for whatever reason I can only get it to work in Windows XP and not in either Vista nor Windows 7.
I'm talking about having either a VLC video window or a MediaPlayerClassic-HomeCinema window as perma on-top so that I can watch a movie in the corner of my screen whilst I play (with the game in FULL SCREEN mode). I have the CPU and GPU power for it, it just doesn't work.
Ideas? Thoughts? -
Quote:When I toyed with this, I found the best way to use the XBOX 360 (wireless) controller was to use a program like Pinnace Game Profiler to map the joystick to certain KEYBOARD commands. The right joystick you can set to act as a mouse. As someone else mentioned, doing this you can map a button or two as ALT, SHIFT, or CONTROL to get more uses out of your buttons. (Pinnace Game Profiler is not free, but there are other programs that do the same thing and that ARE free, such as Xpadder (?sp)).Yea, that 2nd 360 joystick never worked in game IIRC. Don't think I've ever read about a workaround.
Oh and welcome back. And if you forgot, ParagonWiki is your friend.
Done this way, I don't have to care about CoH's own implementation of the Joystick.
This worked best for my BLASTERS who didn't need to get in close (repeatedly) with any sort of precision. For melee guys, it's a little too sloppy, imo. -
I'm currently running a GTX280 at 1920x1080 for this game (on a QuadCore Q9450 processor at 3.2GHz).
What kind of bump in performance, if any, will I see if I run a GTX480 instead? Can anyone who runs one of those beasties relay their experience with it?
Thanks in advance. -
Thanks for the warm welcome back TJ.
I'd imagine I'm not the ONLY one with a 30" monitor running 2560x1600 who set the O.S. level display scaling to 150% who plays this game, though I do concede there are probably very few of us. While I know versions of Windows prior to 7 had similar features, to my recollection, they never worked or integrated as well with the O.S. As I noted in my op, I've certainly experienced the issue you yourself mentioned (with dialog boxes, usually in configuration/setup routines for games, getting misscaled to the point of not being usable), but I've not had any other GAME have this issue.
What I still don't get is that at 125%, the game plays fine (and looks the exact same as when I set it to 100%). It just doesn't work at 150%. Maybe there's some maximum cap in there somewhere that is causing CoH to crap out. [If I'm not too lazy, maybe I'll try setting the 150% O.S. scaling on my 1920x1080 native screen (on another PC) and see what happens.]
For those joining this conversation late, the SCALING % I'm referring to is not the same as the UI scaling in the game. I'm referring to a Windows 7 scaling feature. -
Quote:Well, the solution was neither (1) in the game (though the game may be the problem) nor (2) on the physical DISPLAY settings, nor (3) an Nvidia driver setting. It was a Winows 7 setting that SHOULD work as I had it.Well, the solution is in the exact same location as the resolution settings.
I don't use the increased size, but then I don't have such high a resolution, possibly not as proportionally small a monitor either.
Good to know what the solution is, but again it was not the game that was the issue. It was your display settings.
Thanks anyway. -

I just started up some Rogue accounts (x3); I am presently playing 3 Fire/Rad corruptors (yeah, I know I've done that already).
If you're interested in teaming, check me out of VIRTUE -- typically 9pm-midnight+ EASTERN. (I've had a few kids since this game came out, limiting my earlier play times).

