Quote:Clearly you've never heard of the figure-head ploy. Leave someone weaker in charge, so THEY have to deal with harassment from the 'Hero' types that feel the need to force their ideals among others. They get to deal with the headaches, and you are left free to enjoy whatever it is about being a Villain that got you into this. But then if you're that much more powerful than him, why wouldn't you go and take over Paragon City? or leave the Rogue Isles and carve out your own evil territory? It's still coming back to the problem of the game telling you you're the most powerful villain in the world, but then telling you you have to stay in the Rogue Isles and watch a pathetic no-mark like Recluse rule them.
-
Quote:Not really, since not every Villain wants to take over the world. Hell, many don't even want Arachnos at all. Back when City of Villains was still in development and before Arachnos was ever announced the big speculation would be to join any of the existing Villain factions. Some people really wanted to be Freakshow, because they preferred anarchistic destruction. Some wanted to join the Council/5th because they would rather be Nazi style evil. Some wanted to be a part of the Family because they enjoyed the 'business' of Villainy. But wouldn't that still make villains feel like second rankers? Like they'd be called Recluse's equal, but the game would still stop them from trying to replace him. Reclsue took over Arachnos, so why can't the player villains try taking it over from him?
Or is there a really, really good in-game lore reason we could maybe come up with here to explain away the restriction?
Instead we get stuck with Arachnos, who actually fails at Villainy completely and we can't even be at all important. I remind you, that Recluses major in-game plans are "get someone else to defeat Statesman" and "use something someone else invented to force the time line so no matter what I do Statesman will lose"
And while this is very likely a waste of keystrokes on my part, since you seem to be ignoring the question, but I'm still going to try again: Do you think you would enjoy City of Heroes nearly as much if it insulted you, belittled your accomplishments, and in general treated you like a Hollywood-stile rent-a-cop throughout the game? -
Ruling Heaven---Serving in Heaven---Ruling Hell---Serving in Hell.
You need to work on your definition of 'half-way'.
Quote:But is the only problem the way the contacts talk to you? Like if they said "please", "thank you" and called you "sir", would that make villains feel better?
NPC Heroes like Positron are respected around the world, while NPC Villains are seriously considered as a global threat to peace if not life itself. Player Heroes, can eventually reach the same level of respect, even getting a congratulations and thank you from Statesman himself. Meanwhile, Player Villains are never treated any differently than a Blood Brother Brawler. -
Quote:This is where your willful ignorance shines. Since you have refused to step foot in Rogue Isles you aren't aware that the majority of the plots in City of Villains actually DO work. We do keep Council Vampyres out of Port Oaks. We do convert the young hero Pyriss to Villainy. We do fight and defeat all of the Vindicators AND the Freedom Phalanx, both separately and en-masse.But what you're asking for is for your own constant failure and incompetence - if villains can't affect the game world, then their schemes will always have to end in total failure - your plan to take over the world, or build a moon laser to wipe out Paragon Ciity, or empty the vaults at Fort Knox will always end in 100% failure, because success would mean the game world would have to change, and failure would keep the game world as it is.
Right now, the game lets you successfully kill, kidnap, rob and destroy while working for Arachnos - you're given various evil tasks, and you carry them out with 100% success.
Would it really be more fun to swap you career of successful evil for one of failed evil just because Recluse won't say "please" or "thank you" or invite you round for a beer to watch the game?
And after each grand task, we move on to the next person...who still treats us like common slime fresh out of the Zig. Player Character Villains are generally on the same level as Player Character Heroes. It's just as easy for Villains to steamroller over entire armies of enemies. Yet, we are never given even a fraction of the respect that Heroes get on their path. The contacts always have this nebulous power behind them that is often not even defined or named, just that everyone EVERYONE knows that the Player Villain is not, can not, and will never be a threat.
Tell me, would you be as staunch a defender of City of Heroes if it insulted your intelligence and abilities at every turn, and every level?
EDIT: Out of my examples, only one of them, fighting the Phalanx en-masse, has anything to do with Arachnos. And yet, it's still the Player being ordered like a low rent lackey. -
Then again, this is why I adjust colors even when it's something that's not going to be seen.
-
What I find funny is that I really like the reversed colors look. Unfortunately, the character I have that I would really like to see go through the reversal...is a villain. And not soon to budge morally, either.

