Yeah we'd be pretty screwed without a magnetosphere even if there wasn't any anti-matter out there. Basically the main reason why Mars is not currently a "second Earth" life-wise right now is that most of its atmosphere has been blasted away by solar wind due to its lack of a significant magnetosphere.

I don't think the Earth's magnetosphere has ever completely "turned off" before. But there is plenty of evidence for how the magnetic north/south lines periodically switch poles. This means that like every million years or so a compass would switch between pointing north and pointing south.

Yeah the twist Ape-America ending certainly didn't help. But the whole "research space station using ape pilots" premise seemed weird to me and some of the main casting/acting was just plain weak. Sure a few like Tim Roth and Helena Bonham Carter did alright but Mark Wahlberg and Estella Warren were downright lackluster. The irony with Estella is that she was completely upstaged by Linda Harrison's Nova (from the original PoTA) who basically didn't even say a word in that movie.

I don't really need Hathaway to look exactly like Julie Newmar's or a video game's version of Catwoman or even be called "The Catwoman". Like Shard_Warrior said they handled Two Face very well without having to constantly drill it into us that's who he was. He didn't have to wear a "Hello, my name is Two Face" nametag on his jacket and neither will she.

As I mentioned before we'll probably get plenty of glancing references to her "catiness" without her having to wear the costume ears all the time. I don't really care if she'll be more Selena Kyle than Catwoman or vice-versa. I have complete faith in Nolan that this character will be awesome regardless.

The interesting bit of that scene with Jessica heading for the doors is that as Jason is running towards the house we see a split second where one of Bill's guards tackles him. Then as the camera jumps back to Jessica just about to open the doors there's a gunshot outside. Who shot who? If we assume Jason's going to save Jessica then he might have just killed a guy to do it.

    SPOLIERS ALERT (from the books)...

In the Sookie Stackhouse novels Jason is bitten by the Hotshot Were-panthers and then actually becomes a Were-panther himself. Unlike what's been explained on the TV show a person in the books can either be born a Were or bitten to become a Were. A bitten Were can only change at the full moon whereas a born Were can potentially change whenever they want to. So it was kind of a twist that the TV show decided to claim that people who are bitten can't become Weres.

Of course that's probably some kind of "red herring" and we'll learn that Jason is somehow unique in that regard.

You know strangely enough the only PotA movie to date I REALLY never liked was the 2001 remake. Yes the original series of movies are fairly dated now and of course the special effects are only as good as the late 60s/early 70s could provide. But for some reason the 2001 remake annoys me more than the campy silliness of the old movies.

So if this new movie at least channels any of the "mojo" of the original series that'd be fine with me.

Well despite the bad review you've just given it. (I hate retcons) I'm still going to wait until it's released on DvD and form my own opinion.
The irony here is that even though I enjoyed the original BSG I found that the recent remake of that franchise was one of the few examples where the remake of something actually respectably stands on its own as a good effort. I liked it, and it doesn't really take anything away from the original since it went so far towards enhancing the story we never got to see in one season's worth of shows (FYI: I pretend BSG1980 doesn't exist).

To be clear I never said I disliked the original Planet of the Apes series, even the time travel bits. I was just saying if you focus too much on the time travel parts of just about any sci-fi story it tends to fray at the seams. Clearly they fudged the premise well enough back in the 60s and 70s to stretch it out to 5 movies and a TV show so I'll give the original series the credit it's due. I'm just not going to beat myself up trying to "shoehorn" the latest couple of movies back into the continuity of the originals. I consider the last two movies (the 2001 one and the one out now) to be almost more "re-imaginings" instead of direct "remakes".
  7. I recently got myself a 27" monitor for my computer to replace an older smaller one. It's kind of ironic that I'll need it to fully "appreciate" these new Titan weapons that'll likely stretch all the way across one side of the screen to the other.

While there Zira had a child who was hidden in a traveling circus. That child grew up to be Caesar who led the now domesticated apes in revolt and out of the cities into the abandoned countryside. I thought the nuclear holocaust occurred after that revolt.

Humans turn to "apes" as pets and then as time goes on they begin using them as more slaves and educating them more. They develop the ability to speak and eventually Caesar arises and starts to lead a revolt against humans.

From this point mankind attacked the apes and each other with a few humans taking refuge underground in a closed off protected city. Humans above ground either die out or are enslaved as apes rise and subdue the various pockets of mankind above ground left and over the long run this causes humans to stop gathering in communities as much and they lose language.

This all fits together because Caesar being from a more advanced lineage would be smarter and thus more able to advance such ideas as a revolution would entail.

The point that doesn't fit is that the two apes come to the past and are all over the news and tell what happens. This being the case man wouldn't let those events to take place and as such it makes the idea that it still does happen pretty ludicrous.
That's pretty much why I didn't bother to mention the Cornelius and Zira time travel loop in my last post when talking about the "continuity" of the Planet of the Apes timeline. As we all know when you introduce time travel into a sci-fi storyline things usually get fuzzy and paradox-y.

Bottomline it doesn't really bother me that newer movies like Rise of the Planet of the Apes may not strictly stick to an established timeline because that franchise is already a little loose with the facts to begin with. I'm not even going to try to explain the 1970s PotA TV show in with the rest of this.

