Read it. Did it several times. Did HijackThis and CoH helper. Did the whole song and dance routine. Last time I did it on here, I got no response. Last time I e-mailed customer support with this information, they made me jump through seemingly endless loops, and it wasn't satisfactory. Should I do it all one more time?

Before making this thread, I've run my desktop through numerous diagnostic tools (including ones recommended in this forum section, and have taken my PC to the computer repair store three times since December 16, 2010. I have had my power supply and video card replaced, spent over $500 in part and labor cost. I have no virus/malware issues, my hard drive is at 100% health (37 degrees Celsius, which is normal), I have no memory problems. I have performed video card and memory stress tests.

Every time I play CoH, I'm on a team, and every team player is using different powers all at the same time (i.e. Plant/Kin tentacle powers, which I often see before I crash), my computer crashes, screen turns black, and a blue screen error appears with the IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL error. As I've learned from previous experiences regarding this error, this problem is commonly associated with memory issues. I have run memtest86 and additional memory stress tests, and my PC passed with flying colors.
I also know that my case gathers dust, and I need to clean it regularly, which I do. Turns out, the case was recently cleaned. Also, if dust was an issue, it would also impair my performance in other games and applications beside CoH. Turns out, I haven't had any problems with any other games or applications.
After dealing with CoH problems for about five months now, this is getting very frustrating.
Are there any solutions? -
My proposal is to eliminate the Feedback/Suggestion option on the Support window and, instead, provide text that reads under the body text box, "If you have any suggestions and feedback for the game, please post on the forums at http://boards.cityofheroes.com," and clicking on that link opens up your default browser.
In reality, every petition is sent to CoH technical support. Game moderators, not developers or game support, receive whatever is sent via the petition window so it's a little confusing to have "Feedback/Suggestions" as an option. -
For the past several hours, I've had trouble with my CoH updater because of this patch.
After it verifies image and goes to fixing files -- and it seems just to crap out at piggs/texVWorldBases2.pigg, then it gives me an application error: "The instruction at "0x004bcfc2" referenced memory at "0x067b3000." The memory could not be written."
After watching 2-3 hours for this patch to be fully applied and then this happens... it's agitating.
I tried redownloading Cohupdater.exe, and that didn't work. I tried re-installing CoH. Didn't work. It's a bust. What should I do? -
For the record, I only compared CoX to WoW on a very superficial level as far as simply seeing active bodies around you while you're playing. That's all.
Truth be told, I like CoX's instanced mission system a lot. No problems here.
Quote:It takes a while for people of lower levels to travel from one spot to another so it's natural to expect people to trek from point A to point B. Once they reach point B (the mission), they disappear. You're most certainly right about that. However, the fact remains. I do not see a lot of people traveling from place to place.Just to put it in perspective for you: Every time you entered a mission door, anyone looking for people would no longer see YOU either. Since people spend a lot of time running missions, that's a lot of time they aren't visible in the city zones at large.
On a side note, my only suggestion to CoX developers is to let players know, when they just started the game, that there are global channels full of people who are looking for missions, teams etc. That way, new players will not be wandering around aimlessly or doing solo missions ad nauseum like I did for about a week and a half.
EDIT: Yes, I have quite a few friends and global friends already. I'm always looking for people! -
Just wanted to report back and thank everyone, once again, for the wonderful advice. I played about 5-6 hours worth of CoH and every moment of it was full of back-to-back missions. It was much more enjoyable. I joined the Protector Vigilance global channel, sought teams and jumped right in naturally.
I do know about forming teams, but the only reason I don't do it often is primarily due to laziness, but I have formed teams quite a few times in CoH.
However, I just wanted to mention to Ironblade that you're right, not seeing a bunch of people on the streets is simply the nature of the game (for all the reasons you mentioned). However, I have to say that I've frequently visited all the places you mentioned and I don't see a lot of people there... well, except for city hall, of course (i.e. city hall in Atlas Park).
I've been playing the game for about two weeks now and once I play it some more, I'll see what you see, Ironblade. Until then, I'm not seeing it, but I'll keep looking. -
This is probably the most enlightening advice I've received so far. Thank you!

Quote:Actually, I have other characters on other servers and I've had the same problem; the only reason I'm on Protector is that I started my trial account on that server. What's funny is, I've heard the same thing said by someone who had similar difficulties playing on a low pop server (Fenris) of a game that is by no means 'not so popular anymore' (you know which one I'm referring to). Your difficulty does not denote anything but your own difficulty. Anyone can tell you teams are probably plentiful all day and night on Virtue and Freedom. Not so much on Protector or Victory, for example.
Also, I've played World of Warcraft (on a trial basis, not full account and I'm not a WoW addict) a couple of times and every town was full of people jumping and walking all over the place. When I go through CoH on all the servers, I rarely see another player on patrol or moving out and about. I just see a lot of NPCs that say, "Nice day, isn't it?"
Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying the game is unpopular because I'm personally having a problem with it. I'm just saying it as an observation. I want the game to be more... active. I can see why me saying the game is not popular can be construed as insulting or narrow-minded. -
Quote:Oh, nice. Haven't even considered the global channels. I'll definitely give it a try.Have you joined any of Protector's global channels? Jello Shooters, Protector Vigilance, Protector Watch, Protector TFs are all good places to start.
I just finished an 8 man Manticore (started about 11 am Pacific time) and moving on to a Citadel tf which looks like it'll also fill. And that's at a pretty slow time. -
I've spent about a week looking at numerous leveling guides. Many leveling guides insist that people need to assemble teams to go on several missions -- and it's true that leveling up is faster when you're in a team. The problem, however, is finding one on relatively unpopular servers like Protector.
People who have lamented about the game's slow pace of leveling solo have received responses from people who say things like, "Finding a team depends on the time of day (i.e. people come home from work in the evenings and are mostly available on the weekends)," and "Broadcast the letters 'lft' in popular areas," but I've pretty much tried everything. The best I could find are teams that pop on maybe once every two days -- and I'll tag along with them for a few hours, go up about 1-2 levels and then people log off for bed.
It's almost as if the game is more enjoyable to play in the evenings.
Is there any database, any place online I could post about looking for teams?
It's a shame that this great game isn't so popular anymore.
