Quote:Quite true. As i understand it, it works as if it was an enhancement slotted in each power, sort of like a invisible Hami-O in each power. And just like a Hami-O it will only enhance an existing aspect of the power, unless it's an aspect that's tagged to be unaffected by enhancements. That I did not know. OK. Now the incarnate system is amazing
. THAT IMO is what makes the alpha slot incredible, I can't believe they have marketed the alpha slot talk in a way that I have been over all this info and never heard that before.
Edit: NOW you can probably see why I was unimpressed with the alpha slot before lol. There's a huge difference between thinking one of those alpha slots gets dropped in a tier9/Hasten power by itself to increase a single power's recharge by 33%, and hearing it actually is global, and almost half as effective as hasten all by itself. -
Quote:Dispersion Bubble is the mez protect and +def bubble, so that's not actually the one you wanted turned off, and no one running that one would ever be inclined to do so.Brute... must build fury... use damage aura for extra hurt...
Wait... why is the enemy moving away? Must run after.
Enemy is running backwards? Is this a bug? Dammit, out of my range again. WTH?
(Sudden burst of insight: there's an MM in the team who was dispersion bubble.)
I, Broot: <MM's name>, plz turn of dispersion bubble. The enemies are out of my damage aura and AOEs.
(Waits patiently for 5 mins. Enemies are still being pushed away.)
I, Broot: <MM's name>, can you do me a favor and turn of dispersion bubble? I need the enemies to surround me.
(Waits patiently for 5 mins. Enemies are still being pushed away. Mouse hovers near kick button...)
Am I asking for far too much? Should I have phrased my request more forcefully or not at all, just to let the MM play as he likes? I must admit that it irritated me enough that I wanted to kick the MM off the team.
Force Bubble is the one that was doing the shoving, and i'm pretty confident the MM knew what you meant.
Generally i'd just run after the enemies after asking the MM to either drop the Force Bubble or stop pushing them ahead of me. If the MM was using it intelligently to shove all the mobs into a smaller area or corner for easier disposal/AoE use, then i'd be fine with it. If he was just constantly pushing them away and scattering them i'd leave the team. -
Quote:You upgrade by combining the old one with other pieces to turn it into the next ranked ability. Thanks! There was so much info that part didn't sink in. So we're getting like 40 new enhancements and only one can be slotted until at least issue 20? (albeit they ignore ED, give a levelshift, and it seems you start with a low tier and upgrade it, but still that's a lotta hype for a slot
)
Oh, and that brings my next question, if they are "upgradable", not "oo I got better salvage to craft a stronger one and replace it", how do you upgrade them?
Keep in mind that only the Alpha slot acts as an enhancement, and it acts like an enhancement that's added to all your powers, and it allows you to bypass part of the ED caps when it's used.
Later slots will grant completely new powers and abilities, but exactly what and how isn't currently available. -

Quote:In the original Going Rogue beta that Alpha Slot was an ability/slot you unlocked several different ways.I guess there was an announcement, but I don't frequent the announcement boards here, I got that link from this and that was the only link there, no specific pages or forum posts to be spoken of
Edit: I have read over the 3 pages, Overview, Alpha Slot, and Lore. I saw the the Alpha Slot page already, it lists enhancements and salvage, no direct info on how to obtain "the alpha slot". I'm under the impression you craft the enhancements from the new TF salvage, but where does the actual -slot- come from?
According to the GR site here:Quote:Taking the first step toward such power won't be easy. Your character needs to meet with Mender Ramiel to begin a storyline that will teach some of the secrets behind being an Incarnate. This story arc ultimately unlocks the Alpha Slot.
IIRC once unlocked the Incarnate menus are accessed by clicking "Incarnate" at the top of the powers tab. When you create an Incarnate ability it always remain usable unless you combine it with other pieces to create a higher rank ability. You can switch between the various Incarnate abilities every 5 minutes or so if you want. Incarnate abilities do not function when exemplared. -

Out of curiosity, what features were supposed to be part of the City Vault that aren't supported by Titan Sentinel?
It's been quite a while since City Vault was declared dead, and even longer since i read about the intended features. -

Quote:HOWEVER, if they don't get all the known major bugs corrected before the 16th they will still put it off until the 30th or so. With the amount of new material coming in this issue there's no guarantee they'll have it ready for release by the 16th, although only the Devs and beta testers could say how well things are going, so it's all speculation at the moment. If it goes to open beta in the next couple of days i'd say that the 16th seems very likely. We'll see.Thanksgiving here in the U.S. is November 25th, which essentially means that if issue 19 is not released by November 16th (a week from tomorrow) then we won't see it until November 30th. (Logic: They tend to release updates on Tuesdays, and that's the first Tuesday after Thanksgiving week).
HOWEVER, I am betting that it will be out next week. Releasing it at the end of this month would give them only a couple of weeks before the Winter Event goes live, and considering the amount of new material coming in this Issue I am sure they want a bit more time to correct any minor bugs. -
It's repeated the predownload more or less at random at least 4 times for me out of 12 times or so that i've quit to desktop. (The CoH client takes about 5 seconds to load up, and if left running will eventually use at least 1.5 gigs of memory, so i usually quit to desktop whenever i log off to do something else or even just to take a short break. With 4 gigs of RAM running out of memory isn't really a concern, but once it gets much over 1.5 the client has a tendency to crash.)

