The thing is a fiarly straightforward Tankermind build with capped ranged defence, and a secondary focus on bonus hit points.
I feel fairly good about it, but I do wish I could get the recharge down on Anguishing Cry and Painbringer - I've always been iffy about buffs and debuffs that cant be at least /near/ perma. Any advice?
Thanks, as always, in advance - the people on these forums are wonderful!

Quote:Grr... stupid pets. Itsd mostly a placeholder build for demons though - I want to familiarize myself with the pet controls in this game. SO here's hoping I suppose.Ninjas and Necromancy are both sets with melee-oriented henchmen all the way. Only the Lich from Necromancy is ranged with no melee, and most of his powers snare and knock down mobs so the Tier 1 and 2s can thrash 'em, and aren't specifically made for damage.
In other words, you're not going to find Ranged DPS with either.
Thank you both, by the by. Necromancy it is. -
Really the title says it all. MId's cannot show me te detailed abilities of my pets, so I turn to the wisdom of the boards instead. My minions need t be able to deal damage from range to maximize the effectiveness of the build. Are Zombies or Ninja the etter choice for that? Robots would be best, I suspect, but Im not willing to compromise my theme quite that far.
-
Nor I, but I've only been back for a very short time to this game, and I've noticed that City of Heroes - or at least Virtue Server - has a number of peculiarities, so I certainly don't doubt you. I agree - it seems vaguely rediculous.
When I read the line I had assumed it was some new trend for people to use when doing things that they're afraid may not succeed by reason of the opposition of others, but the conflict is too minor to be taken to actual PvP - EG "Valentyna would smack Captain Excelsior upside the head" with the implication that I will succeed IF they allow it. That would make sense to me.
In something like your example above, though, it just simply doesn't make sense. Not to me anyway, and I don't think grammatically either. -
Ahh! I needed to run as admin. *is ashamed* Thank you!
-
It is, I know, not a technical bug in the /game/ but this was the only place I could think of to post it. Everytime I try to patch Mid's with the latest update, I get an error message and the program fails to load. I recently re-downloaded it, and it wont work still (plus now I dont even have the older version). I cant possibly be the only one wiht this issue - what have others done about it?
-
Quote:Correct me if Im mistaken but I thought that all attacks could have only one damage tag and one positional tag. So although tis true that the majority of attacks deal some smashing or lethal damage, its not necessarily true that the majority of attacks have the smashing/lethal damage tag. While that is true, some 60% of the attacks in the game have a smashing or lethal component. The most common ranged attack in the game by far is machine gun fire, which is pure lethal damage. Most melee attacks have a smashing or lethal component, with a few exceptions. And the exceptions are mostly player powers, I can't think of too many NPCs that are going to hit you with Mind Probe, and only a couple have Scorch.
Energy melee attacks are all part smashing, electric melee is part smashing except for a couple powers. Fire Sword (which is fairly common actually) is part lethal. Obviously smash/lethal covers your basic punch and knife or sword attacks as well.
Smashing and lethal defense actually gives you more protection that is readily apparent, since it covers any attack that has a smashing or lethal component, even if it includes another damage type. -
Quote:If you only want 2 slots for the ranged def I suppose. If you want the AoE defence as well, I am discovering that that 3rd slot is EXPENSIVE - the -kb recipes are going for something like 100m.If your blaster is /MM, I'd really go for S/L then. You'll often want to go in the middle of a mob to use Drain Psyche and Psy Shockwave, and WoC while being a decent mitigation and a good spot for the purple set, wont prevent you from being hit/stun alot. The main annoyance is the cold armor spoiling your costume, as well as the price of the kinetic combat sets.
On the other hand, if you think you can maintain range almost all the time because it fits better to your playstyle, then go for range soft cap for sure. Stacking zephyr sets is not that expensive at all. -
Quote:Maneuvers with full Red Fortune adds more total to defence than CJ with full Blessing of the Zephyr. And exemplaring... *shudders*... just no! MOre importantly though, I found I needed the accuracy boost from tactics badly against high level enemies. Assault I dont need, of course, but an extra 10% damage boost is more useful than any of the options from my primary or secondary. Also, I realize you've taken 4 pools already, but other blaster builds going for defense will do well taking both CJ and Hover and putting a full Zephyr in each. 2 powers and 4 extra slots give +3.5% Def(all), +6.26% Def to ranged and AoE, and 8 points of KB prot. It's a good starting base. Also if you take both, you probably don't care about how well-enhanced CJ is for +jump, so you can put an entire level 10 Zephyr set in there; then you've got KB prot and a bit of defense even when exemped down to 10.

