  1. I feel like I need to speak up about the "artists are better than writers because etc. etc....".

Do comics work without artists? Of course not. Do comics work without writers? Of course not. I don't think that making a broad, general statement that artists are superior to writers, in the comics field, is very valid. Most of the great characters in comics were created by writers, not artists. On the flip side, the one time a bunch of "superstar artists" got together and came up with some original content, the result was the Image line. Love or hate the Image line, it's tough to argue that anything the founding members did was anything other than shallow imitations of characters and stories from the companies they left.
  2. So, I finally bit the bullet and made a female character. I always swore I'd never do it, as I didn't think I could "play" a heroine, at least not well enough to do her justice. But then I was handed a cool name, and I *did* have a powerset combo I wanted to try out...

...and then I thought, "What if Kristen Bell got superpowers and ran around in a variation of Emma Peel's leather outfit?" After recovering from that visual, I made this little lady.

    Moongirl

The ladies seem to be awfully popular with the artists here, so if anyone wants to take a crack at her, that'd be fantastic. I'm quite sure I'll be commissioning some pieces of her, as the thought of a sort've photorealistic Kristen-Bell-in-Emma-Peel-leather picture is just too darn good to not happen.

I saw PinUp Gril and was like hey look it's Pin up Girl!

    I didn't recognize the rest.

  4. Hey, I know that guy! And yup, CC's avatars are some of the coolest uses of that program you'll find. At one point, he posted a sped-up video of how he creates them. That was pretty cool.

Oh, and by the way, Storm, you just gave me another idea that I now have to see done...*grumbles* From Here to Eternity...

Starring Proud Citizen as Burt lancaster, and PinUp Girl as Deborah Kerr
  6. Both great! Creezus, PinUp, you've got enough art to make a calendar for every year From Here To Eternity (...couldn't resist that one, given the South Pacific title).

EDIT: As per Iconsinink's request, here is a link to an earlier thread about his work. It contains some more info, for anyone who may be interested in working with him.

  7. Give it up for a local boy (Albany, NY that is)!

Great stuff, man. I also dig the pulp era, and I really like the feel of what you're doing.
  8. Absolutely shameless bump here.

I've got 4 folks locked down on this thing. The concept has taken a bit of a turn; I've condensed the story to more accurately match the level of interest, and so instead of a bunch of covers, I'll have a bunch of illustrations of key scenes in the story.

Not unlike Gaiman/Vess's "Stardust". But with less cross-dressing pirates.

Folks familiar with these boards may have their interests piqued by the inclusion of Juggertha and Rose_Ice.
  9. Very sweet, I especially like the expression on Lance's face; with an economy of lines, you really nailed "tender".

...or something, I just like it.

Niv: While you're harping on Jay for those boots, could you deliver the following requests? *hands her a bundle of things NPCs have that we don't*
  10. I post mostly in only a few places; Controller threads relating to Fire/Storm, the Virtue Name Watch thread if I've got a couple of good ones I can't use, and now here.

As for why I post here, so far it's just been to drum up some commissions/commission ideas for this one project. But I'm sure I'll solicit more work via this board and DA.

    Speaking of which.../e CocksEyebrowAtJuggs
  11. So far so good. I've locked down 3 out of 8 artists, and have feelers out to a couple more. Thanks to everyone who's expressed an interest thus far. This whole project's moving along quicker than I'd anticipated; I'd best get cracking on the prose!

Ahh kk, here's a 20 minute freebie, good luck with your project...

Thank ya's, but now I see from where your confusion came about. The 1st commissioned piece (the color one) is Storm Devil, a different character. The head shot is Baron.

But it's fun to pretend that Baron Devil (Storm Midnight?) exists in that wacky Amalgam universe!

I'm a little confused by the freebie and the first commission, is the head piece, a skull mask? or a cowl like batman/wolverine/daredevil? Check out my gallery and if YOUR interested contact me at DA.

Could you post a screen, list a short bio (AT, powersets) and perhaps a 1-2 synopsis of the 8 issues? Is one an origin issue? Okay those are MY questions, good luck either way... in case you don't pick me.

The freebie was one of a number of penciled headshots of various members of our Virtue Supergroup, the Guardians of the Golden Age. The artist went off my (at the time, clumsy) description of the Baron, which accounts for the presence of the ear. It's neither a hood, mask, or cowl; it's the aspect the character takes on when "fighting evil"...sorta like the way Jim Corrigan (or Crispus Attucks) turns into the Spectre.

The entire series is an origin story...yeah, I like words. And grandiose displays of hubris. Oh, check it out, my navel...hmmm....