Quote:Some interesting points there. Most of which seem rather obvious to me, though admittedly not in a quantified form.*posts an interesting and illuminating analysis regarding point-based character creation systems similar to the Hero System that she thinks would be workable within the limitations of MMO design*
That's why in my earlier post i stated that Hero System-based character creation mechanics would not be workable within an MMO, and simply stuck to pointing out that both the Hero System and this game are based on using endurance to generate damage, and that both systems have ways of managing and modifying the costs.
Y'know, if i had the resources to finance an MMO based on Arcanaville's design concepts i'd probably do so. Well, except maybe the option to punish players by giving them exactly what they ask for that she's mentioned before.
Although i think it would be interesting to have the game provide multiple genres of superhuman/scifi/fantasy settings with several different worlds/dimensions based on different genres. The problem of course is to supply the amount content to make each genre have enough content unique to itself at launch. It would require the sort of robust and flexible content generation tools that CoH is only getting 6 years on, and that as far as i know no other MMO has available at this point.
There have been a few PnP games based on characters interacting with and within multiple settings, but it may be a bit overambitious to attempt launching an MMO based on this premise. -
To paraphrase The Incredibles:
That. Is. AWESOME!
Edit: i just used the build export utility to export the build for my heavily IOed Dark/Ice Defender to Mids'. It was a build that i did entirely in my head and as i leveled up that i was quite happy with. For over a year i'd been telling myself i'd get around to copying it to Mids', and now it suddenly became trivial. -
Quote:Ah, i hadn't looked into the Rikti and Praetoria story stuff since GR was underway, so it may have been retconned, or i may be remembering incorrectly. They've just never heard of a Nemesis plot, that's all
The devs were actually asked about Rikti in Praetoria as Hero Con last year, and Hero 1 said that they hadn't found Praetoria, and weren't even looking for it.
Of course, Nemesis getting Praetoria to attack the Rikti homeworld, but then creating Freedom Phalanx automatons on Primal Earth as a decoy would be quite typical of his way of operating -
Quote:There were a lot of Marvel covers with characters that appear in the comic in some sort of big dramatic scene/setting that is not actually in the issue. Very often the dialogue was some piece of absurdity that did not accurately reflect the events of the issue. So not that different from DC of the same era.I feel though that Marvel's covers had pretty much the same M.O. Maybe not when the character of the comic is first being introduced, but later in their lives. I know I went through some of my childhood comics and was amazed about how the covers had very little to do with what is inside.

Quote:Hey, he can also fly.Captain Hindsight has to have the most ineffectual power. What is the point of knowing that this should have been done, but not being able to do anything about it?
Of course that power also sucks if it's only good for flying to places where something's already happened just to state the obvious. -
Quote:As long as they turn the burner on and start cooking i don't care all that much which one they use.In the Powers Round table, I was in, we asked about power pool and APP power custimization. They said that any pool power custimization is on a burner, they are just not sure which burner it is. front or back