Quote:Ive found in the course of playing my leveling build that 2 recharge SOs was enough to bring Build Up and Aim up to lead off pretty much every fight. With 37.5% global, recharge and +42% from a level 50 recharge IO the bonus to their recharge will actually be significantly higher than this. With Hasten running, I often had them come back in the middle of a long fight for re-use, and generally towards the end of an average one, so they were certainly there for the next battle. ITs cutting things a bit fine, I agree, but I don't see another way.Looking at your build.... even with 37.5% recharge and hasten... I'm still kinda shocked you couldn't find another slot for a second recharge for BU. It's going to add more damage than a 2-3% global damage buff. I guess I'm just used to working in Aim and BU into every attack chain... usually alternating them, though I do love firing PB-Aim-BU-Ice Storm-Blizzard. A decent 3-slotting for BU is Rechg + TH/Rechg from Adjusted Targeting plus a recharge IO, for +97% recharge, +16% to-hit, and +2% global damage in only 3 slots.
Speaking of recharge... and having just leveled up my ST-heavy ice blaster... you have almost no recharge in your Psi Tornado? I'll admit I don't max recharge on my Ice Storm and Blizz, but I found room for a 6th slot for each of those, to allow a 5-set plus a recharge IO, so at least it's over 60%. Planning a respec at 50 now, I'm strongly leaning toward maxing Ice Storm for damage and recharge and not bothering with a set (also leaving more room for procs). I may leave 5 positron's blast in blizzard since of course I don't always use it when it's up. Since I currently have eight 6-slotted ice powers and I'm planning on adding Frost Breath (skipped it while leveling), I need the slots.
It's just that I often find myself in team situations where things are rolling so fast that ice storm becomes my most useful attack. It's why I'm adding Frost Breath to my main 50 build, ice/nrg is so short on AoEs. Though to be honest, high ST blaster damage is very useful when there are lots of runners or things missed by other people's AoEs, like on an ITF with no tank (or a team that's melting faces so fast that herding is a waste of time).
I'm getting rid of the full Gaussian's from Aim since it's more useful overall to cap recharge on Aim, and I can sure use the 3 or 4 slots that will save me.
That's a tradeoff question that every blaster will face when trying to boost defense with IO sets: is it really worth wasting 3 slots to 6-slot a Gaussian's, just for 2.5% on the 3 positional defenses? The Gaussian's set bonuses are all nice, I'm not scoffing at the 2.5% rec and damage that come at (4) and (5). But if you're just slotting Aim/BU/Concentration/Tactics for effectiveness, 3 slots is enough, often 2 is fine. And a full level 50 Gaussian's only boosts recharge 73.78%, which is leaving 7-8 seconds on the table for a base 90s recharge power. I want my BU! (In Tactics that recharge is just wasted.)
You're right about Psionic Tornado too. I considered removing the PB proc and replacing it with a recharge IO, but thats only a difference of 1 second according to my hero builder. I felt the higher (average) damage was more useful.
EDIT: Also, having gone to look at it just now, the builder tells me that adding a second recharge IO to build up or aim is a difference of only about 5 seconds (~36 seconds to recharge, versus ~31). You really think its worth it for the extra 5 seconds difference? I could take the proc out of Psionic Tornado, and the Kismet out of hover, but Im not sure I want to do those things unless I really have to.
Probably, I will play with the build for a while, and if I decide that it really needs more recharge for those powers, I will figure it out and respec at that time.
EDIT 2: The build above actually has an error I've corrected - it has the Obliteration set instead of the Armageddon set, *** eh global recharge should actually be 42.5% (and global damage buff only 17%). -
It was a week ago, for me. Painful it may be, but then its over, and you have an accolade to show for it. I found it was well worth the price.
-
Ha! Not to worry. I still appreciate the advice.
-
*le sigh* As ussual Im convinced. I wnet back to the drawing board again, and came up with this. Final AoE Defence is 29% with all toggles running, and it manages to still have +20% global damage, and capped hit points. I wouldn't mind finding some way to raise the recharge higher though - its only +37.5%

Hmm. Maybe you're right. It just always seems to me that the first responsibility of a DPS class is to do exactly that. *le shrug* I will defiantly give it some thought, and let you know which way I decide.
-
Well, I decided to keep the mez, but I have been tinkering. I realized as I did the numbers that I had a problem with accuracy, so I made some changes to ensure I can hit +4s with something resembling reliability (still not quite 95% unfortunately
). Unforutnatly this means my AoE defence is back down around 15% as opposed to 25%. DO you guys really think Ill be taking much more damage that way?

