Psi-Cops....it's been done *coughBabylon5cough*
Do any of them stand around and say "The Corp is mother....the Corp is father" -
Nice thread! I've been pulling since EQ and I love all the ways pulling fits into various games.
I've seen it mentioned elsewhere but not here that if you have a low-damage attack that has some travel time, you can do the shoot then duck for cover thing, which works fine if it hits after you are out of sight....but it is noted that if it is a MISS then the foe doesn't wait for the arrival of the missed shot to react, but reacts instantly (in other words, while you are still standing there in line of sight.
Therefore it is important that such an attack be pretty accurate. I'm currently a level 11 Grav/Psi Dominator in CoV (Mistress Maelstrom) and use the level 1 Psionic Dart as a useful pulling shot.
Back when I was in CoH as Mask of Pain (MA/SR Scrapper, I've been away from CoX for a while) I used to use Teleport Foe for pulling.
Since I'm a compulsive soloer, pulling is very handy.
Pulling is an art that is often underappreciated except by those who realize how awesome it is. Though I confess that pulling a dragon with 72 people waiting out of sight, it was always a source of interesting chat logs to say something like "oops!" or "oh dear..."(/me confesses to enjoying the heck out of a monumental wipe.) If you are going down, go down spectacularly
Pullers Do Not Fear Death. -
wonderful idea!!!
WoW had leather balls that was part of the crafting tree, and people would toss em around all the time. Great fun.
It gives people something to do to break up the grind and just goof around. -
Approach to pulling will probably depend on their experiences with pulling in previous games. I was pulling for dragon and planar raids back in EverQuest as a monk...so I think pulls automatically. I think it's a matter of understanding the game mechanics of the current game and changing the approach to fit.
I've always been protective of my solo time. I like to get out on my own and take things on. In CoH I was a Martial Arts/Super Reflexes Scrapper (monk) and had some limited success with pulling and enjoyed "teleport foe" a great deal. Then I took some time off for other games.
Now I'm reactivated with the CoH/CoV combo and am trying a Grav/Psi Dominator. (I have this habit of trying builds then reading afterwards how flawed everyone says they are.) I'm relearning pulling as much as a survival tactic as for grouping, which I haven't done much of. Crowd Control powers aren't much lower levels so thinning the herd helps a lot.
I'm at work so I forget exactly but the Psi secondary has a mind dart or something that pulls nicely. Plus it seems to take a measurable period of time to head to the target. I have found that if I set it loose at max range and just back up while it's in the air, I am pretty much guaranteed to be out of range of the minion and he will run to me rather than attack, even without being around a corner. Being outside the "alert" range (when they stop shuffling and stand at attention) seems to be enough. As pointed out, the missed shot does bring multiples.
A feeling for pulling is also useful for teaching you about aggro radius, which is good for travelling even without stealth powers.
It's impossible to enter a new game without a lot to learn. But some things about judgement and tactics you can bring from game to game. -
I'm also back after about the same length of time, used to have a MA/SR Scrapper (even back then people laughed about that build but I had fun) now I got CoV added on for the same price, and am refreshing my memory with a Gravity/Beam Dominator. It's weird but fun...love the look of the new zones. Outdoor missions! I was sent into a door on a boat, and immediately ejected...went "in" again a few times, then realized that I actually was in a private walled off instance of that part of Mercy Island as a mission, complete with boats, dock, shoreline and buildings. How cool is that? Do they have that in CoH now too?
What are the purple swirly vortexes?
Anyway, having a really good time getting back into it.
