Ok...maybe someone like Arcanaville can explain this better.
I've never been a fan of defense sets. Mostly because anything remotely based on 'luck' generally means it will fail for me. But even I am kind of appalled at how quickly and easily I died in this situation.
Was doing a tip mission with my level 22 SS/SR brute Parity.
Now I have Focused Fighting and Focused Senses each 4 slotted with two 25 common defense IOs and a 20 common defense IO as well as a single 20 end reduction IO. That's 21.04% to melee and ranged.
Then I have both Agile and Dodge two slotted with a 25 and 20 common defense IO for 7.57% to melee and ranged.
I have evasion only slotted with a single end reducer so it is at its base of 13.88%.
Ok...I do a tip mission and engage a +1 slag golem boss and a minion. I hit rage and dispatch the minion first. Then I start in on the boss. And it is just hit after hit after hit on me like I have no defense at all. Ironically...his AoE attack missed. But every melee just landed before I could even get him down to 1/3 of his health.
Now I had a small and medium green and used them both over the course of this fight but he just kept hitting. I know I have lousy luck...but that was insane. Is that level of defense simply inadequate for fighting +1 bosses? Even my elec/elec never got taken out quite so fast by a slag golem boss at 22. I felt like wet tissue paper.
And that's not the first time I have gotten beat down due to insane hits time after time. What level of defense is even considered adequate in a situation like that? -
Quote:Yeah, arrogance eventually leads to you eating a large helping of shut-up-because-you-look-stupid pie. Thanks that was a great read, lovely to see him dig such a hole for himself. I just wish he would shut the hell up about CoH, associating this with Cryptic is bad for business. I like how he has already written off both their other games. To see CoH still be so successful must be so infuriating for him.

Quote:You will not be able to import your toons to a COH2. This would make no sense from a dev perspective. At the most you'd be able to import your character's look, and even that would depend on how close the the costume creators are in the two games. I suspect that they would be very different. As long as it s a revamp from ground up of COX where we can still play our old toons even if they have to be ported over. Or the result will be another split in the player base.
This was covered in another thread already with Arcanaville saying the same thing. If that was the case, it would not be COX 2...it would simply be an expansion of COX.
Also, if they are making a COX 2...they'd want a brand new playerbase anyway. Not that they would mind if you played both games...but they'd be looking to generate a new base of players. -
What Chase_Arcanum said!
And really...you think they shouldn't concentrate on new players?
That's exactly what this game needs! Vets slowly go away. Boredom, new games, family responsibilities. I think they need to do even more to attract new players and revamp the other 2 starting zones.
Praetoria content is damn interesting compared to lots of the other COX content out there. And it actually makes me feel like I'm the one in control of the story rather than just some glorified, hired muscle.
And I'm sorry that some people can't stand pre-stamina levels. But stamina is not a requirement for an effective toon.
The whole point of GR seems(from what I observe) to make the game interesting from level 1. That should be a huge deal to more MMO developers. Giving players a good starting experience, rather than making people slog through bad content until they get high enough for the 'good' stuff. I think this is a very good approach. -

Quote:Exactly. That is both true and false at the same time. One reason is because human beings are willing to sacrifice a lot of freedoms if they are convinced that someone like Cole and his followers are the lesser of two evils. Another reason (To steal something from Jim Butcher) is because humans have a habit of ignoring bad things that don't happen where they can see them. Those loud pops you hear at night are a car backfiring, not gunshots. Or ask a big city cop how many times he's been to a crime scene in a busy street and yet nobody saw anything.
In fact, I'd say the tenacity, and elasticity, of the human spirit allows us to live in some of the most horrible environments imaginable without much change.
If you look at some of the practices of certain ancient civilizations and tribes, you'd be surprised to see how much people tolerated because they thought it was perfectly OK.
The truth is that we have no idea how much humans can tolerate because it simply cannot be easily measured. -

Maybe this is the case, but I have no idea how I'm surviving the game so far when playing a stalker and a dominator then. Those should definitely not be able to take the punishment that Praetoria is dishing out.

