But...is this month's "hot chick" rule mean just a female? Any female will do? I've studided all the entries, and yes, I know, everyone's definition of "hawtness" is their own. But seriously, review them all, tell me where the "hot chick" is?

Is Alice "hot", and just her image or reference to it fulfill the requirements of Rule #1?

    Not arguing...just saying.
If I remember back at the first month, there were points where it was stated even just a woman's foot would've done, or a cross-dressing character, or a stick figure with large, round circles, or even a baby chicken that's burning. There has also been mention of being the "intent" that matters.

I get the feeling its not strictly, specifically as narrow as needing a generally acknowledged 'Playboy Bunny' to fulfill the requirement for a valid entry -- but the viewer's perception of how attractive each entry's 'Hot Chick' is *does* seem to matter in terms of how many votes an entry gets (especially in February's battle).

I could be wrong in my interpretation, however.
  2. All the really good, witty responses have been taken!

So I'll just go with: Congratulations!

I had a more elaborate idea, but it wasn't going to happen in a few hours. I wanted Alice to do bullet rain on a group of carnies in St. Martial. The bullets would have been engraved with the words "EAT ME", and upon getting hit, the carnies would turn into a deck of cards.
I just wanted to say, man - I think the simple subtly of your piece is really quite amazing. So few elements, in such simple, raw form, yet I 'got' it immediately - I immediately recognize Alice, even without much detail, The two-pistols instantly links to the new Game powerset, and the two, tiny playing cards call forth the Queen of Hearts' army of card-men. Nothing more is needed, really - those few, well chosen bits speak their parts clearly!

Its a good piece, and deserves to stand proudly in the company of many good pieces.

(didn't mean that to be so mushy - but really, its a good piece!)
  4. All of the entries were great this month!, but here's my votes:

    1st: Johnnykat's "The Alice Plot"
    2nd: Happy-Dan's (Bindweed's) "Eat Me"
    3rd: PyroNympho's "Countess Of Hearts"

I'll be getting the vote up today. My errands took way longer than anticipated yesterday, and I needed to get certain amounts done on my homeworks. I'm starting to go more than a little COMPLETELY INSANE to land another 4.0 this semester.... because I'll be applying to Syracuse University for their illustration program in the fall o.o
That sounds like a very worthy reason for the delay, Wassy. No problem!

Lotsa great entries this time, and some real variety, too! Caemgen, I'm glad you did get the piece in. And Toxic_Shia, I like both your pieces as well!

Sad to lose the other contestants, tho - but real life is real, and that does tend to take priority.

Maybe they'll be able to return when Wassy has the option for that? (hope hope hope)

I don't use the mouse, mostly because I don't have room on my computer desk to leave the tablet up all the time & when I do use the tablet, its in my lap, in front of the keyboard. So, the tab-mouse wouldn't be in the right place.

I use a mouse for some things (like polygonal lasso selecting) because its a little easier for me to do than with the pen (I find I all too often click too fast and it thinks its a double-click and closes the selection too soon).

I use the pressure for brush size, or effect strength mostly. The greater pressure sensitivity levels allows for a bit more subtlety, although that assumes that I'm capable of that level of pen control (which I'm still struggling with).

I expect to be thankful for the pressure sensitivity even more once I get into using 3d Coat for modeling and normal-mapping. But thats a little ways off.
  13. Congrats to Clutch, Lousy_Day, and Juggertha for winning top honors this month. Well deserved.

and Congrats, too, to the rest for some worthy entries.
  14. Tartyrsause, that is one of the most disgusting things I have ever read on a forum, anywhere. and I find it offense to have a group of artists compared to such. not funny at all to me.

I think I will stay away for a while. Have a nice week everyone.
    aaawwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww Crap!

Lousy_Day, I don't think you have anything to apologize for.

I hope *YOU* have a better, happier weekend. (Its looking like rain tonight where I am) Do something fun & enjoyable out there. Listen to some good music. Something away from all this. Something real.

