Hi all,
Thinking about jumping in and having a crack at some PvP. Haven't done so since Siren's Call wayyyyy back when it first came out and had a blast. I realise things have changed and I've had a good look at some of the main mechanical differences.
What I'd like to know is whether or not a controller can work as a pvp toon (fairly casual, zone pvp primarily). My favourite is plant/ - can that work? More specifically, can a plant/time work? If not, are there other pvp controllers that might work better?
Cheers! -
One thing I noticed is that you're making great use of your patron pet - now, I have a *lot* more recharge than you do because of Chronoshift and it would be a simple matter to have them up permanently (although it would mean a rather large change to my build...).
Any idea how much extra DPS they dish out for you? -
Just watched a couple of your vids... awesome. I thought I'd give a pylon a bash after seeing yours...
...8:06 (no insps, no lore pets, no temps).Impressed that I can manage it, but a pretty poor time really. I can definitely do better though - lost a lot of damage because fly trap got munched twice and I got hit and knocked down for a bit a couple times. Also forgot to fire off Judgement, which should have sped things up. Maybe I could shave a minute off?
My plant/cold could probably do this much quicker, but wouldn't be as good doing the ITF, I suspect. -
Just managed to complete a solo MoITF run on virtue with my Plant/Time controller (even level/x8, no insps, no temps, no lore pets).
Took 3 hours. Sadly, I missed the Master badge because, perhaps foolishly, I let a couple people tag along to soak xp/shards and watch the final fight. Unfortunately, though I warned them to stay in the air... one got nuked by an ambush that decided to go for him, rather than me.
Very sad, but I will run the ITF again for the badge next week. I have a pretty polished strat now, so I'm pretty confident that I'll pull it off - only had one hairy moment where the RNG decided to nail me a couple times.
Very pumped anyway! Quite an achievement, I think! -
With regard to Creepers;
So, I have 5x Posi + 1x Trap of the Hunter Proc slotted.
To clarify my understanding:
- The set bonuses function regardless.
- The recharge applies to the cooldown of the power and the end redux applies to the cost.
- The damage/accuracy apply only to the attacks that can take Targeted AOE (the cone and the AOE?)
- No +dam/+acc is applied to the ST range or the melee?
- Similarly, the procs check only on the attacks in which they could be slotted. So, the Trap proc checks only during the ST range, the Posi proc checks twice?
If the above is correct, Hami O's would circumvent this because Accuracy can be slotted in each of the Creeper's attacks?
If you were opting for set bonuses, Gravitational Anchor would provide better bonuses, but almost the entirety of the bonuses would only apply to 1 out of 4 of the attacks? If you went for Grav Anchor, you'd then be better taking the Posi proc over Trap, because it applies on two attacks?
Hmm! What an odd power! -
That is an incredible build. Thanks very much - that's exactly what I'm after. There might be one or two *minor* changes I'll make (orders of powers, one slot moved, maybe switch one power), but that is fantastic. Wow.
Thanks very much.
Cheers! -
Really appreciate the responses; very very helpful. I've had a toy around with the first build posted; I can play around the edges and it looks very very strong. Thank you for that.
The second build appears similarly effective. In practice, does S/L defense offer similar levels of protection from ranged attacks?
Another question - procs in creepers/roots. I've seen this a lot - is it something worth aiming to do? It isn't worth slotting for damage in creepers?
Thanks again! -
So, I've been playing a fair bit on a new Plant/Storm toon. He's a *lot* of fun and I've been quite content to blunder along and see how things go.
That said, as I'm starting to approach the pointy end of the content, I've started to think about a final build for him... and boy, am I struggling on MIDs to get my head around him. He's my first controller and I've really got no idea how to get what I want out of him.
I'd like to maximise defense and also maximise my recharge (and then, whereever possible, pick up +end, +recovery, +hp, +regen bonuses). Permahaste would be a dream, but I can't for the life of me recall how much +Rech I'm going to need. I don't mind spending the influence on this guy: he's a blast to play and quickly becoming my main.
As to defense... I can easily design builds that reach the S/L softcap (I've also got one that softcaps S/L/E). But with Hurricane, that seems pointless. I'd have thought Ranged/AoE would be the way to go, but maybe I should just focus on Range? Any thoughts?
Outside of defenses, one question related to the powers themselves:
How does +Recharge interact with the Storm pets? I'm not yet at a point where I can summon multiple tornados/storms,freezing rains, creepers, etc; how does recharge work on these things? Can you have multiples of the pseudopets out? Does Rain stack? I thought Tornado could stack but had no idea about the others...
Really appreciate any guidance! -
Hi all,
Trying to kit out a new tank; aiming to layer my defenses as best as possible. Getting lots of s/l def is easy but I'm struggling to even it out with E/N; ideally I'd get E/N/S/L def to 35% so storm kick can get me the softcap...
Ran out of slots here and a few powers left to pick... thoughts? Really struggling with this build =/
As to incarnates, I'll be going for Rebirth with Destiny and at the moment I'd be picking Spiritual for Alpha.
