  1. I wonder how many RP'ers will have to get Handwavium-plated Retcons for their characters now?
  2. "Corp is mother, Corp is father."

I demand a Lyta Alexander tribute! Or at least a Pat Tallman one.

    Mmmm.... Pat Tallman...
  3. My searching is poor, so forgive me if I'm reposting something that's known. I didn't see it in known issues, either.

I did the new Positron with some friends on Sunday. When we got to the last mission we kept getting killed in City Hall's lobby area. Anyhow, I noticed I had Hyperphase, so after we reassembled for the nth time I went in, phased, and ran to the hallway/stairtop, drawing the Circle enemies with me.

The cutscene triggered, and my character was the only one that appeared out of our team of eight.

When we finally made it down to the bottom of the stairs, there was only one shadow version of any of us (my character). We proceeded to wipe out the end of the mission.

We laughed, said, "well, that wasn't much of a fight but we earned it," and it got /bugged. I've not tried to repeat it yet. Not sure how "exploitable" this is, especially since getting through the front door is such a horrible pain anyhow, but still...

Yeah - it'd be a nice bit of personality for the game. I think putting your own characters into the cards would have to be an update, though.
  6. Bit of a mix for me, really. Usually when I allow RP/concepts to dictate a build, I usually have some other way I want them to be effective. My Energy/Energy blaster is an awesome soft-control character, for instance. Presence Pool, a variety of Knockdown powers, Stun-attacks, and four Chance to Hold IO's? Nice stuff.

My Illusion/Emp controller (my oldest character, dating back to near when I started COH) recently went from being more balanced to heavily Illusion. I omitted Heal Other and Resurrect because, well, the concept didn't work and I really do NOT enjoy being a heal-bot anymore. Given the folks I play with, the way COH works, etc., I'm free from being "guilted" into being a "OMGHEEELR!" Why did I take those powers (indeed, empathy?) before? Because I felt like I needed to be worth having in a group, and empathy was the key to that. Silly me. Silly, ignorant me.
  7. Just an odd idea I had as a friend of mine was asking about forms of PVP that don't involve combat. Aside from a rock-paper-scissors tournament or playing "tag" in the arena, I drew a blank.

I remember the old game (never really got to play it). All that work was put into creating it - the rules, the art, everything. It would be a bit of a shame if nothing else was done with it.

To be honest, even just having the cards in-game and letting the players keep track of the rules and such might be "good enough."

It could be an influence sink, too. Not a big one, obviously, but could be fun.

I am keeping in mind I've no idea what kind of legal or technical hurdles would have to be jumped, so I'm not going to assume its easy or easily doable.
  8. Maybe they should tap someone else other than the Rooster Teeth folks? The videos are very "them"-ish (or at least as I recall from Captain Amazing or whatever his name was).

Maybe Felicia Day and "The Guild"? Or Gabe & Tycho at Penny Arcade?

And, they did bring up the risk of getting your account stolen, which Samuriko did not. Neither brought up the possibility of your credit card being used without your consent afterwords.

It isn't just issues of game balance and gold farming, Smedley says. "We're seeing a lot of stolen credit cards. Say you buy gold from a service in China -- you may not know it's in China, but you give them your credit card and buy gold only once. They use these credit card numbers to set up new accounts in these games. They buy an EverQuest account key, farm for a month, and then charge it back to the stolen credit card."

And this isn't just damaging to the consumer. "What happens is that over time, as that rate of chargebacks rises, we start getting fined. We have been fined over a million dollars since June. That's not the chargebacks themselves -- just the chargeback fine. It's brutal; it's the dirty little secret of the industry."

When Nexon America opened in September of 2006, the company quickly found itself plagued by credit card fraud and hacking. Fraud isn’t easily predictable, Kim said; it grows, and with the inevitable delays involved in credit card transactions, it’s hard to know when it’s happening. On top of that, the added revenue clouds your ability to even identify it – on the surface, it just looks positive; more money coming in.

But each fraudulent transaction costs Nexon a fee - $20, plus the loss of whatever revenue would’ve been gained from the transaction. “Increased fraud levels can expel you from credit card transactions,” he warned. “Companies that I know of have been dealt fines in six figures.” As Kim said, fraud rates over 1% result in hits from the credit card companies. Nexon would require additional manpower to fix this.
I don't know about you, but if all that money (fines and chargebacks) could've gone into game development? That's a pretty compelling argument/reason for the community encourage everyone not to deal with RMT folks. You're literally hurting the game - not in a theoretical way that can be argued/dismissed (economy, game balance, etc).

edit: Hmm... maybe that'll be a good, player-run contest... make the best anti-RMT PSA, COH-style!

    Hate mail? What? That's awesome!

  10. Some call them RMTs. Gold-farmers. Power-leveling services.

Others call them Spammers. Account hackers. Bastards who caused the trial account limitations to be needed.

NCSoft got together with Rooster Teeth to make some PSA's about these jokers and Aion. But, really, its for all MMO's. Here are two videos that I've seen so far (thanks Massively).

Now, I personally think we're a creative bunch here, so tell me - what would COH anti-RMT PSA's look like? Consider this an invitation to guess, or even post one you made yourself!

  12. Thank you!

And the specs off the top of his head: 2.16 (2.2?) GHz Core2Duo, 2 GB RAM, 150GB HD. He thinks its got built-in ATI video, too. I'm happy, either way
  13. I've got a friend who might give me his old Mac Book Pro. As such, there's a good chance that I will install COH on there so I can have it on the go (no idea what the specs are, but since its a Pro, that means dedicated GPU to me versus Intel's horrible "why is this in a Mac" garbage from that era).

