Happy Holidays, everyone!!! -
The fairy had gotten as far as spotting the Marbles and glowering at it when Jade's question got her moving again. "Now. Now we bring back your friend. Please hand the Marbles the items you've been holding."
"Wait!" Rosette Briar immediately cried out. She glared again at the Marbles, "Are you ready?"
It held out its arm that ended in a pouch, the top opened invitingly. The fairy was not impressed by it nor its owner's banal smile. "It is empty? Why do I bother asking. Of course you put something else in there. You wouldn't be Marbles if you weren't planning trickery at every opportunity. All right, keep it open, you sneak!"
After staring a confirmation from the Marbles, Rosette Briar dove in head-first. Her grumbles and grunts echoed up as if she was in a great cavern instead of a small pouch. Stacks of parchments, scrolls, and more items - each more unlikely to have been legitimately property of the Marbles than the last - popped out to land in a messy heap on the ground. Those with the knowledge or experience could identify them as a Psionic Threat Report, a Chaos Theorem, a Destiny, a Magical Conspiracy, and a Diamond. As the latter rolled down the pile, Rosette Briar reappeared with a disgusted look on her face and a ball of green goo in both hands. "What a mess!" she declared as she dropped the glob, sliming the accumulated pile, and shook her hands clean. "Yuck!"
"Yechk. No more tricks! Stop giving me reasons to have control over you!" she admonished the Marbles, whom appeared to be far from contrite.
Shaking her head at the futility, Rosette Briar redirected Jade to place his items into the now-cleared pouch. "The feather, a lock of hair, a shaved sliver off a hoof; yes, yes, as good as Gold," the fairy accounted for each item as it was added.
"Next is the Thorn Tree Vine," Rosette Briar stated, as if it was the most important item yet. She made no effort to hide the pain as she pulled the vines from her own arms. All except a tuff at each shoulder was uprooted. Sap oozed from the wounds, briefly trailing rivets which stained into swirling tattoos on the bared arms.
Rosette Briar dropped her vines into the waiting maw of the pouch. She took a minute to rub the dried flakes of sap off and deem the resulting design pleasantly attractive.
"Finally, the bonding item: The crystal acorn." With a theatrical flair, Rosette Briar flew in a complex pattern and waved her arms to form a summoning portal. Through it dropped a distorted sphere mostly in the shape of an acorn, as transparent and plain as an optical lens.
A glimpse of the treasury beyond lingered in the hungry eyes of the Marbles when the portal closed. Paxtera's vision of the threads of time could confirm it to be the same as the one separated from Trisys during her arrival to Patches. Though it was unmistakably the same, the segment of the thread itself during its time in Rosette Briar's possession remained obscured.
The fairy caught the acorn with both arms and both legs. For a moment it might have appeared that she changed her mind, the way she coddled it. Finally, reluctantly she dropped it into the pouch of the Marbles.
With a sigh, Rosette Briar faced Jade, "If you have someone who can coax dead spirits near, now is the time to try."
Then with one last look of longing, the fairy directed the Marbles, "Alright, you crafty creature. Start the summoning."
Gradually a light began pouring out of the top of the pouch as if a swarm of blue fireflies were dancing within. Sparks began to spit out, the spell coming to a climax... -
Jade and those who accompanied him didn't have long to wait when they reached the Heart Tree. In her normal flair for the dramatic, Paxtera's golden portal winked her and Rosette Briar nearby ten seconds later.
The latter immediately launched into another woe-is-me tirade. Those who listened to the fairy rant herself out learned of the two's longer journey.
Paxtera's had proven most skilled. With a few details of range and guestimates of pixie-sized speeds she had quickly teleported them to the proper Where where Rosette Briar had appeared in Patches. Then she had jumped them backwards, again skillfully navigating time with little more than vague 'about half again' and 'really close' references.
The third time jump had found them right at the point when the waste had been snatched to Patches, complete with a mammoth storm. The fairy had gone into a frenzy as the wall of sand bore down on them, pulling at Paxtera's hair and shrieking demands that she immediately teleport them ahead in time. Paxtera, for her part much less impressed, had jumped them forward a nudge. Just enough to be in a lull.
Unmollified the fairy had directed Paxtera to place the skull down. With as much haste as could be expedited from Paxtera, it was settled to the exactly required position and left to its fate.
