Quote:Looks like Hal's, er.... compensating.[LEFT]
Given more to work with today.
Green Lantern with Gatling guns? Movie tie-in anybody?
Flash suit tweaks are minor. Looks like the symbol on his chest is more of a solid, raised emblem thing than just fabric of the suit like we have had previously.
Batman costume looks to be minor tweaks, as someone else said. A more solid looking glove. And what looks to be a bit of a utility belt redesign. Possibly a bit more solid cowl, as well.
Cyborg looks good. Not fond of the extra metal around his chin and cheekbones, however.
Wonder Woman looks to have the full leggings. I wont say thats bad, but I wont say its good either. Still cannot tell if they are supposed to be black or dark blue. -
Quote:Just say no to thread necromancy. Can't sleep.
But... I do really agree with this thread and think it needs more attention.
In fact, it should be stickied.
I love stories, I love roleplaying, but I have barely used AE because:
1) BIG. 1. The interface is just so horrible. It's like picking shards of glass out of your skin trying to find anything good in all the boring and plain cheesy/fanfiction-style missions. The rating system is COMPLETELY useless and should not be the focus. Britney spears and eminem are 'popular', too. Give us a way to browse through bio descriptions quicker and easier and make the list of tags used actually viewable as a list to browse through:
http://www.last.fm/forum/5/_/542521/1
Also there needs to be a web interface for finding stories, to make it much more readable and easy to browse. Link it in with a subforum on here maybe so new stuff gets their own thread made automatically!
2) Need base editor type creation in missions, at the moment all missions are just variants of missions I have seen before just with different text/enemies...
Not the kind of stuff non-grindy people wanna look at really. A few times is enough... -

Quote:I never said that you would "throw a new pricing model out there just to do it."Pricing is the number one thing you think about when running a business. It's based on costs, overhead, sales and other factors. If your changing your pricing, either your costs are going down so much you can lower your prices(Wal-mart) or you got caught by something unexpected that forced you to raise them(Public Transit/Shipping/gas). You don't just throw a new pricing model out there just to do it.
I would instead suggest that you familiarize yourself with the concept of the loss leader. The PS3 works as a present-day example. -
Quote:The only MMO with any sort of appreciable pricing power is the 800 pound gorilla. Until and unless they change their pricing for monthly subscription games, you won't see an industry-wide change in subscription fees for MMOs.Have you ever heard the terms, "Pricing Power" or "Sustainable Pricing?" I say this because the smart people don't experiment with pricing because it can destroy your businesss. Businesss is not as flexible as you may think(Large Companies). You can destroy profitability of whole industries if you don't stay on top of this. This is why large companies eat other companies regularly to keep pricing power strong. F2P is a risk venture.

