  1. There's pros and cons to all voting systems. We can put out voting guidelines, but there's always going to be people who vote the way they do because their imaginary friend said so. But the pro is more community involvement (which is a huge part of this particular contest), and enough of a spread to make up for weird outliers.

A judging panel would have its own drawbacks. Has anyone here 100% agreed with every call a ref has ever made? The pro would be (in theory) more consitency.

Just keep in mind what the contest is for. It might be neat to have another contest with a judging panel at some point.
  2. You didn't miss anything, JK. I said in a few posts answering questions that you could make your pieces as simple or as complex as desired. I was pulling for a macaroni and glue Sistine Chapel ^.^

I don't know. I usually have breast-centric political platforms. But for England I would definitely make an exception and also add hot guys with sexy accents.

As for the vote, I don't have any reason not to qualify it. For all we know, several other non-explained voters could feel exactly the same way. I didn't say attention whores couldn't vote in the rules
  4. If Larissa commissions me for something again, I'm making her pay me in cake.
  5. Yep, the voting is quite fun to watch this month.
  6. I've updated the OP with the rules and deadlines and yadda yadda yadda.

    http://underpaintings.blogspot.com/2...l-elvgren.html

Although he copies his references closely, he isn't cheating or stealing because he shoots his own photos and pays his models. What I really admire about Elvgren is that he really knew how to make his painting better than his references. The same can be said about Andrew Loomis as well. So many artists copying from photo references only hope to be as good as photographs, and I have been guilty of this.
Drew Struzan is given movie stills and character shots from studios to work with, and he traces right off the stills. Its interesting to watch, because you can completely see how tracing isn't a short-cut to awesome. If he wasn't as skilled as he is, tracing wouldn't help.

His traces are just to get the "busy-work" done quickly. You can see the posters turn into art when he begins his rendering process. He uses a number of different techniques to breathe life into the scene. There's spattering, airbrushing, painting, colored pencil. It looks like so much damn fun. And in the end we have those completely iconic movie posters.

I don't think you can work off reference much more closely than he does for his construction phase, but the point is in the end the poster is light-years away from the simple movie stills.
  8. I was talking with my Figure Illustration teacher just a couple hours ago about how much nicer it is when you can take your own reference pictures. I'm doing a portrait of my sister, and it was really easy to bring my reference sheet together in Photoshop for exactly what I wanted because I had taken pictures of her in the rough setting/composition that I had previously sketched out. Just moved some things around to take my artistic license to make the composition stronger (like taking out tangents, making some elements bigger/smaller than they were in real life), and I'm all set with a nice photo-reference of everything in the places that I want them.

We discussed which elements of the photos I'll emphasize, and where I'll take out the emphasis in my actual piece. And she also said, as mentioned above, that its really nice to not have to worry a stitch about copyright issues when you've taken your own pictures.

Yeah, the self-elimination stuff is one of the things that I think puts a damper on the contest. And honestly, to call yourself done after a couple days of voting just comes off like sour grapes to me.

Do not let any of Frost's lies fool you! He voted for penguins. I knew he was going to vote for the penguins.
  11. Blood Wolffe- Who the heck was judging the show?

There we go! Pure as the driven snow, I'm sure.

Alrighty, that's fair enough. It just looked incredibly strange (as pointed out by Deebs) that two brand new accounts had the exact same votes less than half an hour apart.
  14. I also found that more than a little suspicious.

What boggles my mind is... if you're going to go far enough to cheat the vote in a contest like this one... why then make it horrifically obvious?

If these can be somehow proved to be honest votes, I'll take them. But otherwise, they're too questionable for my liking.
  15. LD, is there anywhere local that you can go? I think you pointed out the problems with internet-based groups. Good for some things, not so much for others. I've gotten more quality feedback from in-person group critiques than anywhere else.

I know you mentioned there was some sort of art classes nearby you at one point. Might be worthwhile to poke around there some more. There are also a lot of national groups that have local chapters, such as The Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators.

There are also illustrators who will do workshops and things at local museums and galleries, and that's also a good place to get some group feedback on your work.
  16. I enjoy the fact that this thread went from theme to cat in a bikini in just a handful of posts.

