Quote:Is the problem that all the forums are now nested...if it is, try bookmarking the expanded (unnested) English forum (http://boards.cityofheroes.com/forumdisplay.php?f=547). Or are you looking to change something in your CP and are not sure where to find it? If that's the case, post what you're trying to do and I'm sure someone can point you in the right direction.Ugh! I use to post and follow the forums all the time!
Now, It's not even really worth the effort.
Everything is hidden under 725 menu options, and it's horrible..
So once again, GG or something.
I'm sure someone awesome will post to my I HATE THE NEW FORUMS post, but who cares...
I heard the boys who are fans stand over there to the left..
GG
Also, PhiloticKnight posted a really good guide for the new forums. I'm not sure if it'll be helpful to you or not, but it's there should you need it.
P.S. Not really a fangirl, but I do feel these boards have far more freedom and customization than the old boards. However, they do have a bit of a learning curve and take some getting used to. And at the moment, they aren't 100% perfect and think there's some adjusting that the community reps should do (like the horrid gradient skin and lack of contrast...thanks to those issues, spending too long reading the forums gives me headaches). Bottom line, if there's any way I can help someone who is having difficulty adjusting, I'm more than happy help out where I can. -
Oooooh...that sounds like fun RG! My guess is that Somber would be interested in checking it out. I might be interested too (we can definately do one donation, but two donations is dependent on how things shape up at work between now and October).

Quote:I hope that my welcome in another thread didn't get taken the wrong way. Please know that it was more so intended as a "Welcome to boards.cityofheroes.com, it's great to finally have everyone together where they belong" rather than a "Welcome to OUR boards." I also feel that the "majority rules" mentality is definitely the wrong way to go. To not seek understanding about others' cultures and to demand that a different culture bend to the dominant culture is closed-minded and I just cannot get behind that way of thinking.I don't know.. it seems to me that this 'understanding cultural differences' is turning into a 'majority rules' kind of mentality, where of course the US are the majority and everyone else is a minority.
To be honest i'm thinking of never posting on these boards again, it's not like I'll be missed or anything what with all these Americans stating 'welcome to OUR boards' everywhere i look.. To be honest I don't feel welcome at all as they obviously just see this forum as THEIR place (Ok, generalising, but i've seen it a lot). I miss the EU boards. This place is alien and just feels unwelcoming and plain wrong.
Run by Americans, for Americans
Hope you continue posting Kallandra...every time we loose a positive poster, the forums become a lesser place. -
Quote:When I saw GrinningSpade's name, I thought of cards or a gardening tool. As with Impish, this was the first time that I've ever heard that "spade" could be considered a derogatory word. In fact, I had to look it up on urbandictionary.com to see exactly what the big deal was about (BTW, it notes that the term was "more commonly used in the post-Civil War era than today"). To the best of my knowledge, that word is just not used on the west coast of the US in that sort of context.Hmmm.... I am *cough* over 40 years of age, have lived in over a dozen different cities in 4 different states on the US West Coast, and attended a half dozen different schools. I'm familiar with several racial slurs aimed at various nationalities, but I have NEVER heard "spade" used as a racial epithet.
I honestly hope GrinningSpade gets to keep his name. To me, having him change his name because it can carry a negative connotation in *some* (not all) areas of the US is just as rediculous as if my friend Fanny were hypothetically told she has to change her name because her name means something else in the EU. We all should just remember that something that a player posts may not necessarily carry the same meaning across the pond and work together to try to understand one another...not divide ourselves by making one culture bend to another culture's standards. -

Quote:That's what I'm doing right now and it's not exactly a preferable option. I'm not suggesting that signature images should be disabled all together, as I'm all for people being able to express their creativity in their signatures if they so choose.Niv, is there going to be any way to disable *just* the images in the signature sometime in the future? I don't mind seeing posters' text signatures and I don't mind seeing images in the body of a post...but signature images are a little too much for my taste (most especially when someone only types a line of text in the body of the post and the rest of the post is taken up by a huge signature image that I've seen a million times).
But by the same token, those who do not want to scroll past endless signature images should also be able to block them if they so choose. I'm voicing my feedback that an additional option would be most welcome for those who want to see images in a post's body and text-only signatures, but want to block out just signature images. -

Nice! Thanks bunches NCSoft!