Quote:You're stating your preferences as fact without evidence to back it up.I won't give you winning lottery numbers but I will say this:
A profitable business model is stable. It doesn't change on a fad. A company changes it methods only when the current model doesn't work.
The model they have is working and doesn't need to be changed currently. If you can't come up with $14.99 you need to get....
You should feel free to do that, but until you can show evidence that it doesn't work, I'm pretty much free to call you on it. -
Quote:Your predictive skills are amazing.F2P won't work here because we're too smart. Most of us know this about F2P and will move as soon as they try it...unless it's a whole new game from the ground up!!
Can I have some winning lottery numbers while you're at it? -
Note that the CDC is conspicuously not mentioning their elite team of biohazard-suited anti-zombie commandos. That's a shame, because I sleep better at night knowing that orange-clad zombie-slaying ninja exist and are employed by my government.
Just in case. -
My favorite story of the TV season was with Fox pulling a highly-promoted series after only two episodes.
They gave it a strong lead-in off of House, MD, and put huge resources into making it their new big hit. Hell, I even heard an interview promoting it on NPR.
It was a show about a con man going legit, and his dad trying to keep him in the business, and I doubt anyone here remembers the name of it without looking it up.
I'm not going to get sucked into any more long-form television series like Heroes any more. If I hear that a show is that good, I'll wait for the DVD. I've been suckered too many times by shows with intriguing premises and poor execution. -
Quote:I think what Durakken may be referring to is that several of the books on Norse myth I've read have specifically made Ragnarok a transition to the new Christian world. After Ragnarok's over, there's only an Adam and Eve type left and it goes from there.Depending on where you go, there are still crossovers between more native beliefs and creativity. Looking into history, things like the Virgin of Guadalupe are a little... fishy (as in being a local belief having a lot of hold with Christians in the area).
There have also been Christians that have been rather taken with ideas in Norse myth (the writer or editor of Beowulf, CS Lewis, and Tolkien among them), but no, Christian beliefs are not merged with Norse beliefs. Not sure where Durakken is getting that from, but I have never heard it in any Protestant or Catholic writings. At all. In the cases of the above people, they actually struggled with how intrigued they were by Norse beliefs, since much of them did not sync up with Christianity.
Not even sure what to do with this line, either. "Most people don't believe 99% of what the canon of their religion says." If you don't believe in 99% of a religion, you're not a part of it. Going by that, I must be a hardcore Jew, Muslim, Buddhist, etc. Heck, I could even believe in Norse or Greek myth. 99% means you hardly agree with anything the religion stands for.
Anyway, I do think Norse myth is quite interesting. It's strikingly different from a lot of other mythologies, and I always found the idea of Ragnarok to be startling in contrast with Greek myths. I'm hoping to check out the movie this week, if work can stop getting in the way of things.
Now, I haven't done any major research on the subject in terms of primary sources, but I'd be willing to believe that addition was made to ease the transition to Christianity for the Norse, much the same way that Brigid was made a saint by the Catholic church.
Of course, that just means that Norse myth was made somewhat compatible with Christianity, not that it was integrated into Christian 'canon.' Durakken is just overstating his case and not backing off from his original statement. It's par for the course. -
Quote:My rule of thumb is this: The only time that race should be considered when casting a film is if racial themes (Discrimination, Jim Crow, ethnic clashes, etc.) are core to the film. Note that I say considered - this is not carte blanche to discriminate in casting, and I would love to see a film about race with truly race-blind casting (i.e. you have to infer what race the character is supposed to be based solely on how other characters treat them). So, you were fine with The Last Airbender, Dragonball Evolution and the upcoming Akira all featuring white leads?
"A racist clock is right twice a day." - Penny Arcade
(Just an FYI, I don't care that he's black, but I recognise this is a double standard at the same time)
So, for the Last Airbender and Dragonball (neither of which I saw), I don't see a problem with that casting per se, UNLESS there was a studio directive to cast a white lead over an Asian one for purposes of marketing (i.e. someone with money said that an Asian lead couldn't put butts into seats.) I'm not privy to those behind the scenes discussions, but I'm willing to bet that was the case because I know Hollywood's penchant for whitewashing. And I'm sure that the idea of using black or Latino leads never crossed their minds. The movies are not about race, so race-blind casting would be perfect for them, but I don't trust Hollywood to have actually made those casting choices in a progressive way, basing their picks on the people who could act the role and pull off the physicality of it well.
TLR - the race of the characters was probably changed not because Hollywood chose the best actors, but because of beliefs about the marketability of those films based in racism.
There's much more to it than just that, but that's wandering quite far afield, and beyond the scope of this board.
From what I hear, Idris Elba filled the role well, acting the part and inhabiting the role physically. What more can you ask for?
Also - I'm waiting for Conan to come out so we can all have this same damn discussion over again. -
Quote:I want you to think very carefully about this. Not at all it just doesn't work canon wise, mythology wise or logically. Could you take a film seriously where Hitler was played by Wesley Snipes, or if Jet Li played Malcolm X or maybe we could get Ryan Renolds to play Genghis Kahn.
I say its not racism because this is the internet and I am bound to get people who want to jump on the politically correct bandwagon and miss the point of my post. So I have thought it over and I still feel that way. I just think it was a stupid job casting. If we are going to disregard historical accuracy regarding race why not do it regarding gender too. We could get Bruce Willis to play Wonder Woman or better yet we could have Megan Fox to play the Martian Manhunter.
Bad casting is bad.
You are saying a black man can't do a job (actor) because of the color of his skin.
I don't particularly care how you dress up you statements beyond that point. -

Quote:The fail in this post is strong.Which explains the popularity of Supernatural, I guess. I have an RPG group with a female GM who freely admits that the only reason she - and apparently legions of women of her age - watches the show is for the cute leads. In fact, give her (and the legions) a show with crappy writing and semi decent acting, but have cute male leads and she'll (and they) be tuning in each week. And then they all go write slash fic about the show.

