Quote:They aren't, universally. In fact, as stated, if Clouded had said basically what Sam said later, instead of "Oh, but you wouldn't understand, that's just a bad idea" a fair bit of the thread wouldn't have happened.
Why should Clouded, Samuel Tow, et al, be lambasted for speaking their minds?
Quote:I would be interested in knowing what character(s) and what server(s) Hyperstrike, Techbot Alpha, Memphis Bill, et al, played last night. My inclination would be to believe that they weren't in the pool of those who were forced to look elsewhere for entertainment, so what does it matter to them? How many level 4's were you guys playing last night?
(A) Yes, I had to "look elsewhere" for entertainment when the entire game was down.
(B) I have characters on *all* servers. I had some locked out (Pinnacle was down part of the time.) Once I got kicked off of there, I... chose a different server.
And that's part of what I was trying to get across - that "Hey, here's an option for you."
As far as what I played? Partially, a (started as level 8, now 12) 'shade on Pinnacle, a late-teens Stone/Stone tank on Pinn (now up to 22,) 30-ish Emp/Psi on Champion, and after work, my 50 'shade on Victory (edit: until the servers went down again last nght.) Aside from hopping in during breaks to see if things were working when people asked.
Now this proves what to you? I obviously had characters unavailable. Even ones I was playing earlier.
Quote:As for me, my intention was to check the Market on Infinity during the day. I couldn't do that then. -
Quote:There is no "Morally superior" here. Hell, look at YOUR first response to ME - "Terribad suggestion. But I'm sure you wouldn't understand."Look Bill, we obviously aren't liked-minded. You seem to enjoy playing any character no matter the level range or server. I do not. I want to play specific characters and make progression on those characters. If I cannot, then I will complain about this inability.
It's my right as a paying customer to let the service provider know when I am unhappy about the level of service I am receiving.
Please stop trying to act morally superior here. This isn't a case of 'just playing,' but a case of I want to play the characters I WANT to play since I'm a paying subscriber.
What was my suggestion? "Roll something on another server so you can play, then." Y'know, not knowing YOU PERSONALLY, reminding you that you CAN do that and blow off steam by beating up stuff on THAT server (and, who knows, making some other friends) while you wait for your main to come up. That the game was available, and you could take advantage of it.
Now, you COULD have said - basically what Sam did. Really, I read his post and went "Oh. Makes sense. Sucks for you, but makes sense." But no, you seem to think I should psychically know your motivations, and decided to be an *** when I didn't. So don't complain about people "throwing stones." You grabbed a handful pretty fast yourself, bucko. -

Quote:Now, given my general attitude toward the grindtastic nature of the trials and this being part of the "alternate but not really" path, why would you expect blunt, growly me to call them *anything* else?As I said note, you ARE aware that they named them "Weekly Strike Targets" (WST) specifically so people would NOT use the abbreviation WTF, right?
-
Heh. Similar to the OP tonight - except for me it was "Nebulous Form" instead of "Shadow Cloak."
Makes Eclipse FAR less effective. And mire. And when it finally drops the phasing, it drops you too... or at least the pile of bad guys you're in the middle of will. -

