I will soften my statement as well, given the relief in the chamber. I hadn't thought about it when I wrote up my thoughts.

That said, I still (somewhat softer now) stand by the overall idea, that Ridley has tweaked the canon whether people like it or not.

    That's a good point.

Just got back. Overall I enjoyed it. Was worth it just to see the great visuals. That said, I do agree with some of the criticisms people have.

    1. Character motivations are very murky in places.
    2. The old man reveal wasn't as big a moment as it seems they wanted it to be and it was resolved way to quickly.
    3. A lot of the science was "odd" or just plain silly.
    4. The impregnation didn't really make a ton of sense and used the standard sci-fi trope of "ultra fast gestation" so we can see what's cookin'.

That said, I'd recommend it as it was a decent sci-fi movie with a top notch cast and almost perfect visuals.

    A few side notes:

    1. I'm glad the original directors cut of Alien was on the other night and I'm really glad I watched it as it really made the movie going experience better seeing all the nods and winks to the original.

    2. Ridley Scott made this movie. What we see is canon. The AvP........not so much. Throw it out now, he's retconned it. Sorry. I always saw the AvP world like a comicbook crossover event at best and disconnected from the original series. But that's just me.
  4. Yeah photobucket sizes them down for something like this. I'd hoped the direct links would be blown up, but weren't. They are readable in their native size and were ingame, but I'll admit some of the fonts used were a bit blurrish.
  5. Did anyone else think the tagline on the poster should have said:

    Brass Monday

    That Funky Monday

    Thanks for the images though.
Is there some forum posting protocol I'm unaware of here that I broke? If so I apologize. I was scared someone would complain that one post was so huge so I broke it into multiple posts.

It didn't exactly blow me away as a great movie, but it was completely enjoyable and I thought it was a successful ride of fun for an origin story of an awesome super power.
    *shrugs*
Cliches, cliches, cliches, bad writing, bad acting, bad story, trying to cram too much into the first movie, bad lead, bad love interest, the humor was awkward and not very humorous, cliches, felt like Top Gun but with CGI tights, the CGI tights, bad CGI mask, a bad villain for an introduction to a franchise, meh action and cliches.

On the plus side parts of it did look cool. But overall, yeah steaming pile.

  10. I was going to pipe in earlier (before the drama happened) and sing the praises of Ill/Cold. It isn't all perma'd out (Its really close though) and pretty much feels like one of my most powerful trollers. I also have an Ill/Therm, nice but nothing over the top strong. It's also my main marketeer and has pretty much retired from hero work. (That's not an RP thing, I just haven't respec'd her since inherent fitness, etc. and she makes meh monies so she's serving a purpose ) I also have an Ill/Time which is probably one of my favorite trollers for fun and ease of powerful build: perma everything and softcapped defenses with minimal effort. Not a cheap build, but a pretty easy one to put together without the need for chasing defense bonuses and LOTG +recharges.

In the long run I don't know as the current builds stand if the /Cold or /Time is more powerful but I'm pretty positive if I gave the /Cold build the influence treatment and tweaked it to more perma'd etc it would hands down be the most powerful troller I have.

That said, I'm just finishing up a dark/dark and will likely move on to an Ill/Dark which I really really really can't wait to play.
  11. The Iron Throne is mine, by right.........and/or Visa or Mastercard.
  12. I did hear one theory that maybe it was a way to push more lore and information about Essos and the slave culture. I think I preferred it when prostitutes were used for that.

(Not saying I buy that theory)
  13. I typically give even the most mediocre superhero movies a pass. Green Lantern was a steaming pile though. And the script had a lot to do with that.

We're not seeing her nightly littany of names (I'm glad Jaquen brought that up before faceshifting) and the rage that's building up in her. I hope next season with see that development during her time with the hound.

