512x256 is preferrable, but I don't want to shoot down a great idea that requires verticality to work. So the answer is...Maybe? Can you arrange the elements on your design both ways, just to make sure your entry complies with our format?
-
Hey, Tsumiju. I haven't had a chance to see all the entries just yet, but a second email probably won't be necessary. If there's a compelling reason for using an alternate typeface, I'm open to it. And if the idea's awesome but the font doesn't work, I wouldn't hold it against you.

Quote:All the source artwork you've asked about is on the GR website. Look under 'Characters,' 'Enemy Groups,' and 'Concept Art.'I was really thinking about staying out of this one since I certainly don't need more demands on my time, but man I'd love to have some artwork shown in-game... Oh squee!
I think I'll give it a shot, but it would be so very helpful to have source artwork to work from. What does Cole look like? What do typical resistance types look like? The PPD?
I know you have a few screenies on your GR site, but a fansitekit like for CoH/V would be super helpful -

Quote:The logo's custom.does any one know what font is used for the City of Heroes logo? or is it custom?
Final font treatments for the Loyalist propaganda will be some form of sans serif block lettering, but don't worry--font usage will NOT be counted against you if you've already submitted something and gone with a different style of lettering. Mainly, we're looking for clever wording and/or art treatments. -
Quote:Focus on the major players. I'd love to show you concept for some of these, but it'll have to wait.I've watched that video more than a few times
I was meaning more for you to show us concept art or screenshots of AntiMatter, Battle Maiden, Black Swan, Bobcat, Chimer, Diabolique, Dominatrix, Infernal, Malaise, Nightstar, Shadowhunter and Siege - plus any new ones -
We're specifically looking for wall applications: spray paint and stencil artwork would be ideal. Small posters might be possible too.

Quote:You can see official concept art of Emperor Cole/Tyrant, Tyrant's Tower, the PPD, the Resistance, and Calvin Scott on the website right now, and more should be available soon.By the way, I think this thread would be a really good place for them to post screenshots or concept art of all the redesigned Praetorian AVs, so people entering the contest can be as accurate as possible with their posters - like how can people draw the Paretorian Guard if they don't know what they look like?
In the meantime, let me point you toward the youtube video of HeroCon '09 for some of the other concept (quickest way for you to see it):

For Mother Mayhem, go to 5:11.
For Neuron, go to 5:25.
For Marauder, go to 5:35. -
Quote:He's not the Marcus Cole you know. Emperor Cole/Tyrant is in a very gray area morally, and the utopia he's built has come at a very steep cost indeed. Praetoria is not a democracy, and the people are not 'free'. Are they safe? Yes, for now, but Cole rules unilaterally, and some of his iron-handed decisions are very dictatorial. You're making it sound like Tyrant's some kind of dictator, rather than just a misunderstood hero
Like I said about the 3D, I'd like to enter, but ti depends on what ready-made 3D elements I can find that'd be suitable for Praetorians.
The Resistance doesn't call him 'Tyrant' for nothing. -
Quote:Maybe? If I can open your file in Photoshop, we're golden.May I make an Open Source suggestion?

Quote:We'd like you guys to approach this as a drawing/graphic design challenge. You can use the GR website resources (character profiles and concept art) to get an idea of what some of these characters look like, but shoot for simple, stylized images and think hardest about the message:How about some still shots of resistance/loyalist/Praetorean AVs to help us make our images? Or did I miss a link with some good options to pull from?
What would the Cole government say to keep citizens in line? What truths does the Resistance want to expose? -
Alas, this one's 2D only, I'm afraid. The Loyalist propaganda will be attached to billboards and the Resistance graffiti will be applied to walls--no tv screens.
-
Quote:Sounds like a plan.Well, Photoshop can add some very good efefcts to make 3D look like it's 2D - and as I can't draw, 3D is my best way of doing it
Just try to think old school, like you're actually working for the Ministry of Proganda in some authoritarian state.
-
Sure. You guys could probably help each other come up with stronger ideas. I won't be able to weigh in personally (or it'll look like favortism), but when I need art advice, I always find it helpful to run my ideas by a friend.
-
Quote:The examples are just that: examples. Feel free to use whichever characters make sense to you.The actual game thinks otherwise
I'd like to enter this - but I'd be using a 3D art program, and I'm not sure I could get all the parts I needed to make models of Tyarnt or his thugs in time for the deadline.
And just a tiny bit of art direction for you guys, to point you down the right path: 3D art may not be the best fit in Praetoria b/c we're looking to sources like Communist and American propaganda circa WW2 for inspiration. That means flat, stark colors either alone or combined with a more painterly approach, bold block lettering, and clever graphic design.
We definitely weren't expecting you guys to build and execute in 3D. -
Quote:Y'know what? Sure. We can work with other formats. Having layers is ideal because it gives us the ability to easily modify individual elements (which would save us time in adapting the art into actual game assets), but the contest is really about clever ideas, so don't let the file format be an issue. Submit the art in any common format, and we'll work around the layer thing.Hurm. Any chance of allowing other formats like PNG, TIFF, or BMP? My non-thousand dollar editor of choice (Acorn for OS X) doesn't support PSD or TGA.
Thanks!
Looking forward to seeing what people come up with!

