Good question, depends on how many posts you can view per page based on your settings, but under 12 sounds safe (unfortunately). It may bring back a lot of the old posters back here to the art threads if they knew the perceived negative criticism was being contained to one thread.

@Jk The above agreeing with you aside, while you could make a true statement that someone needs to have a degree before you will take any critique they give seriously, suggesting that they need "a formal education in some manner of "real" art criticism" to give critique in a non-professional capacity on a videogame forum somewhere is absurd.

Seriously CR, what is your obsession with me? First of all, I never said anything about me being an editor, about BW having to start over, etc. This was all Durraken's commentary. I said Durakken commenting from the perspective of an editor is not what a critique should be about - ie., I am saying that portion is baseless, moot...too. He (Durakken) if he wants his criticism to be constructive, should base it on providing points for improvements, not to throw out random hypothetical situations about if he/she were an editor blah blah blah.

Keep in mind, I completely agree with this is a video game forum and the reality of requiring someone to have a true art degree to give a true art critique is pretty flimsy. However, the obvious fact (this thread as a case in point) there are a few people here that take this EXTREMELY serious, some level of training in anatomy, color theory, perspective, historical knowledge of the genre, as well as simple personal interest should be considered over the average-joe opinion. That's not to be demeaning, but there are schools and other forms of education for this subject for a reason.

So, for example, just because someone feels a finger is too long or too short and should be changed. Sure, this is a simple observation and quite possibly that is all that needs to be said. However, have you considered style?...have you considered composition?...have you considered alternative reasons for a specific part of anatomy to be sized differently than another - there could be a social commentary being made here or simply it's just a caricature and that part of the anatomy was intended to be non-photo realistically proportioned. I am just saying, there are levels to a criticism that (if you are formally educated) would be considered before throwing out obvious comparisons to simple photo-realistic proportion.

So, if you have people PM'ing you about proper proportions CR - cool, good for you at gaining some level of recognition on the boards! If your experiences have been different than mine in terms of the negative feedback about overly critical responses - again, kudos to you.

Regardless, I am just glad that finally after the course of over a year of some seriously heated discussions about art criticism in various threads which have resulted in diminished interests by some of the old-timers that this thread has been made to hopefully direct those energies. I would rather see one thread that borderlines trolling on this section than every other art thread being hit by baseless criticisms.

On a side note, I can position my hand that way too BW. If I had anything to add to your existing criticisms, I would say the left hand - the thumb's proximal phalanx seems to be inconsistently proportioned with the rest of the hand. Compared to the fatty pad of the thumb and the distal phalanx, the length of the proximal phalanx seems too short. Possibly if the knuckle was more defined there it may correct that issue.
  3. Durakken -

Well, I won't comment on whether or not I think you have a solid background for your critiques, but I will say that your explanation was an interesting read.

As for some of the previous comments, I agree with BW - keeping the dialogue about the work seems to be what is the most relevant, speculating whether or not someone will hire you based on the image being critiqued is more-or-less irrelevant especially if that piece is a WIP like BW's is.

  5. I love this thread idea. I have been one of those people that have really thought it was completely inappropriate to be overly critical of the majority of peoples work here since it was a fan art, for fun kind of environment. This last year or so saw some really critical stuff that I know some liked, but a lot were turned off by it. Having a thread dedicated to being critical in theory seems like a good spot to contain potential damage to sensitivity some artists/collectors may have.

With that said, one of the biggest ironies I felt with some people being critical with comments is what exactly is the background of the person being critical? Just because you may draw now or took an art class in high school, doesn't really merit (or in my opinion weight) to someone who seems to enjoy nitpicking. Because really, without a formal education in some manner of "real" art criticism, the vocabulary and constructive nature of a criticism comes off as just that - a nitpick.

So Durraken, what is your artistic background? I have two degrees in art myself and run a design shop as well as freelance illustrate. I don't think I have ever come right out and stated my background in art so much as I did just now, but since this is the critical thread, I feel it's only fair to establish the credibility of my critiques.

