Quote:Sounds to me like you're full of hot air.
Wake up, Scarlet: I have plenty of fun playing this game EXACTLY AS IT IS. Suggesting that I should be playing something else when I am perfectly happy with what I'm playing right now because YOU are not happy with it is remarkably backwards, sort of a "get up so I can sit down" mechanic. If the game is not hard enough for you and difficulty settings don't cut it, then perhaps YOU should look for another game to play, because I'm perfectly happy here, now, as things are, and I don't believe it falls on me to bring up arguments as to why it SHOULDN'T change.
Here's what always boggles my mind: People have been telling me that I should team or die. When I flip them a birdie and explain that I'm perfectly happy, they tell me I should play something else. What kind of sense does that make? Where is the logic in that? How does my happiness in the game and refusal to partake in others' completely arbitrary "better" way to play transpire in to me not having fun and needing something other to have fun in? I wouldn't have stayed here for five years if I wasn't perfectly content, and as far as I can see, I'm not being forced into doing anything I don't like any time soon.
That argument makes no sense, yet it keeps recurring. And it boggles my mind.
Seems to me you're the one at odds here.
This game hasn't been "exactly as it is" (shouting doesn't make your statement any more valid by the way) since it Issue 2. It's constantly changing - and in terms of game play it's mostly getting easier, especially since NCSoft took over the whole franchise. (No I'm not gonna get sidetracked by things like ED.) For me, is a sad thing. If it was good to go on Day One and didn't bomb then, then it should be good now.
It's fundamentally a multi-player game. If it was not then you wouldn't need an Internet connection, and it would be an FPS or something. If you don't want to team that makes you the one at odds and you might be quite happy bimbling along but why should the majority of player - who are happy to team - have to have their game dumbed down by the dictat of those too anti-social to join in? -
Quote:sounds to me like you're better off playing solitaire on WindowsI know full well what I'm losing. Waiting, grumbling, rushing, aberrant playstyles, singing to someone else's tune, too much chaos for me to care about what's going on and the inability to simply let of the keyboard any time I damn please. I take a very hands-off approach to playing this game, in that I watch TV while I play it, and will occasionally simply swivel my chair away from the game, alt-tab to listen to music, walk out of the room to chat with my family, lie down to have a nap and a huge number of spontaneous things that are harmful to a team. I also don't enjoy people's breakneck speed of gameplay, constant rushing and unreasonable quest for ultimate power. My playstyle does not fit well with settings where I depend on other people and other people depend on me, so I'm not missing much. I team enough to know that.
"Should" is a bad argument, if for no reason other than because I can simply counter with "no, it should not." No, signature characters should damn well NOT be tougher than me. If anything, I should be a signature character, I should be the Galactus event and I should be the big name and THEY should be scrambling to put together some means to take me down, not the other way around. This is my escapist fantasy, damn it! I want it to cater to my fancy of being the greatest, not constantly remind me that even with all the super powers out there, I'm still a no-name nobody who can't wipe his *** without seven other people holding my hand, if you'll pardon my English.
You have your fantasy, but please kindly avoid telling me what mine "should" be.
I happen to abhor, despise, detest, hate, scorn and overall not really like events like these very much, indeed. The whole purpose of such an event, to my eyes, at least, is to tell me that I suck, that I'm weak, that I'm worthless and the only way my existence and my spasms actually matter is as quite literal cannon fodder. Literally, the only use for me is to hurl my body at someone ELSE who gets to take up the spotlight in the hope of taking out a few more hit points before I'm smacked down like an irritating insect. Precisely what all the minor critters in a game like Doom or Quake are designed to do, when you think about it, and I have personally never dreamed to be a meaningless minion for someone more important to pop-cap on his way to the big time.
For years people have been asking what the point of being a super hero in a whole city full of super heroes is, when all that results in is you being just as mundane in your everyday life. I suppose if someone is incredibly cool, popular and awesome in his real life, his dream game might be to play meaningless gnat who doesn't matter in a city bursting at the seams with them, but since my life is nowhere near as successful, that just doesn't work for me. "Epic" events do nothing for me but reaffirm the reality that I suck and I could never do anything meaningful by myself. Specifically, I feel like I needed someone to do it for me.
It's like large 8-man teams a lot of the time. What's the point of being one one when half the team can fall asleep and the other half won't even notice? I prefer to do my own dirty work and perform my own heroics, and I prefer feeling like I, personally, and just that cool.
Other MMOs have "epic" content aplenty, and that is over half the reason why I'll probably never play any of them. This one focuses on ME ME ME, and that is pretty much the sum total of why I'm still here.
*edit*
I should not, that this is not to say you are wrong and I am right, but merely to explain why I enjoy that this game takes a different approach, and why I would be devastated if it did an about face and did what I've hated in every other MMO. -

