So. Basically, this whole thread was pointless? Well played I guess. You've got the upper hand on most of us; this game is where we have our "homes" in the virtual world. You know we probably won't unsub and loose our connection to our friends.
I gotta ask though, although I won't get a reply. Why did you even ask us what we wanted? Why didn't you just sneak in a paragraph in the terms of use as we log in and told us to sod off? It would've been more honest. Most people spent time and effort to make honest and constructive arguments because you asked. Something you, put frankly, just pissed on from on high.
I had hopes you'd actually listen. Yep, I fell for the pretty face of this thread. Am I going to unsub? Nope, all my online friends are in CoX. Well played, Paragon Studios. Well played. :/

Heeh, oh my I was grumpy last night.
The point I was trying to make was that as they released the global server they made this thread to start a discussion between us players, and -to me- it seemed like they were genuinely interested in what we wanted, and our opinions.
Now it's become apparent that they, at best, made the thread to have something to laugh about duirng their lunch breaks.
-That- was what my rant was about.
Am I still pissed off despite cold and headache being gone? You betcha. But I've given up, they don't care and I've better things to spend my frustration on (interpret that as you please). I'll be Q._EU or EU_Q. or EUQ. or Q.EU or YOURMOMMAQ.BOB or Chees- that's probably taken actually.
How about the global name rename tokens, are we atleast still getting those or are we being shafted on those as well now? (If not I'm gonna take back Quildo and take some comfort in that my rude name isn't ban- I shouldn't say that.) -

Quote:I'd love if you could talk to NA @Q. for me and see if they're around and if they're even open to change their global name. I tried, but trial accounts aren't allowed tells. (which is silly!) I'm happy to have the reply over a PM here, so we don't spam the open thread with private requests. One thing I'd like to see us concentrate more on is the idea that the players themselves might help our EU friends. Not only can we contact the holders of the global for you, but some of us would be willing to give up globals too.
For example, I won't give up my Jordan Yen global at all, but my second account doesn't matter to me nearly as much. When the merge happens, please feel free to PM me anytime. I, and many others like me, would be happy to help.
It's the kind of community we have after all -
Quote:Can only speak for myself here. But my global of @Q. is short and easy to remember. Ideally I'd skip the dot because it gets missed sometimes but the global name generator don't allow one letter. My argument here is that if I become @EUQ. (although, googling that made me smile) or @Q._EU.And... how is making a mental shift from "Slazenger" to "EUSlazenger" a problem, for you or anyone else on the EU servers? I seriously do not get this. Not picking on you specifically, but a great many folks have gone on about how this is going to "impact their online identity" to the extent that I'm glad I rarely drink soda at my desk. I hate having soda in my nose, anyway.
And honestly, this question is largely rhetorical. Any of you can try to explain it, but I'm highly unlikely to ever "get it" well enough to sympathize. At this stage, I'd be perfectly happy to go by @NABlood Speaker and let a potential @EUBlood Speaker keep the name, regardless of vet status. I honestly don't think any of my numerous server and global friends are going to be the least bit confused.
My problem is, this being provided that my NA counterpart gets to skip the NA in their name, people who might be talking to me, would direct their tells to him/her instead of me.
Sure, this'll only be for a while before they learn. And I'm gonna get used to it too, not saying I won't. It just seems like a lot of hassle, and I'm a creature of habit.
I'm completely -fine- with everyone getting the NA or EU on their name. -
Quote:Aha, thanksNo, they are the current data inside the collection. Programming speak.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Row_%28database%29While being swedish is awesome, it sometimes makes things a little complicated for me language-wise XD
Quote:Well thanks for making the developer's job harder. Also in what way did you preform the "check"? If you find a global name by checking character names, then that fails because not all character names are global names. For instance I know that "Snow Globe" the character only describes me on 2/11 servers, but "Snow Globe" is my global handle.
