  1. Thor, it's like... a freakin playground for geeks like us. It's just endless geekery and awesomeness... My friend literally ran into Joss Whedon on the floor while on her way to a Heroes panel.

I'm taking my guy for his first time. Couple pointers... for folks.

    1. Con Hotel Room rates start in January usually, you should be up at freakin 6AM to call in and HOPE you get a room. The majority of us just deal with getting normal hotel rates six to ten months in advance. Hotels sell out that quickly :/
    2. Comic Con is huge, don't plan to see all of the convention floor in one day. I remember when it was still basically ONE football field across... it is now four football fields across. Bring walking shoes.
    3. Don't waste your money on Con Food. The Gaslamp Quarter and further up on Broadway and F street I believe is the Horton Plaza, eats there are cheaper. There's always a grocery store to stock up on snackage, Ralphs to be exact.
    4. Have a gameplan. Nothing sucks worse than missing your fave artist signing or panels. Most of my friends and I plan out a few weeks before con what panels we want to attend and where we want to meet up.
    5. TXT Messaging is awesome for having to find people in a very noisy convention hall. Have a meetup point near the entrance of the hallways so if you get seperated, you know where you can find each other.
  2. Next year, finances allowing, I'll be heading out of state for conventions. Money's just been tight. So then, I must ask, what conventions DO you folks go to, so that I may lay waste to-- I mean, make sure I try and put them on my schedule.
  3. Ohh I never take my camera unless I go with a big group. I'm actually going for like, the first time in ten years, just for fun instead of working at a booth or table... so yeah. Your tube is going out tomorrow, by the bye, stuffed with stuff.

    Hey Soul...

I feel you. I do. I've been in a situation where I was on a job where the art director was a good guy, but a really bad businessman. Because he was a friend, we reconciled, but I'm not sure I'd direct any of my friends to work with him. I feel like this is the same situation. Gill may be a great guy, but not every artist is a good at business. And they shouldn't be. Taking care of the business side of things is stressful. That's why a lot of artists I know have someone else who is business oriented handle that side of things. Otherwise it ends up in lots, if not LOADS of stress.

It takes awhile for any artist to know how much they can handle at one time. I had four jobs on my plate earlier this year and I knew, I KNEW taking that fourth job, I'd be overloaded. But my friend (not the one previously mentioned) was in a dire spot, and so I helped him out. I wouldn't have traded the chaos and stress for the world because it was an awesome project, but after that, I made a long list of things I would and wouldn't do with my artistic career so I wouldn't end up stressing out like I had.

With commissions, it's tempting to take on more than you can chew, and I've been guilty of it in the past. I think Gill got caught up in the mentality of taking on new orders while thinking he could keep going through his queue. The whole, "Well I'm really really full...but just one more bite wont hurt..."

Life happens. A chemical burn to the lungs is nasty, and I don't want to even think what that must have been like going through. I will say that I am glad that Gill isn't taking on new orders or deposits from the looks of things. As for this thread, I still believe that it is viable, as it's only been what? Two, three days since Gill posted.

I vote this thread be kept alive for the next coming weeks so people have a place to look, to know what's going on, what's happened in the past, and if they need help, that we're all here for them.

Juggy, you did a damn good job with this thread, and to everyone who lent their help, it's one of the reasons I came back to post. So thank you. This community rocks.
  5. This is a lil different for me, since I normally take Con Sketches AT the show, but I don't have a table or booth this year. HOWEVER, I'd still like to do Con Sketches. So here's the deal. I'm doing inked and colored pieces, for a handy dandy sum that you can find by: clicking here

Single characters, preferabley bust or waist up shots if you have a complicated piece you want done.

I will do these sketches BEFOREhand, and you will receive your piece at Con. Upon receipt of payment I will hand out my cell phone number to folks so that we can meet up. Now here's the only problem. I will ONLY be at the convention on Saturday and Sunday.

Pre-arranging a meeting point would be perfect for all parties involved. I'm not very mobile, so let's say you're at the end of one hall and I'm at the end of the other, please expect to meet up somewhere in the middle. Perfect meeting points would be: Bud Plant Booth, nearest the hallway doors.

I will edit this with examples when I have a moment, today's been busy but I wanted to let folks know

Thanks guys! I'm hoping to raise enough to cover the cost of my hotel room.

    MMO ART?