A fate exactly as the Self-Fulfilling Prophecy had demanded. For it required a specific kind of Chronal Skip forward in time, but only after it had gone back. Truly it was as temperamental as the planet Patches. There it once more began its long wait, a skull that would be buried and unburied by sand, joined by other humanoid skulls, until the day when a running metal dragon would crush it, lodging the stone acorn in its boot to be carried and form the bond with the lost wish maker.
When next Paxtera examined the threads of fate, she would discover that the acorn's threads now neatly looped back on itself. It had been adrift because it required her willing participation to complete the Prophecy's cycle. Now that she had, it was whole to her vision.
For her part, Rosette Briar finally succumbed to the soothing presence of the Heart Tree enough to wind down. She took a few deep breaths to calm her rattled nerves. Oh how she hated these 'little favors' for the Universe. They were never easy or straightforward or safe.
The fairy looked around properly, trying to see all who were present for the second half of the spell.
Technically, she thought to herself, I have ensured the Prophecy fulfilled. That was the reason I had been pulled to this accursed place. Thus I am free to leave. Except I made that promise to help Jade's friend. If I bail on that I just know the Universe - or the karma effect of Jade's friend, whichever got to her first - would make things harder next time. Really, really, really need to arrange it so there is no 'next time'.
((Made an assumption or two to move things forward. Please PM me if it requires editing. Thank you!)) -
Thank you for sharing, MadGremlin! Enjoyed reading all the segments tonight. (If that makes me crazy, I'll gladly accept the title. ;-> )
When Psilent Threat shows up in another story, would you please post a link in this thread? Especially if it is one other than the Whitmoore or PCU, as I would enjoy reading the further (mis)adventures of the psychic vampire. Update: Continuation of story in the Whitmoore thread.
Oh, and if the position to be her meta-parole/contract/officer is open, please drop me a PM. I, too, have someone I'd like to tie in at the Whitmoore who I think would work well for the job.

"Hmm," the fairy mused. "Not quite. Try lowering it towards the nose. You'll know it is right where it... ah-ha!"
When the acorn was slid down to between and just above the eyes, it merged into the skull as if Jade had found a fissure though the dome had been flawlessly smooth before. Now just a nub bumped out like a tiny horn while the rest of the Prophecy nestled within giving the impression it had always been of one piece with the skull.
"Yes, exactly!" She chirped with a pleased nod.
Turning to Paxtera, Rosette Briar gave a little bow. Her tone was polite, though she couldn't quite mask a tinge of sarcasm at her own over-formality. "If you'll be so kind, please pick up the skull and let's be off. The Prophecy and Positronic Matrix are ready to be placed in the past." -
Jade shaking his head tossed Rosette Briar into the air. With a little, "Eek!" she tumbled end over end a couple of times before righting herself mid-air. She gave Jade an ungrateful look, which she turned on Paxtera upon the question of her breathing requirements.
Once Paxtera started arranged for her daughters to stay put, the fairy flew back to Jade to get the final detail in place. "Hurry, hurry!" she urged, tugging on his hand. Not that she had the strength to more it so much as a millimeter, but she tried to at least convey a sense of urgency. "Place the Prophecy, that stone acorn, on the skull. Hold it again the forehead a moment." Seeing Paxtera ready to go, she redoubled her efforts to get the two items prepared for transport before the time traveler changed her mind about being helpful. -
Well, it's the middle of the event as so far the lag is harder than the waves of AVs.
Not that I want more AVs/bosses/etc, I think that part is fine.
I would recommend that certain enemy powers be suppressed during these raids. In particular I am finding that once blinded, I am stuck without being able to hit anything for 10+ minutes due to lag. No, I'm not exaggerating. I wish I was.
It's pretty bad when there is lag. It's worse when blinded and there is nothing to do (because a Break Free doesn't undo the status effect) but watch others play and/or lag to the login screen. -
"You might want to keep a lid on that cynicism, or you'll accidentally tear a hole in reality with the sheer force of it," came the reprimand to her little tirade.
The fey's shoulders slumped. "Thistle berries," she bemoaned. She didn't believe that Paxtera thought her powerful enough for such thoughtless destruction, but she did misunderstand the observation as a rejection. She really, really, really had wanted the time traveler already here rather than the other option.
Then Paxtera continued, "Anyway, alright. We'll help, but we're going to need more details." She smiled a rather amused smile. "'Take two items and put them in the past' is rather open-ended. Specifics as to which two items, where and when to put them... You know, stuff like that would be useful."