I've not read much Pratchett.
I've not read anything by Gaiman I didn't like. Neverwhere is probably my favorite, though it's not his strongest work. And Sandman, in totality, is simply an amazing thing that you do yourself a favor to read. -
Quote:I'd never gotten into Buffy and Angel at all. (People who knew me at the time kept telling me it was something I would have loved, but I've never been hugely TV oriented.) When Firefly came out, my only exposure to it was the ads that ran while I was watching 24 (the first season of which was great TV, but after that...)As a moderate fan of Buffy and a huge fan of Angel, I was anticipating Firefly. The first episode they showed was the train robbery one, which was not nearly as good as the pilot, an episode that is almost perfectly plotted with the character reveals timed to an amazing degree. That said, the train robbery wasn't a terrible episode, it was just lackluster. Come to find out that they had literally written it over a weekend when Fox said they weren't going to show the pilot first, and it's impressive that the thing is watchable at all.
Fox seemed to offer a mea culpa by allowing Dollhouse to run past its natural expiration date (and by Fox's standards, allowing it to run past episode 3 was a major admission of guilt), and they certainly gave Human Target a fair shake despite its middling ratings, but this year they've reverted to their usual practice of letting a show go after it fails to be an immediate hit.
The ads that Fox ran tried too hard - they were emphasizing that it was sexy sexy sexy, and fast paced... and the practical upshot was that they made Firefly look like an Asylum production. I even remarked to my brother at that time how bad it looked.
I actually watched Firefly on DVD around the time Serenity came out - I saw Serenity first, being hauled by Firefly fans to see it opening weekend. And I do in fact get upset by how poorly Fox treated it.
Dollhouse, of course, was a clear case of Whedon's original vision being compromised for the sake of Fox, who mistreated the show anyway. The difference was, it wasn't nearly as good. -
Quote:Ryan Reynolds would have been a great Wally West. Hal Jordan? Not so much. What GL doesn't have going for it, like Thor, is a chunk of the movie in CGI land with lots of CGI critters. If the weak part for Thor was Asgard, not sure how the Oa scenes will be received by the critics.
As for Ryan Reynolds, I think the Hollywood group think was;
A) Test pilots are cocky bastards.
B) Think of an actor who plays cocky bastards that looks like he can fit in a fighter jet and still looks good in spandex (which thankfully eliminated Seth Rogen).
C) Won't cost a lot if the movie does well enough for sequels. -
I'd suggest invuln or shields for a primary. For a secondary, anything but energy melee; ice melee is pretty underwhelming to me as well. Willpower's not a bad choice, but not my first choice.
-
I actually fell into the game by accident - a friend of mine bought the game and discovered his computer was insufficiently beefy to run it. Since the idea vaguely appealed to me (and the concept of KGB Special Section 8 was hashed out at my gaming table before launch), I figured I'd play it for the free month, because there was no way I was going to pay to play a game.
Still here, 7 years later.
Why I like this game over others? Because a dwarf fighter is a dwarf fighter, and you can't really fluff it too many ways. But an invuln/fire tanker can be a psychic mutant, a Soviet power-armor soldier, a djinn, or a magic tiger-girl. The story is open enough that you can make a comic book character with whatever background you want, and it will probably mesh fairly well with the established game. I never got the feeling that was the case in any other MMO out there - their story was more important than your story.
I also love that you can make your character look like the thing they're supposed to be at level 1, walking into Outbreak, instead of washing up on the shore of an island in rags and killing rats with a dagger. If I want to make a fire-slinging wizard or sword-swinging barbarian in CoH, I can have my high collared, many-colored robes and special red-bladed sword to start with. Or I can make an energy-blasting robot instead. I don't have to level up to look super-cool.
So, in essence, the design team of CoH said that my concept for a hero or villain is more important than their overall aesthetic, and I'm comfortable with that. I've had more problems when I tried out other MMOs, because my vision can't be replicated near as well. -
Quote:I'd heard of Firefly, but I didn't watch it when it came out because not only did Fox move it around, their promotional material was horrible and it looked like something I would hate.I don't think I had ever heard of Firefly until it was off the air, and when you look at the airdates for the episodes, it's no surprise the thing was canceled. Things were shown out of order and not on the same day of the week, and with that show, some of the episodes should be seen in order to appreciate them more (and heck, that's the same for most shows that are good).
I'd be fine with the "Reality" TV hell of the summer if we actually had regular shows consistent during the rest of the year. No mid-season breaks, no shuffling around... give a show an honest chance and then dump it. Even if you only gave it half a season in the first place, let those 12 or so eps run at a consistent time. -

The one I liked best had the addition of an Xbox controller in the president's hands.

Darn, I liked watching Lie to Me when I caught it.
Of course, stuff like this is the reason the only Fox show I watch is the sacred cow that they won't slaughter...
No, not that show. I'm talking about House.
