  1. I can get my hands on a whole catalog of royalty-free music that's actually pretty good, so if I can carve out some time, I might make one.
  2. Here's one of my Brute, Warshield. I thought it was an appropriate place for a photo op, and it's nice and crisp.

  3. Here's one I made for Arachnos, witha bit of a twist. I enjoy using the game lore for background, but I also like to expand it in some way.

Not QUITE Specter level, in that the Specters were the highest authority AT ALL and answered to absolutely no-one, and the operative I have in mind would still work WITH the armed force, rather than separate from it, but that sort of working relationship is what I had in mind.

The reason I didn't open with this and opened with a question on ranks, instead (other than getting my more conventional Major straight), is that I'm fairly certain that is way, way out of the norm in real life. So instead of focusing on something I pretty sure isn't realistic, I wanted to get a sense of what the rank I had in mind for this unrealistic setup actually meant, so even if the premise doesn't work quite like that in real life, at least the details would be about on target.
That sort of thing does happen from time to time for covert ("black ops") soldiers. A perfect real-life example is that of Lt. Col. Robert Howard, whose decorations as Sergeant were modified because of the secret nature of his operations. From what I understand, he took his orders directly from superior officers outside the direct chain of command, what in today's corporate culture would be termed a "dotted line direct report." Officially he gets his orders from his direct superior, but in practice he gets his orders from the General.

My friend's dad had a similar situation when he was with FTD at Wright-Pat. (No, not the florists, the Foreign Technology Division. ) They worked in secret, so they actually received orders from someone other than their direct bosses.

So how likely would it be for a commissioned officer to willingly step out into a fight, rather than standing back in his command centre and commanding? Movies seem to show Lieutenants rolling out with their soldiers, but Colonels tend to stay behind. Then on the other hand, we have CNC: Generals' Colonel Burton, who knifes people and blows up buildings... Is he a real Colonel or did the name just sound cooler with Colonel in front of it? Remember, he's a throwback to Red Alert's Tanya, whose title in that game is "Special Agent." I think she was supposed to be CIA, but I don't remember.
It largely depends on the circumstances (mainly combat) and the era. In the US, there were a lot fighting Generals and Colonels through the years, decreasing as we get to the modern era. For example, Colonel Robert Gould Shaw (see the movie Glory) and General George Armstrong Custer, both fought in the Civil War at those ranks.

However, the most decorated US soldier of WWII was Army Captain Matt Urban who was often in the thick of battle. The two other most decorated soldiers were Army Private Audie Murphy (WW II) and Army Sergeant Robert Howard (Viet Nam). During WWII, Murphy was promoted up through the ranks until he became a 1st Lieutenant. He fought in battle at each rank level.

Lt. Col. William Darby was responsible for establishing the Army Rangers, and fought in combat at that rank. A couple years later he was killed in action while a General, after assuming command when the Brigadier General he was serving under was likewise killed.

In WWII, General Frank Merrill of "Merrill's Marauders" fame was a fighting general in the newly-established Army Rangers. (I see his commemorative sign all the time here in New Hampshire.) It should also be noted that Merrill's Marauders were the source of stories like The Dirty Dozen. That's because a number of the soldiers who volunteered did so to get out of the stockades or jails and went on dangerous, out-of-the-ordinary missions. So sometimes the movies do have a basis in reality.

If we don't get the two zones of space station and moon+moonbase, at the least I'd like to see the addition of three or four new tilesets for maps. With none of them being caves, please.

I'm hoping it will be like MA and SS, where we'll be able to choose different animations. I'd certainly make a character who used the flashier animations, but I also agree that a more subdued workmanlike version would be excellent to have, as well. I would build characters around each of those concepts.
  8. I'd think that a couple extra slots per server would be the best asnwer, especially for the EU players because they have fewer choices. I couldn't imagine being limited by those few servers, with my altitis.

I have a couple servers that have all the free slots filled with characters I don't want to delete, like Virtue and Guardian, because I play on them quite a bit. I could probably delete extraneous characters from most of the other servers, but would prefer not to.
  9. Since GR looks to be all Praetoria all the time (which I am totally cool with, even though it oddly stops at level 20, apparently), I'm hoping that I17 will have two major new zones: the space station and moon. Along with attendant powers, like ray guns, as well as costumes, like spacesuits, both modern and retro.

And I want to actually *be* on the moon, as in outdoors, with 1/6th gravity (non-Suppression Super Jump all the time!). It would also be cool to have a moonbase, of course, but having *just* a moonbase would be lame, because then it'd be like being inside any generic tech map in Paragon. That would be dullsville, Daddy-O. So we definitely need both moonbase and outdoors on the moon's surface.
  10. Win. Definitely add it to the Best Costume thread.
  11. Excellent patch.

The name thing in particular was a weird bug. Sometimes it would even show *my* character's name instead of the other person's. I recall that happening a few years ago as well, but it's always weird to see yourself in two places at once.

The alternate Martial Arts animations allow just that - the creation of more of a brawler-style fighter. Which ended up fitting one of my concepts perfectly.
I hope this doesn't mean they are going to forswear a street fighter set, because I'd love to make a Scrapper(/Tank/Brute) who is a ghetto god back alley brawler.

On a related note, I changed Quickthorn's spines from the fugly originals to the supercool metal spikes, and now he looks just as I had imagined during his creation five years ago. The original spines were so repulsive to me that I didn't play him for the first couple years after his creation. Now he just looks awesome.

SS too? My my! I will have to log in Minotaurus and take a looksee.

I have long (as in 4 years) had Elvis as an alternate costume for Ironik, so I switched all the attacks over on that costume. With a gold color, they look awesome. That was a fun little Easter egg.
  22. What are you guys talking about? I re-colored Ironik's attacks and they all looked the same. Are you saying we can choose the animations now? Can we do that with other powers besides Martial Arts?

Edit: ohhhh.... I see them now. Cool.

    And what about other powersets?
  23. Ah, thanks.

Do you know if making a different group for custom bosses increases the percentage of memory allotted? I suspect it will, but I hope not.
