Excellent guide thanks for posting this - makes a good recap even for somebody who has lots of 50s already.
Only thing I think you missed out is the advantage gained by temp powers from the Safeguard/Bank missions. Some useful stuff there and some badges too. -
Thanks for this, very useful. I'm struggling to get to grips with the ATIOs and this helps.
Couple of questions, the first from Captain Bleedin' Obvious: Are common IOs not subject to the -3? Therefore slotting lvl 50 IOs (damage, recharge etc) I don't lose the bonus if exemplaring down?
also Enhancement boosters - they seem to work on SOs up until 53, but not on 53s or higher... but can they take IOs to a higher level and what is their effect on Procs? -
Calvin Scott TF restored to replace Sister P - which remains available via Ouroboros - and becomes WST for that week
BAB gets Manticore TF.
Hero One gets Statesman TF.
LRSF rejigged to reflect the new Signature characters. -
I'm really enjoying your memories on this. I think the general consensus seems to be the Hollows isn't as much fun and I guess that's borne out by its emptiness.
Given how much easier the game is these days I wonder if it couldn't be put back a bit the way it was on the outside at least? Well I'm sure the Devs have more interesting things to do os I'm guess it's academic but hey... I can dream right? -
Quick question: Does this help explain the original omission of Manticore from the first release of the artwork? Remember he got airbrushed back in when the player base picked up on it...
might also explain the broken bow and arrow too.
What about BAB's glove then? -
Quote:My problem is apparently she's had quite the growth spurt since age 18.
I could have used that, I've been the same damn height since I was 13.
That's not always a bad thing...
But to address the OPs concern - whilst I understand what he's saying, I think we just have to accept that time doesn't work in game the way it does in the real world. Hell, how many times have you run the ITF on the same character? Have you done it on different characters?
It's generally accepted that there are fewer metahumans in the CoHiverse than exist in game and missions only get run once despite Ouroboros - and yet we often repeat them many times. That's a paradox we happily accept - in the same way that we accept that in the fifty years of the Fantastic Four, they haven't really aged nor has Franklyn grown up and Sue Richards isn't pushing 70ish...
Penny was a teenager when we first encountered her - now she's grown up. That's ok. I know Praetorian Vanessa De Vore is dead because I saw her body and watched Desmond Moaner take her mask. But I'll meet her again in Praetoria on a lowbie sometime soon. -
Wait... who's mary gonna sue?
-
I've only run it the once and I was on a racing team so dind't get the whole story - but I was like "WTF" at the cutscene - and I won't deny it choked me a little to see it. I was totally gobsmacked and I must admit the Devs caught me on this one.
It was poignant at first sight - though I've not yet been able to critique the story . My first and immediate response was to have a big, surprised sad.
Now I've realised is they've just turned Manticore into a clone of Batman - a badass psychotic out to avenge his nearest and dearest. Playboy millionaire loses his next of kin - Devs, be very careful how you proceed because your critics won't be afraid to pan the subsequent story if it fails to pass muster. That's not a threat in any way it's just the reality of having so many passionate fans who've bought into the whole CoH thing.
Of course, the reverse of that is, who else could they have killed to give this the same impact? And frankly I cannot think of anyone. But huge Kudos to the Devs on making this happen to coincide with the Valentines event and of course the Wedding mission, making it extra poignant.
I'm very interested in seeing how this pans out - and a little sad. But I guess the Calvin Scott TF gets back into the main game now. -
Quote:I would like to point out that we only stalemated with the Rikti because we sealed them off from their home dimension with magic—their one true weakness. From what I can gather, the capabilities of the Rikti on their homeworld is nothing to sneeze at and they would have decimated our world utterly if it wasn't for the Omega Team. The Rikti, after all, seem to have their own Incarnates (U'kon G'rai, anyone?) and even managed to Rikti-fy one of ours (Hero 1).
I wouldn't be surprised if their homeworld's resources rival that of the Battalion's.
If that were the case surely they'd be back more frequently... Sure they have big nasties... but they aren't so nasty now we're Incarnates. Metahumans have increased exponentially since the Rikti first arrived.
