143. Pretend to be a female super-hero.
[/ QUOTE ]
But pretending to be a super-hero is okay, right?
[/ QUOTE ]
Never said I had a problem with males playing the role of a male super-hero. My problem is males playing the role of a FEMALE and leading on people to believe they are FEMALE IRL.
Not only that, but then taking it to the next level with involves sexual remarks that are unacceptable.
You should re-read the first 10 pages or so.
[/ QUOTE ]
I'm pretty sure you were against males in general playing female characters. Because that's what caused the uproar in the first place.
EVERYONE has agreed with you that people who lie about their gender IRL -for the purposes of disruption, aggravation, etc- are a bad thing.
It's the "guys roleplaying girls are bad" attitude that people are having trouble with.
[/ QUOTE ]
Wrong
I even said I had a female character. But I dont go around pretending I'm female when playing on that toon.
[/ QUOTE ]
You don't roleplay that character as female though, do you? Not say YOU YOURSELF are a female in real life, but roleplay the part of a female super-hero.
[/ QUOTE ]
I dont RP at all. When I log onto the game, I come to "play the game". I dont sit at work waiting until I can get home and assume the role of a super-hero and I surely don't get off pretending to be female....with respect to ANYTHING in life whether it be a RPing game or anything else.
When I would play Mario Cart, I never thought I was Mario. I would just sit and race around the stupid tracks.
I just don't get how people get off on pretending to be someone else or their character IN-GAME. Ok, I can understand on the forums. I can see that the RPing forum here is very active. Its text based and I get it. Its a way for people to be creative and express themselves. I don't think its the same IN-GAME. While in-game, it can and is taken to inappropriate levels. Sure, not by everyone I know. But when does it get turned off?
Again, how do I or anyone else know when you're RPing or just being straight up?
Wiki brought up a good point...is there a RP dedicated server here? If not, why not? If so, then don't bring that crap to other servers. -

It seems, this discussion is pretty valid on most MMORPG forums.
[/ QUOTE ] No it's not.
Putting down other people's playstyle, whether they be a powerleveler, marketeer, roleplayer, casual, hardcore, etc makes you(general you) a tool.
[/ QUOTE ]
Ok, its not because you say so.....
lol... -
Decided to look up MMORPG on Wiki and found some things to be rather interesting....
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MMORPG
Roleplaying
Some MMORPGs also may expect players to roleplay their characters that is, to speak and act in the way their character would act, even if it means shying away from other goals such as wealth or experience. However, as this behavior is far from being the norm, most MMORPG players never actually play the roles of their characters.[10] Still, MMORPGs may offer "RP-only" servers for those who wish to immerse themselves in the game in this way.
Culture
Some players might look down on those who invest huge amounts of time and or money into a game, while others might scorn those who can't put in the time to "play properly". The validity of such viewpoints is heavily debated, with both sides of the issue being discussed frequently on most games' forums.
---------------
So.....Its not as "normal" as some of you think to actually play the "role" of your character IN-GAME. There's actually fewer of you than there are those who just "play the game"
Secondly, its pretty clear there's a great number of people who share my view about RPing in general. It seems, this discussion is pretty valid on most MMORPG forums. I can't say for sure because this is the first game I've spent any great amount of time playing.
So while I try to understand the fun factor in becoming someone you arnt, know that I'm not the only person who thinks its weird and rather off-putting.
Just added something new to the list of things I rather not do duing my life...

see that is something I have been debateing. if I run tough, weave, combat jumping, and hotfeet at the same time i tend to burn end really fast like withing 10 to 15 seconds. I have stamina 3 slotted for end reduction with 25 lvl ios. I could pop some 30's int there but no sure its that big of a difference.