    .
Actually we totally agree on Harrenhal. I too, think the one thing missing (I did a poor job of articulating it) is Arya's personal/emotional journey. hence my points about her identity changes. I agree we aren't seeing enough of her internal story. And while the story is streamlined and her performance is one of the best of the season, yeah, they kind of missed that mark a bit. But the streamlining of the story isn't to blame. The smallish amount of time devoted to Arya is, I think.

Elio argued that he feels the over inclusion of Robb/Talisa hurt the amount of time given to the Arya story. I can see that.
  16. True Blood really helped me learn how to not only accept adaptations but also learn to really like them. After the first season the show started to really become it's own world and completely diverged from the books (much much more than GoT ever has and I think ever will). But after a while I think you had to look at it honestly and realize that you can enjoy both. And here's the shocking thing (sometimes, just sometimes the adaptation actually improves the story). I know it sounds sacrilegious, but sometimes streamlining a story is a good thing. The kicker for me, that finally allowed me to appreciate the TV world of True Blood. The fact that the author absolutely LOVED the show. That let me breathe and say, "it's ok, you can like it too."

Confession time: I hated the Qarth portion of ACOK. Hated it. Bored me to tears. I hated Xaro Xon Ducksauce, the character in the books. The only saving grace to the whole portion of the novel was the House of the Undying and I'll freely admit that my first read it didn't register much more than some acid trip like visuals. It wasn't until I started digging into ASOIAF that a lot of those visuals became significant. As I said prior in the thread, I think if they showed those visuals on the show it would give away too much and I think they want the RW as surprising as Ned's head.

I'll say it here. The show did a better job with Qarth. Martin isn't perfect and this was one portion of the story I think they actually improved and did a better job explaining the world and magic and dragons than they ever could with the snoozefest from the novels.

And I think some pruning of the slave cities portions of the later books is in order. Dany becomes tiresome (IMHO) in the books during this stretch and I believe we aren't supposed to feel that way. Snip, snip, Dave and Dan. Snip, snip. And Dorne, you better prove important pretty soon, or I see massive trimming in your future.

Also, while some of Arya's story in Harrenhal was a miss, I think streamlining it and not having changing allegiances was smart. And this isn't just because of the brilliant acting between Dance and Williams (who wouldn't want to see that), in some ways (some) I think the economy of the TV show made that portion of the story better. I found myself confused, first read through, trying to remember who was on whose side. I do wish though that we'd have Arya use different identities to set up her trip across the sea, but that may have been confusing to some non readers and I find it completely forgivable.

Yes, yes I love and completely obscessed with the books. I truely, truely love them. But watching those characters come to life onscreen every week, is also deeply rewarding.

Personally I love them both (book and show). Sure the books are intellectually more satisfying, the television show is more gutterally satisfying. If that makes sense.

    On adaptations:

The reason Van Halen's cover of You Really Got Me(or Dancin in the Streets) is awesome isn't because it sounds like the original song. It's because you get to hear a good song through the filter of Van Halen. I've never liked cover songs where the artist just tries to make it sound exactly like the original. If I want that, I'll listen to the original. I look at book adaptations the same way. You are watching ASOIAF through a different filter. You can't expect a copy and my guess is if you got one it wouldn't be as satisfying. But sometimes a cover doesn't work because it's passed through the wrong filter: I'm looking at you Sheryl Crow and Sweet Child O' Mine.

(And for those who aren't Van Halen fan's, you can substitute it with any band that has done a successful cover song)

BTW, you said partner? Are they together? I get that impression, but I can't find confirmation of it anywhere.
I've either heard her referred to as "partner" or girlfriend. They've been together since at least the late nineties, they just aren't married.

He's a little more understanding about the show, he's just such a purist that he can't see the point of some changes. He takes a more thoughtful approach to his problems with the show. Linda on the other hand is much more critical. She's very into the lore and backstory and thinks it will be vital by the end of the series and feels the show doesn't give enough time to it. I think I heard him say recently on a podcast that she's almost done with the show. They are just too close to the material and can't see the show as it is, an adaptation.
