I'd rather read something that's a good story and has a lot of fun moments like Green Lantern. But really I'd much rather read a Great Story that isn't anything like an Action Movie, like JLA the Nail, Kingdom Come, New Frontier or Marvels.(Wow only one Marvel Book in that list... I guess Quesada is more like MacFarlane)
Alright, I can respect you don't like Deadpool. But you gotta know, Deadpool has one of the most serious and depressing life stories in the Marvel universe. Given the Marvel universe, that's pretty bad. He should actually be more emo than most. He's not. He's mostly there to do a tongue in cheek mocking of the srsbznz of most of the Marvel world.

Given that, I mostly like Deadpool because most of the srsbznz in the Marvel world bores me, rather than captivates me (for example, I also love Kingdom Come. Brilliant, brilliant writing and oh, the art!). But again, ymmv, everyone has their own opinion, yadda yadda yadda.

Deadpool has a lot of one liners, but there's a whole wealth of really serious and gut wrenching things he both has gone through, and brought about himself. Blind Al is a reallllly good example of that. How he died is another.

As for playing whichever - with light RP at best it should be an issue, and wildly different attitudes between characters simply means that there can be some byplay between characters as they react differently. Or want to strangle each other. Or whatever.

As for me, I'm still waiting until there's a more definitive list, so I can come up with something that won't cause problems when I'm there, but won't be critical when I'm not.
Whenever I can poke my head in, I volunteer my old fart for Fallout bait.

And I did plan on rping him a bit--I mean, come on, an old, cranky man? Seriously, I can't pass that up. But, if it annoys people, I can drop the rp at any time.

My latest self-induced exile was to finish school, buy a house and get married, which has all been accomplished. I poked back in for a month and didn't see much has changed, so I'm poking back out.

I wish CoH loads of success, and hope it gets even Awesome-er so I'll have some new stuff to mess with in the future. I don't think CO is the savior and the game CoH should have been - It's simply a superhero game that I want to try, just like Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2, Batman: Arkham Asylum, DC Online, and even DC Vs. Mortal Kombat. I'm a fan of comics, so if you make a game based on a comic-inspired atmosphere, I'm interested.

I've only played a little of CO, and so far I don't like the battle system and the movement is off, which could be due to the intense lag I'm getting over there currently. I'm going to try it with a 360 pad when the head start weekend begins this week to see if I like that any better. The graphics, which generally don't bother me (My SNES games get as much play as my PS3 ones do), are quite an eyesore in this game. So damn bright.
Yeah, wasn't really sure what kinda poster you were, just that you posted a fair bit. I definitely hung out only occasionally in the Infinity forums--just wasn't my cup of tea back when.

And the movements seem a bit off--more like WoW graphics/playstyle/movement than anything else, at least from the little I've seen and played. I do love their stances to death, but a cool resting stance is not enough for me to play a game for (ok, and I love their beetle wings. Again, not worth it...).

And I heard a rumor the graphics look better/less of an eyesore if you turn off the outlining effect. YMMV, haven't played enough to bother trying it myself.
  4. Er, while I'm kinda a newcomer to actually posting much, especially in the Infinity forums...I did used to lurk quite a bit.

If I am remembering my Infinity history correctly, Chris used to be a pretty active member on Infinity. Helping with the community, and whatnot. Or he was one of our lolzdrama people who helped dub Infinity the 'drama' server. Either or...

He isn't exactly bashing CoX, just mentioning that he was moving on (permanently or not, I'm not sure), and asking if any of the people he's been playing with for umpteenump years are going to be there as well. Given that both Chris and the OSHA's have 'left' the game multiple times (again, relying on memory, apologies if I'm wrong), I wouldn't really be getting my panties in a bunch over them doing what amounts to a goodbye post and asking if friendly folk will be going where they are.

And given the revolving door that seems to be attached to the game, I'm betting they'll probably stick their heads back in, in the future. It happens. And also given quite a few people will probably be doing trials of CO while simultaneously playing CoX...it, in a roundabout way, does relate to the community.

Though the idea of CoX forumites forming a community outside of CoX in the rival's game makes me chuckle.

And tl;dr, No one asked you to read this thread, and no one is forcing you to continue reading this thread. There are other active threads in the Infinity forum. If this is really pissing you off that bad--GO READ THOSE.

Thank you, and this friendly PSA has been brought to you by the color green, for envy, and the letter D, for drama.
  5. I wouldn't recommend taking /storm and not taking either Freezing Rain or Snowstorm. But, I'm biased, I love Freezing Rain to death (and to a lesser extent, Snowstorm). I'd look into recoloring Freezing Rain, like suggested earlier. It's just that good of a power.

