    new computer

I'll stay out of the cpu/mobo part of the discussion as I'm a rabid Intel fanboi.

For the vid card/psu thing, I would go more like:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817139005 PSU
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130538 Vid

This is really as low as I would go with vid card nowadays. Really, save some extra cash and pick up a gtx 2XX card at the minimum, or a 5-series radeon. Spending $60 on a card today means you're going to be wanting more a year from now. Spend a little more and you can carry your card a lot further. A used GTX 260 216 can be had for about $125-150 and will give you some decent life.

I see what you did there...

You forgot about the "upgrading from ati to nvidia" or the "sticking with the best and getting another nvidia card" options.

  3. Here's my question to you: how often do you tab out of game and do other things while playing? Quads aren't used heavily in majority of games, but where they excel is allowing you to load up a bunch of processes and still have a snappy system.

I will also admit I am all about the big AND fast processors, so I might be a bit biased.
  4. I'm going to go in a serious tangent here, as my spouse had some serious issues with her Kin that didn't seem to affect her other characters (as bad).

What Anti-virus are you running? If you are running the MS Security Essentials, have you added CoH to the exception programs for real time scanning (or any other AV program for that matter)?

She wouldn't crash, but her system would lag to the point it was unplayable, with frame rates dropping below 1 (one) fps and often hanging for seconds at a time.

They are the same size at 10.5". Also, the 200 series has the power pins on the side. The only card that is longer than the 200/400 series is the 5970 at 12.5". It seems 10.5" has become the new standard, though I do like that Galaxy has made their own PCB for the 400 series cards and shortened it up about 3/4" or so. Been awhile since anyone has used something other than reference design.

I already have SLI, and if I could find that item I would try it - perhaps all I need to be able to engage shadows is to turn that other video card on. It is almost unused with CoH most of the time.

It was posted during closed beta, and I'm not sure where those posts go once beta gets opened. Those that have used it haven't reported that great of numbers.

FWIW - I'm running a GTX 285 @ 1920 X 1200 and I can't even get close to turning up the eye candy if I want to run around in the open at all. 6GB RAM, Q6600 @ 3.0GHz. If you want to turn things up, skip the 200 series cards and go Fermi. A single 470 would rip apart anything you have going right now. The initial reviews of the 470 and 480 don't really show what they can do as they are already showing marked increase in performance from driver updates.

I would wait and see where the GTX 460 drops into the lineup here in another month or so. The rumors churning out make me think it's going to be the best bang for the buck nVidia card we're going to see out of Fermi for a bit.

EDIT: Make sure your case can handle the cards, seriously. If you think the 7800's are big, you're gonna be scared of the 200/400 cards. I'll see if I can pull things apart and get you a perspective since I have a 7800 GS, 8800 GTS, and my GTX 285. the 200 series cards need 10.5" of clearance from back plate to the end of the card. There's only about 1/2" clearance in my CM 690 case. I had to "tweak" my GF's case (with a hammer) to get the GTX 260 in her mid tower.

EDIT 2: instead of a picture, I just measured. The 7800 is just shy of 8.5", so if you have another 2.25" if clearance behind your current cards you're golden.

Turns out what you need to do is
    1) kill the ipoint.exe process.
    2) Open the device manager
    3) disable the mouse
    4) enable the mouse

DO NOT open the mouse settings or you will have to repeat this process.
I know I'm bringing back an old thread, but I wanted to post that this issue is still alive and kicking and also in case anyone runs into this problem. Installed 7 on the GF's computer last night. Playing CoH today she noticed this issue. She has a wired MS comfort mouse 3000 and had this problem. Following these steps fixed the problem.

Oddly enough, my ancient MS wheel mouse optical did not have this issue. I swear I'll hold a proper viking funeral for this mouse when it finally dies.
  8. I've noticed with 7 that if there is anything taking a large part of your processor usage, it will stall, if not completely lock up CoH response on that screen. On my system the load time will quadruple if I have anything running that isn't just a low level app (IE - SETI@home). What have you installed in the span since you installed CoH?
  9. Already have most everything maxed before installing 7 settings wise, so no real difference there. The only real change I saw was the fact that 2GB of ram was not enough to play the game and multitask with x64 7. It was laggy switching programs. After installing another 4GB, things move much like that did while on x86 XP. The game is much happier with more ram.
  10. I'm only seeing issue 16 on the site. Where would one find 19 at?

Grats Beefy. I know no one who deserves it more. One of the best guys I've ever met, and true boon to the entire coH community.
  11. I have a question:

I was recently asked if FoN and TI stacked. I had assumed they did, but would like to know for certain. Has this been tested and proven?
  12. BN, can you go back and check on the dark servants version of DN? I have noticed on more than one occasion that it is NOT a single target variant as you suggest it is. I've seen more than once where it does effect other mobs in the area (IE - I let the DS open u pa battle. He opens with DN and all other mobs get teh debuff animations on them)