    Oh, sorry.

As far as synopses of the individual issues, I'd like to handle that via PMs with the artists; I don't want to give too much away. I should also say that, with permission, I'll be posting the finished works here in this forum, so folks can get an eyeful.

Thanks for the tips, and you're right, I should have posted a screenie. Here are a few. Sorry for their quality, I tend to be rubbish at getting good screenshots of my own characters.
    Baron, full detail

Back detail; emphasis on frayed cape hem
3/4 front view head shot; Creepy Eyes (tm)
  14. An addendum...apologies in advance if I've clumsily and obliviously breached Commission Request etiquette; I'm something of a lurker here in this forum, and I'm not entirely familiar with the customs. The only piece I've commissioned thus far was handled entirely through ingame and website messaging, so I may have inadvertently violated a rule or two.

If that's the case, please know that wasn't at all my intention, and feel free to chide me into the appropriate method.
  15. OK. This is a bit of an ambitious project. I'll do my best to outline it plainly and resist my innate rambling.

Recently, my "other main" (I can't bring myself to call him an alt), Baron Midnight, hit the level 50 mark. I'm going to be cross-posting Baron Midnight's origin, heretofore unknown even to his Supergroup teammates, on our GuildPortal site (gotga.guildportal.com) as well as the Roleplaying and/or Virtue boards here. The story will be told as a "miniseries", comprised of eight (8) "issues". I would very much like it if each "issue" was accompanied by "cover art", i.e., a finished piece which would leap out at you if you happened by it in a comic book store.

I've already been in contact with one artist, and would like them to create the cover for the first "issue". They created my first commission piece , and also hooked me up with this freebie of Baron Midnight himself.

If anyone is interested in participating in this project, please let me know within this thread. From there, we can hammer out the details via PMs.

Thanks in advance, and I hope this interests some folks!
  16. Double XP, that time of year when a young man's thoughts turn to Freakshow farms...

Here's a spot to post Screenshots of any of your characters' final level-ups. I'll start; here is

    how much does he charge

    [/ QUOTE ]

That there is a question that I'm sure the artist would like to tackle himself. As per usual, prices vary depending on the kind of illustration commissioned. And I got a very good deal; feeding the man names for the past 3 months (Sentient, Sojourner, Powerlord, Silver Centurion...) paid off pretty darn well.
  18. Ha, no, no finder's fee for me. I'll have to ask him if he has a DeviantArt page; I know he was setting up his own site, I just can't recall the name of it. He actually doesn't come to the boards ever, as ingame he's mostly a big-time RPer, but I'll definitely prod him over here so he can check out the kudos you kind folks have sent his way.
  19. Hey, an illustration done not by me, but a friend of mine. Posted with permission, here's my character Storm Devil.

If anyone likes it, please post a reply; you know how artists and their egoes are! And if anyone likes it enough to want to commission a piece from the artist, PM me here on the boards or ingame (@Stat), and I'll try to hook you up.
  20. Five servers down simultaneously. Good times.

EDIT: ...for all of two minutes...I know, I know, "whine moar"...

    Dirty Devs!

Ha...there's actually a story behind that. I'll repeat it, even though it may just be an urban legend of sorts.

The Little Mermaid was the last flick Disney made without any real computer effects of which to speak. Accordingly, they were getting rid of a decent amount of their animators. Supposedly, some of said animators had as their last gig the Little Mermaid poster video box art. Needless to say, they weren't happy.
  22. Well done, thanks a ton. I, as I'm sure many others are, am all about rolling up a Sonic/Sonic now that my long-suffering friends can team with one.
  23. Hey Eldandil...firstly, thanks a ton for this guide, it's helped me a lot in bringing up my Fire/Storm/(soon to be Fire due to double xp). I do have one question and one observation.

Q: Not to bring up the FF+TC thing again, but...I have yet to see this effect a boss, and I've tried it a lot, against all sorts of mobs. Have bosses possibly seen an increase in their mez resistance?

O: You stated that Hot Feet is only a rated power for Hovering trollers, due to the fact that it doesn't effect mobs when you, um, Hover. That's actually not been my experience. While it's true you can't activate the power if you're Hovering (or Flying, etc.), the damage (not sure about the Slow or semi-Fear) seems to still apply. I typically turn on Steamy Mist and Hot Feet just before entering a mission, then detoggle HF as necessary, and retoggle between groups.

Any feedback you've got would be greatly appreciated, and again, thanks a lot for this guide!

Edit: Oh, and grats on 50!
