Sorry to see you go, Beastyle, you'll be missed, but happy trails wherever you end up.
I still remember you dropping in on the roleplaying crowd at Galaxy Girl on Union just before she (and the rest of Galaxy City) got blown to kingdom come. See you around. -
Quote:Sorry, ZM, you got Keppler wrong - the "circles within circles" was Copernicus, I believe - Keppler made no attempt to explain the mechanism of gravity, but mathematically described (accurately, except for Mercury due to relativistic effects) the motion of the planets around the Sun as ellipses. I memorised Keppler's 3 laws years ago.Bah! It's like Kepler all over again with his circles within circles. We need a Newton of Ponytails, followed by an Einstein of Ponytails, followed by the Einstein of Ponytails disowning his elasticity constant only to have the Standard Model show he was right and put it back in.
*Then* we can have animated hair that doesn't go into the uncanny valley. -
One thing that some people might be forgetting is that the design philosophy that Zwill explained earlier is really only going to be true for the Retro Sci Fi pack and any subsequent ones - everything that comes out before then will have had at least SOME of the choices made under the "old" philosophy of giving phenotype-specific pieces any which way - including the gender-specific Carnie pack.
I would caution some restraint on expressing extremes of concern until the first few packs under the new philosophy have released, since we won't really see the impact until then. -
Some people's math seems to be slightly off when talking about "development time" on future cossie options.
What has happened in the past is M/H get A and F get B. Total development time of A+B.
What is happening now is M/H/F get C and F get D, where C+D = A+B.
Now, C>A (in terms of time), which means that D<B, meaning that M/H are getting more development time on their costumes, and F are getting less time spent on the unique female pieces.
I fail to see a problem with more development time being spent on costume pieces that everyone can use.
Oh, and Dink? You're awesome. Thank you for finding the time to do this. -
Quote:Thanks, Bosstone, you just managed to galvanise my thought processes.DV, do you understand the concept of 'consent-based RP'? What you're seeing here is people not consenting to your RP. And you can't do a thing about it.
This is what it boils down to.
Whether it's within the rules of the game or not is completely beside the point. I don't care one jot if the GMs allow players to use canon characters for toons. The problem is "do other RPers I interact with consent to agree that I am playing a canon character?" - because if they don't, there's no point playing them. And the overwhelming response here has been "no".
This is not to say that tying a character to lore is wrong, not by a long shot. It's to do with confidence about whether the use of an established character (even one only lightly covered in the game) will be a true representation of that character that the developers would accept as canonical.
Unless you can 100% guarantee that the developers will never utterly invalidate every single bit of RP between your character and mine, I do not accept your right to roleplay as a canon character. I do not consent to agreeing that your characterisation will be considered canonical.
That's what I meant earlier about "your group that allow...": if some people do consent to this, that's fine. But don't fall into the trap of believing that everyone automatically agrees, just because you have the character's name and bio written perfectly. Clearly they don't.
To borrow a phrase my mother likes to use: If one man calls you a [donkey], take no notice. If three men call you a [donkey], buy a saddle. -
You heard it here, folks. Lightsaber combat is ONLY for the protection of Jews.

Quote:Of course he does. But it's not Virtue, so it's inherently inferior (attack against every person who roleplays on any server that's not Virtue, making demeaning comments to everyone that roleplays on any server that's not Virtue), and anyone who roleplays there is there for the sole purpose of being ignored by everyone else on the server (promoting hatred and making demeaning comments). You do know that, before the Server Merges, Union was the RP server for Europe?
Oh, and then there's the comment that people who ignore lore are the worst of the godmodders, completely missing the point that nobody here has said that they ignore canon lore - he's making unsubstantiated assumptions on the basis of no evidence. Which is kinda rude. -
CB, we haven't agreed on much over the years, but in this, I am merrily holding your coat.
-
Quote:^this. You can go to hell right now. In fact, no, you can stay on Virtue and stay the hell away from Union. I pity the poor sods who have to put up with you and your utter insanity. But I can guarantee you are not welcome on Union.
You, simply put, do not understand RP, the concept of what is canon and what is player created and what 'god modding' really means.