Quote:There's definitely been a renewed emphasis on making the maps as clever, unique, and interesting as possible, and the folks who brought you those I17 missions are hard at work on killer new stuff for GOING ROGUE. Lots of neat new stuff to see, I promise.I just wanted to say after running the new Posi TF last night that the new maps for it were amazing!
Very atmospheric and I found very creepy!
I would love to see more maps like this (and Im sure you have plenty of others up your sleeve for GR!).
One thing I was thinking is that there is a map Redside were there is a Crey Lab map which had been destroyed with wrecked walls and fires. Even the lifts work differently were you can jump down a tube to get to the next floor. I was wondering if that kind of setup can be used for some of the future maps you design? -
Quote:Good point that I'll answer first. Other threads are still completely legit, and you should feel free to post on any of them. As a dedicated character artist, he'll be better equipped to answer technical questions about the system and his process whereas my perspective on the Art Team is broader and more general. I'm collecting feedback from all corners, not just in regards to costume parts.before we get started, because i will happily ask some questions and make some suggestions, but what would you say the relation of this thread to jay's costume request thread is, do you guys still check that one or would this be a more productive place to make a suggestion? thanks in advance.

What's up, everybody? As your friendly neighborhood CITY OF HEROES Art Lead, I wanted to create a dedicated space where you, the player, can post your questions and comments about anything in the game that's art related (costumes, environments, animation, fx, sound, UI, concept art, etc.). It's a direct line of communication between you and the COH Art Team, and what I'd really like to get out of it is to learn what the playerbase wants to see in upcoming releases.
A couple of quick ground rules to get us started:
1. Gotta keep it real: Ongoing development is of course my top priority, so my ability to respond to posts and PMs will be limited. If you don't get a direct reply, don't worry--rest assured that I'm reading everything that appears on this thread.
2. Patience, young Jedi: Posting on this thread won't necessarily expedite that special part you've wanted forever, but it'll at least keep it on the radar. We're always striving to give you guys what you want, but that comes in two flavors: variations on existing stuff, and brand-new stuff that expands the game into exciting new territory. Though we try to honor older requests (see: animated tails), it has to happen as a part of overall development.
3. This is why we can't have nice things: If something's logistically prohibitive, technically unfeasible, or aesthetically miss-matched with the game, I'll always try to level with you. Certain things just aren't on the agenda, and why dwell on those when we could be talking about all the awesome stuff that you get instead?!
4. Rein it in there, cowboy: Let's try to keep the dialogue measured and constructive. It's helpful to know what you like and don't like, but play it cool, y'know?
So yeah, what's on your mind? -
Hey, folks. I'm packing up the art discussion and moving it over to City Life on an ongoing basis. We'll be discussing all things art-related in CoX, so feel free to drop by.
-
Quote:Glad you noticedThe little things, actually. I haven't been on for months so I haven't had the chance to even get to know what's IN the issue, until it went live today.
But what has impressed me a lot are the NPCs walking around, with their bags of groceries and coughing and crinkly bags... The sounds - cars beeping, with engines... It seems more ambient than ever, and particularly combine that with the shadows and such? It makes for a far more realistic experience...Our Sound Engineer Adam Kay gets all the credit for these improvements, and he's devoted a lot of extra time above and beyond his regular duties to go back and enhance the overall ambient sounds. I'm constantly amazed how much the sound adds to the experience.

Quote:That's pretty much my plan. We're getting some useful discussion out of this, and it should really be it's own thread. You can ask the Mods to start official feedback/request/bug threads...
I won't be able to respond every day necessarily or get a whole bunch of special requests expedited through the pipeline, but at the very least I'd like to know what's on the playerbase's collective wishlist and, whenever possible technically, whenever it makes sense aesthetically, to argue for those things as part of the game's ongoing development.
As you'd expect, most of the focus is on expanding into completely new territory, but I don't want to lose sight of artistic gaps created along the way. Often, there are creative ways to do both at the same time. -

Just wanted to give a little shoutout to any Hawaiians who might be reading this. I'm a kama'aina from Nuuanu valley, so aloha from Paragon HQ!

Quote:Coincidently, a designer recently pointed out this bug to me, and it's definitely something I'd like to fix. Looks pretty dang weird if you ask me.See, the reason I ask is that I've actually seen this in various ways in-game...
Finally, CURRENTLY ON LIVE female lower arms that use anything "with skin," such as the Fingerless Gloves texture for Smooth Gloves or the Pointed Glove and Flared Glove 3D model options will have the MALE lower arm texture, ...
...It'd certainly make me personally VERY happy, and even if nothing comes out of it, at least I know SOMEONE heard my suggestions after all these years
The character team's completely tapped right now, working on [redacted], but I'll look into the bug for sure. Man, I bet you can't wait to get all those awesome [redacted] parts!
As for the larger point, all I can promise for now is that we'll continue to look into it. If there turns out to be a manageable compromise, and the player base continues to show interest, of course we'd consider it.
Being relatively new to the Art Lead post, though, I'm still in the process of getting an overall read on costume/character requests. I get PMs all the time asking for one thing or another, and the requests are all over the map as you might expect. GOING ROGUE and the next Super Booster will fill at least two major categories, but after that we'll just have to see.