Now, this will not be my primary machine, but inspiration (and fun moments) can come at the drop of a hat as you know. As such:

    1. I know there are a lot of text files that COH stores on a computer these days for settings, AE stuff, etc. Can I just swap these over, easy-peasy like? I'm assuming so, but felt I'd better ask. Just copy and paste onto a flash drive, right? I seem to recall that anything done with demo-record doesn't generally like to be moved from one computer to another, though...

    2. Is there anything comperable to FRAPS for OSX? I like that for screenshots and to record in-game video. I am willing to pay a reasonable price for such a program.

    3. Can I switch in and out of COH as easily as I can in Windows? I can't think of a gaming session that lasted longer than 20 minutes where I didn't hit the Windows key to go to my internet browser, music player or something. COH always handled that well (better than anything else I know of) in that it'd keep running while I brought stuff up. Can I expect that level of cool with the OSX version? Not that I think OSX can't do it - I just don't know how CIDER will take to it.

    Anything else I should know?

I am not new to Macs or OSX (been in the newspaper industry for nearly 10 years), but I am new to them for gaming. I try to be as platform agnostic as possible, with only my gaming being platform-bound (consoles, Windows, etc). I might look into Boot Camp or Parallels to see if my other games can make the jump over as well - I have no problems with the idea of running Windows 7 (which I adore) on this machine, either part time or exclusively, but would prefer to run OSX on it predominantly since I've already got a wonderful W7 machine

    More OS's the merrier

Yeah. I hope that would also help motivate people to be extra nice and helpful to new folks (not that they aren't already).

    Agreed.

This has been suggested a great number of times, and will continue to be suggested into its implemented in a satisfactory manner. As a SG leader I want this. As a person with friends in-game I want this.

I can understand fraud concerns making NCSoft hesitant, but this would be a boon for the community. I strongly advocated making NCCoins an option (not the only option!) for payment, and, well, maybe I should be advocating that again. I realize that with only Exteel using them right now their appeal may well have diminished at NCSoft's level, but a lot of work went into getting that set up (background stuff, distribution, etc), so I think it would make sense to build off of that. I believe every NCSoft game has microtransactional items/services, that time cards can be used to buy NCCoins, etc., so to me it seems like a good step.

"Buy a costume pack for $9.99 or 1000 NCCoin!"

I would really like to PM/email my friends/SG mates with a code from a $10 card I bought at 7-11. Seriously. And honestly? The more people buy those, the more distributors would want to carry them. As Robert Garriot noted long ago, a retail presense is advertising that helps pay for itself.

There's a dead horse available for whipping if we need to make mention not everyone has a credit card, uses PayPal, is computer savvy, etc. This would be a good option.

Yeah - that's exactly what I wouldn't want to see.

Now, if the in-game reward benefitted the whole community?

"Hi! We've got a secret goal here at Paragon Studios! If you guys bring in (secret number) of your friends and new players into COH, and they stay for at least 3 months, we'll do the following..."

Maybe an extra Double-XP weekend, special events done "out of season", free tailor sessions, everyone gets a special badge, temp power, etc. Something fun and for everyone. Less chances of it getting ugly since its not individual based and it plays on this game's biggest strength that the devs can't program in - the community itself.

So long as the rewards aren't so good that it creates an ugly competition for new folks. I'd hate to see people fighting over such things. Yes, I know this sounds a bit irrational, but, well, people are people.

I would like to strongly voice my support of this. I know a lot of people, myself included, who do enjoy watching the previews for movies, and it really is an area where I've seen more and more non-movie advertising. It makes sense, its targeted, and its got the potential to reach potential players.

I don't know if there's enough time to buy ad-time (much less create something) for Iron Man II's release, but there are other movies coming out. Kick *** might've been a good opportunity as well.

EDIT: I don't know if there's another Going Rogue trailer in the works or not, but if there is, it needs to start making rounds somewhere! I'm not sure if the current one would work or not - no gameplay footage included as far as I can recall.

In all honesty, I could see this causing a loss in subscriptions, not a gain!
  20. Maybe a quiz for Facebook and other social networks? Tell us about the way you want to play and we'll tell you why COH might be worth trying? It would have to be somewhat Bartle-ish, I think, but its an idea. Can't be any worse than Mafia invitations
  21. Oh, and maybe having a person who can regular outside forums who can (appropriately) pimp COH, pass out trial codes and the like might not be horrible. Granted, this is skirting close to astro-turfing, but if its done in an open (or not obnoxious) manner it could be helpful.

Actually - could we get the novels and comics on Hulu, Amazon, etc., in digital format? They're out of print, but it might be something interesting to have available for folks to see, read, etc. Generate some conversation. Also, with the new Iron Man coming out, there might be more interest in hero stuff in general, so if someone searches for Iron Man/Iron Man 2 and having Amazon bring up City of Heroes (comics, novels or games) might be nice.
  23. Oh, and before I forget: no (direct) digs at the competition. Classy is good. By all means mention your strengths compared to their weaknesses, but never single them out or make it glaringly obvious who you're talking about. There are plenty of MMO conventions that can be noted without attacking anyone.

The Sidekick/exemplar/super-sidekick system has a lot of potential for social/casual players.*

The game not starting at level cap (a common feeling for many people in other games) is something that can be addressed.

The sameness of everyone (be it visually, build-wise, etc) is a great point to bring up.

The quality of microtransactions (account wide) is a good one.

Being able to actually talk with people cross-server/faction is a great one for many people.

edit: *This is one reason I stopped playing WOW. There was no reasonable way for me to play with friends when there was a significant level disparity!
