Good luck and safe journeys Ex, please feel free to stop back in any old time -
The video card length can be very troublesome indeed, especially since it's oftentimes hard to tell that it will cause problems until you actually try to get the card into your rig
(Curse you, ill-placed capacitors!!)

is this screwiness just for coh?

For the most part, yes.
Right before I bought my 8800gts, and this was a major reason I did so, I was playing The Witcher. With whatever Cat driver I had at the time and the X1950XTX, I was getting a lot of graphics issues. Cleaned out all the ATI software, installed the 8800gts, and all those issues were gone.
That may have been Witcher specific just like so many of the issues here are CoH/V specific.
Don't worry about what I said about your screenshot. It looks fine and you probably won't notice any difference if you hop cards.
ATI users need to know the following for this game:
Disable Bloom
Disable Depth of Field
Keep Water FX Off or Low
Disable Desaturation FX
Allow the CCC and not the game to manage FSAA and AF.
This may or may not change in the future.

The Witcher uses a highly modified version of the NWN engine, which is OpenGL based, just like CoX, and AMDs problematic OpenGL support rears it's ugly head again.
How are you liking the game now that you've gone Green?
I held out on an initial purchase due to reported technical issues.
Now i'm glad i did, as they've announced a sort of Director's Cut version to be released 09/16/08 -
Just as an FYI to potential shoppers, the 8800GTs are on the way out, being replaced by the 9800GTs, which are the exact same chips using a 55nm fab process.
Also,

At stock speeds, the 9600GT and the 8800GT are extremely close in raw power
Not disagreeing with your basic point jg, just wanted to point out that the 9600GT should not be summarily dismissed. -
Eh?

The 9600GTs acquit themselves quite well against the 8800GT -
Nope.
I got a couple of nice in AP this morning. -
I saw the word "sequels" in the press release, so i'm automatically intrigued.....
Thank you Cryptic, for all you've done.
Best of luck to those not coming along to continue the ride.
All hail our NCSoft overlords!! -
My dark/dark can tank.
'nuff said. -
+1 again on the neck sleeve/full helmet issue.
Very, very annoying
