so after reading several threads regarding noob questions and after making a complete fool of myself on the Player Questions board (suggesting suggesting a build that would make experienced players say zomglulzNUB!) i'm kind of caught in between what i should be doing for end game pvp (my ultimate goal) and what i want to do (make toons that i personally think work great for pvp in OTHER games; ice for immobilizers being my latest derp).
i would prefer a caster class, but i'm not ruling out anything at this point. i just need advice. so here goes....
1) what spec would you suggest for an experienced pvp'er but noob coh player and why? advantages/disadvantages, leveling speed, over-crowded toon population (like frost mages in wow. UGH!), etc...
2) i work midnight shift so my playing hours are going to be a bit wacky. i'm reading almost exclusively that freedom is hands down the best for pvp 24/7. so freedom, yeah?
3) would it be wise to level my toons on a different server first then pay to transfer or should i start them out on freedom? i'm not a big fan of higher levels ganking me in starter zones. lame-o.
4) what kind of environment can i expect from pvp? meaning are there a lot of duels, group action, ...what? is either side (villain or hero) decidedly better in terms of players? are there a lot of baddies going around screaming about how OP they are? stuff like that.
5) what levels can i start pvp'ing/start becoming relevant?
thanks for reading if you made it this far. hopefully you'll get a chance to /wrist me on the battle field sometime soon. -
Quote:what would you suggest? ...class and spec?I don't recommend Dual Blades/Fiery Aura for PvP at all. Hate to tell you, but you picked a combo that is towards the bottom of the effectiveness list for brutes. If you're really dead set on it you can go level it, but when you start PvPing with it you're likely to be disappointed with it's performance.

ok so there goes that idea.
i've got a lot to learn. :/ -
i've played around with a few classes and i'm set on leveling a brute DB/FA mainly because of the inherent HP and good dmg output.
my main focus will be pvp, so i have a few questions regarding grant invisibility and its usefulness in a pvp environment.
first off, the tooltip is a bit confusing. it states you can grant it to "a targeted teammate," doesn't mention if it is usable on the caster. is it possible to put grant invisibility on yourself?
secondly, if it is castable on yourself, how effective is it in pvp? in other games being kited is a huge problem for melee classes. this talent seems like it would be incredibly useful for any melee class looking to pvp. -
Quote:i'll keep an eye out for those posters. and i'm not too worried about getting my feelings hurt. if you ever check out EJ take a look at their simple questions/simple answers column. they are BRUTAL.Some of the key "mechanics" people on the forums are:
- Arcanaville She is very knowledgeable about how stuff works in this game. She is, however, rather cerebral and verbose. (Take that as you will.) She is the type of poster that will randomly creep in to a thread and give someone the lay of the land far more loqaciously and accurately than just about anyone would have really needed.
- Umbral He is quite knowledgeable as well, and is a regular poster in the already mentioned Scrapper sub-forum. He is, however, how should I put this kindly... rather direct.
- Nihilii / Werner I mention these two together because they are both avid AV-soloers and are also frequent posters in the Scrapper sub-forum.
thanks again everyone for all the great tips. - Arcanaville She is very knowledgeable about how stuff works in this game. She is, however, rather cerebral and verbose. (Take that as you will.) Quote:If you like playing healers you will probably enjoy playing the various support ATs (Controllers, Defenders and Corruptors).
Just remember 2 things:
1. Your buffs or debuffs are far better than your heals (assuming you even have any heals)
2. You have two powersets and for the most part are expected to use both of them (Defenders and Corruptors get ranged attacks alongside their support powers, Controllers get... controls).
As Agge said Empathy and Pain Domination are the most heal focused support sets (with Thermal Radiation coming in third) but even with them it's important to note that the heals are the weakest powers in the set, the higher level powers are about proactively preventing damage or increasing the teams damage rather than re-actively healing people.