I believe I've seen both edits of Brazil, but it has admittedly been many years since I saw either. Regardless even a "bad" edit of Brazil outshines Snyder's attempt at homage in this case.

For what it's worth I really enjoyed the battle fantasy set pieces of Sucker Punch. Clearly the 2011 CGI action was beautiful to watch. I just found that I could have slept through the rest of the supposed "movie" that linked those set pieces together without missing anything of redeeming value. I went into it wanting to care about the girls, but by the end the story was just so trite and melodramatic it was almost annoying. I've seen better acting and dialogue in high school musicals.

I wish Snyder better luck next time. He's seems to be a much better director than writer...

Frankly the more any Planet of the Apes movie disassociates itself from the 2001 remake the better.

Strictly speaking Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (1972) wasn't even really a clear-cut prequel to the original Planet of the Apes (1968). In the original Planet of the Apes the human race had nuked itself out of existance allowing the apes to evolve unopposed. But in Conquest of the Planet of the Apes humans had created a race of apes that were being used as slave labor. The slave apes eventually revolted and supposedly went on to destroy human society in open warfare.

Basically every Planet of the Apes movie seems to tweak the overall story a bit to suit its purposes.

This new movie is a relatively direct remake of the -fourth- original movie Conquest of the Planet of the Apes.
    Go figure.

I'm not against the generic idea of VEATs getting more uniform slots. I just never thought getting these Paragon Market unlockable slots was going to do anything to "solve" that specific problem.

Maybe at some point they'll let VEATs choose whether any given costume slot is a "normal" one or a "uniform" one instead of having the first slot permanently hardwired that way. That would actually let VEATs have up to 10 or even no uniforms as desired.

^This. I'm assuming, until I see otherwise, that they are going to be keeping this upgrade as simple as possible. This means VEATs will keep their one "uniform" slot. Not really sure why additional costume slots for everyone would justify giving VEATs more "uniform" slots anyway.

That was practically a "drinking game" back when you watched the old Lynda Carter Wonder Woman show. You never knew from scene to scene whether she'd be wearing her "fashion" heeled boots or her "stunt" flat-soled ones.

I can understand not wanting to read/see too much about a movie before you see it so that you're not spoiled but if one picture is enough to "ruin" it for you then you may need to stay off the Internet for the next year or so.

At any rate I don't think it'll come to that extreme in this game because the Devs here have a good track record of being reasonable and (mostly) sane.

If the "battle scenes" had been David-Lynch-esq weirdness instead of overblown-rocketfuel-action I think a lot more people would have "got" it.

Did people realise "the dance" was her getting craped (without the c), hence the 2nd level break each time?
I think I can safely say, without a shadow of a doubt, that I "got" what the movie was trying to do and understood the transitions between the dances. I've been watching sci-fi/fantasy movies for decades so this was hardly a new experience for me.

But I can also safely say that despite what this movie was trying to do meta/story wise it basically failed to deliver. The "battle scenes" were not the problem here. In fact taken as separate little vignettes they were easily the best parts of this movie. Where this movie fell apart is that it somehow managed to make me not care or feel sympathetic toward any of the girls. By the end I ultimately didn't really care if any of them survived or escaped. And without that core engagement to the story its outcome was semi-pointless drivel. Far from terrifying this movie was almost annoyingly boring during the non-battle scenes.

If you want to see a movie that actually succeeded in what this one was trying to do go back and watch a movie called Brazil. Zack Snyder has even said in interviews that he was strongly inspired by Brazil while making Sucker Punch. Sadly this inspiration lead to a movie that wasn't even a fraction as good.
  21. They might even end up avoiding the whole "cat ear" thing for the most part. But I bet there'll be a quick scene where she's in a vault trying to steal something and she'll use some high-tech listening device which will, ironically, look like a pair of cat ears just as a nod to the old style character.

They may be trying to distance Hathaway's character from the previous Catwomen we've seen. Probably not exactly a bad idea when you consider the Halle Berry disappointment. As I mentioned before I wouldn't exactly be upset with a more Aeon Flux'd version of Catwoman.

I'm willing to cut this -one- picture some slack as far as all that goes. Like Hazmatter mentioned Christian Bale ran around in the first movie for a good chunk of time before he started wearing his "official" batsuit. I'm sure we'll see her in some version of a catsuit with ears and all that at some point.

Like most games' item shops, CoH Freedom's a la carte market place is designed to make more money overall from players than the prix fixe-style Boosters, not the same (or less). This is just one reason why MTX-supported F2P game models wind up costing regular players more, even the VIP subscribers.

The real problem is when devs get greedy and charge $70 for a monocle or become desperate and start offering play-to-win services.
I think our Devs have demonstrated a long history of not doing overtly "greedy" things. On the other hand I can't really begrudge them the opportunity to adjust many of their "per item" prices up a bit under this new microtransaction system. Once again as a business they certainly have the right to do systematically reasonable things to maximize their profits.
  25. Yeah the current account page isn't really helpful for this kind of thing. Maybe you could skim through all the Booster Pack info on Paragonwiki and try to piece together what you're missing. If you bought most of your packs around the time they were released you might be able to use the perk dates on your account page to estimate which is which.

    Good luck.