Hell they don't even try invading any more cuz we kick their arses to kingdom come. -
Yeah I understand why it exists, but in general it's a good thing - it makes the game more populous, and does provide a genuine alterntive to the low levels and AH but doesn't do much for those who don't wanna run it on the low levels
-
QR: I've really enjoyed them. I've had about... 29 packs? (bought the bulk lot and got 5 extra over time just for something and giggles) and I can't say there's anything I can't use.
No black wolf... but tehn I don't really care about it - in one sense I'd rather get something good. But I now have more merits than if I'd got a toon to 50 and run all the TFs and stuff... plus some useful team stuff too.
I enjoy turning the cards over just to see what I got... thats part of the fun.
Plus, I buy these willingly and get cool stuff AND keep my favourite game alive!
What's not to like? -
So I fancied a change today and decided to run my lvl 10 StJ/SR brute around the Hollows a bit. I sent a few tells to invite people and ended up duoing with a PB... so we did most of the Wincott arc and then moved on to Flux.
It was very cool and a lot of fun and we completed the whole thing including Frostfire in well under two hours. Very enjoyable and more than a bit nostalgic, and a handly little duo.
What struck me most were two things: How empty the Hollows was and why is this great content now not played any more (I know why, curse you AE and DFB) and how much easier it was than when I started. I'm a long time vet I know, damn near six years but to do that in the old days at level 10/12 with only two characters would've been a feat for the annals of CoH.
There are plenty of good reasons why that should be so... there's so much to do the time sinks have been removed - rightly so - I reckon Frostie is good for a speed run these days.
Now you kids get off my lawn!!! -
Quote:My impression is that the game in its early conception was heavily influenced by Lovecraft; with the Circle, the Coralax, Rularuu, Shivans, the original Battalion, and so on. (In addition to other influences, of course.)
Now it's more of a Star Wars / Green Lantern / D&D scenario, with players charging up at the Well and acting as Guardians of the Well, probably eventually to become Wells themselves (Omega slot?).
That's a very interesting point - we become the greatest we can be... and then there needs to be something we must fight against.
Somebody above also said the Rikti have fought the Battalion off - which is interesting because as the game stands, we're pretty well stalemated with the Rikti at present. That could lead one to suspect the Battalion would be somewhat circumspect in their initial contact with us... plenty of fifth columnists (lower case variety) etc... The idea being if the Rikti and the Humans have fought each other to a standstill and the Rikti can beat the Battalion... then when the Rikti and Humans join forces to take on the Battalion...
Maybe with Statesman out of the way we can now be a bit more pro-active in making our world safe.
As for influences on the game they draw from many many sources but there's a lot of Squadron Supreme that just screams "City of Heroes" from its pages. -
I guess Enhancement Unslotters make this a viable proposition for those who WANT enuff.
Ps, Zombie Man I want a refund!!!! your affections no good to me!!! -
Quote:I like the sentiment but that's not what I understand the Well to be - were it to be so it'd be much more pleasing. However my understanding is that the Well is a separate and distinct entity that's little more than a lunatic psychotic witha lot of power - however it's not humanity. Conclusion; either I've missed something or it's written so poorly the meaning is lost in delivery.I'm having a hard time understanding this sentiment.
The Well = Humanity. It is everything we are and we are everything that is it. It is our collected potential, will, and the force to use them. It is the scientist that is driven to create feats of technological impossibility, the mutant that learns to control his genetics with resolve, the natural warrior who learns how to go +7.5% faster with a little gamble most think unnatural; the Battalion are coming to consume us, everything we are.
Good lord, isn't it MORE awful that they might take our Well and LEAVE US intact, doomed to wander without merit and will? Sure, getting eaten might suck, but... *shiver* imagine if they didn't!
I'm also still, honestly, quite intrigued by a species so powerful the Shivans are their scouts and herald and use intergalactic beings (Kheldians) as their fuel.
If that doesn't excite you or scare you, well, my friend, you've skydived a few too many times and have blown an adrenal gland.
Quote:I guess it depends what floats your boat. The Battalion as they were appeared as a Cthulu or Unicron type entity. It didn't matter about your alignment, beliefs, weapons, powers... you were getting consumed, end of. That's a threat: a foe who you are nothing more to than a light snack.