Either disable them or turn the size limits way down as I'm getting sick of seeing so many posts where the sig is taller than the actual content of the post.

TA, when I read your overview for this month's FArt, I couldn't help but think of this pic that I took at last year's HeroCon!

Now that I've had a chance to get my feet wet in the new forums, I have to say that overall, I am very happy and impressed with the new forums. As I spend more time on the boards, it's becoming increasingly evident that there is a lot more options and customization that can be done with the new software compared to the old...and for me, more options is definitely a good thing. My general likes and dislikes are as follows:
LIKES
- The forums look and feel far more modern than the old boards. The background image ties in well with the game's overhauled main web page. And no more moving images at the top (characters bobbing up and down always bugged me).
- I actually really like the nested forum format, as it enables me to click on exactly what I want to look at without having to scroll through a bunch of stuff that I don't want to look at. But I also like that that an expanded version of the forum is available for those who want the expanded forum and for times that I feel like browsing.
- The forum expands to widescreen! No more black along the sides of my screen anymore...yay!
- The private message summary at the top of the forum. It gives great information and is non-invasive (that blinking red envelope drove me mad).
- The search function! It's so much more efficient that the search function from the old boards! Lots of stuff I can tweak to get the results that I want. And it's really handy that it tells you exactly how much time you have to wait until you can perform another search.
- Social groups, as it gives subgroups that do not have their own forum (like supergroups) a place to mingle and plan events.
- The ability to finally include images in your post! It's nice to not have to click on a bunch of links to see our players' creativity. Plus, I think this will help take some of the burden off of our online community reps from having to post event flyers and such for posters. If someone posts an image that's against the forum rules...well, that's what the report post function is for!
- Speaking of the report post function, it's really nice being able to include an explaination of exactly why we are reporting a post
- I actually think the reputation system is pretty neat, as it's nice to see actual feedback on my posts (whether positive or negative).
- The full WYSIWYG editor is far more intuitive than the post editor in the old forums.
- I've mentioned this before, but I'll include it again so everything is consolidated...my major complaint with the new forums is that there is just not enough contrast between text and the skins. It's very fatiguing on the eyes and after awhile, everything starts to just blur together. And as a person who is migraine-prone, it's no fun when you get a headache after reading the forums for an extended period.
- The smilies! The ones available don't mesh well with the skin due to their white outlines. And I really miss the old smilies (most especially petulant mad-face
). I know this is something in the pipeline to get fixed, but still wanted to included it in my feedback.
- The grey background on the avatars. Those of us who are still using our 80 x 80s have that ugly grey bar at the top of their avatar. And those with transparent avatars (like Altoholic_Monkey's avie) are in an even worse situation.
- Signature images...just don't like them (particularly when someone with a sig image posts a one line post). I'm among those who would like the option to turn off signature images while keeping images in the body of the post turned on.
- The full WYSIWYG editor is not set as the default. There's a lot of posters who are not fully versed in BB code and the WYSIWYG editor is really great in helping them format their posts. These are likely going to be the same folks who will not know what options are available and how to change them. I think it'd be better to have the WYSIWYG editor as the default and should any posters wish to simplify their editor, the option is still there.
- There's no way to change date formatting. I'd really like to see an option added to our CP so our European players can change their date format from MM-DD-YYYY to DD-MM-YYYY.

Quote:They're working on it.DEv digest and Community digest links are broken. You cant seem to use them. Is there a technical reason why they are broken or I cant use them.

