  1. I'm with Local on a lot of those points about the original movies and the Singer version. I think a lot of people over romanticize the Donner films because they come from their childhoods and tend to only remember how good Reeves was and forget how bad the movies were (I know I did). At the time they were a phenomenon but after watching part 1 recently, they are really dated and their plots were weak due to constraints with the technology of the time, which we don't have now.

My wish is the writers/directors decide to forgo the need to once again tell the origin story (something both Donner and Singer handled fine). Between those films and Smallville, I think we all get it by now. What would be nice is to finally have a super hero movie where the most powerful takes on 'a' most powerful, without all of the psycho-analyzing of "what it means to be a hero" or "how lonely it must be to be so powerful" or "I'm different, nobody understands me". We've had many movies (Watchmen, Kickass, Ironman, Nolan Batman) the last few years tackle and handle those questions just fine. I'm not saying I want a Bay mouth breather 'splosion fest. You can still write an interesting and intelligent action movie without rehashing a lot of what is overdone at this point.

(My personal wish for the Nolan world)

We see in his Batman movies, Bruce Wayne is willing to step away from vigilantism if he can find a suitable replacement. And what if the threat becomes "too big" for his un-superpowered self. What if the element of the "unrealistic" was brought into the very realistic world of the Nolanverse. Much like the creation of Dr. Manhattan in the Watchmen, once a hero shows up with incredible power, the masked vigilante finds themself of little use. So make the introduction of Superman the "end" of the Bat franchise and the lead in to the Superman reboot. But maybe a sequel or two down the road, make it where Batman has to return and save Supes and show that his real value is in his ability to plan and that he is needed after all. You can always throw in him holding onto some Kryptonite just in case Superman ever goes rogue.

Actually Synapse and I have been puzzling over the dark sets. Just for fun, I'll shed some light on the subject.

So, lets start this with a riddle, since the explanation is just as incomprehensible. Why does Dark Miasma overlapping Dark Control powers make a straight port of Dark Manipulation problematic?

The explanation is, there are a couple powersets that would be sharing an interesting combination of powers. For example, Controllers want Dark Control and Dark Miasma, except Dark Miasma is already a very control heavy set which would supply a lot of Dark Control's powers. Combining Dark/Dark this way could lead to a lot of overlap.

Dominators would want Dark Control and Dark Assault, so Dark Assault would have to be careful not to include control powers from Dark Blast or Dark melee.

Blasters are easier, however the powers that go to blasters would likely be included in Dark Assault, which goes opposite dark control.

Then there are the general AT wide no-no's. Such as: giving armor powers to non-armored classes, or overlapping powers already in patron pools.

So in the end, it's not designing one powerset. It's designing 3 different powersets:

    Dark Control/Dark Miasma for Controllers
    Dark Control/Dark Assault for Dominators
    Dark Blast/Dark Manipulation for Blasters

Well, that's enough "dark" for several posts. And no, nothing is in the works yet.
  8. They opened it up to 10 last year (if memory serves me right they originally did larger numbers but it was pared down in recent decades) to allow more nominations for independents, genre flicks and animated movies.

Edit- It looks like they started doing the 5 picture nominations in 1944 up until last year; before that there didn't seem to be a set number(1934 had 11 and '35 had 12) .

    Fun fact time:

Since 1990 it's only happened 4 times: 1998 (BP: Shakespeare in Love/ BD Steven Spielberg Saving Private Ryan ), 2000 (BP: Gladiator/ BD: Steven Soderbergh Traffic, 2002 (BP: Chicago/ BD: Roman Polanski The Pianist ) and 2005 (BP: Crash/ BD: Ang Lee Brokeback Mountain ).

It only happened twice in the 80s: 1981 (BP: Chariots of Fire/ BD: Warren Beatty Reds ) and 1989 (BP: Driving Miss Daisy/ BD: Oliver Stone Born on the 4th of July )

And only once in the 70s: 1972 (and that was Bob Fosse (Cabaret) beating out Coppola (Godfather part 1) which surprised me.)

So yeah 7 times in 40 years. Although 3 of those times in the last ten, so it could be trending away from that.

  13. It still doesn't make it impossible though. That is all I'm saying. And I'd contend we don't know enough about what's out there to say definitively that it's even that unlikely.

Saying a make believe star system ruins the plausibility of a show with FTL travel (especially how they depict it) is just looking for things to complain about, in my opinion.
  14. Supporting actress:
Should win: Hailee Steinfeld "True Grit"
    Wil win: Melissa Leo

    Supporting actor:
Should win: (Finished Winter's Bone and John Hawkes is a strong contender, but an unlikely win)
Will win: Christian Bale "The Fighter"

    Lead actress:
Should win: : (Leaving blank... going to watch a couple more)
Will win: Natalie Portman "Black Swan"

    Lead actor:
Should win: Jeff Bridges "True Grit" or Colin Firth "The King's Speech"
Will win: Jeff Bridges "True Grit" or Colin Firth "The King's Speech"

    Best Director:
Should win: Darren Aronofsky "Black Swan"
Will win: David Fincher "The Social Network"

    Best Picture:
    Personal Favorite: Inception
Should win based on my personal opinion as to "what best picture is": True Grit (This one surprised me how much I liked it. It looked beautiful and was well acted.)
Likely winner: The Social Network or The King's Speech (One is current and relavent the other is total Oscar bait)
Dark Horse: Winter's Bone (People I know who have seen this have raved how great it is. It's hurt because its a small film and it came out last spring. I'm going to watch it today to see for myself)
  15. Going to go over my predictions and will post them in a bit. In the mean time, can we please avoid the inevitable Oscar hate posts in this thread for a change?
  16. Considering just our galaxy alone has an estimated 200-400 billion stars and there are an estimated 170 billion galaxies in the observable universe, to say that a particular system is "unlikely" still doesn't make it impossible... far from even. They are finding things all the time they used to think impossible and we really only "know-know" a very teeny tiny miniscule small amount about what's out there. So even if something is a stretch, due the the vast scale of the universe, not only could something "unlikely" or "unrealistic" happen in one place, chances are it could be in many many places.

You don't know Troy then. That man is a promotion machine, especially 'round these parts. It's fine to support his cause, we've been doing it for years around here. I, for one, will buy it if I find it.
  19. Both of my high level stalkers are pretty darned good teammates and don't seem any better/worse than my scrappers. I don't really get the hate.
  20. I mouse click my powers; always have. But then again it's what you're used to I guess.
  21. Great episode. This show is probably the most underappreciated show on TV. I will admit the first 5 or so episodes of the first season were slow (making it more of a monster of the week type show), but once they started getting into the overarching plot it has been one of the best shows on television. The people who gave out early sure have been missing out.