Quote:We have to accept the game set up, yes. We don't have to like it, and it's not a good way to make a game, just because that's how it was made.As for how independent a Villain can be in the game, I think you'll have to accept that you're always going to have Recluse as a boss in some form or another, because that's the way the game's been designed and set up.
Quote:But being an enforcer for him could be made into a better experience - like he trusts you enough to give you pretty much a free hand - so you can still be a bad *** villain without totally being your own boss. Like Darth Vader was just an enforcer for the Emperor, but he was still a totally bad *** villain, so maybe more freedom along that line might make red side players happier?
Honestly, I think that just a change of tone for many of the contacts would do wonders, and it would be a lot easier. We would just like a little more:
Quote:Oh, hey! I know who YOU are! Listen, I got a line on something I just KNOW you're going to love.
Quote:YOU THERE! MINION! FETCH ME MY COFFEE AND A BAGEL! -
Quote:Exactly. It still had GRASS. Granted the lack of huge piles of trash everywhere may be more the Devouring Earth's doing rather than Arachnos, but it's STILL cleaner than most of the rest of the game.It still has that faded, dirty looking evil grass though, instead of the bright, clean heroic grass that's on the other side of the fence
Quote:Maybe that could be a new VEAT - an Arachnos Sanitation Offcier? Like Reclsue could be trying to find the person destined to clean up the Rogue Isles, and as you complete arcs and missions where you have to empty dumpsters, scrub off graffiti and unblock the sewer system, you'd see actual changes to the zones, with the current landfill look being retextured into something cleaner.
Sure, you'd still be working for Recluse, but at least your actions would be having an actual impact on the game world
B) Even those few that ARE cool with the idea of working for Arachnos aren't playing this game to be a damn garbage man. Hell that's the reason why I refuse to play Terrance Dobbs even though that means I don't get access to the (in my opinion) much better contact Dr Forrester. Dobbs is a level 40 contact that is nothing more than Dale Gribble from King of the Hill. His only concern is killing bugs, and being the only one that's good at killing bugs (with the help of the player). Granted, the bugs are over seven feet tall and walk erect, but the slightest hint of intrigue and it's "Oop, better leave that be. Don't care what they are, as long as someone pays me to lay the bug traps. -
Quote:Hell, the Abyss is still a vast improvement over most of CoV as far as cleanliness goes.I know - but like I said, it's an art style choice, and the Abyss didn't really show they were planning on changing it either.
Quote:Also, another problem is that what you're asking for would need an actual change to the zone geometry to remove the landfill look - which would involve way more work than just adding brighter grass or brick textures to the existing surfaces. -
Quote:Again, you can do Grim and hopeless without having people live in a trash heap. Those that have seen the entire Paragon City know that there is considerably more to it than just what the AE has to offer, and those that have actually seen the entire Rogue Isles know that the same can be said for those maps. And yes, every zone, including just off screen of the Grandville tower map has the people in the Rogue Isles living in a landfill. Not over top a closed one, living amongst piles of trash on fire.Well, ignoring the fact you've just said that you only need to look at mercy island to know what the entire CoV game world looks like, there's also the fact that the AE contains more than one red side outdoor map
The Rogue isles have been designed with a particular art style to make them feel grim and hopeless - it's not like that's just the way that it happened to turn out - and as they designed the art style to match the lore, unless they're planning a major villain lore revamp, then the red side zones aren't going to change their look.
Even the newest single faction zone added to the game, the Abyss, keeps with that style, so it's seems it's still their intention to keep the Rogue Isles looking the way they do now.
Grim and gritty doesn't have to mean filthy. -
Quote:Maybe it's his reclusive lifestyle? One weird thing I've been wondering about is that when he seems so big on the dark gleaming techno evil look, his actual outfit is strangely dirty and faded looking - like his armor plates are scratched and battered looking, when I'd have thought he'd have some sort of sleek dark chrome texture on them.
I think his outfit actually looks pretty cool and menacing, but the textures and colors just seem to make it less cool and evil looking than it could be.
Quote:No need to do that - the MA lets me tour parts of the Rogue Isles in safety
And from what I've seen, it does look pretty bleak and hopeless - but it's also a consistent look, and fits the lore of the Rogue Isles pretty well. -
Quote:Well of course Lord Recluse's home would look decent. But aside from the giant casino pyramid, it's really the only area. I know you can't stand the idea of playing the game, but I would seriously suggest you roll up a Stalker, skip the tutorial, and just look around Mercy with hide running. Then realize that the entire game looks like that.I think Grandville looks very impressive on the STF - the tower's huge
EDIT: Heck, you yourself have promoted exploration in this very thread, so consider this your chance to explore something new. You don't have to take mission one, heck the Hide power is good enough you don't have to even engage in a fight, just take a look, and see what people are complaining about. -
Quote:You know, you can still have 'dark and gritty' and still look good at it. Many incarnations of Gotham City pull that off well. It's dark, cramped, shadowy and menacing, but it still looks iconic, and impressive. The Rogue Islands looks like someone lit a landfill on fire.I really don't think the Rogue Isles will get a nicer look - especially as they've now retconend Praetoria to be a gleaming futuristic place, instead of the run down ruined dump that we've seen in the current Praetorian arcs - if they'd still gone with that look for GR, then it's posisble they might have changed the look of the Rogue Isles to make the two places more distinctive - but with GR now giving us a shiny techno evil setting, I think the Rogue Isles will remain as the dark and gritty evil setting.

Quote:Yeah, ain't gonna happen. This is Golden Girl after all, who won't do anything as evil as not tipping at a restaurant.Specifically, look up the MA arc "DIY Moonbase" by @Twoflower. It shouldn't be hard to find: it's a HOF/Dev Choice arc, right up there at the top of the list. The contact is an underling who provides you with information and assistance, and at the end of the arc you're up one moon base, just as advertised. Of course, you don't really have a moonbase. But then, you also didn't really save Statesman from Tyrant; he's still in that prison waiting for the next hero to save him.
-
Cool. Plair has been respecced, so he should be a bit more useful.
-
I've learned to recognize the sound of the Ember Demon's heal, and from what I can tell, relying on that is almost as bad an idea as trusting the Merc Medic's heal. Not quite the same, but not much better.
-
Only problem is, I believe a brand new character can only hold the one recipe, and about four pieces of invention salvage. Now, if you have a level 50 that's not been played for a while, you can clear that one out and use that.
-
Do the Mean Girls have SG colors? I know several SGs don't, but if they do, and I can make it to any of the events, I will try to be sporting their colors to celebrate.
EDIT: Oh yeah, and symbol, too. -
Agreed. Besides, the clock is probably still ticking, and I need to get food anyway.

I feel like quoting Mum-Ra, but the boards won't allow it.

OK, Went's being down, I can deal. Globals being down we can work around. But this is one step too far!