So far,
I'm still at the same opinion point. The mission difficulty isn't overall that bad...but there are a few missions that have some definite spawn placement issues. As well as some missions where ambushes wear on maybe one or two spawns pass what's necessary to get the point across.
There is one mission in Flores' arc where it seems like 3 separate spawns share the same aggro field. That needs to be fixed. I had to run 3 times...but then the rest of the mission was fine.
It's also quite possible that some of the vets complaining are so ingrained in their ways, that any adjustment feels like pulling a tooth. People are probably still building toons in ways that gimp them early on. Maybe too many pool powers taken etc. I don't know.
I'm playing 2 squishy toons and having a blast. -
Did this really need to happen? It's not like bots were ever powerhouse damage dealers in the first place. The assault bot's second upgrades are what makes bots tolerable past 32.
Does it really need tweaking down? -
Quote:What's really funny is how much of a hypocrite she actually is.So here we are; everyone has been chased away, the world is safe from the evils of opinions not her own, and the moral fiber of the world is safe and sound and colored in Gold. Of course I have no idea how she justifies her actions and the notions that she's right and we're wrong and how we should all just shut up and get behind her. Insane Troll Logic probably
If she really believes all the crap she's spewing, then the fact that she praises the devs on their work and continues to monetarily support a game which makes it easier and easier to cross the line to gray areas and outright evil, means that she has about as much true conviction as a hamster. Guess who creates the evil content you hate so much!!
And even if she actually 'won', what would that mean? If we all up and followed her way of thinking then we happily leave half the content of the game unplayed and unexperienced(not a word)? Just because we made the 'right' choice in terms of playstyle?
How many great games would I not have been able to play if had that philosophy? Let's see...Prototype, Dungeon Keeper, Darksiders(coming out for PC soon!), no Warhammer 40K games at all! Far Cry 2, Jedi Outcast, Hitman, Overlord.
I mean, what is the overall point? I'm all for threads discussing how morality choices affect the gameplay experience, but I don't need each of those threads to be constantly hijacked by stupid one liners and winkies. If she actually had a point to make and discuss that would be one thing. But all the rest is just silly hot air. -
Quote:I have to agree here.To be honest, one thing most MMOs miss, I believe, is a feeling of closure. While endless progression has its merit, I still firmly believe that all good things MUST come to an end, because the longer you drag a good thing past its prime, the less good it becomes. I enjoy that, in City of Heroes, I can hit level 50 and feel like I'm DONE. That doesn't mean I'll never play the character again, but it means my character is now complete and I can finally use all that power that I've been accumulating over the character's life span without feeling like I could be adding something more.
In some way, the Incarnate system will ruin this completely, but in another way, that too has an end at some point.
I'll expand on this from my POV to say that maybe it's because I play such a wide variety of games from other genres, but I find myself more invested in the game experience than in my character exclusively. A lot of MMOs are not about crafting a compelling experience, they are instead about making you attached to one character and then adding more levels and things to do for the character in an infinite loop. You churn your way to max level and then wait for the 'fun' to start.
If any other game but an MMO were built this way, it would fail. It's precisely because COX does not work this way, that makes it such a gem to me. Despite all the talk of being useless until you get stamina and all the other cliche things you hear on the boards, the game gives a compelling experience from the get go in comparison to other MMOs. With GR, they have upped that to a whole other level.
I can enjoy the setting, story and immersion of an interesting new world, while still getting my fill of all the other stuff that I'm used to in COX. In that sense, it doesn't matter if I'm playing a max level character, the fun wouldn't be that much more enhanced if I were.
Now I understand that different aspects of a game appeal more strongly to different people, but there are so many MMOs out there that all offer the same thing, I don't think COX needs to follow them to the letter when it has demonstrated that it doesn't need to in order to be a great game.
If most people that play the game tend to fall into the altaholic category, then looking to expand that aspect first and foremost seems to be the smart thing to do, and then build from there. -
You are so caught up in a weird, freakish fog of your own making that it's really quite nauseating.
Here's a news flash: People have different views. I know it must be tough to have to face the fact that, every day, you are in a world filled with other humans who don't give a whit about why you think your take on a given situation is the only way to look at things.
Could you please, for a single moment, stop trying to lead a moral crusade in a freaking video game? Do you realize how stupid and childish that actually is?
I mean seriously...winkies aside for once, get a grip! -
Ok...no more issues with my dominator so far.
My stalked, on the other hand, had an interesting time with the Cleopatra storyline. (Spoilers Ahead!)
The morality missions where she sets you up to get chomped by the Resistance was frustrating due to ambushes. Now it's not that I disliked the ambushes exactly, its that playing a stalker and having mobs know where you are and able to shoot you even when hid kind of puts the AT at a disadvantage that other ATs would not have been facing.
If I can't hide, I can't use my assassin strike or get criticals when I attack from a hidden state.
The other odd thing was that even with ninja reflexes, I was hit by their melee attacks far too often. Maybe my luck is lousy(and I admit that it is), but their accuracy has got to be darn good for a +0 minion to hit almost every time when I have 15% Melee defense.
Anyway, apart from that, it wasn't a 'terrible' experience. If I was playing my dom or blaster I think I'd still have come out alright. Even if only because I paid attention to the mission text and took along a full inspiration tray expecting the worst.
At this point I'm still inclined to say that it's still not so bad as to scare off new players. -
Quote:None for me either. I'll continue to give ongoing reports as I level. My experience is markedly different to yours. I'm not experiencing any undue End difficulties on a variety of toons in Prey
It's not a problem.
I have to say that considering that I'm playing one of the squishiest ATs in the game, and doing OK so far, I'm curious as to how fast the difficulty ramps up to experience things like folks here are talking about. It's got to be a significant spike.
Also...which mob group saps end? I'd like to be prepared. -
Well pretty much level 10 with my elec/elec dom and no problems to speak of.
I've come across some 4 man spawns(or so it seemed) but I handled them pretty well. Only used inspirations for a few end fights and one of them I used 2 lucks needlessly.
I've fought everything but Seers. So I don't know if that's where the problems are. But so far...so good.
If there are specific problems with certain missions, then that's one thing...but to say that it is overall too hard for new players is probably not entirely accurate. At least that's been my experience so far. -