There are 12 different support sets in the game, I recommend you try a few different ones and see what you like. All of them offer a unique combination of powers and play very differently. If you want a more active support set you'll probably prefer one of the debuff focused ones such as Traps, Radiation Emission or Dark Maisma where you need to focus on positioning debuffs on spawns. On the other hand if you're prefer a set that allows you more time for blasting then you might prefer a more buff focused set such as Force Field, Sonic Resonance or Empathy where you can do a lot of your buffing in between fights with only one or two heals or debuffs during a fight.
great stuff.
honestly if i'm not going to be a raid healer i'm probably going to concentrate on being OP.i picked corrupter (dark blast/dark maisma). it has everything i love about caster classes. high damage output, some healing, and immobilizers. sounds like a lot of fun. i love playing the 'bad guy' so even the names are awesome for what i'm looking for.

Quote:healing is one of the weaker forms of mitigation, our debuffs and buffs are generally much more powerful. This is something that tends to confuse lots of other MMO players when they first start playing... there are no "healers" per say and if your team's at all competent heals are largely unnecessary.
...which is sad for me considering i'm a healer by nature. but i'm also very into story architecture, and super heroes rightly shouldn't need 'healers' i suppose. i'll adapt.
thank you all so much. this is plenty to get me started. hope to see you in game (Trystien). -
Quote:regarding addons, since you've played WoW i'll use that as a basis. you say there are no addons exactly and that only texture modification is supported. does this mean that the UI is completely off limits to developers? using a popular wow addon for example... would a Grid type addon (a unit frame substitution) be strictly prohibited/against the ToS? cooldowns, frame modifications... is all of this off limits? There aren't any actual addons for City. Nothing will change the functionality of the base game. You can only tweak the visuals, and then only by changing texture files.
There are applications to assist information-gathering (HeroStats for data; Badge-Hunter (badge-hunter.com) and City Info Terminal (cit.cohtitan.com) for badge collecting stats, both of which can be verified by HeroStats, CIT also can be verified through a separate, low-resources program called Glycerine).
There's the Vidiotmaps Pack, which changes the base image of the map to include helpful information.
There's the various icon fixes, which changes the power icons to more standardized versions (using a pet icon for a pet, instead of a knockback icon, which is something the pet does...that kind of thing).
As for your other question, as a sometimes WoW player myself, I find this game is actually kind of freeing to not have to powergame in order to be the very best, because you can play the game without any enhancements (our version of gear) and still do OK. However, you'll find an EJ mentality down in each archetype's subforum. People tend to stick with the official forums for most of their poking at builds, that way they get the most exposure and the easiest channel of feedback. Even better, you can only post on the forums if you have an active account, so you'll always get responses from someone who is playing *right now* instead of possibly operating with old information. Mids (cohplanner.com) can help you plan your build.
Keep in mind that City is EXTREMELY casual friendly, so there's no actual 'wrong' way to do it. If you're having fun with it, you're doing it right.
i really appreciate your help. thanks. -
i'm a pretty experienced mmorpg player so i kind of knew what to expect from coh, but i have to admit there are some nice surprises. i really really REALLY like the creation process. i've never seen anything quite like it.
i do have a concern, however, regarding the absence of (at least i think) addons. WoW has been my main mmo for the last couple years and i've grown attached to the freedom that the devs allow 3rd party software enthusiasts. from what i can tell there is an extremely limited amount of addons for this game. is there a website dedicated strictly to coh addons, and if so where can i find it (outside of the wiki page that has several links to particular addons)?
also, i was a frequent reader of EJ (elitistjerks.com) which is a theory crafting website for WoW dedicated entirely to number crunching and game mechanics. is there a similar site for coh, and if not, would there be interest in the community for a site like this (a think-tank of sorts)? i only ask because i'm a real stat hound and really like juggling the possibilities between certain scenarios, and this game seems VASTLY superior to WoW in that regard considering the almost limiteless talent combinations.
i just really want to dig into the mechanics of this game. maybe there's something out there and i'm not finding it.
any help would be greatly appreciated.
