I'm happy to set up a coalition with SINISTER if you're online tonight. That way you'll have access to the SINISTER teleporters.
The advantage of global channels is that you can contact players on other servers/sides and they'll have the chance to switch over for some teaming. -
Just start a new thread, we can rearrange the stickies, you've got the edit button and we're off!
And a big thank you! -
Quote:That seems like a good idea. I assume a "real" VG is one that you have all of your characters in, and have enough storage for your needs. That's incompatible with being a "welcome to the masses" VG because of the character and storage limits.I think the purpose of sinister should be as a transient VG for people who don't have their own VGs. The intention being to make TPers available to denizens of the australia channel, and provide some admittedly insecure storage.
It should be made clear on joining that this is really what sinister is for, people can move out if/when they find a real VG, but it would be very useful to people new to the server.
So it would be appropriate to position SINISTER as a starter/casual/transient VG, since that's what it has become. But that only makes sense if there are "real" VGs out there for people to join, and a proper network of coalitions so there's some communication.
So, to support this scheme, we need people who are running real VGs to step forward, keep a character in SINISTER, which I will promote so you can invite, and then join their VG to coalition. Volunteers?
Quote:Several times I've been on when people wanted invites, but as a mere minion I can't invite. -
Quote:I'm sure you're right. The problem is that there is no other VG that advertises itself as open to new players. The list of groups in this forum is notably sparse. To be honest, most of the newer members are avoiding SINISTER, due to the inactivity of the VG.
And the newer ones, which have gone into the VG, have ended up quitting lately.
Quote:The private VG's can always make a network of VG's via coalitions
Quote:With the fact that the channel has expanded so much in the last few weeks, I think that if we DID get everyone into SINISTER, we would reach the toon limit really fast, and the storage limit would easily become a problem. -
Min Min won't be udpating this any more, so we need a volunteer to take it over. Anyone?
-
Very good point. The disconnection between global and local is also a hurdle, even for more experienced players.
Quote:And I've actually tried a few times to get into sinister and sentinel, but no one was on. My hours are worse than yours, darn 90-hour work week =)
Coalition is handy, but unfortunately the limit of 10 is a bit constraining and not everyone can have a spot. -
Last weeks ship raid went nice and smoothly. Despite the fact that there had been one earlier in the day, so the mothership was covered in Rikti Priests.
This week it sounds like time to get back into the Strike Forces, figuring out exactly what when we land. Something has come up which might prevent me from being there tonight, so please start without me if I'm not around. I'll send some offline messages in-game too so people are aware. -
Hi everyone, you may have noticed that SINISTER is in a bit of a slump right now, I am now the only active leader, and I'm only online twice a week.
The purpose of SINISTER has always been to serve the community by connecting players and to be a welcoming place for people new to the game or server. I do not own SINISTER and I didn't create it, I am just its caretaker, and some day I expect to pass it on to a new upcoming leader.
The problem is that there is no emerging leadership in SINISTER, because the mechanics of supergroups has made them mostly irrelevant at best, and a burden at worst. Communication happens in global channels, and many of the community's more experienced players have created their own private supergroups and do not participate in a shared group. The character limit is the biggest issue, because there just isn't room for all a player's characters. Less important now is the issue of private storage, since email attachments make sharing easier. Finally, most people want to tinker with base design at some point or another.
So, do you think that a supergroup to serve the Oceanic community is still an important asset? Or is global channel Australia enough?
If you think a shared supergroup is important, would you join SINISTER with one or two of your favoured characters? If you think a leadership role in SINISTER would suit you, let me know as well.
See you tonight,
Lili -
Just like the good old days, we made it to the end of Silver Mantis, and were close to spawning Duray when maintenance struck. Well, I had a great time anyway, and we'll have a crack at finishing it off tomorrow night. Team B finished with lots of time to spare.
Next week will be a ship raid, see you there. -
Last Week the Cirque du Sinistre had some fun in the AE.
This week we'll return to the good old standby of doing some Strike Forces. I think Silver Mantis might be in order, we can try it out starting from the contact in Sharkhead Isle. -
Cool stuff Plantatia. I'd suggest being careful with the ITF, make sure you have a plan for the final battle because it seems people are having trouble with the 'pull Romulus to the rooftop' technique since I17. Sleeping the nictii or taunting them away from Rommy are both good alternatives.
-
Too bad on the master run.
I suggest recruiting a Brute with Taunt, and make sure they haven't slotted it with a damage proc. -
It will be a long downtime starting on the evening of the 28th.
Cirque du Sinistre is open to everyone. I found combining it with the AE worked nicely. -
Methinks somebody is afraid of the Cirque du Sinistre! Afraid that their show can't compare to ours. Afraid of losing their audience to the spectacle of a lifetime. They know that the Cirque du Sinistre is the last circus you'll ever want to see.
I was thinking of going to the AE in RWZ, because AE arcs are so much fun for the Cirque. Looks like we'll have to do it the week after along with the brand new demon side-show. -
Next week is the Cirque du Sinistre performance, so get your circus characters ready for a laugh a minute spectacle of carnage.