Maybe i misread it, but i'm pretty sure it's canon that the Rikti encountered Praetoria when tracing the origin of the Nemesis attack that precipitated the Rikti Invasion.
Edit: Although most sources suggest Nemesis as the instigator of the war using his automatons to impersonate the Freedom Phalanx, automatons you encounter in a CoV arc, but at least one mid-ranked Rikti agrees with you:
"Though he didn't seem like the type to talk much, the Rikti Psi-scout called Lk'Onik had something he wanted to say: 'Longtime Didn't: Trust Humans.
We Thought: Humans Attacked: First.
Was There: First Attack.
Thousands: Dead. Lost: Everything Important.
Looked like: Freedom Phalanx.
Further Attacks: Dozens.
Finally Traced: Point of Origin.
Thought Justification: Protecting Ourselves.
... : ...
Since then, seen: Freedom Phalanx; Seen: Earth-Heroes.
Phalanx = Attackers: Impossible.
My Theory: Praetorians. Nothing Else: Makes Sense.'" -
Quote:Fair enough. i find it interesting myself. i edited my post to include the same style of argument presented in a slightly different context simply because i found the idea amusing.Truth be told, the only reason I have posted more in this thread is an attempt to understand the mindset/outlook Ultimo_ presents in an attempt to further my knowledge of cognitive dissonance.
Having to deal with people on a daily basis that use emotional feelings in place of logic and reason, I am always interested in how they come to the conclusions and opinions they hold.
In reality, it's very difficult to pry out the why from them because they tend to think 'because it's how I feel' is a valid, logical answer.
Brain chemistry is simply fascinating to me. Being a gamer, where rules logic is king in terms of implementation, but yet making decisions based entirely upon feelings is a mental juxtaposition I love to explore. -
Quote:He wants the very concept of endurance usage gone. It's good enough for PnP games, but has no place in computer games. Sadly, hundreds, if not thousands, of computer games use variations on this mechanic. Now you are just being evasive ans obtuse, refusing to answer a simple question.
There are builds you have been shown for your characters that would allow them to never run out of endurance using good attack and defenses.
How is that not sufficient for you?
Also, since it's his opinion you can't prove him wrong. It doesn't matter if the sub-arguments he uses are demonstrably composed of bovine droppings, since they're part of his opinion they're not wrong either.
i think the sticking point here is that most people are unable to accept the premise that opinions, even any factual errors presented as part of the opinion, are incapable of being wrong. On the plus side having it finally stated so clearly means that anyone who cares about having a useful conversation, discussion or debate can now simply ignore any thread or post by Ultimo_. If someone honestly believes that simply by being presented as an opinion that any position or stand on any issue cannot be falsified then there is no point to engaging in any conversation with them.
Simply say, "ookaay...", and move on to a more useful dialogue.
"That's nice, dear." Also works.
Just because in my opinion* it's fun let's apply that "opinions cannot be wrong" method to another arena....
*bzzzt bzzzt*
Park Ranger: "Hello? Yellowstone National Park Service."
Demented Moogle: "Hello. i wanted to warn you that in my opinion Velociraptor attacks are real danger to hikers in the park."
PR: "Uh, sir, there have never been any velociraptor attacks in the park. They died out millions of years ago."
DM: "That's not true. It's my opinion that 37 people were attacked and partially eaten by Velociraptors last year. They are a threat to hikers in the park and there should be Velociraptor patrols."
PR: "There were 37 wild dog attacks in the country last year. Velociraptors had nothing to do with it."
DM: "No, it was Velociraptors. It's part of my opinion that those attacks were done by Velociraptors, and opinions aren't facts, so they can't be proven wrong. I've been hiking past the Yellowstone National Park sign for 129 years, so my opinion is worth more than your 'facts.' Velociraptors ate the rest of my family."
PR: "Sir, this park was created slightly over 128 years ago, so I doubt you were hiking past the park sign then, even if I accept that you're over 130 years old."
DM: "Well it's my opinion that I am and I was. Since it's my opinion it can't be wrong."
PR: "Thank you for expressing your concerns sir. We will take them under advisement."
*click*
Park Ranger 2: "Who was that?"
PR: "Some demented lunatic."
PR2: "Oh?"
PR: "He was worried about being attacked by dinosaurs in the park."
PR2: "..."
PR: "Yeah, exactly."
*Remember, opinions can't be wrong if they're opinions. -
Honestly, with all the work going on with regards to powered exoskeletons and exotic armor materials there's a lot out there that was just comic book fantasy even a decade ago, but Yves Rossy continues to refine and shrink his jet-pack.

Quote:As i recall the endurance cost of mob powers tends to be higher than the player equivalent as well even with the player powers unslotted. This is an odd persistent myth. Critters use endurance in exactly, precisely the same way we do. Powers that have endurance cost burn that endurance upon use, and if the critter lacks that level of endurance the power cannot be used.
In particular, critters recover endurance with the same basic mechanism, which means they recover endurance in ticks of 6.67%. So a minion with a 100 point endurance bar will only recover endurance in 6.67 point jumps. If you are trying to drain them with drain but without -recovery, you won't be able to prevent them from getting at least an occasional tick of endurance. If they have attacks that need less than 6.67 endurance, they will be able to use them and will probably fire them off right away. But they will be stopped from using powers with higher costs if you can keep them to only one tick. Even with the 200 point bar of Bosses, holding them to 13.33 points or less does mean you'll tend to negate their heavy hitting powers and AoEs. AVs, on the other hand, are virtually impossible to inactivate without heavy -recovery, because a single recovery tick on an AV is enough endurance to use just about any power in existence (~53 points of endurance).
Not too worried about them getting Hurdle since many mobs can do a two story vertical jump if the AI tells it to do it.