Bear in mind that IMHO, the Well is, as others have described, a bad plot device and something that should never have been brought to the forefront of the plot and it's hard for me to care that much about it. Using Shivans as scouts and other species as fuel is intreguing and very epic hence why I've been excited about the Coming Storm since they were first mentioned.
In short, the Battalion were already an exciting, epic threat to me from how they were built up in the first place and I hope they still will be. Adding the Well into the plot does nothing for me other than make me groan in the knowledge that we'll have to put up with yet more nonsense about the Well in the future. I guess YMMV as they say.
Obviously - we know we cannot lose the fight against the Coming Storm, whatever entity it is - because if we do, then it's literally Game Over... so I don't envy the challenge the Devs have to meet, especially the writers.
In my opinion, the game has come on in leaps and bounds since GR arrived in terms of graphics, shiny and the new powersets are a lot of fun. Many of the mechanics are great too... but the writing hasn't reached the same level of awesome. Let's hope that the Coming Storm addresses that. -
Quote:Memories of Omega Sektor:
The pre-meet up in the Square Peg (Damn did I love that pub)
Stacks of free pizza being brought in
Kerensky with a concussion
Sleep deprivation
Traumatized security guards
Several anxiety attacks
I think on early Sunday morning with no sleep I wound up rabbiting to Kall before heading off in a daze to be delivered to a friend's house, where I slept off the lack of sleep, had more pizza, and wound up heading home on Easter Monday.
Oh, we got NCSoft Backpacks. Mine was red and I still have it, though it's a little battered now.
I still have the Arachnos cape I won in the "badge" hunt tied to the back of my chair.
Much fun was had. I still got the interviews with War Witch, Ghost Raptor, Kerensky and Rockjaw too... and Ms Liberty and Ghost Widow's breakers. -
Quote:That's it in a nutshell for me. For me, the Battalion was more fearsome when they didn't have a Well munching fetish to them. To worry about them wanting to consume our Well means you kind of have to give two hoots about our Well which, quite frankly, I don't. I'd far rather have a foe that wants to consume everything like Rularuu rather than honing in on a meta-plot artefact that I care nothing for.
But anyway, this isn't helpful. My dislike of current Well Lore is detracting from discussion about the Battalion as it stands now rather than what it might have been. So I apologise for the derail.
To be fair, what you've described sounds rather like the plot of Marvel's Annihilation series, so if they retained exactly that concept it's probably a game killer.
I've gone to visit Prometheus and spent a good hour or more reading and rereading his sordid little tail. [sic - good enough for Carroll, good enough for me]
I'm convinced that he is "The Well" that we are dealing with and he's giving Cole his power, whilst setting us against him because he's scared by the Battalion and that's meant his tale's between his legs [I did it again, sorry.]
He's clearly having a loose bowel moment over this, and is essentially arranging an arena fight between us and Tyrant, and the winner gets to be his champion and fight the Battalion and stop him being eaten. He's doing it remotely because he knows if we suss him out, then he's got nothing left - and so he's gone to the end of time and is trying to manipulate us from the base of the (not very) Grand Schemer Nemesis - and if we find out we'd just tell him to GTFO. So he has to manipulate us from a distance - almost as though we're his Champions Online [ Ok, I'll stop now, I promise]
Two other things I noticed from speaking wtih him: No mention of the TPN or MoM trials - which seems to be a curious oversight. More importantly - he's scared of us. I'm undecided about the writing - some of it's pretty ham fisted, but I'm not going to open that can of worms here - but some is subtle as though he's saying: "I can control Tyrant, but I don't think he's up to the job of saving me, but I can't control a whole bunch of heroes to that extent, so I must give them free will and beg them to save me." He needs us, but once we've gotten that power the genie's out of the bottle and there's no going back. It could be that by saving him, we emasculate him - which is a subtle take on Cronus and his castrating Uranus.
There are other wells out there, and Prometheus has told us that Zeus was one of the first Incarnates - but just a man. The Titans could well be the other Wells, the original Incarnates - there are clearly others around - we've just not met them.
Maybe that's for the future - we save Prometheus from Battalion, and then he summons his brother Titans to save himself from us. -
Quote:Nah... it's Rularuu. Stormwatcher badge confirms it.
The specific wording there is: "Some see their discovery of Primal Earth's dimension as inevitable; a "coming storm" which could rival the Rikti Invasion in destructive potential."
