  1. Oh might as well add this. This is an in progress piece....

When I stayed over at Elysienne's place while in England, I figured giving him a painting in return for his hospitality would be ya know, cool....

    http://www.dementedhero.com/gallery/...ysienne?full=1

Ely's a fantastic host. And terribley cute.
  2. I look nothing like either Sayterra or Ravendown. Oh well! XD
  3. NO! NO PANTS FOR ROWR! DOWN WITH PANTS!

    Pants are evil!
  4. Ha! Thanks Graver...and everyone :3 My roomies and I are currently in search mode for a place, and we may have found one. We'll hopefully be sealing the deal tomorrow, so juju would be appreciated :3

WP and Bayani should be receiving sketches soon... Rowr should have paints soon...well repaints that is... Slowly workin down the list.
  5. Arr! Goat's going to be homeless in less than a month's time. Skeek! So I'm trying to rush around and find a place with my roomies (oh so fun. Scary places we've seen)...

    So anyways! ART.

Thor's Rough. REALLY rough. I ran out of space with the paper 14x17 to get it all done, so I'll be redoing the sketch digitally with Painter before taking it to Illustrator. Huzzah!
  6. Haaaaaaaaaands. I love the hands. Verra nice :3
  7. Actually I have stuff for you too WP.... I hafta go look at a house, but I'll scan it upon returning. TA's sketch will get posted shortly. The ZOMG rough wild one...but its easier for me to be wild and loose and then clean it up XD
  8. *consumes Graver's latest piece*

    Mmm...tasty tasty inspiration.

    Photoshop help

Burn, Dodge, and Smear... the enemies...the mortal foes of all photoshop artists. Really. Truly.

    Learn color. Traditional first...then digital.

It's hard, but its worth it.

I promise I'll add some full length explanation tomorrow that will make PMD's head spin... Or well, at least he'll pat me on the head and say something akin to "Silly Say...tricks are for kids..."

    Yeah. I need sleep XD...
  10. Actually Howl's was a book first before Miyazaki turned it into an awesome freaking movie. The name is an homage yarr
  11. Unfortunately these aren't funny ha ha or funny uh oh... These were illustrations done for a story written by the almighty HEXESS and I...

So what happens when one fire imp suddenly gains sentience? Lemme get all sentimental and mushy with a quote from the story:

    An impossibility erased by love...

  12. I make my own brushes and edit available brushes... so I'm not much help

I normally play with shape dynamics and opacity on actual brushes, and make my own for shading.

I also jump between Photoshop and Painter...
  13. Really appreciate the welcome back XD

I lied... no photos tonight. Got in too late. Instead, I hope to appease the masses with a few silly sketches and a tiny thumbnail for Bayani.

Drawings from Schiphol, Amsterdam's airport. Leaving within hours of the bombs being found in London was certainly...interesting.

Bayani... doodled on the plane back to LAX. Longest.flight.ever.

I ended up painting several postcards for friends, including Hexess, epicenter of the Dauntless Reverie. Those that didn't get painted cards got regular postcards. I'll have to scan one of the postcards I saved for myself.

Basically, I flew out of Los Angeles on July 24th and arrived July 25th in the afternoon in Amsterdam. It was disturbingly warm there. Within the past two and a half decades of traveling there, the last ten years have seen a striking increase in hot summers and unusual winters. Thanks global warming!

So I was given a day to recoup and get over jetlag before I hopped a train, then a plane to Liverpool to visit fellow Dauntless Reverie member: The Elysienne!

Fantastic host in a fantastic town. Ely took me on a tour of his side of the world, showing me his parks, local war memorials, and such. Absolutely beautiful and peaceful place to live. The sea so close, lots of green. Yeah, I could see myself living there for a spell, if only to do watercolor paintings in new places every day for a year. There's enough to paint and see...

First night was spent drinking at a local dive. There had been no way to reach 'mommagoat' in Holland, so we put it off til the next day. That was, until the British Police come knocking on Ely's door the next day. Now, the British police are nice folks, and these two looked very similar to Laurel and Hardy. So I will refer to them as such from now on.

    Officer Laurel: Are you...Ely?
    Ely: Uh... I... yes.
Officer Hardy: Is there a California Dutch girl by the name of Say staying with you??
Ely breaks into laughter and calls out to me in the kitchen: Say! Come tell the police I didn't strangle you in your sleep!

The officers wait and I skitter down the stairs with the cell phone in hand. We'd been trying EVERY combination to get through to my aunt and uncle's place, where my mother was staying.

Upon seeing me, the officers broke into laughter. Paranoid Mom Syndrome. They'd obviously had this happen before. Great guys, they helped me find out that I was simply dialing the incorrect country code, and after things were sorted out with family, they bid me adieu.

    Tomorrow: Into the City
  14. Vort, it's apparently waiting at the post office... I hope. I'll be picking it up tomorrow

    Photos and sketches tomorrow.
  15. Odd, a few entries got deleted. Anyways, I'm back and will have new art and photos from abroad to show.

Have fun on your trip Sayterra. Where are you going?

    [/ QUOTE ]

I will be in Holland for two and a half weeks, and a half week in England with friends. Holland is where my family's from, so when we miss them terribley, we visit.

The only bad thing about this is that folks its ya know, a vacation. It's really just me in a different house, in a slightly different location in the world without much net access. So I'll focus on painting like I normally do when I'm there, and taking care of the kids.

BUT... England is new for me, so I'll have stories from there, and photos. My friend is taking me to Stonehenge :3
  17. Arr.

Sorry I've been absent as of recently, I'm running around getting things together before I go overseas for a few weeks. All commissions will have to be put on hold for that time period.

I will be gone from July 23th through August 11th.

TA, I'll be getting you some pencils shortly...

Bayani, White Peregrine, you'll be receiving preliminary sketches shortly.

I want to thank everyone for their support, you guys all rock. And whilst abroad, I will be spending my time getting back to my roots of plein air watercolor landscapes, photography, still lifes, and comics.

    <3 and stuff,

  18. Pure tracing is bad. HOWEVER, tracing paper is GOOD.

For character design, a great way of understanding another artist's style, is to pull out the tracing paper (dun dun dun) but not to trace with it.

But Say! It says TRACING paper, should I not trace?

Oh ho, no my dear young artist. Its name is deceiving!

Taking a prismacolor black pencil, OR a pen of some sort, we were taught to break down the art into simple shapes, to see where and how the lines worked.

They weren't supposed to LOOK like the art, it was an exercise in how to divulge information from a piece. The same can be done with anatomical studies.

I spent hours copying Claire Wendling's stuff in my own sketchbook.

I guess the only thing missing from this discussion is something pretty darned simple:

    1. If you do study from someone elses work and POST it, give credit where credit is due.

    2. Don't claim it as your own work.

So...yeah. I do not like line for line tracing. But I <3 design pull-a-partingness...

    Sleep for Goat!

In addition to these fine Eisner books (Comics and Sequential Art is the BIBLE for storytelling) you also might want to check out Understanding Comics by Scott McCloud. It's a little more general than Eisner's books, a little more philosophical, but I think it makes a great complement to Eisner.

What he said. Another great way to learn about visual storytelling is via storyboarding and film books. The first is Setting up Your Shots by Jeremy Vineyard. The next is the Five C's of Cinematography by Joseph V. Mascelli.

Oddly enough, I think continuity in comics is overlooked, studying film has a tendency to help broaden horizons.

    http://www.dementedhero.com

My professional site needs a bit of cleaning up before I post it publically here.
  22. Commissioned art by term, means art that is requested for and paid for.
  23. Ah ha ha ha... the aquarium sketch made my DAY! XD
