  1. I have a Macbook pro, and i tried CoH for a little bit using the 9400M instead of the 9600 (you can run either on the Pro), and it ran pretty good, noticeably better than the old X1600 in my 3 year old Macbook pro... definitely playable... but I didn't do any extensive testing, as it runs much better with the 9600

If you read the first part of my Guide, I stated that the CoH Mac Edition client will run on Intel GMA at Performance setting but "no promises". That's probably why the official requirements suggest "Dedicated Video" and imply the GMA's aren't supported - there are simply too many cases where it might not work. The good news is, it probably will, and I tested it myself on a Mac Mini on the Performance setting.

    [/ QUOTE ]
its only the GMA 950 that isnt supported.. the GMA 3100s are supported.... and "dedicated" video isnt required at all. Even the newer Geforce 9400Ms aren't dedicated video.. they are integrated in the chipset just like (well almost like) Intels, just they are much better.

Which is too bad, because the MacBooks (not "Pro") and minis, which together make up the VAST majority of Mac sales over the last three years or so, use the 950.

I play CoX with a mini connected to my HDTV. I hear a Mac client is finally coming out and think, "great. No more dual-booting."

But now it turns out that the very hardware I've been using for the last two years is not going to be supported??? That to avoid dual-booting to WinXP, I'm going to need to upgrade to a $2800 Mac tower, or buy a $1200 iMac and disable the built-in monitor? Just to play a game which my friends with old $200 PC's are able to run without issue???

It's not like this is an unusal card. Intel's been putting it into plenty of other systems, and it works really well with the Windows client.

When I run the beta client, I find that ENTIRE BUILDINGS AND CARS are simply failing to even get drawn on the screen. Ordinarilly, I would consider this a fairly typical beta kink which they would be likely to take care of, but since they say they are not even supporting my (extremely common) graphics chipset for a game which I ***KNOW*** can handle it, I'm not optimistic.

My initial excitement is waning fast. Good thing I haven't deleted my Windows partition yet.

    [/ QUOTE ]

it is crappy, as there are Cider games out there that run fine with the 950... seems odd they would require a min of the GMA 3100, but support the 950 on Windows... but i dont find it surprising.

I'm hoping to get a new mac mini in January myself... they will have Geforce 9400s in them... I'm glad Apple is ditching Intel chipsets.. well except the mac Pro.. it'll probably stay with Intel chipsets since it uses Xeons.

does everyone with the bug have an unsupported video card like yours? Not surprising there is issues with the GMA 950s...

    [/ QUOTE ]

I don't know why you think there should be issues with the GMA 950. My Mac mini has been working GREAT when dual-booting to Windows XP to play CoX over the last year.

Frankly, I don't understand why the system requirements are so steep as to exclude this card. The exact same hardware works fine with the Windows client. CoX isn't really all that challenging of a game for a graphics card to handle most of the time.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I think it'll work, sure.. i just wouldn't be surprised if there are issues, as they chose to not have it as a supported graphics device... it might have bugs with Cider and transgaming doesn't want to fix or cant fix easy and told them not to support it... no idea, just that its not supported, leads me to think there many be some issues.

#2...anytime i need to click and drag something....whther it be moving an icon over or adjusting my zoom...my mouse (touchpad) shoots over to the top lefthand corner...

this happens to me using Cedega in Linux (which is what Cider that this 'port' uses is based off of) and it happens to me occasinally in this Mac Beta... but it never stays.. when it does shoot to the corner its when i first try to move it, and it always lets me place it where i want after that....

ehh.. cider causes all kinda problems trying to switch between different monitors with different resolutions... just gonna forget worrying about getting it perfect... CoH always has to be a hard set resolution even in a window, no way to change without restarting CoH, which makes it too tricky... would be nice if we could start CoH in a window, and resize it on the fly... but i doubt they'll modify the code for that.

So here is a question, how will bind files work with the Mac Version? How does one load bind files with the MAC directory structure?

    [/ QUOTE ]
its the Windows code, in a standard mac ".app" Since .app files are really folders, you just have to look inside, you can even find the Windows .exe files in there... it has the same folder structure there as the normal Windows client, and should be able to do it exactly the same as you would on Windows (there is fake C drive inside the file under the transgaming folder)

I was meaning the OS for Macs is 64 bit. I didn't know if the game would be 64 bit enchanced.
    That is all.