To be so arrogant as to assume that all others who do not agree with you are somehow "inferior" tells me that I have zero interest in EVER interacting with that person on a roleplaying level.
Please, stay away from Union, where we like to see people play original characters. We don't care how memorable they are, because we're not in some sort of competition to be "better". -
I'm afraid you've failed on a number of levels.
One, actually the TOS merely allow PS to use my characters without express permission, even if my characters are used in other copyrighted works.
Two, of COURSE this is all my own opinion, based on upwards of twenty-five years of roleplaying. That, by the way, is called "experience". I've seen pretty much every kind of RP there is to see, and you know what? Playing someone else's creations bore the majority of roleplayers. Anecdotal, sure. But no more than you claiming that almost everyone you've roleplayed with is fine with you dictating their characters to them.
Absolutely NOBODY here is saying anything about you adapting lore "first". The problem people have is you claiming that your version of the lore is canon. -
Quote:Amusing point: nobody here has said they hate you. You're the only person spreading that around, here.hatred for any reason is simply wrong which is why nothing any of them says can or will make a dent in my views.
Quote:I dont call them "My Characters" They are simply character roles I find appealing to RP. However I can try to undertand that character, get inside thier fictional head so to speak, and flesh it out.
I'd respect you if you'd shown that you can create a character that is uniquely yours that doesn't take some important place in CoX canon. As it is, while I respect your right to play pretty much how you want to play, I have very little respect for you as a roleplayer, because you have shown over and over again in this thread that you refuse to a) accept that the views of others may be valid, and b) even take the time to create your own characters without somehow twisting CoH lore around so that they are vastly more important to the world than they have any right to be as a balanced and well-crafted character.
Quote:My entire OP was not ever about a " This is how it happens or should happen" debate it was just my own offering in the current countless posts and threads about states death and why or how could he be brought back. Personally I am glad the last remnants of jack are being expunged from the game, and I truly hope someday all the dev based icons will be removed leaving the world more open to new heroes every day.
Quote:The fact is I think people are truly just jealous because due to my use of lore what I described could easily be something that could happen and has nothing to do with me at all. Each character i suggested being there existed in lore before I made a few my own to enjoy RPing. That is the point of being lore based so when new lore is added you already fit with it quite well. clearly I do a good job of picking my own roles and how I play them because as of yet not one bit of new content was ever added I couldnt easily spin to fit with my portrayel. CoV itself proved that to me as several of its SFs play out like they where custom made AE arcs for a character like T'Keron Valmaz.
I've not once had any problem fitting my own personal creation into the ongoing stories, either. Which tells me that I create better characters than you.
Quote:The end battle in the VSF with the Beast where I can start by acting all aloof and uncaring, right up until Infernal is on the ropes, then I costume change to my human form, and rush in yelling " Leave K'Varr be vile demon! You wish to face a Binder of Beasts, then face the one who has bound your lord to his own flesh!" and then revel in a great one on one with that big ugly while the rest of the group usually stand around going wtf is happening here and is he really soloing that big monster.
Quote:If you do have to constantly adjust and update your lore based character then you likely didnt do strong enough research in the first place to properly take on the role. -
And thus we differ. I have no interest in roleplaying as Positron, or Statesman, or Bentley Berkeley, or Crimson, or General Aarons. Why would I, since they're not my characters to take in whatever direction I wish?
You have utterly missed one of the fundamental aspects that most roleplayers enjoy: the ability to create a character and play that role. Most roleplayers have no interest in playing someone else's character. It actually cheapens the experience. Because they do not have creative control when someone else can say "that's not how the character would behave".
You want to play in your group that allow you to take control of dev created characters, and that's fine by me. I have ZERO problem with that. I have a problem when you expect the entire rest of the roleplaying community to agree that you and you alone have final canonical say in that character's thoughts and actions for everyone else on the server.
Because you don't. Sorry. -

A few random thoughts, and since this discussion has now spread across multiple threads, I'm just going to put them all here.
