    Virtue problems?

At least we looked good while getting our a$$es kicked. And the BAF was fun.

    Peace, Jade River.

PS: Since when is a$$ blocked?

PPS: Maybe good news - I know there were three or four servers down, but we're the only one now, plus two Unknowns. Light on the horizon?
  2. Really hoping this isn't the end for Virtue (and the others). Virtue is my home, and most of my toons/friends are here. I still have a few on Union, but I transferred most of them here in the last few weeks. Since the announcement, I'm seeing the same faces over and over and I don't want to lose those friends yet. I know that Hit_Streak comes into the game, but I don't know what's involved in getting them back up or how much access they need/have. I just hope to Helle that it gets fixed, I was not prepared to lose the game today. This utterly locks.

I went to Union and broadcasted on the Request channel to see if any of the Admins were about. No response (even from the players). Maybe we can try announcing on other servers as well and hopefully get lucky.

    Peace, Jade River.

WOO! Servers back UP. You rock Devs/Techs/Folks. xox

    Virtue problems?

I also got mapserved and can't get onto Virtue. The server status page might be correct, I can get into Union. This is terrible.

    Peace.
  4. Hi. The Virtue server (along with some others) went down around 18:20 EST. Does anybody know if there are devs enough to bring them back up and/or if they're checking in regularly? Having until November 30th is nowhere enough time to explore everything I haven't yet done in the game, but if the servers stay down from tonight... There are just no words.

    Peace, Jade Rivers.
  5. Bookmarked! Will get to this soon, thanks for all the links. I'll go wherever the game goes. It would be awesome if it were picked up. It's too good a game not to be, especially with all of us willing to continue subscribing.

    Peace, Sol.

Most motherboards are 8.5" wide so the 9800GT isn't that much longer, there are much higher end cards that are much longer. As for the card's height that's a standard height card (as oppose to a low-profile card that could be used in a slimline case).

As for performance it should be able to handle minimal Ultramode settings (which is so pretty) at over 30FPS for under 1.5 megapixel resolutions (not 1920x1080).

Building a computer for $400-500 is tough. DIY isn't really about being cheaper than a store bought, it's more about having the power to allocate the money on the parts you care about.

As for a power supply, it is one of the items you should not go cheap on, or at least too cheap. This Corsair PSU is a respected model that's currently on sale for only $30 after rebate and promo code. It has 28 amps at 12 volts. This Antec one is a bit more expensive (on sale but no rebate) for $50 and can put out 32 amps at 12 volts. Oh, if you don't know, the reason that video card manufactures mention the amps at 12 volts is because; A) older PSUs may have a total output of over 400 watts but only have 18 amps available at 12 volts and B) the CPU and video card account for 80% or so of the watts used at 12 volts so you need to be sure the 12 volt side of the PSU can cover that.

You can get a nice basic Mid Tower ATX case for under $50. They may not be as easy to work in and have little niceties as the $75 cases but with your budget every $ counts. Rosewill has a nice $50-60 case (depending if it's on sale). Antec has their basic gamer case in that price range as well.

If you are able to salvage the hard drive and optical drive (if they aren't SATA you may have a problem reusing them, older PATA [ribbon cable] interfaces have been phased out) then all that's left is memory, the motherboard and CPU. Intel's Socket 1155 Sandy Bridge/Ivy Bridge CPUs are extremely game friendly, even the sub $100 CPUs since Intel finally came up with a way to lock down CPU and memory clock speed without the need to excessively damage the CPU by cutting it's memory cache to extremely low amounts to limit performance. AMD use to be able to hold on to the inexpensive side of DIY but the Sandy Bridge base "Pentium"s (Intel couldn't give up the name) can now match their prices while giving a higher performance upgrade path.

DDR3 memory is extremely cheap right now with a pair of 2GB DDR3-1333 memory (4GB in total) for less than $25. If you aren't using a 64-bit OS then any more than 4GB is pointless. Note than an OEM copy of 64-bit Win 7 is around $110, a pretty big chunk of such a small budget.