I just .. don't think it should have gone this way. shouldn't.
  16. Very useful stuff, PsiBug! Thank you!

    and cool art, too!!

and soulasylum! Dang! That really makes me wish I could afford Illustrator! Very handy tool! (but I'm just too broke)

I don't know what kind of schooling or training you actually have, but I do believe that U-naught had a simple enough question that didn't require a complex and over stated answer and a tit-for-tat argument from the forum gurus.

So lets all go back to reading Alice in Wonderland!
I almost wish I hadn't asked my question in the first place.

I never meant to create an opportunity for strife.

I really just wanted to know how big (in terms of pixels, cuz thats what I'm concerned with) other digital artists were working, because I was feeling cramped at the size I was working.

I expected to find out either I was working foolishly too small ('Dude! We're all working at 20,000 by 60,000 pixels! How can you get anything to work as small as you do!?!') or that I was working at the same size everyone else is and just suck ('Dude, you just need to paint better!'). I guess expectations are like assumptions.

Yes, I'm talking size in pixels. That's what I'm thinking in. I'm only aiming at images for the computer screen, on the web. When I crunch it down for the final .jpg to post on DA, I'm thinking of how many pixels wide by how many pixels high it'll be.

When I get to a point where I'll be considering printing, I'll be able to think in dots per inch and pixels per inch.

As I pm'ed to Lousy_Day, yes, he understood what I was asking, in the way I asked it.

I really don't want anybody getting ruffled over this. I respect all of you as artists. But I also respect your individual rights to speak your own minds and argue your own points.

(sniff!) I LOVE you guys and gals!
  18. yeah, overall pixels is really all I'm worried about right now.

I just want to be able to get the good detail in the face when I'm working.

the final export to a screen-viewable .jpg will always be smaller than my working size. (maybe when I'm much better, I'll think about printing and clients all that fun stuff )

I really do appreciate all the helpful replies, thanks all.
  19. Yeah, Lousy-Day, I'm more interested in overall number of pixels people are working at, as I'm not generally aiming at a printed piece as my final result. (although I *am* doing a big re-touching piece for my Sister that will be printed at some Giclee shop when its done and then framed. But thats an aberration for me )

So, really, I was mostly looking to see if I'm working much smaller than others.

It seems like that is the case, from what you've all said (ppi conversions considered). So, I think I'm going to start working larger. I'll try double or maybe even triple and see how that works.

I do use lots of layers, and I do zoom in and out a lot. (I'm trying not to spend the entire time zoomed-in, tho. I need to be able to realize the image as a whole, otherwise it doesn't come out right.)

its funny, I checked the .psd files just now, specifically the ones that were final before I shrank em for export to .jpg. Looks like I went from 72 ppi, to 250 ppi, to 150 ppi. I know I didn't even look at that before, didn't set or change it in PS. So I must've set it on the scanner when I scanned in the pencils.

So, thank you all for your replies! I appreciate the assistance!
  20. I've been doing stuff in photoshop at about twice my final-submission size. So that's around (1714 wide by 1380 tall), or (1890 wide by 2403 tall). Then I collapse all the layers and shrink it to 50% before saving out as a JPG.

And when it came to doing the face, I felt pretty cramped. I'm thinking I need to go up bigger, but I'm worrying about bad, slow performance. (I'm already seeing a lot of paint-stroke time-lag).

What size do all of you other digital artists work at?

awww! Really sorry to see that!

Hope everything's okay! Or are you just focusing on getting the book finished? Either way, good luck right back at you!
  22. I ... believe I have ... an ... IDEA

ooooooooooh, boy. Yep. Its a doozy, too.

    This might work.
(provided, I don't get eliminated this month, that is)

HEY! Wassy! Have you figured out the hinted-at "win our way back in" rules, yet?
  23. well, I've gone back and forth and flopped around a bit, and (even though I'm pretty happy with how my own entry came out) here's my vote:

    1st place = Clutch's 'A Very Special Valentine'

    2nd place = Johnnykat's 'Carnieval Cruise Poster'

    3rd place = Happy Dan's 'Liberty Girl'

and honorable mentions go out to Everybody! Great Job everyone!