Quote:TheOcho indicated in a post last week that they're working on bringing the Dev and Community Digests back and anticipate to have them back soon.Any plans to get the Dev and Community Digests working again? They were the most useful parts of the forums for me - if they're going away, I have much less reason to visit these forums...

Quote:To do what you want, you'll want to run an advanced search (click search, then advanced search) and use the following criteria:Search by user seems to be completely broken. As a test, I tried searching for Arcanaville's posts, because I know she's a prolific poster. The list comes up, but when you click on any of the links it takes you to the first post, not the post by the user you searched for.
Search by User Name: Arcanaville
Show Results as: Posts
This will give you a list of all the posts that Arcanaville has posted, with links to the actual post. If you have "Threads" selected in the "Show Results as" section, it'll list the *threads* that she's posted in (which if you click on the links, will take you to the first post of the thread as you describe above).
EDIT - Just saw Stargazer's post above...didn't know that...thanks for the handy advice! -
Quote:Looking over the list of BB Codes that are available to us, it does not look like we have access to anything that do something similar to the [code] tag. Hopefully, they'll add it in sometime in the near future, but in the interim, I suppose you can create the table in a spreadsheet, make an image out of it and include the image via the [IMG] tag. It's unfortunately a little more work, but it'll at least get you the desired result.I've tried that, but it doesn't let me do things that respect white space. As an example I want to make a table that shows the accuracy buffs of higher rank mobs:
Rank Accuracy
Minion +00%
Lieutenant +15%
Boss +30%
AV +50%
Everything gets smashed together. That's what the [code] tag was great for. If you can show me a way to get the forums to not ignore whitespace, I'm all ears. -
The NA after your name stands for North America. It means that there was a name conflict during the forum merge with someone from the European servers. Per TheOcho's post at the top of this forum, this is a temporary measure and they'll be resolving name conflicts once they make sure the forum update has gone through smoothly.
Quote:4. It looks updated, sure, but more compartmentalized or something. I liked everything on one scrollable page. -
I use www.photobucket.com. The others that I can think of off the top of my head is www.imageshack.us and www.flickr.com.

Quote:I'm *very* surprised that there isn't an option in the Date & Time Options section of the CP to be able to view the date in DD-MM-YYYY instead of MM-DD-YYYY. If there is any way to add such an option in, I'd love to see it added for our EU players. The Timezone settings don't work.
As in, I'm stuck seeing all the dates in American format.
I keep thinking that the calander has suddenly aquired 13 extra months from somewhere, until I remember some numpty went and screwed up the setting. Again.

Teh Boyfriend and I (and the teams were were on too) were having intermittent problems throughout the day. Completely frustrating.

Got my Fire/Kin from level 21 to 35. Yay Fire Imps!

Quote:I have to concur. After giving the boards a little time, I've found that the contrast (or lack thereof) is really harsh on my eyes...and if I spend too long on the boards, it'll trigger a migraine. A darker background that gives us more contrast would be most welcome.Well, after spending the weekend with the forums, I've concluded that I find it difficult on my eyes. The post's background needs to be darker to offer more contrast. The white text on "bright" just makes everything blur after a while and I find myself squinting.

Oh, a quick reminder to everyone...while the port to the new forum software is likely permanent, the current set-up of the forums is probably not 100% set in stone. It appears that the main goal for COH's Online Community Relations during the forum update/merge was to get everything ported over to the new forum software in one piece. Once they're sure that everything with the new software is working smoothly, they'll be addressing other issues with the boards (i.e. resolving name conflicts, changing the emoticons, improving readability, changing which forum features will remain and which ones will be disabled, etc). They're currently taking feedback for what posters like/dislike about the new setup and will likely be adjusting the current settings based on our feedback. If you like or dislike a forum feature, the layout, etc, make sure you post your feedback in the official thread...

No worries, these smilies are not permanent. We'll be getting more awesome ones later...

In the interim, if you want to add the old smilies to one of your posts, see PhiloticKnight's post here...