Quote:And how many of your characters are you playing during your "limited game time" while your server is down, but others are up?Terrible suggestion. I play only a handful of characters due to my limited game time.
I know, how horrible to give you a suggestion that would actually let you play anyway. Awful thing to do. -
Quote:Which you cannot do if the server is down anyway, so why not play something? A level 1 character stays a level 1 character for what, all of 2 minutes?I don't want to play a level 1 character. I have many 50s, I would like to continue outfitting them with IOs.
Server beign down for an hour, you'd probably be in the early teens. Still down? Run a posi. Mid teens. Look, progress. And you're doing what you (i assume) want to do - play the game.
And you can email yourself resources 8when the servers are back up* if you are worried about lack of INF, etc.
Then when your main server is back up -you can switch back over.
I don't see what's so abhorrent about the concept of *being able to play the game you want to play if your main server is down.* -
Quote:Alt on other server: You playing now.Because it rarely happens and my play time is limited. I seriously play 7 -10 hours a week. If that. I have 20+ alts on Freedom that I want to play. Not to mention I have no resources on other servers. Why should I HAVE to start alts on other servers? Seems like an excuse.
No alt on other server: YOu not playing now.
As for "No resources?" You can email yourself stuff. Doesn't mean you have to jump ship and play only that new alt. It's an *option.* -
Quote:/this.Roll up an alt. Make a sewer run. Hope that the War Walkers don't spawn on your server and kill it.
Seriously, an alt elsewhere won't kill you. It'll give you something to do when, oh, your main server is having issues. Bring friends. Start a superteam or theme team. -
Quote:What really keeps you from branching out JUST for stuff like that? Especially now when inf, items, etc. can be emailed to yourself?Instead, the devs will increase the load on other servers by spawning various events. That would be cool and all if I had characters on other servers. I've been on one server since I started this game and it's frustrating to not be able to play my characters.
Get your friends, form a branch SG somewhere, screw around with it once in a while - then if something happens on Freedom, you have somewhere to fall back to. Start a superteam.
Give yourself options. -
1. To get a level shift, you need at least Tier3 Alpha (which gives a shift that stays with you regardless.)
1a. Tier3 or 4 Lore or Destiny will also give level shifts, but only in Incarnate content. (And it's noted on those powers.) Yes, together in Incarnate content you could be a 50+3.
2. You could do it solo.... it would take prohibitively long, though. Alpha takes a while, especially with multiple characters. Fortunately shards (once you have alpha unlocked) drop from more than just level 50 mobs. Ignoring trials, you could run the WTF (weekly task force,) which would drop a notice of the well, which can convert in to threads, and drop a few shards as well. (I don't recall the entire process you'd have to go through to unlock everything.)
3. Purchasing XP - You get threads. In your Incarnate Powers menu, under Threads, you can turn them in (plus around 1 mill INF) for X amount of iXP.
3a. Is it realistic to do that? If you have the threads (or Astral/Emp merits to convert to threads) and the INF, sure. It's more realistic NOW than it was, as the INF price has gone done. I usually do it at 10% or less left.
3b. Don't do it to unlock Alpha. Run the arc. Why waste good iXP on Alpha? -
Hey, I was on pinn earlier without problems.
Dammit, J_D, what'd you break? Spilled your beer on the server again, didn't you? Or did you roll that keg into a bonfire? Gah! -
I know there is (or was) a Vista/Win7 gadget that read it.
Details on how to do it yourself... couldn't say. -
I'm not laughing at anyone getting kicked, just to be clear.
But I do find that just... amusing in its own way. (And well worth the "Yeah, good job, devs" with full load of sarcasm.) -
Well, looking at ye olde chart... there are limitations to market access and the amount of INF at various levels.
Sell now. *shrug* -
There are very few people doing multiple disciplines - those that are can come up with advances by tying in things "not obvious" to one that's old news to another. (I believe Feynman was like this with matrices... they were known about and unused in a branch of mathematics, sitting around for a few decades at least, and were the precise tool he needed to solve a problem in physics.)
A renaissance (wo)man is, at the simplest, educated in a broad number of disciplines. We may think of something like you mentioned - agriculture, art, biology, etc - but they don't have to be *that* widely ranged.
An *ideal,* to me, would be someone with a good grounding in the sciences, arts and history. Someone who has a full appreciation of (for instance) music and architecture, astronomy, physics, a touch of logic/rhetoric and politics would be fair. Of course, the more overlap the easier it would be to "master" the various areas - someone with an interest in working in stone may have a knowledge (if not education) in geology, be a sculptor, and learn architecture (with an appreciation of historical buildings - history and art.)
Stepping into the more modern realm, you could probably find some without stepping away from a computer - someone doing 3d illustration and animation may have a fairly good grasp of math, of programming (depending on what they do,) of art (lighting, movement, the human figure) and architecture/history (for settings and environments.)
Frankly, I think there are more around (depending on the degree you want to look at) than you may think. The biggest quality (IMHO) would be the willingness - or even more, eagerness and desire - to learn and to expand out of your "comfort zone." -

Quote:Doesn't have to. These whines come up every time the servers are so much as five minutes "late" coming up, or there's emergency maintenance and someone ******* and moans about how they're "entitled" to free time or a refund or what have you. The relevant sections have been quoted fairly frequently.I like how you took the time to read the EULA so you can prove people wrong on the foums.
Not to mention for anything like this it's a fairly standard clause. Why? Because *they cannot guarantee server uptime.* If they could, they'd be running much heavier duty and/or expensive hardware, probably in redundant locations, and making less money (meaning less stuff being developed) or charging much more for the service. It's in there for *every* MMO (or, really, any online game where the publisher hosts the servers, just as much as "online experience may change" is.)
It's the legalese way of saying "Stuff happens that can be out of our control."
It's a game. It's not vital to health or well being. It being down is nothing more than a minor inconvenience. It won't kill you. Neither will getting a little perspective. -
Hopped on Pinnacle, used market, ran mission, no issues. Would've done more, but stuff came in at work.