For a motherboard I would suggest one based on the Z77 chipset. They start, for an well thought of manufacturer, around $120-130 range. Expensive, relatively speaking, but provides a CPU/memory upgrade path that the less expensive H7x based motherboards can't provide.
First I'd like to begin by saying that Love is a strong word, but just short of that is YOU. Second, you're awesome, let's have bunnies. Okay, tonight has been a big learning curve and I had a LOT of catching up to do (you mean MoBo isn't some kind of new Android device?). My guy told me about NewEgg tonight which is where I first found the card you also ended up linking to (and gracias for the info, pretty awesome website). My biggest concern aside from playing UM on CoH is the ability to upgrade. Thank you for spelling out some of what you wrote below. So far I've settled on this configuration although I'm running low on the $ side of things (I'm going to try to keep the basic hardware under $400 and will somehow have to find more "mad" money for tax/delivery/warranties, etc.):

Graphics Card: $59.99 EVGA Nvidia GeForce 9800 GT. Awesome all the way around for what I can afford, what I'm used to and what it can do. I can totally believe how pretty even the low end of Ultra will be. I'm all about The Shiney (I actually have a Spines/Regen called Chy'nee for "Shiny-Pointy").

Case: $42.49 LOGISys Red Mid-Tower. Can't help myself, it's shiny and has a cheesy little 480W power supply in it although I will have to replace it for lack of cables and I can't find the Amperage. Still looking for the dimensions as well. The case itself is a bit tight, but I can make it work (I was never spoiled by the side-mounting hard drives or what-not). I'd like to get this case.
I checked out the two power supplies you linked to. I know the EVGA wants 400W for idling and I don't know if a PS < 500W can handle it. Do you think it's worth it to pay a little more, to keep the extra amperage (12V, 26A) but aim for 500W or higher?
Power Supply: $54.99 Rosewill Green Series 530W (12V, 41A). Need to check the PS dimensions in the tower. Or find another groovy case sans supply.

Motherboard: $130.99 MSI Z77A-G45 (LGA 1155) Intel Z77. You were right about the price. It's a pretty decent board and it has an extra 2 slots for memory... anything less than 4 memory slots is insane. Same with the extra PCI Express slotting. I don't get this one-only slot.

RAM: $30.00 or $47.99 Corsair Vengeance 4GB (It's $30 for one 4GB chip or only another $17 to add a second one). Before tonight, I didn't know about the memory limitations for 32-bit Windows OS's so I'll have to decide if I'm going to pick up the second one now.

    Rebates: $20 plus

I have a 500GB USB HD that I am cheesily going to use as the default drive if the board's BIOS supports booting from a USB drive. All my other drives use the ribbon cables. Cheating, but if it lets me I'm going to do it until I can afford an SSD (also new to me) or a new SATA drive. I found a great deal for a Seagate 3 Terrabyte External drive (2.0 USB) for $130 but I can't afford to pick it up at the moment. You should check it out. Either way, I want to install a dual-boot Linux/Win 7 system. I received a free Windows 7 disc with my Acer Aspire - I'm assuming it's 32-bit but I may have requested the 64-bit way back when. Having this will save me some money. I might be installing Mint Linux because it's green, shiny and user-friendly. I'm also going with the on-board sound for now with my current speakers. If it means waiting for a few better deals, I can keep using the old "minimum" PC.

Already Own: Flat Screen (compatible w/ card), Keyboard, Mouse, etc. Need a webcam and a DVD-RW.

Okay. I'm not done searching, but I'm done for now. Any more advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for all the help.

    Peace, Sol Kenaz.
  7. Hey. I am putting together a brand new system, but with a limited income. I am sorely behind in new technologies, having started roughly around !Pong! and ending up in the 90s. Basically I'm wandering around wide-eyed while nodding and smiling at the new shiny tech and terminology (eyes glossing over). So, help?

I'll be building it from the ground up. I found a great deal for a new EVGA "01G-P3-N988-TR" GeForce 9800 GT HDMI 1GB 256-bit DDR3 (PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support) video card. Yes that was copy/pasted. EVGA repackages/overclocks the NVidia cards using NVidia technology. I want to make doubly sure that this is compatible with the game (but I have a bit of an energy/ability problem so my researching is less great). I am unsure whether this model is the one you've listed below as being "entry level" for playing in Ultra Mode. I haven't yet had that pleasure, so I'd be happy with anything approximating UM for CoH. My imploded laptop could only play recommended and the older PC I'm using is minimum with some effects turned up.