I'm going to take a wild guess and say that MMO art saw both this thread and the satisfaction thread, and between the two, scrambled to get this reboot page up. The gallery isn't even up. I remember seeing the Synchotron piece before, and the WIP that they have up currently on the front page. Didn't they do this with the last reboot about a year ago as well? The promises for refunds and then no mailing after that?

I hope they get back on their feet this time :/ Here's hoping. *crosses fingers*

Regardless of what Hyper will be doing, I will still be finishing the Fallen Skye piece for her. Cuz that's how I roll.

    Plasmastream - finished...

    White Peregrine - coloring currently

Vort, please consider your commission paid in full. I'll be getting your pencils to you ASAP.
  9. Most sculptors out there have traditional foundational skills in which they utilize to create their pieces. Most of them will draw out what they want to do first before they actually sculpt. And most painters could also sculpt. Having gone to a school where the finearts department had you do both, I've got fairly good evidence for that.

Most good 3D instructors will tell you to have good foundational skills in 2D before going to 3D, because in order to understand 3D you need to understand how the real life translates from physical article to flat piece of paper.
  10. Very charming faces. I actually prefer the sketch to the cleaned up piece though.
  11. All the pieces I saw of Thor and Sassy were, for the most part, pretty smexy. So I went for comedy...

  12. I had a lot of fun on the piece Larissa, and if you ever want it painted, just uh, lemme know
  13. You people are weird. XD
  14. Sorry, I'm cranky today ;_; Even after Sin brought home cookies. It's just one of those days.
  15. Yer incorrigible.... :P

Would you mind me putting up the extras online BEFORE you receive them or do you want to be surprised?
  16. [ QUOTE ]
Well, yes and no. Art is weird. It's one product that you can buy and still no own. It's always seemed strange to me, because if you'd hire someone to paint in your house, you still own it, but if you hire someone to paint your character, you don't really own it.

It's probably best to ask ahead of time about usage rights so things don't get sideways. If you want all rights to the piece, I'd say so ahead of time in the commissioning process.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Well, I don't think painting a house and painting your character isn't a great analogy but lemme work with it.

You own the house you're painting. It's already there. It's pre-existing. You own the documentation that provides that you have the rights to that house and the property.

The piece of art you buy, it's up to the artist to come up with something from nothing. They offer their services, yes, but the artwork is theirs from the get go until they deem it otherwise.

So yes, you can be angry, but it's within the artist's rights as to what they want their work to be displayed and how.

    Nadya... go here: http://calgarydollars.ca/form/artistrelease.html

This is an artist release form. Have this artist SIGN that, but you'll obviously want to make it as your own and take out Calgary Dollars XD. If he says he wants more moolah for it, I'd say $20.00 to release the rights for a commissioned piece of art is standard, but I CAN look it up in my GAG book (Graphic Arts Guild).
  17. I'm sorry I'm so Disney. *headdesk*
  18. So thaaaat's where you've been.

    ....traitor.
  19. [ QUOTE ]
But this person, AFTER the work was done, said I couldn't post it, even if I paid for the work and have rights to the character being portrayed in the work.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Okay, I spell that sorta stuff out beforehand. Sadly, the legal ball falls in the artists court. You may have paid for a piece of artwork, but unless you've bought the rights to it (by which I mean the artist's release form in the last post) you're stuck. :/

Did they give you any specific reason why they didn't want it displayed? It seems surreal to me that an artist would do a piece but not want to display it.
  20. It's a celebration of hitting a certain amount of pageviews. I don't really care about pageviews except that once in awhile, hitting a milestone makes me feel like giving away free art :P
  21. Larissa has been incredibley patient waiting for this.... A kiriban image

    http://grumpygoat.deviantart.com/art...riban-91799494

Back to commissions and certain extras for certain art collectors.
  22. Legally, unless the artist has the commissioner sign an Artist Release Form (found on the Graphic Artists Guild online, fairly sure), then technically, LEGALLY they cannot use the artwork anywhere. Whether or not most of us commissionable artists do that? Nope. I specifically state that reposting the work, unaltered, is fine by me, but if you want to crop or alter, just ask. It's pretty lenient.

I'm echoing Soul Train, WP where are ya buddy? D:

I've got approval from Hyper on the pencils for her piece, so I'm moving foward with that one in about a weeks time.
  24. This piece makes me ANGREH.

Angreh cuz we don't have this kinda stuff to actually wear ;_; I want cool 18th century powder wigs, curls, and dresses damnit! And vests for men! *froths at the mouth*

    Congrats on a lovely piece