Something of interest to add to the interesting question; when preparing MY final portfolio, my advisor suggested I submit my sketchbook as well (which is full of small assignments, studies, master copies, thumbs for projects, etc. etc.), because sketchbooks are an excellent way for colleges and the like to see your problem-solving process. He got his masters in Illustration from the college I want to attend next, and knows one of the current professors there was hired solely on his sketchbook. Its a growing trend among many art programs now.

It makes sense, because your highly polished finals could have gotten there in a variety of ways. Seeing how you get there would definitely be a good measure of your ability.
  18. SINNERS AND SAINTS

For May’s theme, we’re going to be exploring the world of the Seven Deadly Sins and Seven Heavenly Virtues. This theme is actually my final Editorial Illustration assignment (except we’re only doing the sins, because we’re dark and evil illustration students), and I was enjoying it so much, I couldn’t help but share the wealth. I also realized that this good and evil theme would give the contestants lots of possibilities in a world of heroes, villains, and transvesti – er, rogues! Good symmetry all around.

There are a couple differing canons of the sins and virtues, but we’ll stick to the following breakdown to keep things simple:

The Sins – Wrath, Sloth, Greed/Avarice, Pride/Vanity, Lust, Envy, Gluttony

The Virtues – Chastity, Temperance, Charity, Diligence, Patience, Kindness, and Humility

There are a few ways to come at this theme. You can use CoH/V elements to illustrate a personification of a sin or virtue. You could perhaps show the consequences of the sins or the benefits of the virtues. Some nice juxtapositions would perhaps be finding the sins or virtues in unexpected places.

Keep in mind that these portrayals are not limited to scenes. Graphic design continues to be welcome. There are no medium restrictions (except for the visual art requirement) this month.

    THE RULES

    1. The Hot Chicks Rule- All entries must somehow include a hot chick!

    2. Keep It Clean- All entries must be direct-linkable on the boards. If its worse than PG-13, you will be disqualified.

    3. Use City of Heroes/Villains Elements- Your entry must somehow relate to City of Heroes/Villains either through character, setting, or some other means

    5. Visual Fan Art Only- We're not taking writing, music, or interpretive dance submissions

    DEADLINES
All entries must be posted to this thread or the dA group by MIDNIGHT US EASTERN TIME, SATURDAY MAY 22ND. Voting/the new theme will follow during that weekend. Its in the artists' best interest to get their pieces in early for feedback or in case there is a disqualifying element. Feel free to PM me with any questions or if you're unsure if something is within the rules.

My own sinful illustration is due on the 10th, so your FArt Mistress may have a little inspiration to offer up soon. Of course, my piece is not direct linkable (and NO, I’m not doing lust. Too obvious!), but I’m sure you heathens will be able to find your way!
  19. The female body is just a wonderfully visually appealing landscape!

Though actually, after recently doing a more in-depth study of the work of Paul Cadmus... I'm slowing coming to appreciate the male body a bit more as well.
  20. Hahaha, Frost put his piece up on our fridge, too =3
  21. Suichiro - I definitely get what you're swinging, but what you're talking about I've only ever heard referred to in texts and lectures as style, and the actual making of what you're doing as technique.

i.e. I can do a charcoal using a reductive technique, and I can see how your piece was clearly a take on Bruce Timm's style. Or I can ... make a cast using a lost wax technique, but the figure was done in the style of Rodin.

At first blush your point sounded like artists could call dibs on an entire media or something ^.^

Mostly a semantics thing, I think. Just reminded me of a professor talking about style the way you just talked about technique, but you're both talking about the same thing.

    >.>... he said he could tell when I wasn't into an assignment because I tended to ditch my style and slide right into neutral fine art stuff <.<
  22. Thank you VERY VERY VERY much to Bubbawheat for putting this post together so I could simply CCP it!! This is an excellent way to win brownie points with the FArt Mistress

Time to vote for this month's winner! We're still going to keep a 1,2,3 voting scheme. We have two people eliminated due to lack of qualifying entry, but WE ARE STILL GOING TO HAVE ANOTHER ELIMINATION. With the months left and the people we still have, its time to prune the numbers down further.

JohnnyKat has immunity and cannot be eliminated this month.

Voting will close at midnight, Friday April 30th. Next month's theme will be up soonish.

Also, I'd like some input on whether or not we should do a special battle to win a spot back in the running. I really liked this idea before we got going... but because most eliminations were due to non-submission or withdrawing, I don't know if this is really necessary.