Quote:If you tried renaming your global handle (the only real way that I know of to test to see if a global name exists), then on the first "successful" change that wasn't taken you would be prevented from "testing" further as you can only preform a chat handle change once. -
Quote:I solved this by making a trial american server account. I -know- mine is taken, as is a massive list of other players. I'm not arguing over maybe loosing my name, I know I will.
Is there any way to check to see if the global name is taken on the other servers? (Ie. Can I check if an EU account has "my" global name or can a EU player check to see if a NA account has "their" global name?) If not, why not? It would be a basic database query and it would lessen any fear, uncertainty, or doubt. -
Having a blonde moment, I have no idea what they mean about character records. Probably a translation issue, being swedish and stuff, but aren't "records" a past-tense collection of data? If so, how is that a factor for future decisions?
-
Quote:That's all I wanted to hear. So long as you're willing to talk about it, and try to solve it to the best of your abilities, I'm willing to wait and see what happens. We've got many many days til this'll become reality. On this day of merriment, frivolity and green beer, I come to you bearing updates.
So let's get down to Brass Tax. We've been in serious discussion regarding many of the concerns expressed here. While some of our planning is still nascent, and as such I cannot go into a great deal of detail regarding our intent, I can state the following:
- To those stating we should not move forward with the Global Server Access plans, we cannot consider this. For a number of operational reasons, it's important that we move forward with Global Server Access.
- For those of you who have known conflicting @Global chat handles due to having accounts in both the NA and EU account database: We will be offering a reactivation weekend for those with inactive accounts on NA servers and active accounts on EU servers. This will coincide with the ability to rename your @Global chat handle prior to the database merge.
- We are currently investigating options to free up @Global chat handles off of inactive trial accounts. Please keep in mind, we will only do this if it does not present a considerable amount of risk.
We're going to make every effort we can to ensure that your in game persona remains as intact while presenting the least amount of risk to character records as possible. As someone who's job it is to manage online communities and provide a place for people to build relationships, I understand the importance of your virtual identity and the value you're placing on it.
Thanks -
Quote:Yeah, I'm in the same position. I'm called Q in RL by people who don't even -know- City of, or who frown when I say I'm a gamer and a faithful MMOer. In addition I'm seriously considering incorporating my global name into my future business (being a tailor). Because frankly, my nick is that cool. It's kind of my main and the name of my comic character... and the name of my website so... no. That wouldn't be ok with me.
I might be coming off as extra geeky here, but hey it's me. Just normal Q activity. -
Quote:Yes I am quite holding back my discussion urges (and my mad flaming skillz! Honest, I have them... *shifty eyes*) because frankly what I want at this point is atleast a confirmation or a denial of what we're all talking about.Yes.
No, no, no. Anyone who could think this way probably isn't playing this game for fun. They'd have to be a gold farmer or something. I suppose some people may only care about the characters and not the global, but that's probably a very small minority.
I really think NCsoft needs to pay attention to what people are saying here. It's like they're walking down the beach kicking down all the sandcastles people have been building.
Or just someone official popping in to say "Hey guys, we -are- talking about this, please bear with us."
That'd make me happy at this point. -
Quote:It's not about rage-quitting or throwing yourself of a doorstep. It's about being fair and about giving people a choice.I'm in the minority here - I'm more than likely going to be affected and my reaction is 'fair enough, what's next?'.
When we had the forum merger, there was an Escalus out there and if they're still about they didn't reply faster than I did to get the name made in to their own. If they have that as their global, I'm going to be renamed to Escalu or Escal or however far back it does end up going and I'll get a rename for my global.
The 'but people know me as...' argument may seem valid, but they're still going to know you as that. Is it so hard to rename yourself to something similar for example 'EscalusRex'. Do I want to change my global name? Not really. Does it bother me? No - these things happen. A small minority are affected and some are making mountains out of molehills. At what point have ragequits/protests/stamping your feet and going 'wah!' worked?