Oh-ho, that brightened the little fairy considerably. "Now you're talking!"
The seed didn't appear to be needed at the moment, so she tucked it out of sight among the vines covering her arms. Then she zoomed to Jade's nose to again curl around the short horn, wings lazily opening and closing. "This guy here - Jade was it? right, Jade - had a friend who got them both snared by a Self-Fulfilling Prophecy because it was masquerading in a shape similar to a Token she lost. It's a harmless looking thing, like a stone acorn. Jade can tell you all about the fun," she rolled her eyes sarcastically, "they had because of it after we are done placing it in the past for the spell.
"The second item is that skull," she pointed towards Cerelassion's worktable. "It is the remains of his friend at her death, and contains the Positronic Matrix from a metaloid form. For some reason the Prophecy has connected to it and requires it in the past with it. Why? Don't know, don't care. Actually, it works out for the best. There are other pieces Jade has from her natural form that will be used later in the spell to revive her. By putting the Matrix remnant with the Prophecy, it removes the chance of getting mixed up with and/or at odds against with the revival phase, what with her being a magical creature and all. Really, Jade, I don't know what your friend was thinking as she tried to mix magic and technology.
"For where, that would be the location I was pulled into Patches at. It is a bit that-a-way," she waved a hand in the general direction of Paragon, "but reasonably reachable by air.
"And when. Hmm, that I don't know until when we arrive. Have you ever heard of 'Warm Hot Cold'? That's the best I can describe the sensation of when to go. The longer I'm here the farther, or colder, away the when feels. So the Prophecy has to go into the past, not the future. Makes sense, it being a Self-Fulfilling Prophecy and all would require it to be put back to when it could be discovered by Jade and his friend.
"Beyond that, I will know when because I feel I'm getting 'warmer' to the destination. Best guess would be whenever the desert was pulled to Patches. Do you know when that was, Jade? Oh, wait, that's right. You were pulled here with Paragon, not the desert; the same as your friend. Anyway, if you," she addressed Paxtera again, "don't know when that was, a handful of jumps should be enough to locate it.
"While we are gone Jade, the Marbles, and whomever else Jade wants involved can go to where his friend died. That's where the second half of the spell will need to take place for the actual revival.
"Any other questions before we go?" For such a tiny body she sure had impressive lung capacity, getting it all out in three-and-a-bit breaths. -
Throwing a temper tantrum would hardly help her position. Logic said that. Logic versus emotion in a temper shorter than the palm-sized body. Logic lost.
"It is not candy. It is a seed from plant of the universal salve variety. At least I have yet to encounter a situation where it does not benefit a willing recipient.
"Frankly I don't care who you are, nor do I care for you to know me. All I want is to be left alone."
She huffed a moment. Her mutterings were of counting to ten thrice. Calmed down, at least marginally, she grumbled reminders to herself that she wanted assistance rather than antagonism. She backtracked to try speaking again to Paxtera. Her voice was slightly strangled, the tone that was Patches' translation of her chirps still strained.
"Based on your question you have a name. Unlike you, I don't have one. If you must have something to gain my attention, I have been called Rosette Briar." She held up the proffered pink fluff above her vine-and-thorn covered arm to signify where the name arose. "Anyone can call me whatever they wish. If it is done with respect and if I have an inclination to respond, I will. Why does everyone dwell on me having a name, anyway? I really don't understand it. Why would I need one if I am only by myself?
"Ironically," she glared a moment at a non-person point above her, "the best security for seclusion requires unscheduled interruptions of said solitude for, what shall we call it?, case work. The geis of a mortgage payment, if you will. One that traps me until the requirements of the individual case are fulfilled. Then I get my coveted solitude until the next case.
"That's why I'm here. Jade has lost his friend. I have the knowledge of the spell to bring her back as she was meant to be. Thus, the geis picked me, oh! lucky me!, to be the one to do it. All the pieces are assembled to finish off this case. Well, all the pieces but one.
"That's where you come in. I need a time traveler to complete the first half of the spell by placing two items back in time so they fulfill a time loop. That's it. No meddling with the time stream. No 'change the universe so I am emperor of everything' scheme. Not even rewrite history so I can be alone, as tempting as that sounds.