Endurance will be a slight problem with your fire/kin until you hit lvl 35. -

I don't need to assume they were male. They were male. Some of the things that came out of their mouths, females dont say.
Period.
End of story.
[/ QUOTE ]
Um?
Like what I must ask
[/ QUOTE ]
I'm not going to repeat it here. But if you really need "proof", you're more than welcome to come to Champion and I'll give you a temporary invite to the SG so you can ask our other members about this issue yourself.
Things were said that just dont come out of females mouths, even in a RPing enviroment. That's just the bottom line. Things were said to myself, my girlfriend, and my other SG members what were totally unacceptable and really crossed the line. It really was some disgusting crap.
Again, that said, I have my opinions about RPers. If that makes you think less of me, so be it. I can live with that. I'm sure a lot of people think the exact same way I do and have had similar experiences. You've prolly pounced on them just like you have me. Thats fine, I didnt expect anything less.
I think its sad that some of you don't see the forest for the trees here. We played with these people for 6 months straight and the lol reasons we got were just that.
Some of you are either really ignorant to the people around you or just don't care. I dont know which is worse. -

What planet do you guys live on where its a social norm (even online) for guys to pretend they are females?
I guess I'm just ignorant to the fact its acceptable. I can live with that.
[/ QUOTE ]
Actually, I just had a thought. What do you think about women who play male characters?
Both my ex-girlfriends did that, in another MMO. You can tell we're in the 21st century when a guy has to smile and nod politely throughout dinner...while his girlfriend talks about a video game.
("Yes, I'm listening. Dual-wield daggers, you said? Are you going to finish that soup?")
Last time I ran a tabletop game, Dungeons and Dragons, dice and paper - most of my players were girls. There was one guy. But y'know what? Most of the characters they made were men.
[/ QUOTE ]
Did she go around hitting on chicks while playing a dude? -
[ QUOTE ]
Something here needs to be cleared up...
Role Playing: To assume the role of a fictional character for the purposses of entertainment.
Pretending(By what War Admiral claims happened to him): To claim to be female, when actually male, for personal gratification.
Lets say War Admiral is correct in his assumption that the two players he mentioned were in fact male. Also assuming that they denied being male, and not just showed up as girl toons, and acted as such, is lying, not role playing.
These two things are not the same.
War Admiral, you have every right to be exclusive in your SG. You want to know the person, and feel they are your friend, and friends are honest(Again, I'm assuming they denied being male). What they did then, was not role playing. I hope that you will be able to seperate that idea, from role playing in your mind.

Oh, please, do you think we're that stupid? You come in here with the communication skills and attitude of a thug-wannabe punk teenager and now expect us to believe you're "old"?

Actually, I come here with a Southern Redneck attitude. Cherry always calls me a stupid redneck.
I laugh.

Generalizing and name-calling is not "respecting it". It's exactly the opposite.
And I just noticed your sig. 2 months and 5 level 50s. MA PL n00b. Nothing to see here.

Yeah, I PL my toons. I've done pretty much everything in the game in 9 months. Its what keeps me paying $15 a month.

[/ QUOTE ]
Well, if you look at today's news, the whole same-sex marriage debate is still going on in the United States...
The fact that it is a debate demonstrates that there aren't universal social norms regarding sexual identity and gender concepts.
If everyone agreed on an acceptable standard, there wouldn't be a debate.
Now. You don't think men playing female characters in an online game is acceptable. Fine. You're entitled to your opinion. I'm sure a lot of folks think like you.
But you must also accept that there are many many people who disagree, and don't see any problem at all.
[/ QUOTE ]
I can accept there are people who have no problem with guys playing girls. I know by posting in this thread, I was gonna shake the hornets nest so to speak. But my experience with RPers in this game was NOT a good one. It was terrible.
Therefore, I have strong opinions about those who RP. How do I know when you're RPing? How do I know when you're being honest?
As a small SG, we like to "know" the people we let in. We dont stand outside of Atlas asking every new alt to join. We dont recruit at all. We accept quality over quantity. I said before, they were great players. But I just don't get off on being around those people pretending to be someone else. I guess I'm out of the loop of todays generation. Maybe I'm too old to understand.
Or maybe you guys are just weird! -

Wow. You must live in a very, very small world. I encourage you to get out and experience the bigger picture. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

I'm sorry, I should have been more specific. The "guys" I hang around dont pretend to be girls. And I still feel sorry for the "boys" who do.