PROBLEM LOCATED (no solution other than changing an O/S setting)
Windows 7 offers a nice feature under...
Control Panel > Appearance and Personalization > Display
I had this setting on "Larger 150%". Reducing it back to "Smaller 100%" returns my scaling for CoH to normal.
RETESTED -- It appears that ONLY the "Larger 150%" setting creates the problem. "MEDIUM 125%" does not result in the same issue. (and on both 125% and 100%, the in game resolution reported is 2560x1600 with 3D scaling also showing 2560x1600) So, for whatever reason, the largest setting throws something off with CoH resulting in the screen res getting whacked. Now, this is a WINDOWS 7 setting, not an Nvidia setting. This setting was DESIGNED for these ultra high res displays to keep users from having to use tiny text (again, this doesn't typically affect GAMES at all, and the 125% setting still does not affect CoH, so I'm not sure why 150% does).
This setting allows you to set scaling on the display which usually only affects text and dialog boxes and the like... it has not affected any other game and it is ANNOYING that I have to lose the ability to use this setting. (On this monitor, I like to use this feature so that text isn't teensy tiny; most newer programs work just fine with it, including every STEAM based game I own).
I hope a future update fixes this. -
Quote:Please just DELETE your post. It is inaccurate in every regard.Your problem is because you don't recognize that your monitor is not set to 2560x1600.
Th reason you only see part of the game when you set it to 2560x1200 resolution is that your monitor is a lower resolution so it only displays what it can, starting from the upper left corner as that is where the screen is "anchored".
Check your desktop resolution then set your game to match.
They have to match or the game will be bigger than your screen or smaller than your screen if you set the game lower.
I can't believe people still have this issue?
I am a PC guru myself. My screen IS set to 2560x1600, and that remains evident when in Windowed mode (where it 'works' but the in game rendering is being scaled up). The game even reports a DESKTOP RES of 2560x1600, but for whatever reason, the 3D scaling slider maxes out at a much lower res. [In full screen mode, ONCE I DID THE REGISTRY EDIT, the monitor reports it is receiving a 2560x1600 signal and it is also set to that resolution.] I have also tried various iterations of Nvidia's scaling choices, all with no effect.
I have two possible problem sources left to try (neither of which is an issue in WinXP):
(1) I have Windows 7 (but not XP on the same PC) set to a non-100% zoom (for text, browsers, etc). This doesn't affect most rendered GAMES (practically anything I play via Steam), but has proven to make some older program's dialog boxes mis-scale. I really don't see how this could be the problem, though, as the scale is VERY off.
(2) I did wonder if my dual screen setup was an issue, but even after totally disabling the second screen and rebooting, the effect remained. I think I may simply DISCONNECT the 2nd screen and try again, as I noted that my main screen is reported by NVIDIA as screen 2 (even though it is the 'main' as set by Windows) and my secondary is given #1. (I'll first disconnect, then swap DVI jacks...).
If neither of the above fix it, I'll take a photo of the screen with the monitor reported input and display resolution visible, so that you can see I'm not crazy. -
On the SAME PC, booted into Windows XP (and running therefore a different and older video driver), the problem does not exist.
I'll have to try a different video driver to see if that fixes my issue. Windowed mode at the wrong resolution is unacceptable. -
Quote:I did try this.... didn't fix it.I had a similar problem once before, though I wasn't trying to run the game at quite so high a resolution it wasn't displaying properly when I selected the appropriate resolution in the options, cutting off a portion of the screen. As I recall, there were two selections for the resolution in question in the options: one with "(desktop)" after it and one without. I believe I had to select the one that specifically had "(desktop)" appended to it for it to work correctly.
Looking at it AGAIN, I do notice that even in WINDOWED mode, it gives me only the option to set the 2nd layer resolution to 1705x1024 (with no ability to increase it), but it is clearly using up my entire screen, though also quite clearly doing so at the lower res (nothing is as sharp as it should be). Changing Screen/UI res and the 3D Res Scaling both to 2560x1600 results in the same problem I noted in the OP. -
*** PROBLEM DETERMINED (resolved with work-around); see about 8 posts down ***
I just re-upped my accounts (plural). For the first time, I am playing via my Windows 7 OS setup (dual boot PC's).
On my machine that is connected to a Dell 3008 running an Nvidia 8800GTX at 2560x1600, I am getting a very odd scaling bug. I'm running driver version 258.96.
When I start the game, even the first LOGIN screen is being mis-scaled. That is, I end up seeing only the upper left 1/4 of the screen, magnified up to fill the whole physical screen. Trying to blindy move the mouse beyond the edge I can see doesn't work because I can see that the mouse is hitting the visible edge and stopping.
I toyed with a bunch of NVIDIA settings to be sure none of those were the problem (I was the guy that wrote the old NVIDIA how-to guide on here)... no luck. I especially checked both the monitor and the driver's scaling settings. No luck.
I deleted the entire registry key for COH and re-ran the updater anew. No luck.
I checked the registry keys versus another PC of mine and then DUPED a bunch of the details. I also forced the resolution to 2560x1600. While it then kept Windows at 2560x1600, the game still drew the screen such that I could only see the same corner of the login splash screen.
Now, the only thing I COULD get working was to force the game into WINDOWED mode. Doing that let me see the whole screen. Once in this mode, I tried making all the proper settings IN GAME, and then setting it back to FULL SCREEN. Upon exiting and re-entering, I ended up with the same problem as before -- a mis-scaled screen.
What is going on here? -
Under the newest driver (at this time, 190.62), please note that the section:
"Adjust Desktop Color Settings"
in the Nvidia control panel has changed.
I noticed that on 2 of my 3 gaming PCs, the above settings were bumped to "other applications control color". I had to reset them to "Use Nvidia settings". You'll also note one other important item. Digital Vibrance now seems to start at 50% as 'normal'. Previously, 0% seemed 'normal' with anything above 0% as actually on. Now you will likely find yourself going above 50% to see a difference. It would also appear that Gamma and Hue are new options for this tab. I did not adjust mine beyond the standard settings. -
ACTUALLY (regarding newer drivers, not win7 specifically):
DO BE AWARE OF ONE THING WHEN MOVING TO DRIVERS 185+
Annoyingly, the tab "ADJUST DESKTOP COLOR SETTINGS" are often lost. Alternatively, what happens is that under "2. Choose how color is set", the default becomes "Other applications control color settings", which effectively eliminates your prior brightness/contrast/ gamma AND digital vibrance settings.
Thus, if you notice your screen & game look less well defined and lacking in VIBRANCE, double check that the "Use Nvidia settings" box is flicked.
Please note that this is simialr but NOT THE SAME as the section labeled "Adjust video color settings" which is different. -
I have not tried Windows 7 as of yet. Regardless, I don't see why the guide would need updating. All of the settings should pretty much be the same. I've been running 2 of 4 PC's on Vista 64 (and the others are still on XP) and the only time the settings differ is when one video card is too weak to run things so high.
To the extent you notice any slowdown in framerate, the same tips (as originally posted) apply as far as what to try turning down first. I'm not sure how well NVIDIA drivers are optimized for Windows 7 (if at all), and that may have an affect. Perhaps a starting test would be to try to run Futuremark on both Vista or WinXP and Win7 and see how things differ. -
Sounds like the ION is worth waiting for.. at least to find out if it's any better. Any idea on ETA?

Anyone try CoX on a NETBOOK? If so, which one?
My wife is begging for a new laptop, and I've been pondering getting her a netbook instead. I'm curious if CoX would work on it. Someone on here must have tried it by now... anyone?
