  1. Ok....I got some of the Portal Corp portal sounds to go away. Not all though. I used the files listed on page 2 of this thread. It is better...no doubt. Nowhere near as loud now. I actually think I can stand it now.

I got the one second of silence recorded and saved no problem. I named it "silence".

But here is a problem I ran into right away:
    [ QUOTE ]
*You are not making any changes to any files owned/installed by CoH*. Simply put: if any of the following folders already exist then you or a 3rd party put them there. You or the 3rd party would need to handle it on your own.

    - Open the "City of Heroes" folder and create a new folder called "data".
    - Open the "data" folder you just created and add a new folder called "sound".
    - Open the "sound" folder you just created and add a new folder called "ogg".

    [/ QUOTE ]
The first thing I noticed was that a folder called "data" was already in CoH and I didn't put it there.

I took a chance and created a "sound" folder inside that one and a "ogg" folder inside the "sound" folder. That's where I put both the "Peregrine" and "tech" folders for the silence file to go. It seems to have KINDA worked so part of this must be right.

    I used...
    Peregrine\reactor1_loop.ogg
    Peregrine\reactor2_loop.ogg
    Tech\Room3x_loop.ogg
    Tech\spacemachine1m_loop.ogg
    Tech\spacemachine1_loop.ogg
    Tech\Teslaroom1_loop.ogg
    Tech\Teslaroom2_loop.ogg
    Tech\Teslaroom3_loop.ogg
    Tech\Teslaroom4_loop.ogg
    ...in the two folders respectively.

Perhaps the names have changed since that post? (it is an old post)

If/When the redemption/falling system is put into place some or all of these locations could be used to give special missions that would assist in the process of falling or redeeming yourself...maybe for these missions you could even be given a "probationary pass" to travel to your missions solo if you wish. These "passes" would get longer and the help you would gradually gain (access to npc vendors, extra missions, features, etc) would be unlocked as your redemption/fall continues. Eventually you would could choose to stay a "mercenary" one who can travel fairly freely on both the hero and villian side but never with full trust or access on either (you can access certain general npc's on both sides but will have to use your own contacts for certain types of missions...for instance no villian side patron powers because you would be unable to access the patron power arcs but can access the black market, on hero side you will not be able to access wentworths as they will not deal with your kind but will have access to the Ancillary Powers or merc specific ones) and it will be mercenary contacts that will introduce you to general contacts, so each no "tier" of missions will start with a mercenary contact before feeding back into the general pool.

If you chose to completely switch sides you would then be a hero or villian of course and play completely under those rules, still able to be "on probation"/"duress" and use that to start the redemption/falling process over and I do mean from square one. Otherwise welcome to your new life as a hero/villian where although you remain the level you are you gain new stuff by proving your loyalty to your new allegiance.

If you choose to remain a "mercenary" then once you reach a fairly balenced point between red and blue achievement you have access to both and must STAY relatively balenced. A declared mercenary can range between 1/2 red & blue - 1/4 & 3/4 red & blue. This is determined by doing tasks on your designated side. If you get to far past this line on either side you will have to get your "Balence" back or come under suspicion (i.e. the timer will bug you again) on that side and you will have to earn freedom of movement and other stuff back...or decide to fall/be redeemed.

The "Weighting" is as follows (these are examples we could always change the percentages)

"MAYHEM/SAFEGUARD" it is best to alternate these missions as they attract a lot of attention. Each one changes your rating by 1/10.

A trial/TF/Sf will change your rating by 1/4 this will not take effect until after the TF/SF/TRIAL is completed.

    Regular missions 1/100th

    Story Arcs 1/50th

    Special (redemption/fall) story arc 1/4th

    Paper/police band mission 1/100th

Mercenary specific missions -no impact but can be used to unlock mercenary specific content.

    What do you all think?

  3. And extra sweet idea! /signed

I see the lvl restriction has been addressed quickly. Gotta let the lvl 50s in on this goodness.