It is like recent posts has said, I've built up my reputation and my identity over the years and I hold a lot of pride with my global name. Some of my closest friends are feeling the same. They are essentially asking us to start over.
Regardless if I'm drama-queening it or raging or stamping my feet, this is how I feel and it's not going to change.
I'm gonna loose my global name, taking of more characters off it won't work because it's short. I probably can't change this fact, and it's making me sad. I will forever look at my counterpart with the same global and go "I miss my name".
I can live with loosing out, it happens all the time like you say. I can't however live with the fact that I'm NOT given a choice. If someone -asked- me politely if I could consider changing my global name and give me a good reason, I would be willing to consider it.
As it is, I'm not.
I can only put my hope in Avatea and the other devs who read all our rants (god knows it can't be easy) and that they forward our concerns to whomever is holding the plot-hammer.
I've said this before but I'll say it again; I still think you're doing top-notch work and I know you're trying to do the right thing. I don't agree with your methods currently, but I'm having hopes that you're taking this back to the drawing board.
-Q. -
Quote:We -are- talking semantics here, I completely agree. They asked for opinions and I'm giving my view of what I see is happening - using my "world map".If people are going to continue to pick on this semantical nit, they should at least do it accurately.
The change specified by the op affects the lowest number of users, so the statement made by Avatea is accurate in all respects. It does not say they determined that changing EU names affects less players than changing NA names. It says the number of users affected by the change is the lowest number of all possible numbers. That is not in any way inaccurate. That is not in any way ambiguous. It is misleading only for people choosing to be misled.
It is not the case that there were only two options: change NA users or change EU users. Many players are actually suggesting a third option in this very thread that affects *more* users:
Regardless of what they're saying or not, -I- feel that they're forcing this change on the european players. I'd still feel it if they'd worded it differently, or if I was on the american servers. It's quite simple really; I dislike unfair solutions regardless of who they happen to. And -that- was the point I was trying to make.
This is why I suggested that they actually let the two affected players discuss it between them to see if there's an easier solution there. Will take a little longer, sure, but there's months to go before the change. We have time and it doesn't really affect NCsoft at all. They don't need to be a middle hand, all it requires is an email.
If neither party is willing to let go of their globals, by all means chuck an _EU or _NA behind their name. But give -everyone- the rename token. Why? Because to me that seems more fair.
Who's to say my @Q. counterpart on the NA servers wants to have a name that some european bint has been running around causing havoc with? (I'm a sweetheart really)
-Q. -
Quote:I would actually, because then it'd still be same... but money is a little OT in this threadAnd as i stated at the start of my post... If i remember correctly, the prices (at least the GBP one) was set to match the then current sub fee ($14.99 for US and £8.99 for EU). The *EURO* cost IIRC was also set to be equivelent *AT THAT POINT IN TIME*.
What happens if the Euro suddenly dropped in value? Would you be happy to pay €20 for your sub fee even though it matched the British value?
You would be paying the same as me... but it would cost *MORE* of your currency to do so.
-Q. -
Quote:I should probably have specified that I am absolutely fine with the price if we all paid the same amount. It does tick me off a little that some of us are paying more than others. I was mildly upset when I wrote the above. XDI shall skip down to the last point.
At least you *know* how much each month your subscription fee is. And when the charges were 1st put in they *ALL* broke in around the same level (quite possibly the Euro option was something like €13.24 or something)
Of course, they could all charge in one currency, but i would assume that you would be ok with your monthly cost changing on a monthly basis just due to how the banks deal with currency conversion (note: depending on who you bank with as well, you might get slight price variations inside a country).
But that is another matter.
As an idea... when i started my account with SWG many years ago, the *monthly* fee was all in US Dollers, there was *NO* UK currency option. My 1st chargable month cost me £10.50 (so it was almost 17% more expensive than any other MMO than City of Heroes).
Hell, Eve Online has an option for Euro's and US Dollers (depending if you are inside or outside of the US). No GPB option. My sub fee for that varies each month.