Quote:Well you've been the one grumbling, not me.I have major, major issue with this. Especially where I've been grumbling about the LRSF lately.
The game is incosistant with the major NPCS. One mission where I had to save GW's backside, and she got faceplanted by a team of Longbow. Yet, she's an AV, a Patron no less, who suddenly goes from patsy level to Godmode when you have to fight her.
Same with the likes of Positron. I've Duod him on Hero setting before. Then I fight the sod in the LRSF, and he has 'lolh4xskillz'.
Some AVs and EBs are fine. Others are far from it.
I'd agree there are some inconsistencies but often that can be resolved by team composition. I'd also suggest there's a few story reasons why an NPC might be different power levels - it would be hard to imagine GW being captured by Numpty Joe and his Bubmling Cohorts - which is why you're being offered up as the sacrificial vict... uh... noble rescuer to see if you can get her backside out of there with minimal collateral damage. In other words it'd take an elite team to take her in, and they should therefore be a challenge to you and to her. Perhaps not the best solution technically but in any clash between tech and story I'll take story every time. -
Quote:Nowhere in the manual have I seen it explained that I am mandated to play with another person ever. It just suggests that I might want to. But just because other people exist in the game doesn't mean I have to team with them. Just because I CAN team doesn't mean I HAVE to. And, no, the game has not been dumbed down nearly enough.
Except, in this game we too are super beings that shouldn't be easy to wipe, yet that is exactly what you suggest the enemies do to us. The game does very much NOT need any toughening up. If you want it to be harder, you are welcome to increase your difficulty setting. You keep your hands away from MY difficulty settings and kindly avoid telling ME how hard MY game "should" be. I don't play it for the challenge, but I fail to see how that is any of your business.
GMs and AVs are more than tough enough for what they represent. Maybe you enjoy a game that constantly reminds you your character is an insignificant gnat and he needs the help of seven other people just to tie his shoes, but I do not. I enjoy the game when I am the hero of my own story, when I am strong enough to take care of myself and where THEY need to band together take on me, not the other way around.
Your opinion is fine and all, but I fail to see why you can't have that now, when this is expressly why the difficulty settings were expanded upon.
If you're not teaming, you're probably losing out on the best part of the game experience. Your loss I guess.
As for difficulty, there's nothing epic about steam-rollering mobs of your own level. Signature characters should be tougher than you and should be a challenge - how do you think they got to be signature characters in the first place, by being Mr Average?
Your play style clearly varies to mine but that doesn't mean either P.o.V. is incorrect it's just different. I do use the difficulty settings but one thing this game is sadly lacking in my opinion is the "Galactus Event" where the threat is so tough that it takes a number of super-teams to defeat it. The Winter Lord is close but once enough debuffers on the team, it's resolved. It's a very difficult scenario to achieve but it's a lot of fun when it does happen. -

Quote:I've had no problems at all with components or service. If it's an established fair then traders will be very wary of having an upset customer in front of them while other people are browsing, added to which they have no problem returning items to their suppliers. You can then attempt to hunt them down when (not if) it explodes.
Seriously, custom PCs are only as good as the people that build them and you should get references from people who've had work done by them before. I paid - repeatedly - for that mistake but at least the shop was local and a good deal of huffing and hard stares around other customers meant I was only paying for parts, not labour.
I've always heard pretty good things about Rock Direct, but not uniformly good. Alienware machines look fabulous but are even more overpriced than VAIOs (though not as explodey, and with great service).
From your post you seem to be indicating you had one built by a local shop - which gives you one source for your components. -
I'd say check on line and look for a computer fair. Depending on where you are there are some very good ones around about, and often you'll get a PC built to your spec in next to no time. You get to choose what goes inside it, and they will build it for you.