Btw...I have a female toon. Thats not anything that bothers me. I dont care when guys have female toons, thats not the issue at all. Its being told you're female when infact you're male. Thats the issue I have.
[/ QUOTE ]
So what business is it of yours? Why did you want to know in the first place?
And more to the point, so a random Internet stranger who has no obligation whatsoever to tell you the truth about a completely meaningless question lied to you. So what? And you are telling us to get a life?
Sheez.
[/ QUOTE ]
When you're in our SG, you have an obligation to be upfront and honest as to who you REALLY are. If you're not, then I'll show you the door.
Whether we're 5 strong or 50 matters not. We let in people we know and trust. Liars can join your SG if they want. -

Are you tring to compare actors who get paid millions to act to people on the internet paying $15 a month?
lolz
Oh.....my......lord.
[/ QUOTE ]
Another gem of wisdom. Role-playing is only okay if you're making millions of dollars doing it then?
*sigh...* I give up. If you have some kind of insecurity, that's your problem, and I doubt that random Internet strangers are going to be able to fix whatever your hangup is. At least I have the comfort in knowing that you're well in the minority of people that the concept of boys playing girls and vice versa bothers.
[/ QUOTE ]
Really? I'm in the minority? You have any sorts of statistics to back that claim up or are you just spouting off more non-sense and jargon that sounds good, yet has no backing what-so-ever.
From where I'm from, guys dont pretend to play girls. Obviously from where you're from, they do. I'm sorry you have to live around those types of "boys"...I really am.
Did I ever say it bothered me that females play males? That's perfectly fine. I have a problem with being lied to by guys playing girls. If you can't get that through your clever and sly notation, then there's no help. Just log off.
Call it a double standard if you will. -

From that point on...I just assume punch RPers in the face. They're useless if you ask me. Dudes RPing as chicks......get a life. Seriously.
[/ QUOTE ]
That's one of the most stupid things I think I've ever seen anyone ever write on these forums.
So some guys pretended to be female, it really bothers you that much? I used to play Taxibot Belle, and I tried not to let on that I did because frankly, it's not of your damn business what gender I am. (Which later became kind of amusing when I was called a liar for honestly saying that I don't now, but I digress...) I've played other female characters too, about half and half. I've run across several guys who roleplay female characters, and yes, even females who play male characters.
Interesting point of fact, back when I was playing Taxibot Belle, one of the other long-time members in the garage was actually a girl playing a guy character. A really good-looking one at that, who didn't like playing girl characters because she didn't like people (probably people like you, I'm guessing) constantly asking her, "r u hot irl?" Nowadays, as far as I can gather, there is around a 50/50 split of males/females in the Taxis, and both have been known to play Taxis of the opposite gender.
It's not limited to games. Robin Williams played a guy playing a woman in Tootsie. Martin Lawrence has played "Big Momma." In ancient theater up until even the time of Shakespeare, men played all of the parts, including women. Julie Kavner (a girl!) does the voice of Bart Simpson (a boy!). Erin Chase (a girl!) is one of the actors/actresses who has voiced Charlie Brown (a boy!).
You are obviously willfully oblivious to the very concept of what role-playing is. Having a problem with guys playing female characters while accepting that it's okay to pretend to be able to fly, shoot lightning from your hands, and other such silly stuff... One could just as easily tell you to get a life. Seriously.
You don't like RP in an MMORPG? Picked a hell of a genre of game to play there, Einstein. I'm sorry, were you expecting a dating service?

Well you do seem to have a pretty emotional response to this. It seems to have riled you up a bit.
Im just saying the problem might not be with RPers, but with your ideas about gender and sexuality. It sounds like just the idea of guys playing gals weirds you out thats all.
*GO GO armchair psych mode*
[/ QUOTE ]
You're on target now....guys playing girls DOES weird me out as it should a lot of people. Whats the point? I just dont get it.
I wouldnt have a problem with a RPer in general. Lord knows, I prolly team with a lot of them not knowing. But they surely dont come across as "females" being dudes and if they do have a female toon, I know its a male behind the screen because they had enough respect to tell me up front.
These 2 people led the 5 of us on (even my girlfriend) to believe they were female. That's just wrong on so many levels its......just......gross. -