Thanks guys. I'll still be around to vote and probably comment even more here since comments only take a few minutes where my FArt submissions ended up taking me hours. Between wanting to shift that time to commission requests and my design company which is going through a growth phase at the moment, I just can't keep spending as much time as I have been to this in good conscience as well as fairness to my clients.
  7. Hey all. Just wanted to say thanks in regards to hosting this event every month Wassy, thanks to all the artist and to the players who followed and voted! It was fun to make it this far, but in light of recent RL events my available time to contribute to this just got whammied! So I unfortunately/fortunately (depends on the perspective lol) need to withdraw from this event and focus on some new exciting RL design/art opportunities that got "the go ahead" today!

Good luck on the following months guys - keep up the good work!

Except, the real "irony" is it's pretty safe to say Caemgen doesn't really care what Bayani thinks about what is and isn't proper art advice, collecting, etc.

And the gang-up routine some of you guys do in order to gain some measure of credibility, while comedic, is ultimately pathetic.

As for your work NT, charge whatever you feel your work is worth. Yes there are some understood market values and what you originally may have posted obviously was perceived as too high here, but there are quite a few artists out there who price work at outrageous prices (Thomas Kincaid comes to mind) and people eat his stuff up and pretty much pay whatever he asks. In terms of an artist that is more familiar to the comic genre, Tim Bradstreet traces straight from his own photo references and he gets cover work all the time - so don't let people bashing your process of using something like Livetrace from Illustrator deter you either. You are making artistic choices in composition and color selections that make these pieces yours. Good luck on developing your craft!

I tend to agree with Caemgen and Powerstream on this too. Theft and abuse do go hand in hand. What just because it's "art" it's not a big deal? They're both crimes and both carry a potential for serious jail time.

In regards to Bayani may know the guy and it may be a minor laugh-off of how could someone do this again sorta thing. I could see that, but keep in mind (and this is where I think it is unfair to label Caemgen having an "unreasonably" low opinion of anyone here). If roles were reverse, it's pretty safe to say based on previous threads and posts, Bayani would be livid mad if anything of his got taken or if someone joked about it. Case in point, someone coming even remotely close to drawing his character that he didn't want...even if intent was there or not and/or with the best intentions to poke a little joke because you thought you "knew" them, the reaction clearly was not a funny one or a "heh". Just sayin.
  11. Just curious, are we to assume the "hot chick rule" is back for this month?
  12. Wow! close month. Gratz CR and to everyone else still in this!

Also, thanks to all the art lovers still following this and being active with voting every month.

Good luck on your new endeavors U-Naught!

See you all again next month.

Don't kill the messenger lol, VexXxa's family stuff this week has struck again. So another change of plans...tonight's MantiCLONEd TF will be rescheduled for the same time tomorrow (Thursday).

Hope to see ya all tomorrow!
  15. Well, this was a pretty interesting month. I don't know about anyone else, but this one took its toll on me.

I haven't seen the "vote" thread pop up yet, which made me wonder...just how many of this month's submissions really qualified for this round's theme? I was trying to keep track on all the discussion about "what if" stories actually being a retcon, etc. I was also trying to keep my subject a low-key one and about cracked when I read about - has someone jumped on doing a retcon on LR? I was like, d'oh!

I for one was hoping to see more of the guys that had a chance to come back really do something amazing and get back into this. However, I can relate to this time of year somehow sucking the life force out of you. So dang hot here...

Anyways, some cool/fun interpretations of characters - I hope w/e you have chosen to occupy your time with more U-Naught that you somehow make time to draw every now and then!
  16. Hey all...here is my submission for this month's contest.

    "Liberator Recluse"

  17. Hey again lol

Here is the finished version along with the full description:

Full-size version can be seen on dA here:

    “Liberator Recluse”

    …and the Web of Resistance

This is my take on a Praetorian version of Lord Recluse.