"You can hold the items to transport. In fact, I'd prefer that. The only reason I have to go along at all is to ensure they are placed correctly.
"So you see, I don't want to waste my effort in childish games with you. No offense, I'm sure you are worth tricking, but not by me. Ask the Marbles when we're done; they'd be thrilled for the job.
"All I want is to get this spell over with so I can get out of here. This seed is simply meant to help you recover faster so you can help me help Jade, which will allow me get out of this... this mess!"
Heh. Of course, spelling out the truth probably won't resolve things so simply. In her experience time travelers tended to gain too much history and too many secrets to take things at face value, even from such a simple creature as herself.
She should have known her luck was over strained when the magical artisan Cerelassion, the one she had expected the most questions and delays from, had been overly helpful just short serving with a silver platter. Of course it wasn't going to be that easy. Gaaaaah!
Bad enough she had to work with Marbles, now she was being treated like one too. Why couldn't people be bothered to know the differences between a helpful fairy and a trickster fae? The suffering she had to endure because of prejudice really wasn't fair. -
The fey's reaction was as emphatic as Paxtera's daughter, if a bit more selfish. The time-traveler seemed to be more or less intact and likely to be available presently. She placed a hand on her chest and sighed in relief as she addressed Paxtera, "Very, very glad you made it!"
So far she had not had to call in the alternative. Even better she had not had to reveal her ace. Every time the little fairy had had to do that she had ended up in a bottle or lamp or some other small cramped container for, well, much longer than she wanted to remember.
Still, a little offering should not arouse too much attention while still speeding things up. "Do you need any help? Perhaps something to recover your energy?" She clasped her hands together then unfolded them to offer what looked like a tiny fluff of cotton candy, pink as the membranes of her fluttering wings. -
Quote:((link to earlier in thread))Quote:Something that I think should be in the guide is that it's possible to change sides before hitting level 20.
I know that I personally saw it repeated over and over that you have to be level 20 to chance sides, but it turns out that's not the case. You have to be over 20 to get the missions, but even before then, it turns out you can change sides - you just have to be grouped with people who can get and do the missions. (Also, since you don't have the tip UI, you can't tell how far you are along.)

"If it's not one thing, it's another," the fay complained bitterly.
She tried to get closer to see what she could do. After all, the universe never gave her a situation that was more than she or one of the temporary companions could handle. But dispite her tiny size Kethara and Jade crowded too close for her to get a good look.
"A little help, please? Give her room to breath!" -
Jade and company returned to find the little fey in the middle of another tirade. "... and I know it's my fault it happened in the first place, but enough is enough! Being diminished over time after I commit to a plan of action to keep me on track does no good when the ones I'm sent to help who wander off and causes the delay, not I!
"And if it wasn't you, Marbles, then it was the K'hdriddyl, the Avions, the Crazed, or some other jokers who wanted dibs on my treasures. I'm of a mind to charge you grievance fees for the trouble security measures with the Universe have cost, if I could figure out how. What is so wrong about just wanting to keep my garden and myself to myself, anyway?"
Spotting Jade, she broke off, her mouth hanging open a few seconds. "You... you actually came back. Well, well! There is a first for everything. To think, I almost made a deal with the Marbles in order to get out of here." She made a show of hovering in the air to dust herself off while Cerelassion announced the next location. It might be a trick of the light, but the fairy, like her temper, appeared even shorter than before. She was closer to three-and-a-half inches tall instead of the previous four.
The spirit wolf rose up and brushes the Fairy with his tail. "Come on Little One; it's time to get to work."
"Eeeeep!" her screech marked her path in an arc ending on Jade's shoulder. She grabbed on to the perch, shaking in equal parts rage and terror.
"Fairies like flying through the air. Though we far preferred our own choice of route and destination," she chided. Anyone else would have gotten an hour's earful, but she personally had a respect boarding paranoia of undomesticated canine from an incident ages ago. The first messed-up mission for the Universe she had just been lamenting, as a matter of fact. Though it had been a very different breed of wolf involved, the fear remained.
Her trembling had faded by the time they entered Cerelassion's lab. Still, she looked like she had a nervous twitch as she fluttered from Jade's shoulder to the remains on the table. Hmming and Uh-huhing, the fey lifted up several of the scale fragments a third as big as her to reflect the in the growing daylight and scrambled all over the humanoid skull.
