  1. Should we put my piece in there or would that be too confusing?
  2. I think the overall problem you're currently having is one of understanding light, which is really the primary thing that you need for drawing.

One particular issue with this image:

Have a look at the shadow behind him. Now find a lightbulb in your house and put your hand between it and a wall.

Imagine the light as a bunch of arrows coming from the holo-projector. (Observe my l33t MSPaint example):

If you put imaginary lines from your lightsource and trace them to the object, you can figure out how the shadows should fall. (This is literally where the term ray-tracing comes from in 3D graphics.) As well, you have to remember that the further you are from a lightsource, the more fuzzy and dispersed a shadow will be.

So, the shadow behind him should be larger than he is, and the part on what I think is a far wall should be more diffused than the part behind his butt on the closer half-wall, and so on, with his arm, ouches, shoulderpads, etc.

You're really doing quite well so far, but I think maybe some of this is more on an unconscious level right now and you need to think it through a bit.

And, of course, things are always more tricky in a fully 3D space like your image, as opposed to mine, which is 2.5D at best.

Wow, there are some people doing some incredible things in vectors.

    Really amazing

Think of it this way: if I give you direction on how to draw a circle, I can do it two ways.
    1) Pick a point. Using a radius of X, draw a line around the fixed point.
    2) Make a grid. Fill in the following boxes: <giant list of dots>

#1 is vectors. It doesn't matter if you're drawing a small circle or a big one, the instructions are the same with only the values changing.

#2 is a bitmap/raster image. I'm telling you specifically where to put dots, and if you're drawing a larger picture, I have to give you a new list.

Most art you see is bitmaps. We paint on a screen and the position and colour of the pixels are stored in the JPG. If I make a large picture, then the file gets bigger.

Vector art is dynamically resizeable because it is created using math (i.e., vectors) instead of bitmaps (i.e., by placing pixels).

There's advantages to both. Typically, it'd wouldn't be feasible to do most of the art you see here in vectors. Ironically, my cel-shaded style is pretty well-suited to it, but I find Illustrator to be a cruel mistress.

Dang, I probably just should've directed you to read this:

If it can view it, it should be able to resize (or crop) and save it.

It's also more efficient than Photoshop in its compression for some reason. (At least that's been my experience).
  7. I haven't met an image filetype that IrfanView won't let me view, even if I (rarely) have to download an additional plugin to do so.

It's free, and ~1.4mb. Worth the risk!

  10. This one is totally rough and unfinished. I don't even really like most of the details, but I was having folks over for a party and didn't finish it.

This is one of my first CoH characters, originally created in the first couple of days after release: Ms. D

Maybe I was talking to Caemgen!

I think it's all interesting, but some of the concepts are outside my level of art education. I have opinions, but they're instinctual and not rationalized to a degree that I feel comfortable with them.

Maybe we need to do Art Theory 101.
  14. Nothing from last night because it's not done yet. Tonight, I may unveil something.

    IF YOU'RE LUCKY.
  15. That's fantastic. You are a mensch.
  16. Why can't we all just get along and enjoy a healthy bowl of noodles? Mmm, noodles.
  17. Considering you still have, what, two weeks to go, that's probably not cause for alarm.