Some people have defended the OP by comparing his adjustment of canon (and it is adjustment, have no doubt of that, since canon is what the devs tell us it is and nothing more) with the work of Dark Respite (a writer for whom I have great respect, for a number of reasons that aren't relevant here). The simple difference is that at no point has DR tried to convince anyone that TCoSR (and sequels) is canonical. It's at worst like an alternate reality version of events, things that could have happened, and we can take it or leave it. The OP is stating as fact that his versions of characters are true (even when in flat contradiction to canon).
I make characters who exist in the world of City of Heroes. My main has been suggested to have some sort of hate/hate relationship with Ms. Liberty, for example. But I have not once claimed that any of my characters are somehow "more canonical" than any others. I have never taken a canon character and claimed it as my own. Why? Because, even fitting in with canon, I have more creative freedom to write my own characters than to borrow someone else's.
Roleplaying as Marcus Cole, or Dr Vahzilok, or Bentley Berkeley, or a made-up demon lord who is somehow master of all demons and the effective creator of the Circle of Thorns is simply lazy. Can't come up with a character concept of my own, so I'll borrow a character that already exists and "expand" on them. A thousand and one Drizzt Do'urden clones all sniggered at the very thought.
It's weak, poor writing, and poor roleplaying, where the greatest kudos one person can give another is to say "I really like your character". Except it's not yours.
And that is the point of the "hatred". Make your own character that fits within the canon material we have been provided. Don't believe that you have the right to say "history happened this way, actually", and expect everyone else to agree. -
-
Got to agree with Floaty, here.
I read this latest description of "Lore-based RP", and the first thought in my mind was "so, your idea of fun is to take someone else's character and roleplay as that character? Whatever happened to creating your own character and having fun with that, creating your own story, personality, goals, history, adventures and so forth? This isn't roleplaying being described, it's acting, which is a bit like roleplaying. In the same way that having a driving license is like rally driving: kind of similar, but nothing alike." -
Ze wabbit, he mis-spell "tool". Zat iz so funny!
-
Who are you, and what have you done with the real Venture? You keep talking sense that I simply agree with.
-
Quote:This is the bit that made me laugh...I mean come on would you want anyone but an egotistical in game lore junkie to try and play such a character?
The problem most people here have is that YOU are trying to write the game lore. It's the problem that I have, at least.
Sorry, no, your character doesn't have the last breath of Statesman. Hate to break it to you. Well, unless you can get every single RPer on your server to agree that in fact you do. -
So, for question 3, the fact that they are all unique to Doms isn't relevant? It's certainly something they all have in common. I suspect the answer you're looking for is "Assault", though.
I still maintain that question five is entirely subjective, unless it's a pun question and "Derp" is actually an acronym. If it is a pun question, your audience have completely failed to recognise it, which makes it a poor pun question. For a serious answer, due to the simple existence of the Repel power, which I consider to be next to useless, and therefore causing the powerset to contain more "Derp" than I am willing to accept, I'm choosing Kinetics. (See what I mean about it being subjective?)
As for question 7... Red is a colour traditionally associated with heat. The phrase "seeing red" is associated with anger (or "Rage", if you will). Since the maximisation of Rage is a goal for Brutes, the AT as a whole is trying to "maximise their heat". Quod Erat Demonstradum. -
Also, we're you running earlier with Patrol XP? Running out of that is the most likely reason your XP per mob dropped.
Or, in other terms, what colour was the "unfilled" bit of your XP bar before and after the reduction? -
To continue with the humorous intention of the thread: does this mean I'd be disqualified on my main, because I have an SO slotted?
In Rest.
I've spent roughly 1.5 billion Inf on his current build. Everything else is IOd to the nines. But because I don't have him completely stuffed with IOs, I'd not be able to join!
That bit's silly. Everything else he asks for is pretty much okay, though specific powersets seems a little OTT. -
Quote:Yes, it does. The transition occurs at something like 30 yards, and becomes 90 feet. (or it's 20 yards and 60 feet, but whatever, it supports the 3 feet = 1 yard measure).if you get close enough to your target does it switch to how many feet they are away?
You can most easily test this with a mission door, which I have numerous times. I get bored. -