If the Euro gets strong against a currency, then chances are you are "paying a bit over the odds" in comparison to the other payment options... but if the Euro gets very weak, you are currently saved against paying a lot more.
The *last* option is to constantly tweak the sub fee's each month, but you *still* need to have a baseline to compare them to.
Oh and also take into consideration possible bank/payment method charges. At least the *current* method keeps that amount that you pay the same each and every single month.
History of £ to €1 comparison
$ to £ is *about* even with the brits getting a slight advantage (for now).
*note* All of the above assumes that your currency is either £,$ or €. Players whose native currency is different, already have this problem (paying more one month, paying less the next... possibly even being priced out of the game due their currency going down the crapper)
Quote:Remember stay Defiant, keep your Union strong, Zukunft to the Na players who feel this is just another of a long list of EU wine and stay Vigilence till the end. (see what I did there )
-Q. -
Right. I'm gonna post my thoughts on this. I don't use the forum very often, and I'm sure that people has already voiced a lot of my thoughts below, but in this case it's more important that you get to hear as many voices as possible.
First of all, I'll start with my yay feeling. I think that merging the servers is a wise move that long-term will be beneficial to all over us (with increased playerbase and such.). And I have been wondering why it hasn't been done previously.
Now to the global name problem.
Who am I?
I am a EU player. I will be recieving my 36 months veteran reward come april. I go by the global name @Q. . I was previously named @Quildo, and I changed it when I realised it had double meaning, I didn't want to be associated with it's other meaning (yeah, go on, google it). In addition to this, I've always been called 'Q' by most players in the european servers.
My interpretation of your solution.
1. It's discrimination. Why?
I'm likely being forced to change my globals when the merge goes down just because I happen to be european. That is discrimination no matter how nicely you put it. If you want to draw this to it's point - You could just as easily be telling africans they have to change their name, just because they're black. Harsh comparison, I realise, but as I interpret it this is basically what you are saying.
2. But this way causes the least hassle! No, it doesn't. Why?
You claim that this way will affect the least amount of players. I disagree. Regardless of how you turn it around, it will affect the same number of players. -You- are choosing to force this change on the players that, again in my opinion, are less valuable.
Either way you do it, will piss half of the affected players off. I realise how this might be troublesome for you, and why you'd want to avoid as many arguments as possible.
But you can't go about this change without realising that the fairest way of doing this is by allowing both sides (the same global names) to individually have their chance to voice their opinion. What if an american player is willing to change their globals, but a european isn't?
3. This change will perhaps be easiest for you, but not for us. Why?
The European servers and the american servers are two completely different communities. While a merge is good (the more the merrier!), both sides have their groupings and people they like to hang out with.
From a roleplayers perspective, we have a massive wiki page where we have gathered information about ourselves and our characters (http://union.virtueverse.net/). Your change means we have to manually change every single page we ever made, to accomodate this change.
In addition, you will be causing a game wide confusion because frankly, everyone affected by your name-change will no longer know who they're talking to.
In addition to the above, I am wondering why you're asking for people's opinions when you with the current solution clearly have no regard for your entire european clientelle?
My gut feeling? I'm feeling disappointed. My interpretation of your initial idea shows me that you think europeans are second-rate customers. I can give several reasons for my feelings.
You have no European based help-lines - we're limited to online support unless we are willing to pay for international calls. You've stopped releasing over-the-counter game titles in Europe, stating it's too expensive. Come on, let's be serious, with the amount of cash you roll in, you should be able to afford it.
I've stated -this- point to support before. I pay my subscription in Euros. I've found that many of my UK friends, who pay in pounds, pay around 2-4 euros less for their subscription. I'm not even going to try recalculate how much americans pay - it'll probably upset me.
So basically me and everyone with me who was given euroes as their currency are currently paying 4 euros more per month to play a game where by each issue we recieve less.