I'm looking for a power supply higher than the 400 this card requires (12 volt with 26 amps +). Also, the card is 9" x 4.3" w/ fan. Is this common? Seems a bit monstrously sized to me. Do standard cases (w/ the extra bays) fit this? I haven't chosen the motherboard or ANY of the other hardware yet, so no - I don't know the rest of the specs yet. I've had a lot of ASUS boards with AMD Chipsets, which I find to be groovy. I'd like to avoid Celerons. They may have updated their hardware, but my memory banks have NOT.

I'm building a new-ish PC to replace the laptop and my primary purpose is gaming & graphics and the ability to play CoH on higher settings (and not be left in the dust as they update). The card I found is ridiculously cheap, comes with 2 years parts & labour warranty and was rated high amongst cards that cost considerably more.

I've been an ATI woman forever and although I love the RagePro's/Radeon's, I really wanted to try out NVidia (as well as enjoying the NVidia graphics updates vs. ATI's "recently" faulty drivers). Can anyone confirm that this card (on its own merits) can play the game, and well? (Definition of Well: better than what I have access to now... seriously; I don't ask for much). Or even what to expect. My main barrier in creating a new system is building something that'll play CoH nicely but not leave me looking at an empty fridge for the new few months. I've only got $400 to $500 magick money at most (excluding the monitor, peripherals and HD). I'm prepared to spend more on the motherboard. The card with the warranty is less than $100 before rebate. Building a system from scratch costs markedly more than I remember it costing vs. a pre-built system. Bastards!

I'd like to get any info anyone has ASAP, so I can buy this card while it's still at the advertised price. I'll also take any suggestions on what to look for/avoid in parts (even the obvious). Example: Cap'n, upcoming Trident reefs to the left, hard starboard to port! Cap'n, avoid the DDR2 drones to the right! Bee-dee-bee-boop! Etc. Etc. Thank you for generating this list!

    Peace, Sol Kenaz.

^The 8800 GT and 9800 GT are the entry level models. They both did have a 1gb model made, but I think practical performance is going to place these cards closer to the 1280*720 resolution mark for reliable performance.
  8. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I was trying to find help in the Help channel around suggestions for my Empathy/Earth defender. I had currently set the F1-F8 keys to heal teammates which was very clunky and left me having to bind the rest of the Empathy powers to other keys. Some awesome person in the game told me about the Pop Menus and I found your thread in the forums.

I'm about to try out the .mnu file I created using the Numpad keys instead and just downloaded and "installed" the Classic Badge Reporter. As a badger, this is awesome. If it still works, I'll try the extended version next. Thanks for the many hours you put into this and happy gaming! 1000+ Internets, or whatever the kids are saying nowadays.

    Peace, Sol.

EDIT: Badge Reporter working correctly, just hunted down the updated version for Help and the Extended version. Thanks!
  9. I've been able to copy my toons successfully over to the Training Room. Thank you for fixing this.

    Peace, Sol Kenaz.
  10. I'm fairly new to CoH, but perhaps if everyone from EU and NA servers submitted daily bug reports until it actually got some attention. A lot of games don't provide "test" servers as they do here, but - since they do offer it - I believe it's their job to make it functional. There are user messages going back to February, and that's without really searching. It's very frustrating.

Yesterday or the day before I tried again to copy three characters over to the PTS. When I reloaded, it said the copy was in progress for each. When I checked back later, it had apparently finished but again - nothing showed up on the PTS. I also got an "invalid server" error message the first time I reloaded the page after copying the toons (from Virtue).

    Peace, Kenaz.
  11. I also copied a toon over more than 24 hours ago, and it is still not there. I have a level 44 to level up and can't do it until I try some of her powers out. So no transfer, no levelling up. Has anybody heard from the devs, etc. that they're aware of the problem? I'm new to the game, so still don't know who we'd send a bug report to.

    Peace, Kenaz.

Later: Come to think of it, I tried copying over a toon a few times last week (on both the Test server & Rogue) and she still hasn't arrived. I had to create her from scratch.
  12. I'm new to CoH, but here's my screen so far. I keep the map in the upper left when I need it.

    Peace, RainbowSerpent.