    I wonder about this:

    [ QUOTE ]
At this time, the team operates as normal, albeit with a villain (if a hero team) or a hero (if a villain team) along for the ride. As with any Sidekicked/Lackeyed character, the Villain under Probation/Hero under Duress receives experience points, salvage drops, influence/infamy, enhancements and recipes. However, there are differences between a Probationary/Duressed member and a Sidekick.

First off, team members cannot trade with the Probationary/Duressed character, the same as with any other Hero/Villain cross-faction team. Further, Probationary/Duressed members can't use Wentworth's or the Black Market, can't use police band radios or newspapers to get missions, and can't use trainers or contacts for levelling, missions or to buy or sell things. They also do not have access to their Base, even via teleport (though they can pass through their Sponsor's base as needed).

    [/ QUOTE ]

Not being able to unload any drops could be a problem. I get nervous anytime I see my salvage or recipes go "red". It's time to sell at that point. (usually before that ponit) What to do about that?
  4. [ QUOTE ]
Regardless of the fact that a badge does or does not contribute to something larger, like an Accolade, makes no difference. The fact is that it should be something earned and not by simply waiting till you are so high that the only effort you expend is time... time to go into a place like the Hollows and blast entire spawns into oblivion with one shot, or time to draw your Broadsword and do a one shot on a level 10.

Make the game interesting, make badge hunting a badge worth owning - never mind the level of the player or the enemy! Make us chase them, let them surrender, let them quake in fear asking for mercy! A badge earned by exploit will never give you the same feeling of achievement as a badge earned the honest way!

    [/ QUOTE ]
    Hey wait...

I remember it used to be said, "If you want to feel super, go hunt some greys" any time someone complained about something not feeling powerful enough for them.

Now we're trying to make greys hard to fight too?
  5. Ok...this just rocks.

It just gets better and better in this game.
  6. [ QUOTE ]
Under your system, no one would use anything but the best sets, and that would be pretty much all that would drop.

    [/ QUOTE ]
    Sounds good to me.

Only the stuff we want is dropping? Cool!
  7. [ QUOTE ]
Could you please improve the the LFG search box. One of the things that is deperately needed is the ability to filter out those that are already in a team. This will cause the lists to not be truncated so much. Also we should be able to search for villians at least in CoOp zones like Pocket D.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I usually filter out stuff by searching by AT and lvl. That helps a lot.

Agree on the ability to co-op search in co-op zones. This gets brought up a lot in RWZ when you have to ask a villain to search the villain ranks for you.

Also, I'm really liking the sound of inspiration conversion. I'm always ending up with a bunch of insps that I don't actually need, when what I really want is (x). Looking forward to trying this out.

How cool to not have to beg "anyone got a wakie?". Much of the time, you'll have 3 of a kind to make one...other times a teammate surely will. Cool! The hospital staffs can take longer coffee breaks.

Question: Would this be 3 of ANY size blue/green/purp/etc to make something?
  10. I'm wondering if this zone will be primarily arcane. I needs more salvage sources!

    NEW ROMAN-STYLE ZONE MAPS (LEVELS 35 - 50)
The Midnighters hold many secrets within their walls, including a highly coveted Ouroboros crystal, enabling them to travel to the far reaches of time. There is a familiar threat in an ancient land and the Midnighters need the help of both Heroes and Villains to stop it. Players step foot upon the ancient land of the Roman Cimeroran Peninsula, where they battle deadly creatures, defend an ancient city and ultimately come face to face with the enemy of time itself. Throughout this journey players uncover the mysteries of power and the origins that guide them today.

    [/ QUOTE ]

First, nice stuff all around. I'm loving the whole attitude and atmosphere in the game now.

Second, my first thought above is: Please tell me these will be archane enemies. (I need more options for the good salvage.)
  13. I actually went into the Hollows for the first time on a lvl 40 character the other day. I was rather proud to see that dark map. I may actually stop avoiding it now.
  14. Yay for Plant control!

