...or do I just get to keep cooking cards on the least graphically advanced game I play?
I hate to be so confrontational about this, but I'm really tired of it, especially when there's a Gaming Evolved AMD badge on the front page of the main site. -
Quote:I just wanted to say that I've had this exact problem with three different machines and two different cards (an HD4870x2 and an HD6870).This isn't just you, a lot of people have similar issues, with much more powerful systems.
I have dual HD 6770's (1gb) in crossfire, a AMD Phenom x4 3.4 ghz processer and 32 gigs of ram, and I can watch as (In coh, and ONLY in coh) the gpu's both spike to 99% when I FIRST start the game, and after about 20 min the game gets very sluggish, textures fail to render, and eventualy, I get GPU error and the game closes.
No other game causes this, I can play crysis 2, bioshock 2, etc, with absolute max settings and both gpus MAYBE hit 60-70%. And compared to those 2 games above, CoH looks like utter complete crap. I can play 15 min TOPS with settings set to max in coh, up to 45 min before the crash if I lower all settings to 'butt fraking ugly' mode.(Maybe, still lags like a **** if i turn too fast outside)
This is NOT 'our' fault and its starting to make me sick that the only responses that are meant as 'help' are the replies of 'Oh i don't have an issue, so it can't be the game, get a new computer'
Honestly, this IS an issue they have to address, since I am betting a huge number of people who experience it, don't even have 'forum access' or don't bother to come here(And yes, them peoples heads off to new games. DUH. what a glorious way to keep your customers :P)
If I go on, my frustration with this problem will really start to show, so I'm just going to leave it there. I just wanted to say that you are not alone in having this problem or in your frustration with the response. -
Tony, I just want to take this opportunity to send you massive thanks for all you do for the "City of" community. The sites are great and your committment to delivering them to us is amazing!

Quote:I think the problem of "realism" is best dealt with through imagination: I didn't "conjure" a rock, the ground just responded to my commands so quickly that you didn't see it fly up to me. Or maybe I formed it from the dust in the air. Or maybe I'm made of rock and the flying part is actually me just adjusting my body to repel the earth enough to project me along. Or the "earth" I control isn't *Earth* and I reach into a separate dimension for the constructs and powers I invoke. There's a million and one ways to imagine its use. Outside of the fictional world, you could just not use the emote if you're that high up in the air, but rather have it keyed someplace convenient so you can activate it when you take off, then nothing would be “conjured”. There'd also be the option of just not using the flypose period - much like they would be not using it today - if it destroys some definition of the character so much. Before I postulate: I know nothing about the technicalities of how this works.
That being said, based on what we have in-game, I imagine it would not be overly difficult to design some new emotes and code them in such a way that they could be additional fly poses. I remember when the lotus sitting position was changed to allow it to activate while hovering, so in theory, the Devs know how to make an emote ground-specific, flight-specific, or a hover-capable crossover (such as /em lotus or /em stancehero1).
The issue that I can see arising lies in the formation of these new poses. Rather than just a new position (say, the Iron Man flight pose with your hands down by your sides as part of your propulsion, still a pose I'd like to see in the game) what your talking about is adding another graphic on. Granted, this is probably as easy as most other emotes, where the additional emote graphic is just conjured out of thin air, but I think the issue would be the realism of it. An ice slide animation is easy to justify: you are in flight and you form an ice slide beneath your feet. But for flying on a levitating chunk of earth? That might look a little strange if a big slab of bedrock conjured out of the Steel Canyon sky.
Based on what we see in game, your idea is plausible, and probably quite possible. But if (and hopefully when) the Devs decide to input multiple flight type variations, they probably want it to look somewhat realistic, considering how defining travel powers can be for many characters.
I think these are better ways to implement this kind of thing than trying to account for each and every character's - not even player's - "realism" concerns. -
I know how they are invoked in the game, my question was more toward how the animations work and if it was feasible that process could be leveraged for new customizations. For instance, right now, each of the fly emotes locks your character into a specific pose for as long as you're moving and flying. Can the animations of these poses be set so that, for instance /em flypose9 locks your character into the specific pose of riding on a flying piece of rock? My question is more toward the ability of the technology involved with the animation to change to incorporate things other than the character model (which it does with other non-fly emotes) thereby setting up new opportunities for flying poses. I'm guessing this is probably a dev question.
Questions of that technology aside, I'm not looking for a way to set a default pose, I was simply suggesting other poses that I thought would be good to include (flypose5 and flypose6, if you will) regardless of the answer to that original question. Standing and sitting seem to be in line with the existing flight poses, so I thought that those would be more reasonable suggestions when compared with potential limitations on animation that could cause my original question/suggestion to be impossible.
The best way I've found to standardize the fly pose is a bind as you've said, but normally I just bind the flypose emote itself, if at all, just so there's no problems if I'm already running/flying/etc. I did know the lotus emote and it was actually what got my thinking of adding it as a fly pose. When they added the ability to invoke it while hovering, that was what originally gave me the idea of suggesting it become a pose you could actually move while doing.
I'm sorry if I wasn't clear in my OP. -
I'm going to start with a question and then two suggestions. My question is as to how the fly emotes work. Could flight emotes be easily modified to add things like flying metal discs, floating rocks, etc that the character is standing on or is that technology not part of the flight emote functionality? If it's possible, I think it would be a cool way to add that kind of customization without having to add in a new set of travel powers for the given look.
Regardless of the answer to that question, my two suggestions:
- Standing / standing with arms crossed. I can get it to work pretty well with Hover + Siphon Speed on my Grav Controller, but I'd like to have that look on any character.
- Seated / cross legged. To get the flying carpet, inscrutible mystic, or invisible jet look. If the addition of items as I asked above is possible, an actual flying carpet could be one of the options. -
An aura I've always wanted is some kind of a liquid dripping aura. This could possibly also involve the trailing shown in the Steampunk aura to create watery footprints or color changed to create a dripping slime effect.