That being said...it is a possible build, but you'll get more bang for your buck if you're skipping those to focus on micromanaging the other powers to make up for lack of mitigation and debuff from them. For example, learn how to brush badguys with Hurricane, and then switch it off and use the 'run away!' in Hot Feet to keep you relatively safe. Basically, it'd make your life harder.

    Not impossible, say, but harder.

'Course I also love bizarre builds (I've been known to take Jump Kick and use it in my attack chain, a completely 'natural' scrapper with no travels and only Fitness as a pool power, and I have Provoke on a corr), so...take my advice with a grain of salt.

Your other option? Therm with none of the buffs. Except for maybe Thaw or Forge. I understand not liking to buff, though most of my characters are buff heavy...but sometimes, I just want to shoot/control/smash things in the face. And before people get cranky, I actually will occasionally duo with someone with a therm corr with nothing but Forge and the heals. He actually works well, and can keep himself and others alive. It's just different than normal.

And I have a high fire/rad cont. I refuse to bother giving people warning for AM. Either they're close or they're not. Tough beans, they should be ok without my buffs. If I'm feeling nice, I'll try to get next to someone with end issues. ...maybe. Buffs are nice, but not vital to playing, and are certainly not what my fire controller is about. I made her to burn things up, not wait for people to gather around me while I fire off my AoE heal or buff.
  6. Put me down as a 'maybe'. I'll need to wait for work schedules to come through to see if I can make it on Tuesdays at that time...

And I'll probably be a VEAT (Crab/Wolf/Bane) named Operative Curmudgeon.

    AR/?

I didn't have hover...I went with a 'concept' toon, and basically made her as fast as I could. Hasten, SS, other SS, attacks actually got +recharge slotted into them...and no IOs when I was leveling her, so no mez protection/resist/etc, and she still has no KB protection.

For many, many levels, Beanbag was my bestest friend. Oh Beanbag, my love for you shall ne'er wane.

Storm - a great secondary to keep stuff away from you at range. Also freezing rain + your attacks.

Dark - already mentioned. Good solid choice. Lots of controls as well + a good pet.

Cold - plays a bit like storm but with more slows and other debuffs. Sleet + your attacks.

If you're seeing a pattern here, I'd recommend a secondary that have -res and other debuffs. They help a lot more since AR doesn't get the benefit of aim.
    This.

I have an AR/Kin at 50, and I love her to death...and she was a pain in the tuckus to get up there. I'd recommend storm, dark or cold, personally.

    Rad/Traps?

    Depends.

I do have one villain who actually arrests other bad guys. Amusingly, it's my traps. She's not really evil, just a poor tinkerer who has to beg, borrow and steal the parts she needs to do what she loves best--building stuff. If I'm around for GR, she'll be the first to switch sides, most likely.

But all my other villains? Oh yeah. There is none of this namby pamby 'arresting'. I am shooting you with bullets, ice, fire, blasts from the netherworld...I'm not arresting you.
  12. Tiny Bolt

    Rad/Traps?

Janus is actually right, this really is a team friendly build. You can solo, and traps is a VERY safe solo'er once you get PFG and everything else, but it can be slow (set up times, etc).

On a team, it's kinda nice because you can just drop your traps and then blast, because whether or not your teammates take damage is kinda up to them, you can just focus on killing things. ...I mean, "arresting".

    Rad/Traps?

Anything/traps isn't talked about much since they nerfed PT. Still a viable set, sorta, but just not as awesome as it was for a short while. Rad is an alright powerset. Not my favorite blast set, but solid, and I do play it on concept toons.

    Powers you want from traps:
    FFG
    Acid Mortar
    PT (nerfed, but still useful)
Maybe Triage Beacon (depends on your playing style--I toe bomb and find it useful, also can be useful on teams)
Caltrops (useful as a OH NOEZ power)
Seeker Drones (useful for safely toe bombing)
    Trip Mines (zomg awesome)

    Powers you want from rad:
    Neutrino Bolt
    Irradiate
    Aim
    Cosmic Burst
    Neutron Bomb
    Atomic Blast (the nuke)
And, according to a friend of mine who actually likes rad blast--the snipe is awesomesauce on a chocolate chip pancake if you can fit it in.

    Possible pools I would recommend:
Stealth (if you want to get up in their faces while setting up a trap or three)
    Speed (Hasten. Yum)
Flight (Hover if you get the kb cone, makes it kd)

The AoE nature of Irradiate and Neutron Bomb fit nicely with the AoE debuffs of traps. You may even want the cone--Electron Haze--to knock baddies back into the debuff zones, but that's more a personal playstyle type of thing.