So many goodies in the next issue...big thumbs up to the Dev team!
  15. I read through the thread a bit.

    Does this: [ QUOTE ]
    (+Rec, +Def team buff)

    [/ QUOTE ]

Look like the +Rec is for the player while the +Def is for the team? That's the way it strikes me.

Also the 10 hit points thing looks like it will make it more durable at low lvls and getting less durable with each lvl. But the flipside is...would the buff be less useful at lower lvls? I don't know the science on that.

Looks cosmetic....but I like cosmetic things. My only worry is losing my cool pet .0000001 seconds after casting it at lvl 50 when a slight breeze blew on it. That would get so old after a while I wouldn't bother.

I noticed a couple of people talking about how they checked their time. I went to my account and saw nothing like that. It says when the account(s) were created, but nothing about "time played" or anything.

    [ QUOTE ]
Hey, I'm as big a badge-ho as the next guy, but I was surprised to see a badge for debt in the first place. Frankly, those are the badges I would NEVER want to earn.

[/ QUOTE ]I think of Debt Badges as permanent wounds.

    So yeah, me too.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Two points. One, if you're a villain, debt badges are part of the High Pain Threshold accolade... 10% health bonus. I'll happily take a few scars for that prize, and the sooner the better. Its like 10,000,000 paid off though, so gotta actually work at it if you want it before 50. Hey, if you want to snub a very useful accolade... go right ahead.

Second, you've really got to get over your debt fear. Debt is nothing. It pays off so fast even from max, its a joke that they're offering a debt wipe in the first place. The only way to get to 50 without a lot of debt is to be powerleveled by other people (or solo... *snore*)... I'd rather show my scars as someone who worked for it.

Plus some of the most fun in the game involves large amounts of inevitable debt, I don't care what your AT is. Raids drop players like flies, but its so fun, its such a blast and a rush... I mean, heck, if you're sitting there worrying about debt... I can only feel sorry for you, you're missing out.

    [/ QUOTE ]

That's a decent point on villains. However....

Isn't the entire point of wanting more health to keep you from dying? That one doesn't make a lot of sense either. "I must die more so I won't die as much!"

I have no debt fear personally. I just don't like losing. Debt means you weren't good enough. (Not counting computer problems and horrible miss streaks.) I like Tankers and Scrappers because they don't die much and Controllers and Defenders because they prevent death for the entire team. (Yeah...I left out Blasters) A lot of debt makes me feel wimpy, stupid, or both.
  17. [ QUOTE ]
There are too many players already who run around bragging about how much debt they have. A Few minutes playing with them and you realize why they have so much debt. A few more minutes playing with them and their utter lack of Tactic or Common Sense get you debt also.

Some of us Players ROLEPLAY our characters and DO NOT get alot of Debt. We are PROUD of the fact that we dont get Debt. Again, we are ignored and slighted. Rewards to the dumbest and most careless players.

Yeah, I'll just keep muttering "Its a reward, be happy."

    [/ QUOTE ]
I'm completely befuddled why anyone would try to get the debt badges. I take it as a source of pride to NOT have them. I used to never stop bragging about my lvl 50 Blaster with "only" two of them. Many were shocked to learn that. (Not over the bragging part)

Seeing some complain about the debt wipe does bring a smile to my face though. Truly...players will complain about anything. Is there anything easier to get in this game than debt? One could easily say debt is "overpowered" and is "being exploited" by these folks who "aren't using it as intended". (Which of course is "ruining my gaming experience" )
  18. I don't know how to give a one word answer.

I've tried it a couple of times and didn't see what the big deal was. I don't really think about it one way or another. I don't hate it, don't love it. I don't really know anything about it to be honest.

    Does that mean "no"?
  19. [ QUOTE ]
I didn't say they didn't make each other safer, I said they didn't increase each other's damage. They make each other safer via controls, not damage.