Quote:Congrats MichelleWe mess up Space Time all the time in Ouroboros.
Look at Mender Silos's TF and SF.
They have opposing goals.
In one, you prevent Lord Recluse from taking over Paragon City. In the other, you help him.
I'm seriously expecting the Coming Storm to blow in and Ouroboros to be revamped by GR...
Congrats on saving Breakneck though!
Yeah never been quite sure about how permanent Ouroboros is... the very fact that the access is a Temp Power is suspcious to me. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see something happen to it. -
I've read a lot of this post and I can't help thinking that it's sad that we're getting people complaining that certain NPCs or tasks are too difficult to solo.
This is an MMO... the key word there is multi-player and ultimately City of is a team game. It's been dumbed down significantly over the years I've been playing and yet people still have a desire to be spoon fed and be able to rinse and repeat the toughest content with no challenge.
My personal view, which seems at odds with many here is that this game needs toughening up again. Things should be difficult especially solo. It's a game based on superbeings who are above the norm in every way and shouldn't be easy to wipe.
GMs & AVs aren't nearly as tough as they should be. They should be able to take an average small team down without blinking, and EBs should be able to do so to a solo character too. Taking out a named NPC in this game should be an epic occasion but instead it's mostly a slightly overpowered boss. -
So does being rezzed by a /poison MM
My first ever LRSF was an Mo run on my SoA. Went perfectly - I was the newb in a group who'd done it a number of times before - and I've succeeded and failed at various other times. -
Quote:Interesting points but you've also not mentioned one thing: people do not believe they, or their actions, are evil, by and large. They justify their actions as being "for the greater good" or as being "cruel to be kind" etc. The ends very often justify the means, and very often they just don't think about the moral consequences of their actions.I also can't get around being a villain for several reasons.
I know why some people think that villains and anti-heroes are "cool". It is because they perceive these people as breaking the rules and acting independently of society and the like.
Of course, in reality, while they are reacting negatively to the outside influences, they are still being driven by those outside influences. They're letting themselves be controlled by something other than themselves. There are very, very few villains that are acting out of Free Will.
Darth Vader is reacting to a desire to never be powerless again, his one major act of Free Will was shortly before his death.
Lex Luthor is reacting to the fact that Superman is more popular than he is.
Sauron is a slave to his own pride and fear of final destruction.
Most versions of the Joker are driven by a mental defect that makes it impossible for him to relate to people.
And so on.
Heroes, by contrast, look like they're bending to the will of society in general. However, the bounds of society exist for a reason. If you sit down analyze and consider your actions for their overall benefit, most of the time, you will find that the manner in which accepted society wants you to behave is the most efficient and effective way to behave. However, since loads of other people are taking the same action merely because "that's what you're suppposed to do" it tends to bury the people that are making the actions out of Will rather than expectation.
It's one of those cases where it is rather hard to tell whether someone is acting out of Will or not because so often the choice of Will mirrors the choice of Expectation (someone acted out of Will in the past to lead society that way, however).
It is very easy to do the selfish thing, the thing that benefits just you and only for the short term. It is very hard to do the right thing all the time.
Villainy is sort of like driving the wrong way down the highway for no better reason than because you were told not to. They're the ultimate victims of reverse psychology. And, eventually, their petulant attitude will catch up with them.
Personally, playing someone that is doomed to be caught in a metaphorical and spiritual head on collision is not my idea of fun.
For me, I like playing both sides of the divide - my biggest problem is red side with those awful Mercy Island arcs and then being forced into paper missions in Port Oakes. At least hero side you have different origins and can get into the Hollows or Kings Row early. -

Happy Birthday Mr Lee indeed!
Thankyou sincerely from this comic fan for all the countless hours of pleasure you've given us! -
How come "Take this to Azuria" never got a mention?
Good one tho - especially the punchline -
Couple of difficulty questions:
Does changing your difficulty setting change the rewards you earn in terms of inf gained, recipe drops etc?
If I am on a higher difficulty setting than my team mates in a PUG, does that affect the setting of the team, especially during TFs etc.
I've had a look around but not having a great deal of success so some clarification would be welcome, thanks. -

Rep is silly
But a more serious thought relating to the OPs original statement is simply that if a mime dies in Paragon and there's nobody to see it, does it make a sound? -

Welcome to the game. You're on the highest population EU server. The last official word on population figures where when Ghost Raptor - a former EUCC - stated that Union and Defiant had similar figures to Freedom and Virtue. However that is out of date and I'd suggest you follow some of the advice given by others in this thread.
You're welcome to send me a message - I play almost exclusively on Defiant and my global handle is @Riff
Also broadcast that you're looking for an Active Supergroup. I'm sure you'll get plenty of responses and will get a chance to meet other players and teams.
Enjoy the game!