Frankly speaking, I love this game, I really do. I love the style and the mechanics but most importantly I love my community from which I've gained many real life and life-time friends.
You (the devs) are mostly doing an outstanding job, and as someone being leader-trained, I know what a pain in the *** cat-herd this must be.
I think what you're trying to accomplish with this is honourable, but you have to rethink your methods. A lot of players I have talked to today are saying other unnamed hero MMOs are looking decidedly better.
Just my thoughts.
Sincerly,
Kim (@Q.) -
Sir yessir! *salutes* You guys can expect the domiblaster then ^^
-
Hi! I'd like to join in with my dominator if possible (she's maxed out on her build - perma-dom and such
)
If not dom, I have an ice/ice defender or a rad/ice blaster at level fifty.
Thank you!
@Q. -
Quote:I love you guys! ^^ Don't care if you can't say anything concrete, just the fact that you took the time to look into it makes me happy. You're a star on my sky!Hey everyone,
Now that I have got some more official information from our publishing/marketing teams in Europe, I figured Id give you a quick update. I'll paraphrase as best I can.
This isnt just from me (because you guys already know that I love you), but the EU community is very important to both Paragon Studios and NCsoft as a whole, and have always been passionate about making sure you have a great time in the game. Everyone involved is committed to making sure that you feel loved and appreciated, and I hope that starts to come across, especially as we ramp up marketing and PR for Going Rogue. In fact, Ive been told that NCsoft is about to announce a number of distribution partners that will sell and promote Going Rogue in Europe, including offering the prepurchase program that kicked off earlier this month. Youre also about to start seeing a lot more coverage of Going Rogue on your favourite gaming websites, blogs, press outlets, and advertising as the expansion nears its launch date. (Ok, that sounded kind of marketing-ish, but it's pretty much verbatim what they said.)
Next up: the box. This is a big issue and I know some of you are pretty cheesed about it. So here is the information I got (which shouldnt come as a surprise, really): because the game is online, and our consumers are predominantly online, it makes business sense to distribute online. Most MMO gamers in the EU are very net savvy and comfortable purchasing/downloading online. So NCsoft sells online because that is how more and more people are buying games, and we do get most of our new players from online distribution. There are boxes on the shelves in the U.S. because, from a distribution perspective, there is more demand herea much lower percentage of people in the US have broadband compared to the EU. (I didn't know that part.) Plus online distribution and production is much less complicated in the US, with only a single language version and a handful of major retailers and distributors, versus three languages and dozens of distributors in Europe. So there are no plans for a box on shelves in EU, but you will see Going Rogue available soon in a variety of digital stores across Europe.
Before you scream at me, remember, this isnt something I have any say in. Im just the messenger, so dont shoot me! (If it were up to me, however, Id have a box. Thats just me. No I dont have the pull to get one. No, I dont understand all the financial/technical issues behind it. Yes Im shooting my mouth off. But I did ask, and point out - several times - that it sure would be nice.) As someone who prefers a box, I get your frustration; although now that I think of it, I did just buy software digital-only, so Im kind of a hypocrite.
Last topic: servers. Yes, the EU servers feel underpopulated at times, and that makes it harder to group. Last year we merged the forums to bring the EU and US communities together. There are, however, no plans to merge the servers, but we are looking at designing an in-game system that will help solve the problem. One of my big personal goals is bringing people together, and this will help with that agenda. (How's that for vague? What can I tell you, it's "in development.")
Anyway, I'm sure they're not all the answers you wanted to hear, but at least you have "an official word" now, which was the goal of the exercise. So that is progress.
War Witch

As far as I've noticed, the added letter shows up in all the key-binds related to chat. Also, when I hit c (which binds a channel) and posted a link, the c only appeared next time I hit enter to type in local.
Devs, I like you guys a lot anyway, but I would really love for this to be fixed as it's horribly irritating when roleplaying.
Thank you.