The person I was responding too, was posting the tired, BS about damage stacking. Which it does not.

And BTW KB doesn't stack either unless you can get them to hit at the exact same time.

    [/ QUOTE ]
Safer Blasters damage more...so the end result is the same. Keeping mobs on the ground twice the amount of time is stacking.

    [ QUOTE ]
Everyone keeps saying this is nerf-herding. It's not. It's a way to correct the current problems around stacking buffs/debuffs.

    [/ QUOTE ]
    e/ ok sign

It's pretty safe to say each and every nerfherder in history believes they are solving game breaking problems and saving all humanity.
  20. [ QUOTE ]
1 Blaster + 1 Blaster doesn't increase either Blaster's damage beyond their solo ability absent powers like Assault, which is a buff.

    [/ QUOTE ]
I think they do. An energy blaster's knockback will make all the blasters safer. A safe blaster is doing more damage and running less. 2 Energy blasters would be more than twice as effective as just one. That's really the only blaster I know anything about.

So you'll have to nerf stacked knockback too.
  21. [ QUOTE ]
team buffs have a mechanics problem.

    [/ QUOTE ]
    Nah...

No thanks. It's already tough enoug to find teams at times without making people think twice about inviting you because they already have "too many Controllers/Defenders".

Plus, it would be taking away yet another option in the game. Not every team is all one AT....but we can put one together if we want and it's a lot of fun. (I still want to try an all Blaster team sometime.)

This is just more forcing one way to play on everyone. Like how I used to try different kinds of slotting on Phantom Army before ED made only one slotting viable.

    [ QUOTE ]
This makes me wonder about something. The Test server is there to help us avoid making power choices?

That seems to admit there is a need for a way avoid mistakes.

    [/ QUOTE ]

When you normally only get 3 Respecs, do you really want to waste them so hastily, when you can test it out multiple times in the Training Room with only one Respec, saving the others for times of need or boredom? Of course not. And so, the Copy Tool for the Test Server copies your character, respecs and all, so that you may fiddle with the options and not have to make an entirely uninformed choice. All done without fear of screwing over your Live character.

While the primary purpose of the Test Server is not this, it's definitely a good reason to use it. The idea applies to the Patron Pools, as well.

    [ QUOTE ]
Why would it be wrong to have this need fulfilled in a different way than the Test server? A trial period in-game would do the same thing.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Do you really want your permanent characters messed with in such a way?

    [/ QUOTE ]

No "messing". Just the same thing you do on the Test server. It's not wrong to do it on the Test server...so why not just have it in the game? Something like a few hours before the power choice becomes truly permanant. Again...this is not a bad thing because it is actually suggested that you do this on the Test server.
  23. [ QUOTE ]
Anyway, I'm trying to look at the broader picture now. They can't be respecced out of because they're tied to the content. They're tied to the content because this will absolutely slaughter any Portal Corp courtyard, Wolf-farming, Dreck-herding equivalent in CoV. If people PL to 50, they will bypass the story arcs that give them their patron powers. Four patrons, with no way to respec out of one and into the other, means four seperate end games that you can't play on the same character - there's the 'can't see everything on one toon' design principle that we've seen before.

I'm 99% convinced that that's what all this is really about. It's been designed this way as a PLing disincentive.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I like this idea. I've always said there are better ways to stop PL'ing than nerfing the crap out of everything. Much smarter to ask yourself WHY people are PL'ing and give them reasons not to want to do it.
  24. [ QUOTE ]
I think the fact that we're tied to them at all is reason enough to debate the systems merits. I don't really care what they do, to be honest.
The rest of the design doesn't make any difference. It's pretty obvious that once you pick a patron, you're stuck with them.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I wonder if this is necessary because the Patron choice will heavily dictate how the game plays for you? You might be playing completely different from someone who choose a different Patron. Sounds kinda cool in that you could get a different experience every time you went through lvl 40-50.

This might make teaming a problem though...hmmm...just thinking out loud here.