Quote:You're really hopeful and I admire that. Considering how long this has been going on though...you think they are going to fix it?Sam, you are a fine poster and a worthwhile read, which is all the more impressive given that English (which is difficult to learn and a harsh mistress thereafter!) is not your native tongue.
I agree with you. No, it is not game-shattering and we are not leaving. It is just tough to follow a lot of the time, which is a shame, because we can miss out on some good dialogue. Especially irksome with authors like Troy Hickman, when you really want to read what they wrote.
Hopefully, this will get fixed.
What would need to happen is an entirely new method of delivering NPC dialogue in missions.
I honestly hate having to scroll through my chat logs to find dialogue that should have been helping to create a great moment for me in the game and then have to rearrange it in my head. I just don't think that an easy fix is forthcoming.
So far I really like being able to talk to an NPC and then have it turn hostile where appropriate. That works well in some of the Praetorian missions. Unfortunately it can't be applied to every situation.
Short of the game creating a 'pause state' every time you approach a dialogue-heavy spawn and then methodically having each mob say their piece before resuming normal game functions...I'm not sure how they could make it very much better. Even if they manage to get the order right each time, its still too much to process when a fight starts 3 seconds after it triggers. -
Quote:Hmmm...I'll be able to give some more accurate feedback once I play my dom a bit more. I'm curious as to how hard things get.Solo.
I play pretty much the same way as you, but in Praetoria it doesn't much matter if you're a squishy soloing. For example, it's not uncommon for a single destroyer spawn when solo to have 4 mobs, 3 of them the ones that sling dynamite (sorry I'm tired and can't recall their proper name right now). How exactly is a squishy supposed to deal (at level 10) with multiple burn patches, explosions, and KB? Inspirations aren't the answer, because their supply is finite. And I would argue that needing inspirations to finish the majority of the spawns is indicative of a problem. -
Quote:Are we talking teaming or solo here where the biggest problems are?1-5? No.
After that? Yes.
I keep seeing people say things like, "well what you need to do is pull right, use LOS, use Hover blasting." Honestly the lowbie levels shouldn't be that hard, and they aren't in the other two 1-20 areas of the game.
Every single spawn shouldn't be a life or death struggle.
I have a level 11 brute that teamed for most of his life and have not had a very bad time of things.
I suppose I'll let you know how my elec/elec dom works out once he gets a bit higher. And my ninja blade/ninjitsu stalker.
Although it may just be my playstyle. I approach each spawn on its own merit and consider who to hit first and the best way to take them down. I've always played like that. I never rush into anything...even when playing brutes, I carefully choose where to strike first. -
Quote:The newbies have more info available now than when I started the game. And I started with a squishy elec/elec blaster and did a lot of soloing. You need to take off the veteran glasses for a sec, and see how a newbie may play it. They may not know when to pull, they may open with an AoE (pulling multiple mobs), they may horde inspirations not knowing when the next set will drop. Also, consider that they may pick a squishy as a starting AT.
Some mob types would be extremely difficult under that scenario. In particular, the Syndicate and the Destroyers.
I'd say Praetoria is probably more forgiving than a lot of other MMOs are. Well except maybe for WoW...and I'm sure we'd all want the game to be more like that.
You want to know where I think they could improve things? Better descriptions of what mobs do when you click on the info link. Including some hints at what they are weak and strong against in terms of damage types and possibly what range they prefer to engage their targets at(oh wait...ALL mobs are now melee specialists...even those with practically no melee attacks).
Even if you want to hold info back until a player has engaged a few mobs and then update the descriptions, that would be nice. I like games that keep a 'bestiary' of sorts that I can consult to see what makes a particular type of enemy tick and what doesn't. It's time to have an updateable encyclopedia in the game that players can consult about lore and NPC groups.
Other than that, I'm not sure they need to make the starting game more trivial. -
Quote:Seriously? The starting levels seem that hard? I just don't see it...I agree. If I'm not mistaken trial accounts are now forced to start in Praetoria. In light of that making the content more challenging than the original lowbie zones makes no sense at all to me.
Out of curiosity, did the Devs ever respond to these observations in beta? I'm curious as to what their stance is, because frankly I'm having trouble understanding how they thought it was a good idea.