Thoughts? Thanks in advance!

I hadn't considered the extra Def from Phalanx Fighting. Seems like a silly thing to forget, but it does seem like it would make more sense to give myself some wiggle-room (aim for 50~% def) and then rely on PF to carry me the rest of the way. If I didn't have at least a couple in range, I'd be doing it wrong - if I were pulling the AVs on BAF, the guntowers don't care about my DEF anyway.
I'm also over on Virtue. Cheers for your thoughts! -
Here's a build I worked out on Mids' - my current build isn't as good, but is fairly similar. I don't yet have the purps/pvp bits, but I either have everything else or can easily pick it up. It *almost* does everything I want - I'd like to squeeze in more defense and I'm just a few seconds from genuine perma-haste (which is fine really).
I'm willing to entertain suggestions re: the epic pool and any other power changes. I haven't tested out the jumping attack, but I'm keen to play around with that.
I should have 95% def debuff resist, but I can't figure out how to have two stacks of Active D in Mids.
Thanks again for thoughts!

Thanks for the initial advice; I'll upload my build as it stands when I'm at my main PC and can use the Titan Sentinel program.
I already have the LOTG sets (incl. 5 +recharges); I've also got the miracle proc and 2 HOs for Active Defence. I'm missing any PVP/Purple Sets currently, but I'm happy to work towards them.
As to the suggestion about the Jumping Pool attack - I haven't actually seen it in action although I did read the "Charleston Chew" thread and that put me off. Is it as bad as all that? Charleston Chew *is* terrible, after all!
Cheers for the quick replies - I'll get my current build up tonight hopefully. -
Hi all,
Thanks in advance for opening *another* one of these threads. Hopefully there's no really obvious thread on this topic that I've missed... =/
I've just returned to COH after an extended break; I'm a VIP subscriber again and have picked up my old character. He's a Shields/SS tanker and I'm just trying to really nail down IOs.
I've got the basics and have begun to track down some of the pieces I want - this is the first character I played to 50 (I started way back in I3 and never got a character above level 35~, took a long break and picked up Shields when I returned) and I love playing him. I'd love to pour some more energy into him and really max him out... it might take a long while, but that's what I'd like to work towards.
I've started playing with the incarnate content and have a good idea as to where I want to be with that - but the IO system is considerably more complex. I've had a play around with MIDs, but I was hoping I could get some advice from people here regarding what I'd like to achieve. I'm sure with experience you get better at seeing exactly how to do everything with a character... personally, I just can't see it.
Here's what I'd like to achieve (in order of importance) - really appreciate any help:
- Stick to concept. He's SD/SS... and my epic is currently Pyre. I picked it because it was the best (at the time, at least), and I *super* regret breaking concept to do it. I'd like to respec to Energy, since it fits best. I'm happy to include any of the epic pools (to hold sets) if I don't have to use them, but I'd rather stick to energy.
As mentioned, I'm pretty happy with Incarnate content, although I'm happy to switch my Alpha and Destiny slots to whatever I need to if it helps.
- Max out Defence Debuff Resistance. I'm rocking 60odd% at the moment which is great, but I have eaten a fair bit of floor fighting the Romans
- Achieve 59% (or as close as possible) to my positional defenses for the high-end content. My understanding is that this is the cap for the incarnate mobs and I'd like to be as tough as possible.
- Permahasten (or as close to); mainly to ensure a solid attack chain. I suspect it is necessary for the DDR.
- Other defenses; currently I'm running a Rebirth for the regeneration and my resistances are ok. Any extra HP/resists are obviously worthwhile to maintain my tankiness.
- Damage; I've a preference for AOE... mainly so I can efficiently pay for the build! Is Energy Torrent a *reasonable* replacement for Fireball? I'd like to maintain damage based slotting for my attacks - I'm not really interested in gimping my output for Stun sets and the like, although if slots permit, that's an option for things that wouldn't appear in the attack chain.
- Jab; I'd like to fill the thing with a bunch of Procs rather than a standard slotting. This would give me something to do during a rage crash and I like the concept of it as a 'signature move'.
- Fly; somehow, I'd like to include Fly in the build. I just don't see it as a possibility: I'm currently running Combat Jumping, Aid Self, Hasten and Tough/Weave for my pool powers. CJ might be possible to drop, but as-is, I'm only at 46% def to all and CJ is a big part of that. I guess when I finally get the PVP 3% IO I could swap CJ for Fly...?
- Rage/End Issues; I'm not convinced I need more than 1 stack of Rage at a time. I've noticed that while I'm fighting, the end crashes can run me out of end sometimes too quickly. That's a little frustrating.
I realise I've basically asked "what would you do to max out Shields/SS if you had unlimited inf?", but I appreciate any help nonetheless: primarily for the very high-end elements that I just can't seem to work out for my build. Is it even possible to do all of these things? I can't figure it, if it is.
Again, thanks very much for your time.
Cheers!