    [/ QUOTE ]
well, Leopard has some 64 bit support kinda rigged in, but OSX for the most part is still a 32 bit OS... thats one of the big changes in Snow Leopard, is true 64 bit OS.... but it doesnt matter as this is a Cider port, which only supports 32bit, and it runs the Windows client code, which is 32-bit.

Actually, MS'es "I'm a PC" ad's show that like their users, theres a wide variety of PC's of all shapes, sizes, and flavors, and can't be summed as a single image.

weird... all they've showed me is PCs are all the same substance with different appearances...

2: I find this amusing, considering that Apple's whole marketing scheme lately is to imply that PC Users are overweight, neurotic middle-aged men.

    [/ QUOTE ]

another person, like everyone at MS, that doesn't understand the commercials? The commercials aren't about users, like MSes "I'm a PC" junk. The commercials are just people representing the computer, its the computer that's talking to you, not the person using the computer. They show "PC" as a persona of the commonly thought of business type of look... they say nothing about the actual users.

If I buy/pre-order the Mac version right now, will I get a code that I can use right away on the open beta, or will I have to wait for the actual release? I'd like to shake off the trial restrictions, but I'd prefer not to spend the money at this moment if I can't use the code straight away.

    [/ QUOTE ]
I dont think you actualyl get the code to apply it, and get the rwards, til the released version is 'shipping' .. so no.. you wont be able to use any of it til beta is over

Finally! I've been running coh through bootcamp for so long, it's going to be nice not to have to pay for virus protection, the latest windows os (in addition to the latest mac os), etc. Quick question, I've been playing a character through a windows client for a few weeks. Will I be able to continue using that character using the mac client?

after the beta is over on the same server your character is already on.... as long as you use the same account, its the same characters

The thing is, running under Trasganing, there is no "Mac only" version of the game, like Spore, Transgaming enables Windows versions to work on the Mac using translation libraries, similar to how Linux binaries run on FreeBSD.

At least now, we'll have a clean port, instead of some bugs being apparent through Crossover and Parallels.

    -Pax

    [/ QUOTE ]

a clean port? they aren't even really porting it, its just Cider, which is based off the same thing Crossover uses, its just all built in and tested better. If its like other games that have used Cider, there will be Cider specific bugs found that need to be fixed.

Please read what I was replying to. I'm all for the Mac version of COH, great idea
and I already pre-ordered it. I was replying to the guy that said he had to buy a
PC to play COH even though he wanted a Mac. That part makes no sense. He
could have bought a Mac and had it all in one machine.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I did, it just wasn't very clear of your meaning... sounded more like you were replying to the statement about mac users being able to join the fun, rather than the statement about buying a PC. When you make a undirected reply to a statement, it is assumed it is to the major point of the statement and not a minor point, unless you direct it more. he started talking about mac users being able to play CoH now, so it sounded like you were saying they always have been, and there is no point to the mac version... but after you reexplained yourself, i see what your real point was.
  19. [ QUOTE ]

This makes no sense. Mac users have been able to play COH for a couple years. Intel Macs
can use BootCamp to install any Windows and play COH or anything else on Windows.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Like I'm going to waste my hard drive space and money to install Windows on my Mac in order to play some game, and not be able to do anything else but boot into windows and just play one game... I primarily use Macs, and its one of the reasons I stopped playing many games I used to. I multitask everything, heck my Mac is usually running my TV so i can watch that while playing stuff too, along with many other things (multitasking rules)... its not a machine whose sole purpose is gaming. With a Cider version, I'll probably play CoH a lot more now and not let my account lapse for many months at a time. My current Windows PC can run CoH fine, but I don't plan on ever replacing it, or fixing it if it breaks... my next computer purchase in a year or so will be upgrading my Mac. More than likely, I'll continue to only play games i can run on OSX. (though the new Star Wars MMORPG could tempt me to buy a windows license and use boot camp when it comes out if they don't do a Mac version)
  20. I reactivated my account and started playing again yesterday just cuz i know I'll be able to play on my Mac soon... yaay!

It would be nice if they made a Linux version like they did for Eve, but i dont see much money in it, Linux is not able ot be tracked in usage very well. They dont mind doing Macs cuz they see the numbers, and with hitting 9.5 % of the US computer market in sales last quarter, it makes sense, especially since they are just gonna run the Windows code with Cider.