Hmm, still looking at replacing Shocking Bolt with Static Discharge as suggested earlier. I do have a quandry though that maybe you all can help with (you've been tremendously helpful already, BTW - thanks a bunch!) - if I do that, then what do I do to make up the loss of defence from ditching Lockdown? For the life of me, I cant see where else to get it.
-
Oh, it also has really GREAT -KB for PvM play. Aside from Nemesis' staff, IS there anythign that tops 23?
-
Hmm. I thought about your advice, and came up with this. It looses 2.5% +damage, and 7.5% recharge speed, but gives up nothing in ranged defence, and come sup with over 28% AoE defence.
And before you ask, yes, I did remove total focus rather than simply strip the set out of brawl. I cant imagine ever using it. Meleee is what tnaks are for. More to the point, closing to melee to use it would quickly obviate the point of this whole excercise.
I wonder if there's isnt something mroe useful I could place instead of conserve power that I can get a recharge bonus. *wishes she could take a 5th power pool and have another LotG mule*

Is AoE damage that useful? How many bad guys /have/ AoE attacks that are not also tagged as ranged?
You're quite right aout the focus incidnelty - all my builds - PvP or PvM are designed as soloists. Usually I end up rather better than average at group play as well, if I do say so myself (and I do... more frequently than my guildmates usually prefer XD), but solo performance is the actual build objective. I do agree with you about the AoE damage, though. Static Discharge would be nice! I just wonder how to fit it into the build. I could replace Static Bolt with it, easilly enough, but I think I would miss the CC. Still... you cant really hold the actually dangerous mobs (bosses) in one application with it, can you? -
Im obsessive that way - money is no object. I thought of slotting them in the same power, but this way I can actually get the +2.5% set bonus from Gladiator's Armor as well.
And hank you very much for the more detailed defence explanation. I appreciate it. -
Ooo, just had a though - Rise of the Phoenix seems awesome, but what if I went electricity instead? I assume the +3$ defence vs. all unique from Steadfast Protection will stack with the one from Gladiator's Armor if I slot it into Surge of Power?
-
Someon asked for a build - this is what I have currently:
With Combat Jumping and Hover running, it comes to about 42.1% ranged defence. I wish I could make up the last 2.9% for a 'perfect score' so to speak, but I really dont wnt to replace more Devestations with Thunderstrikes.
Any advice, either on defence stacking, or in general (these are the blaster forums - Im always happy for a little build critique) would be appreciated. Thanks!

Really? SO a levle 55 mob has thesame chacne to hit you as a level 45 one? Hmm! Eureka!
One other thing - doesn't six-slotting Thunderstrike into your attacks cripple your DPS since you then can't proc them out at all? -
Quote:But defense will suffer form the Scale to relative level effects in this game. The 30-35% that makes you godly against even level mobs surely wont work against +5s, will it?Yeah, def cap isn't necessarily needed. I really notice when my Blasters get their defense to 20%, and they do quite well in the 30-35% range... gives you enough to dodge most incoming attacks while you drop your foes quickly. I think I usually set my solo missions at being considered 3-4 heroes, and that works pretty well. Been running my AR/EM through the Tina Macintyre and Maria Jenkins missions just fine... been fighting the AVs as EBs, but I've done fine against them all: even the ones with annoying Tier 9s.
-
Hey all! Im working on a proper PvE setup for my Psi/EM blaster, with IOs and everything, and Im trying to work out a what to slot for. At first, it was the same thing as in PvP - capped HP, recharge, damage, and recovery, in that order. The other day, though, someone told me I should think about defence - that it was possible to reach tremendously high levels through IOs.
That sounded wonderful to me - Tank Mage FTW! - but when I aske dhim how he laughed, called me a n00b, and left. Fair enough I guess - nothing obliges him to teach me how to play. But I AM curious.
So I come to you, hoping for ideas from a pool of leet blaster players who... aren't bastards (hopefully).
Long windup, I know - I apologize.
Here's the heart of things though: WHAT SETS (AND POWERS TO HANG THEM ON) SHOULD I TAKE IN ORDER TO MAXIMIZE RANGED DEFENCE?
Thanks so much in advance. I always appreciate the help.