I wish I had the drop from my favorite radio morning show: "I KNEW IT!"
I saw this in beta but thought it was just a trick of the background. Nice to see I was wrong. -
About three weeks ago, I started having a problem where my card was hitting 100 degrees and kicking the fan on every 15-20 seconds for 10-15 seconds. The temperature would hover between 95 and 100 for the duration of play with the activity frequently pinned at 99%. Now, even with the Ultra settings turned completely off, the card's temperature is still going up to 100 and kicking the fan on. It does not happen as frequently as with Ultra Mode enabled, but it is still happening. At this point, I have tried the following with the existing card:
-Rolled the Drivers back from 10.6 to 10.5
-Rolled the Drivers back from 10.5 to 10.4 (I absolutely know these were working without the problem as of the launch of I17)
-Disabled Catalyst AI
None of these changes did anything.
This weekend, I pulled the card and put in a 4870 (non x2). Though this card had a lower amount of memory (512MB) compared with the one I'm having problems with (1GB x2), it performed on CoX without problem. The drivers had been brought back up to current (10.6) and Ultra Mode was enabled and the card's temperature hovered in the mid 80's. If I am having a problem with Crossfire (which it seems to be), shouldn't disabling the Catalyst AI resolve that?
I do not have any problems with other games. For instance, I benchmarked Batman Arkham Asylum at an average of 59 FPS. The card never went above 82 degrees, and activity did not go above 25%. I play Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Battlefield 2: Bad Company multiplayer games without the card complaining or showing the temperature/activity that CoX does. All three of these games are considerably more graphically advanced that CoX.
I should also mention that my machine is in a 10x10 room with a window A/C unit that normally keeps the room at 70-72 degrees.
Any ideas as to what's going on or how I could resolve it? -
Is it possible that this is only Cryptic's way of saying that Flashback is operable? As someone pointed out, _you_ are the only thing missing from the equation, so why are we assuming more than a change to the game that is personal for all of us?
After all, I remember a Paragon Times article that said that the Red Caps turned Sally into a horrible, vicious monster. Have you ever seen that happen? -

Gotcha. My bad. -
I think Clockstopper is for beating Gears. Not the named boss, but the little things that come out of a Prince after you beat him. I have a badge that is progressing that says "Defeat the Clockwork's animated gears to earn this badge."
