  1. Well, as it turns out, we now only have three battlers left! Being as such, there's one elimination this month and next month will be the final fight.

The theme this month was Icon Snafus. Full details can be found here.

As always, vote in a 1, 2, 3 format. Voting will close Friday, Sept. 3rd at midnight US Eastern time.

  2. *stumbles in* Sure, Foo wins! That was easy!

    I didn't get in until 3:30am. I'm tired...

Voting will be up later this evening.
  3. Dunno about the others, but I'm taking personal character requests
  4. If a non-participant can do me a BIG favor and make a post right at 12:00 to draw the line on the entries, I'd very much appreciate it. When I was making the deadline, I totally spaced on the fact that I won't be home tonight! Going to a concert we bought the tickets for a couple months ago, and didn't put two and two together about the date =P
  5. These guys have made an art of posting at the last minute
  6. I'm still doing up CR's suggestion for next week, but with classes starting this week and a lecture I need to attend tonight, I got swamped!
  7. If you guys don't stop dropping out, I'm gonna have to make next month the final month!
  8. Its going to be hard to suffer through drawing Christina Hendricks.... but I think I can tough it out.

On an unrelated note, oil painting supplies are expensive @.@
  9. I think comparing Muro to Photoshop at all is a teensy bit silly. I think we tend to forget that Photoshop is very powerful software and is NOT centered around its digital painting capabilities. Heck, Photoshop is a required class for me, and we went the entire semester without doing any digital painting.

I'm not ashamed to admit she's 90% of the reason I started watching Mad Men.

But it turns out its an awesome show anyway, so bonus!
  11. Indeed! Right now you wouldn't have much competition for getting picked, either ^.^
  12. Next sketch was Assisace's IG883 request!

I need some requests for next Wednesday!

We got 3-month premium memberships to ZAM!!! I phoned my dad and told him about this extremely high honor immediately.
  14. I really love Lounge Crooner ^.^

Also guys, don't forget that your suggestions can and will be used for my Wednesday sketches!

Is it just me or did I make Red Sonja kinda Jewish? hmmmm...

I view it as getting source material from a team of highly talented professionals to work with.

Fine art photography is often a collaboration in the same way. But people seem more likely to recognize a model as being a significant contributor to the work vs. Poser which is just viewed as software.
I definitely see where you're coming from. For me, its a shifting line. How much of the piece produced DEPENDED on the individual textures/pieces made by others? Or was a piece successful because of all the artistic choices made? Its much like using Photoshop to me... a poor piece will rely mostly on fancy-pantsy brushes, but a strong piece will be in the artists skill, with specialized brushes being more of a precise tool.

I see the same in the photography/model example. It depends on the shot. Did it rely heavily on the model emoting, or was it more about the light/exposure/lens choice/cropping etc., etc.

And Caemgen- if you're not liking Poser art, that's the fault of the artists, not the media. I also don't see much merit in a vast majority of it. But I know that's not because of Poser itself.
  16. Yeah, which is another good point. ANYONE can oil paint, too. That doesn't automatically mean its all done well.

Media is media; its the artist that makes it art. Its insane to deem something not to be art because of the media used, not the way the artist used it.
  17. Man, digital animators are gonna be pissed when someone finally tells them they're really playing with dolls.

Skills differ, but if you're GOOD at it, you're making artistic choices when using Poser. What about composition? Color? How you use your light sources? People who really get into it will also do a lot of postwork to heighten their pieces.

Is set-up photography not an art if you're using a digital camera? I did a huge photoshoot of eggs for a Photography assignment. Was I just making breakfast?

I don't personally like Poser work, but I also don't personally like most cubism. But can I see where there is artistic knowledge used towards both? Of course.
  18. Yes. On both counts. Especially the cod piece count >=D

I love drawing The Lounge Crooner!
  19. That better be a facepalm to keep your head exploding from the epic awesome!
  20. Yeah, the usual Bayani designs will be present (on the flag as well), its just easier to do them in PS than by hand. This one is destined for digital coloring anyway, so no sense in wasting time.

I also like this "castle as a model" idea. Makes things easier ^.^
  21. Also got another piece to be 100% on topic.

For this one, I'm mostly undecided as to background handling. I want to keep it simple, but it should still be forest-ie (with the castle way off in the distance).

  22. OK, this next one might be a HAIR off topic... but it is the critical thread and it is art-related! I need help on my essay for my application to transfer to Syracuse University next fall after I get my Associate's this spring. Pretty please with sugar and cherries and boobies on top!

    Here's the first draft.

The comments have my thoughts on it thus far. Basically, all the elements are there, but I'm not sure they're put together right...

I'm freaking out over every portion of this application. SU is very very competitive for transfer, but has exactly the illustration program I want to get into. Everything must. Be. PERFECT.

Oh, also, since this essay is for the Common App, its not supposed to pertain to a particular college, as it would be used for any college I'd apply to transfer to.
  23. Hey we got almost like... 20% on topic. That's gotta be pretty good for this sort of thread =P

I like the changes that you made to the piece, FD. Her forward arm might still be losing a lot of tension. If the fingers on that raised hand were more splayed again or tensed, I think it would do a better job of keeping the triangular centers of interest you have. With it straight, its kind of becoming one with the arm, and its leading my eye languidly down and off the page.
  24. On the group page, we've got a widget. I think comments into that folder will work out pretty well, because you can put links to refs in your comment =)