Thanks for the report Snoofles. There were actually two ITFs run, but I've no idea how the other one fared.
The first ship raid went extremely well, and the second was a humbling experience. The Rikti seemed to be prepared the second time around and the place is crawling with Rikti Magus. When you've got a Rikti Magus for each player, the Mothership is not a nice place.
Our Iron Man Ice Mistral was great, with four Dominators two Brutes and a lonely Corruptor. Most of the time we were down one or two players due to rogue cable repairmen and software crashes. We also reverted to the traditional tactics for the final fight, which involves a visit to the hospital after Archus calls his backup. -
I have updated the original post to reflect people's reaction, and to change the plan to create a new channel for quietly sharing events.
-
Quote:I certainly didn't mean to alienate anyone. My intention was to have a place for people to chat, and a place for people to avoid it. I feel badly that I caused offense to people in how assigned those.Effectively, you are splitting an already small community, and alienating certain members.
Quote:Australia channel, may not have had a purpose when it was created, but it has gained a purpose.
Quote:We have already had members quit because of this change. The idea of 2 channels, has INCREASED negativity in the channel, and it has already been showing.
Quote:I personally feel, that having a set of rules/guidelines, would be better suited. That way when mods do act, they can direct the person to the rules/guidelines.
Personal attacks are obviously out. What about sexual innuendo? How coarse can it get? Is swearing in or out because of the profanity filter? What about drugs talk? What about "gay" as an insult? Defining, sharing and enforcing these rules just seems like a whole lot of work, but I welcome if someone else wants to have a crack at it.
Quote:To combat that issue, I believe the channel DOES need to be set to silence on join.
Quote:In regards to offensive topics coming up in chat, personally I have felt offended by another mod on SEVERAL occasions, -
Quote:I didn't want to start a fight about the purpose of the channel.and if he is thinking about the players why not ask them before making such a change?
I failed, so I have updated the MOTD to indicate we are discussing, and updated the first post in this thread. I'm hoping for a better solution. -
Thanks for sharing a bit more thoroughly pup.
Quote:I mentioned the option for creating the new channel for events a few posts back, and after the reaction last night, I think that would probably be best. Then make the new channel for SF/TF? ever think about that? Instead of turning one upside down? And im pretty sure no one has a problem annouceing SF/TF cause i can always see them just cause people do not respond to them doesnt mean they do not know they are there. And if they are ignoring the channel how will it be any diffrent if you kill the chat?
The truth is that I've had people say they're quitting the channel because it's too much pointless chat, and people now saying they're quitting because the chat is what's important to them. Some people feel the chat is important, some feel only organizy stuff is important, and I think most fall somewhere in between. I don't know how to keep everyone happy without having two channels. -
Quote:Game stuff is fine in either channel. Depends what level of other chat you want to participate in. I'll be in both channels, and I"m sure others will too.So if I don't have many characters on the Unofficial Oceanic Servers (and thus probably won't benefit much from team planning and event organization), but I still want to talk about game stuff (eg build advice), which channel should I join?
(Never mind that going by names alone, I don't actually qualify to join the Australian global channel, but do qualify for "Oceanic".) -
I'll explain the problem then. If someone has a better solution, I'm all ears.
I, and other moderators, regularly receive complaints about the level and nature of chat in the channel. Particularly when things become too sexually explicit, or people are flinging insults.
Additionally, when there is lots of chatting going on, it becomes difficult to organize things because people are ignoring the channel, or just lose the announcements amongst the chat. These days I often have to resort to private tells because people are not reading the channel.
I too enjoy some pointless chat on occasion, and I don't want to silence anyone, so there needs to be a place for this chat.
Finally, if the rules are too vague, as they are now, it is very difficult for moderators to decide when to step in. It also creates animosity on the part of those who get moderated if they feel that things are being done arbitrarily.
For all these reasons I think we need two channels, one for organizing stuff, and one anything goes where moderation can exist at the /gignore and /petition level.
I wanted the new one to be chat, because I felt those who are chatting are the most motivated to subscribe to a new channel. -
Edit: Reversed the role of the new channel and existing channel. The initial responses in this thread are in response to my move to make Australia the quiet channel.
I have created a new global chat channel intended to be a low traffic events organizing channel. There have been sufficient complaints/requests, and enough traffic to warrant this additional channel. The two channels have an overlap of purpose for organization. People are encouraged to announce events on both, and typically will need to to get numbers. Here are the general guidelines for the two channels:
Australia- Team and event organization
- Game related discussion
- Non-game topics
- Stupid jokes
- Friendly rivalries
- No breach of the game's User Agreement, so no harrassment, abuse or hate, etc.
Oceanic Events- Team and event organization
- Game related discussion
- Polite and friendly
- No insults, not even in fun
- No sexual innuendo or other adult stuff
-
Minotaur, not sure if you were reading the forum when the change was first announced, but if not, you might want to look for a thread here called "Ridiculous Extra Maintenance" or similar.