    Scene 1 – Discovery:
The story begins similar to our own dimension’s version of LR. The young Stefan Ricter sets out along with his friend Marcus Cole to find the Well of the Furies. Once discovered, the two men enter the temple to drink from the fountain of Zeus. This is where this story of these two men takes a dramatic twist from our own. Here, Marcus drinks from the fountain first and instantaneously a volley of lightning strikes blow through the roof of the temple striking Marcus!

    Scene 2 – A Friend is Lost:
The successive strikes blast Stefan a considerable distant from the temple. Stefan is knocked unconscious and is retrieved by his expedition party. Stefan returns home believing Marcus dead and the fountain destroyed.

Scene 3 – Blast from the Past:
Stefan, after 10 years, has fully recovered from his injuries. He still wears his stylized arachnid mobility harness as a symbol of his genius and strength to his recently “acquired” Arachnos organization. In addition to Stefan’s new role as leader of Arachnos, he has taken on the alias of Recluse. It is as this time Recluse learns that Marcus was not killed those 10 years ago and in fact he did more then survive, he acquired superhuman abilities and is now being called a “hero!” Blind with rage; Recluse vows to return to the temple and unlock the mysteries that previously eluded him.

Scene 4 – Outside the Box:
Recluse rediscovers the now destroyed temple. His emotions run wild with the idea of Cole not dead and why Cole betrayed him by not coming to him directly after gaining his new abilities. It was Recluse after all who helped Cole – how dare Cole not share what was rightfully belonging to him as well! The fountain is dry and nothing is left but ruins. Recluse begins to take samples in hopes of unlocking something in the biology of the surrounding wildlife. While preparing to leave, he discovers a metal box half buried a short distance away from the temple. Recluse immediately realizes this box must be the fabled Pandora’s box!

    Scene 5 – Metamorphous:
Years past and Recluse has slowly been secretly growing his organization while Cole has essentially taken over the world! Emperor Cole, as he is now called, did save the world but it has cost humanity a terrible price. Recluse has unlocked some of the secrets of the Well of the Furies over the years and has been able to maintain his youth with a serum created from the samples he took. His hatred of Cole has not dwindled and in fact it has focused into a singular vision of becoming the man that will overthrow Cole – the once savior and now Tyrant of mankind. Recluse has used his extended lifespan wisely and has created what he believes to be his most perfected formula yet, a serum that should be nearly identical to the magical waters of the fountain of Zeus! Not only does Recluse feel the time is right to take his new serum, he decides he cannot wait any longer and must also open Pandora’s box!

Scene 6 – Web of Resistance
Recluse is unsure if his serum was what changed him or opening Pandora’s box – maybe both! What he does know is that once he opened the box, Cole was no longer the only “super” on the planet. In addition to Recluse fully unlocking his own powers, all over the world hundreds of thousands of new super humans began to surface. In panic, Cole gathered those he felt were most powerful to join with him in maintaining his tyrannical rule. Recluse, continued to recruit all those super (or not) willing to resist the control of Cole. What was once an underground criminal organization, Arachnos, is now a global resistance force! And, who was once known only as Recluse, is now the symbol of resistance and is referred to by the masses as Liberator Recluse!
  18. Hey all!

Well, I tried to make sure and pause long enough to snap a few shots off while I was developing my FArt submission for this month!

I have a pretty elaborate story line for my submission too, but it will only be posted in its entirety once I post the finished piece. Needless to say, when someone commented about a Praetorian version of Lord Recluse on the boards the other day, I about fell out of my chair since that is the subject I had been working on for over a month lol.

I hope these aren't too large for posting, but here it goes:

  19. *ATTENTION*

Friday's "In the Mood" TF will have to be rescheduled for another day.

    Awesome costume Ironik!

Sorry for inconvenience - unexpected RL situation came up tonight.

Vex will have more details about the reschedule later...

  21. Awesome Vid Vex!

Thinking of Comic Con reminded me of when Mr T did a guest appearance at the comic shop I worked at in Highschool. Anyways, I don't have footage of that, but I found this vid which made me laugh pretty hard. Enjoy!
