Same here. If I can get my daughter to sleep by then, I will join up. Character name is Skerik, lvl 41 SD/WM tanker.
-
It has been mentioned above, but don't underestimate the importance of mobility when tanking. Patrols and adds will come out of nowhere, and even the best groups get split up.
While it feels cool to go up against a dozen or more mobs at a time, I find nothing as satisfying as swooping in and saving a blaster's neck from the group of enemies chewing his face.
So, Stone is not for me, as it doesn't fit how I like to play. That doesn't mean that it won't fit your playstyle and be what you want. From what I have seen, there are no terribly gimped or totally overpowered sets. You just need to read up and figure out what works best for what you want. -
Thanks for the tips guys! Very helpful. This game is quite a bit deeper than it was when I last played, so this is all very helpful

Hey guys, lots of good info in this forum, and I just had a few questions. My first toon after returning to the game after a few years is a lvl 32 SD/Mace tanker. I have been using a fairly standard build, although I will need to do some tweaking when I get closer to 50. I am happy with current performance. I don't put out a ton of damage, but I am not squishy. Have run several TFs and have done very well.
Okay, questions:
1. Should I be spending reward merits to get better IOs as I level, or should I bank them for when I hit 50?
2. As I get to later levels, is there content that I should stay away from until I "gear up," or should I just jump into what is available.
3. I just recently learned about Hero/Villain Merits. I assume that I need to complete 10 tip missions to get one. Is that right?
If anyone has any general tips about what I should be doing to get ready for later levels or any other insights, they would be appreciated.
Thanks! -
The Digital You
Who are you most well known as in-game? I mean character, but maybe you have an inappropriate nickname, and that could be fun too.
Currently, Skerik. Back in the day, Green Wind.
What have you been doing in-game lately?
Leveling as quickly as possible, primarily by running missions. Trying to make new friends. Trying to get into as many TFs as possible along the way.
What do you enjoy the most in-game?
TFs and large group play. My first main (Green Wind) was a blaster. Since returning to the game, I have been tanking all the way and loving it.
Praetoria, Mercy Island, or Atlas: Which is your preferred landing destination?
Atlas
How long have you been playing City of Heroes?
I played for over a year, ending four years ago (time flies). Since then, I played WoW in a casual raiding guild, with a little dabbling in Champions. Because of real life interference with raiding, a general feeling of malaise towards WoW, and a fond memory of CoH, I came back about a month ago. Loving every minute so far.
Why did you originally choose to play and/or stay on Infinity?
I was looking for a mid-population server. Infinity is almost always yellow.
What are your plans for "Freedom"?
I think I will go VIP, though not sure yet. Really depends on what being VIP gets you. Hoping to see a big influx of new players.
The Real You
What is best in life?
My daughter.
What is your favorite movie?
Die Hard or Blazing Saddles. Depends on the mood.
What is your favorite book?
Currently, Chronicles by Bob Dylan. First real book I have read in awhile. Also a big fan of the book by David Cross.
Outside of CoH, what are your favorite games?
Although it pains me to say it, probably WoW.
Sports: Yes? No? Favorites? Teams? Players? Do you play any yourself?
(I don't know if you know this, but the Dallas Mavericks just won the NBA Championship, and with a lockout currently going on, they could be considered the champs for quite a long while. Expect to be reminded of that almost constantly.)
I played a lot of basketball back in the day. From Michigan, so I always root for the Pistons, Lions, and Tigers.
Care to share the vision that is you? Pictures from 6-7 years ago of me can be found here un/fortunately (depending on perspective).
I would, but I don't have time right now to figure out how to.
What keeps you from playing City of Heroes for gross stretches of time? (Kids, jobs, spouses, other hobbies, fill in the ______.)
And finally, have you blurred the lines between my two neat categories? Do you play in-game with anyone you know "IRL," to use one of those dreaded stereotypical abbreviations that haunt the gamers' reputation?
Not currently. Had a few RL friends in WoW, and I think I have a RL friend in CoH. Trying to find him. -
Hey guys, just wanted to jump back on for a quick update and to solicit you all.
My little tanker is now up to level 16. Grouped up a few times, but mostly solo play so far. I should be on a few hours on Friday night (maybe tonight or Saturday too). My goal for the weekend is to find a Supergroup for a little more social interaction and teaming.
Before rolling the dice in-game, I thought I would check again on here to see if anyone is part of an SG that is recruiting or at least accepting new members. FWIW, I intend to stay fairly casual (RL comes first), I love running in groups, and I am pretty easy-going. I am still re-learning the game, but have come pretty far in a few weeks.
If it sounds like I may fit with your SG, please post or PM me who I should speak with in-game. I am happy to run some missions before joining to make sure that we are a good fit.
I will warn you that I am still getting use to the UI and the communication tools. That sometimes makes communication a little awkward. I promise that I am not an ***, it just may seem like it as I figure out what the hell I am doing. -
Thanks for the tips, and I will definitely join those channels. A lot of info on the boards, some current some older. Good to know where to start.
Haven't actually grouped up with anyone since I have been back. Only been on for a little while at a time so far. Didn't want to say "Hey, let's group up...see you later!" I will be on for some longer stretches in the near future, so that should change.
I do remember the pickup group experience in this game to be way more fun than what it has been lately in WoW, so I am definitely looking forward to that. -
Dropping a line to introduce myself and maybe scam my way onto a few teams or maybe a Supergroup.
I played CoH for a year or so, last logging on maybe four years ago. My main back then was a Blaster. As my interest in the game was waning, I went on vacation. When I came back, my Supergroup was disbanded, and I threw in the towel.
After that, I spent most of the next four years playing WoW. Lately, that has become a drag, as real life keeps me from raiding on a regular basis, and the grind of dailies and doing the same old dungeons again was wearing on me.
I am a superhero geek at heart, and I really enjoy the combat mechanics for CoH. So here I am. Within the last week, I rolled a Shield/Mace Tanker on Infinity, and I have been having a rather laid-back good time. I am only level 11 now, but I will be in the mood for grouping up pretty soon, so I figured it is time to put myself out there.
My schedule is very erratic. I typically only get on 2-4 times a week for a few hours at a time. When I am around though, I should be a pretty good contributor to a team (unless it's pvp). If there are any Supergroups out there that are mostly adult, casual-friendly, and have a good sense of humor, I would love to join up.
About me:
Global: @Green Wind
Main: Skerik
Real Life: 34 yrs. old, one kid (sometimes causes interruptions), live in the Northeast and mostly on between 8:30 and 11:30 Eastern, sometimes on in the afternoon on weekends.
Look forward to seeing some of you in game!
