Quote:I get what your saying very much.At this point, rumours are just that: rumours. I choose to be hopeful until the servers go dark or until we have some other form of concrete news. With it being Labour Day in the US, I doubt very much that we will hear anything concrete in either direction (assuming we ever do) until tomorrow.
Honestly, right now I think I'll take what I can get.
I am hoping for a VERY special birthday present tomorrow. -

First time I ever got a code like this!!
34RV-5D39-R5K8-KRGP-NMP9
P.S. What is this? -

Quote:It is a lot of people's current perception that this was a rash decision for tax reason. They needed to end it officially to to get taxed on it.... but ...
(I've got to backup this whole conjecture.)
One wonders why, this:
* surprise announcement of "We're shutting CoX down. Devs, Martha will bring you your pink slips this afternoon."
instead of this:
* Press Release: "NCSoft is refocusing it's priorities, and it's acclaimed and profitable City of Heroes MMO is up for sale. We will be considering all offers and hope to choose one that pleases the fans, the CoX developers, and NCSoft stockholders."
I'm hoping that there are offers from folks who want to keep this game and Paragon Studios going. ... but I can't help wondering why NCSoft would kick the puppy before selling it.
The game wasn't making a lot of money but was in profit, which is a fact.
They are in the red, which is fact.
CoH was the 2nd least profitable game they were producing, which is fact.
So they opted to get rid of their oldest and 2nd least profitable game to help mitigate the losses of their newer games, and probably had to do it NOW to not get taxed. -
Quote:I a practical man. I am very thankful for what they have done thus-far baring the F2P. However I have had a very emotional connection to my IRL friends that have joined around this game and the characters I have played. I have also been around long enough to know that new is not always bad or good, and in any situation it should be a wait and see, especially when there is little you can do about it.So we've established that you folks don't actually care about the developers of the game - it really comes down to you getting your CoH fix. Evidence: My question elicited responses of "ONOZ THEY MIGHT CHANGE THINGS", not "That'd be freakin' BS! Those poor devs!"
So much for the sense of community.
Personal Example: Somewhere over the rainbow
Original
New
Personally, I think the new one actually surpassed the original, but that is just me.
Yes I would wish we could have the original developers, and we would be better off for it. The fact that the bid came in only an hour after the game went down, that gives me high hopes. -

At that point a status of "Lets see what happens" is best. Maybe they will improve it? Who knows.

Plus Paragon Studios would need to buy the IP and code back, which they probably would not be able to get the money for a very long time.
-
Quote:Plus, wasn't already established that CoH was making money, just not enough for NCSoft? With 1999's original Everquest still going and getting game updates, I'm not sure how low SOE really sets their profit requirements for older games.
And CoH isn't some new game they've invested millions in only to be let down when it doesn't match WoW's numbers - anyone who buys CoH knows exactly what they're getting - a polished, stable, well-loved MMO classic that's been consitently profitable over the years, with its own unique space in the MMO marketplace, one of the most dedicated and passionate player bases of any type of game, and a well-established hybrid subscription model. -
I saw that, and already posted my reply. I don't think it would ever happen. It is completely out of character for the company.

Sorry to rain on the parade here, but this would never happen.
Blizzard only produces games rated 5/5 stars before production. There has been a number of games, such as the Starcraft Ghost shooter/staking game that only got 4/5 stars and got canned (Even though it was a totally completed game).
Blizzard is the only game company in history that does this, and succeeds. At best we would see CoH2 in a long number of years, due to production, and even if they go to produce it, there is a VERY good chance the game would not make it into distribution because of this. Blizzard may have the money, but they probably don't rate this dated game a 5/5 by their standards.
Best wishes though,

Quote:Could be that they want the system itself for a later game not even to revive CoH. CoH gameplay and specifically its character creation is revolutionary in itself. This does make the rumored offer a little weird - however, DCUO is pretty much a console game with a PC port as an after thought - they could be looking at having 2 separate superhero games targeted at 2 different markets, and 2 differnt play styles - one a console based acton focus beat-'em-up, the other a "classic" PC MMO.
Also, with EQ 1 and 2 boith going, and SWG shut down only becasue LucasArts decided not to renew the license to let the Tortanic sail the SW MMO sea by itself, there might even be the possibility of greater security in the SOE stable than the NCSoft one.
Plus, the Station Pass raises some interesting revenue and player increase possibilities. -

Quote:True True!If the character base is lost and I have to start all over, I'm perfectly fine with that. I've been cataloging my characters ever since the news broke. I can understand why some would not want to do that, however, but to me that is a price I would be more than willing to pay. If anything, such an event might strengthen the community in a way - we'd all start together at the bottom, so we'd meet new people we might not have otherwise encountered, and have the chance to grow with a whole new set of friends while still keeping the old.

Quote:I know, but at this point anything but EA might be better than nothing. That would piss me off. I vowed to never give SOE another dollar of my money after SWG, and I won't break that vow.
IF SOE bought CoH then this would probably include reforming of Paragon Studios too. The problem with that is time. They are already looking for new jobs. -
It has come to my attention that the rumor I personally started appears to be false. I am sorry, however this does not mean that other companies may be actively looking into the game. This was confirmed by President of SOE, John Smedley's twitter page that they are not attempting to buy the game. I had hoped personally that my information I had gleamed was true, however it appears obviously to not be. Again, I am terribly sorry.
Thank you,

Fresh from the rumor mill. I am IRL looking to get into the Game Design busness, and have had teachers who are and were in the field. They have connections. I talked with one of them a few minutes ago and this is what one of them told me they heard.
About an hour after the announcement of the end to City of Heroes, SOE and one other game publisher already made a generous bid for the game. (There probably has been more after that though)
Now this does not mean anything, as perhaps NCSoft might not want to sell it for any reasonable price to prevent competition, as they have done so in the past. However if this does happen quickly this will probably mean the re-forming of Paragon Studios.
So I thought I might keep peoples hopes up a little as this MIGHT not be the end. Sorry if this is just purely a rumor as it might. Also equally sorry if the offers, assuming are real, does no bar fruit.
Here's Hoping,
-MCM
P.S. We might get word as soon as Tuesday! That will be the first full work day since Paragon Studios got canned. So I might get the world's most lucky gaming birthday gift LOL! (I was born on the 4th). -
I hate it when a Sci-Fi flick tries to save money by Disguising aliens as a human or humans with very simple accessories. It shows real decay. I hope to never see them again, but I imagine we will probably be seeing these human daleks for the most part from now on.