That is "A coming storm...." rather than The Coming Storm
It's not necessarily the definitive version... and there do seem to be some false leads and/or blind alleys. Let's remember the Devs have form in this, and take great pleasure in misleading us indirectly - which I generally believe is a good thing and fun for them to do. Gets the speculative juices flowing and all that.
One of the big hints that there could be "Titan Involvement" is the fact that all the major names are taken, and yet I've never seen a titan name in game. That seems to be on all servers - and Prometheus clearly has some agenda here that's more than his stated aim. -
Quote:Actually, the in-game references to Atlas are about a HERO named Atlas, who took that name due to his great size and strength. He was active during WW2 and was a mortal.
I know... but it was too good an opportunity to pass up... and there's no reason why he couldn't have been playing at being a mortal... in a Christian Walkeresque way maybe. -
Quote:That comes later, if we humans lose!Personally, I'm of the opinion that if your general idea that the other Titans exist in the CoH universe, then they might actually be a part of whatever organization Prometheus claims to be from. It's possible that Prometheus may have decided that the Olympain Incarnates were sucking up too much of the collective human potential from the Well and tried to redistribute some to the rest of humanity, prompting Zeus to try and turn him concave.
I'm not sure where the part about the hawk eating Prometheus' liver every day would come in. -
I've heard rumours that the Coming Storm is the "Battalion" - but quite who, or what, this is, I've no idea. I suspect I'm not alone in that either.
But I may have inadvertently stumbled on something that either ties in with the Coming Storm or actually has the potential to BE the Coming Storm: The invasion of the Titans.
Titans as many of you may already know where the supernatural beings that fathered the gods and goddesses of ancient Greece. Perhaps the best known are Cronus, the father of Zeus - alongside Prometheus who gave fire to humanity, and Atlas, who holds up the Sky.
You might be familiar with Prometheus and almost certainly with Atlas, in game already. Atlas... there's a bit of a landmark to him in one of the minor zones in game I believe, and Prometheus appears somewhere too.
So... I wanted to make a new Titan Weapon character and so I googled a couple of links on Titans - I first learned of the Titans as a kid and that was a while ago so I wanted to recharge the old grey matter a bit. But what I noticed was that none of the main Titan names are available. That got me thinking a bit - and I tried them on several servers. None of them are available - and spelling variants are taken too. Not every one, but the majority.
Other connections that may be significant is that Prometheus is apparently helping humankind in Ouroboros - where we are told to prepare for this Coming Storm by Mender Silos.
Wild speculation? Maybe, but it could be a very interesting story: Titans, the original Incarnates from the dawn of time, are coming to the End of Time to destroy Silos and his forces and reclaim the Universe, and it's up to us to stop them or fall under their capricious sway.
Well it's a nice dream anyhow... -

Quote:I don't think I can express how much this bothers me as a customer.
I agree. There's a major disconnect between the Customer Service team and the main Customer Facing representative - however my gut instinct tells me this is a communication and quality issue - probably because the GMs cover all NCSoft games and Zwill has a much narrower focus on CoH. But, I'll bet anything you want that's a technical issue and relatively easily resolved. Questions is, how easily do they want to resolve it? -
My instinctive feeling is that the customer service reps we call GMs here are ace, but I've sometimes felt that there's a disconnect between what we type in petition and how they respond.
Some of the other replies to this thread make a lot more sense - in that they are tasked to respond to every petition in game live - a fact I was unaware of.
I guess that means by definition they don't get the meat of the petition - they just go in and ask what the problem is, which is fine, but if you've just typed it, then from the user POV slightly frustrating. However to mitigate that fact, the response times are wayyyyyyyyyyyyyy faster than before in my experience so the time spent in recounting the issue, isn't a huge problem. I guess what Dumpleberry is recounting is one of those issues where there's clearly a conduct issue, but it's very hard to demonstrate immediately. It's not like "Glowy broke - glowly no work when click" or "stuck in tree" - and requires a more informed and subtle response from the GM.
I've sent many many petitions over my time here and the only time I've ever had less than a perfect response was with a badge - but in all other cases I've felt that the GMs have bent over backwards to resolve my issue. Zwillinger, please pass my continued thanks to the CS team!
