Is there a manual for this ****, because it's so confusing... it's like another language or something.

I will take your advice, however I still do blame Microsoft for not making their new operating systems not fully backwards compatible with the stuff they've released in the past. NO ONE ELSE DOES THIS. -
To everyone, yes, there are some problems, and they stem from 3 sources:
- Actual bugs with the boards - like the fact that the signature image option is there but doesn't actually work and you have to "hack" it by putting the picture in your normal signature text. Just as an example, but there ARE bugs that SHOULD be worked on.
- Change. This IS a different forum, and as such, some things WILL be different from the way that you're used to, which brings me to...
- People's fear of or resistance to change. Yes, MOST people have at least a resistance to change. But you do have to change your habits to a certain degree to meet the situation.

What browser and OS are you using, Canine?

Quote:Sam, you should REALLY consider getting into the habit of right clicking your text input field and choosing Select All and then Copy.... I've been doing it even BEFORE the new forums because the old forums ate my posts just as much. Now it's habit, I copy EVERYTHING before sending.
Funny thing, that. Since the new forums were introduced, I've seen them spaz out and load for hours, and on the very first day of their introduction, I lost more posts than I've lost since I switched to Firefox three years ago. On the old forums, you could back up, reload, even close the tab and Firefox would remember what you wrote. On this one, the script "knows" what to put in the text box at startup, usually a full-scale quote, so if you write something and reload, what you wrote is wiped out and replaced with what the initial value of the script was. The lazy man's guide to losing posts - buy a mouse with a back button on it. Oops!
Then, if I 'lose' it, I just have to paste it and hit Send again. Works every time, nothing lost. -
That is your perogative and your choice.
Quote:2) It doesn't really work either. If I remember I missed something and re-log it still takes me to posts I have read. -
Quote:The new search feature, however, IS a lot better than the old one! It's a lot easier to find old info than it used to be!
The implementation of these forums has gone badly badly wrong - technically, stylistically and in terms of content organisation. Finding relevant information is next to impossible. -
Quote:I'm more upset that I can't just scroll through all the subforums with the sweep of a mouse wheel and see if there's been any activity. I miss the old board.
Try out the New Posts button at the top of the forums Angry, that should show you everything new. And it seems to sort it by THREAD, not by post, so you won't see like 50 gajillion listings for the Hero Draft in there, just ONE for the latest post in that thread. -
Okay, okay, whoah slow down there people. Before we get all DOOMY around here, let's see what we can do to try to help fix the problem.
Yes, I ALSO had the problem with the "new post" link not working correctly, it was irritating as hell, so I found a solution that has worked for myself and for others, please try it out.
As for your avatar "disappearing"? That only happens when you do a quick reply to a thread, and it ONLY happens ON that quick reply when it pastes it on to the page. When you hit refresh, the avatar will be back. It's because the forums are actually posting your reply instantly into the same window without refreshing, that's why your avatar doesn't load right away.
So, I'm going to go back through this thread again, and see if I can find any more problems that I can de-DOOM-ify.
Man, I should get paid for this stuff, it's WORK! -
Very very strange. Well, if it's not worth your time, it's not worth your time. The next thing I was going to suggest is that you might try to change the default installation directory into something else.... like c::\foobar or something, it might not like that this "alien" version of Windows software is trying to install into a protected Vista directory or something.... I don't know, I gave up on Vista a while ago because if its stupid security and when back to XP. Never been happier, things just WORK here.
Anyways, try that out if you want to, but it is entirely your choice. -
Considering that it's a Windows application using Microsoft's Visual Basic runtime files.... yeah, good luck with that. I'm sure it's POSSIBLE to get it running under a version of Linux, but you'd have to do the dirty work on that yourself, sorry.
You might just have better luck using Golden Ace's Forum Color Guide, where i got the codes from originally and manually inputting them yourself. You should know however that where he has the code listed as being
[ color:#00FA9A] for example? That's the old that's on the old forums, with the new forums the code is actually [ color=#37A381]. Note the equals sign instead of the colon. -
You may be the only account, and you may have "admin access" to the file, but that doesn't make your account THE admin account. Vista has retarded security. On system wide changes like this, you need FULL admin access that can only be gotten by running it UNDER the actual admin account. And no a regular user account with admin rights isn't the same.
That message that you're getting is saying that you either "don't have access or the disk is full" and the disk obviously isn't full. Which means you don't have access. It's not because the directory doesn't exist either, because if you have FULL access, and a directory doesn't exist that you're trying to copy to, the admin account MAKES the directory for you. This is one of the reasons why I hate Vista, 64 or otherwise. The security is STUPID.
Here, this awesome looking guide should show you how to get this done, now AND in the future. Tell me how it goes, please. -
Quote:100% nadda, i look at the rep system as an ego system. A group of people trying to be something they aint.
True reputation is achieved by people knowing you can be trusted/good at something simply by looking at your name, not thinking "hmm they have 5 bars of good rep so they must be good!".
Besides its already proven that a lot of people are rating inside their own little cliches, so nah think i'll stick to the good old method of trusting everyones opinion on each and every post

Hey, that's the most articulate and CONSTRUCTIVE negative rep I've seen yet on these boards! -

Because reputation on these boards is now meaningless.
Especially positive rep. There's still a chance that negative rep might mean something however, for now... -

Quote:Unlikely. The rules-of-thumb for name purges are posted somewhere (several somewhere's actually), but what it basically comes down to is, if the character in question is level 6 or higher, their name will never be taken away from them, even if the player hasn't subscribed in 4+ years.
The general consensus for why this is the case is that NC doesn't want to upset returning players if they log back in after x-number of months or years and find they've lost their character's name(s).
IMO, that's a bunch of hooey. Anyone who has dropped the game for multiple years and returns expecting to still have their character names has a pretty big sense of entitlement if you ask me. I doubt if I went to work for another company for a few years and then returned to my current job, they'd have my office and parking space waiting for me when I returned.
I know this topic is a dead horse, and it's probably not easy to do, but if it was possible, I think characters on inactive accounts should be stripped of their names if they are under the level of the number of months the account has been inactive. For example, start with accounts that have been inactive 24 months or longer:
Inactive 24 months - all characters level 23 or lower are genericked
Inactive 27 months - all characters level 26 or lower are genericked
etc.
etc.
etc., until
Inactive 51 months or longer - all characters under level 50 are genericked.
In this way, if you have been an active, paid subscriber within the last 2 years, you'd only be at risk of losing a name in characters under level 6, and no one would ever lose a name on a level 50 character.
This would be in addition to the current, infrequently run name-freeing-up program, and if were up to me, both would be run every three months.
I think this is brilliant, and would like to subscribe to your newsletter. I also honestly do think that 50s should be considered "special" over 49 and below and preserved for all time.
If people REALLY want those names, let's just attach some "special" title at the end of inactive accounts' level 50s that they can't get any other way, or something that makes them similarly unique and protected, while still freeing up the names. -
I got the same head comment. I have a sneaking suspicion that both were Perfect_Pain, and I'm not usually wrong about these things...
Bah, she confirmed it just as I was hitting Enter....