"Well, some more good news and bad news," she proclaimed, lounging daintily atop the bleached dome. "Good news first. This," she patted the skull beneath her, "holds the Positronic Matrix needed for the spell. Bad news: I hope your not attached to it, because the Prophecy is and it will need to go back in time too.
"More good news," she hurried on, hoping to distract Jade from any objections he may have, "is that these scales are just flakes of metal. I expect they are the remains of your form she took on. Things like forms and contracts made in life lose their power and authority upon death. She won't have to return as a robot. The scales are utterly harmless and, as far as I'm concerned, utterly useless."
She reconsidered. "Well, if you have a morbid obsession, I suppose you could keep them to use as an ingredient to return to your robotic state someday. I can't imagine why you would want to, as you didn't sound happy to be that way when you told your story. Otherwise throw the scales out. Or melt them into something useful like a flowerpot. We won't need them for the spell, and they'd only be in the way."
Checking things off on her vine-covered fingers, she nodded. "That nearly does it. First stage first. Is your time-traveling acquaintance available?" She didn't want to remind that she had an alternative. It really was one she didn't want to use unless absolutely necessary. -
My experience thus far is that all missions, Tips and non-Tips, are lost when a morality switch is made. As long as you can still talk to the contacts, you can re-claim missions lost.
-
One arm waved Jade away from her safe retreat. "Go on, go on. Just get back soon!" the fey emphasized, saying whatever else was needed to see him off. The sooner he was gone, the sooner he would hopefully return, and the sooner they could get the prophecy spell completed.

Thank you for soliciting the forum population's opinion! Kudos for being active, too! My 2 inf after reading 501 posts in this thread...
Option 2. Only add.
Thank you, Noble Savage, for confirming that nothing will be removed from the system.
Here were my notes as I read up to that point...
Based on bAss_ackwards's examples of the old vs. new head wings detail, I firmly vote option 2 to keep everything. The new wing looks impressive, yes, but the old wing is exactly as I want it for a costume I actively use and enjoy BECAUSE it is low-rez. It flowed much better with the costume than the new, hi-rez head wing option.
Based on RedSwitchblade's example of the shoulder rings I plead for option 2 to keep everything. I use them to depict energy arcs on some tech/magic-themed characters. Certainly I wouldn't object to more options with more motion in the same form as electrical arcs, but on some of my characters they would still want to have the existing rings option just the way they are, thank you very much.
Based on gigas'S example of the psyche detail, I emphatically vote option 2 to keep everything. The psyche pattern is exactly as I want it for my main character I actively use and enjoy BECAUSE it is the way it is. Yes most people use horrendous, eye-gouging colors. But I choose blue/green for a water look that is my favorite among all the characters I have created. Incidentally, it has also won me quite a few costume contests. A sharper texture would ruin the effect.
Based on repeated emphasis that the new pieces are preferred over the old, I respectfully disagree. My last three characters created all use legacy pieces in preference over (or as a majority in combination with) the shiny new options from GR and booster packs. I was in a mood for a softer, euphoria look. The new pieces are too sharp and too specific for what I was aiming for. Will I use the new pieces? Sure, when the mood strikes. Until then, I'm still enjoying mostly classic options.
Sorry, the votes and logic for Option 1 did not personally make me believe the game would be better for having the old legacy options gone.
Will option 2 make a lot of clutter? Yes, but clutter will only be adding to an existing problem not creating a new one. If clutter is the only thing keeping all the legacy costume options from being available, then adding another tier to the submenu is the solution.
*** The versatility in the costume creator is one of this game's big strengths. More options inspire more creativity. And more creativity encourages longer interaction. Bottom line: More costume options can encourage more game subscribers to play longer.
Of all the reasons people leave CoH, having too many options in the costume creator is one so rare I have yet to hear it.
Joe might think that legacy and modern costume pieces are the same except for graphics upgrade, but Jane will want both because she sees two separate options and plans a costume for each.
*** Avoiding menu work may be preferable to you, Noble Savage, as it will take up resources available for redos. But please, please, consider that it may be equally preferable to the general player base that the UI is upgraded rather than (or at least along side) the costume pieces. What good are new shiny pieces if they (1) replace old favorites which are begged to be left alone and (2) cannot be found at the tailor because of an outdated UI?

Thank you once more, Noble Savage, for being the most interactive Devs on the boards currently. It's one of the reasons these forums are the best in the industry! -