The one thing to know about rad blast is it's a fast set--it's low damage because in the time it takes people to fire off one or two attacks from other sets, you're in your fifth or sixth attack. Procs are your friend. It is a clicky set, kinda like kin.

Irradiate will make you happier than it should. And that is good and right, because Irradiate is amazing. If you choose to use Irradiate like it is meant to be used (jumping into the middle of a large mob and using it whenever it recharges, maniacal laughter is optional), you'll probably end up toe bombing a lot.

Fun random fact--both sets are end bar friendly. You can probably go quite a while, or even all 50 levels, with no Stamina if you slot occasional end reducs. That being said, I did a pretend build in Mids just to see how this build would pan out, and I started running out of powers to take if you don't take Stamina.

If you toe bomb (ie, run up and start dropping traps and attacks, rather than pulling like a sane person), PFG is your frieeeend. PFG is your bestest bud. 3 defs, and maybe a end reduc. You don't need recharge.

Triage Beacon is nice if you like playing on the edge, but it doesn't shine til it is six slotted with 3 heals and 3 recharges. Maybe a heal IO set would be good in here, not sure, I haven't IO'd my traps yet.

And you are going to be kinda squishy until PFG. I'd say stick with it until then, then make your decision about whether or not you like it.

And whatever you do...do not take Time Bomb. There is no point to burn a perfectly good respec because you took this power.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head. I'm sure others with more experience will have better/more exact advice.

This, basically, sums up the 'why KB needs to be a responsibly played set' argument. I always cringe inside when I see a KB blast set character go in team chat "Watch this!". Yes, nova is fun. ...not having to rez you, and not having to chase the mob you just blasted into other grouped foes is also fun.

Also, I was on a team (herding, ish) recently. Two tanks and a scrapper. Ice tank, Inv tank, and DA scrapper. One energy blaster who would stand next to the tanks and go boom. And then cone kb everything away from them repeatedly. None of the melee characters were particularly happy with him, since the blaster's defense of his actions were "I have a warning in my bio I have lots of kb". So I got to spend the whole mission I stayed with the team using hurricane to play "no u" with the mobs the blaster was knocking away--I got to be the "wall" that would push the mobs back onto the melee characters, so they had things to heal off of, get +res off of (isn't that how Inv powers work?), slow, terrorize, stun, and get +end...not to mention into my rain patch and whatever AoE debuff the controller was using.

Kept me awake? Yes. Most effective use of anyone's time? No. The blaster went afk for a couple mobs, and we ran through mobs faster without his help than we did with. Annnnnd, no, I was not team lead, and yes, we asked him to stop nova'ing and cone'ing and all that jazz. Evidently team lead didn't want to kick him. *shrug*

tl;dr: Suichiro sums it up well for the most part. I disagree on one opinion--energy blast in itself isn't bad--just the majority of people have no clue how to play it, and its secondary effect makes people want to tear their hair out.

If you were replying to me--I think I was only talking about the -def debuff in rad blasts. It was late enough for me I completely forgot AR was an option within two sentences.

And FS+ AoE is a sweet combination--I got a 50 AR/Kin that works surprisingly well. And my friend does complain he doesn't get to Melt Armor half as much as he wants to . It's still a decent combination (rad/therm). And Sleet+AoE would be great as well--constant -res debuff plus knockdown makes AoE heavy toons veeeery happy.

I agree with the above posters--AR/Therm isn't a good idea. Rad/Therm can be a great combination--a good friend of mine has one at 50 that he likes. Rad/Cold could be pretty good if played right, plus, I'm assuming the -def plus all the other debuffs in cold would stack nicely.

    And Irradiate+Sleet sounds niiiiice.

I actually have seen it used as a way to 'get back' at teams. And I've also seen some really selfish energy blasters, defenders and corrs quite literally kill entire teams because they wanted to nova (usually herding teams, and the brute/tank/scrapper/controller/defender/dom needs the enemies close for whatever power they're using). Yes, it's just a game, so it doesn't bother me too much, but it can be frustrating, especially when the rest of the team is working together to everyone's benefit (especially for AoE heavy teams).

That being said, I've also seen kb used well. Hell, I have over 200 levels on stormies, and I never get complaints about my kb powers (mostly cause I do things like use hurricane to group baddies nicely around whoever volunteered to tank). It really just depends on the players. Unfortunately, bad kb players are MUCH more noticeable than, say, bad rad blast players. So, thanks to a couple (or a lot) of bad experiences, it gets embedded in people's minds that kb=bad, and it's hard to prove that wrong once the idea is implanted.
