There's no reason to use SecuRom for an MMO (not that there's ever a justifiable reason to use it for anything), so I hope that this announcement is something they can use, not something they will use on everything, and specifically this client. Because it will, at best, be a big warning in recommendations I make.
[/ QUOTE ]
From that announcement, it seems that the piece of software that is under the SecureROM is the "Cider" program (aka Windows Emulator for the Mac) itself, not City of Heroes specifically.
[/ QUOTE ]
But the Cider code is wrapped around the PC code, so to a Mac user, they're one and the same. Again, I'm hoping that in the process of setting up for the process, you can choose to run SecuROM free. Because even if the limitations aren't bad, on Windows at least, it installs a program that remains even if you uninstall the original program. I don't want that malware on my PC, and if it does the same on the Mac, I don't want it on my Mac either. -

Psyte: I don't trust TUAM anyway.

I followed the links to a Transgaming press release, so they were right about this. -

I haven't heard anything about that one - where did you hear this vicious rumor?
[/ QUOTE ]
I've found the SecuROM rumor in this article:

A thought occurred to me...when doing an ouroboros arc with "No travel powers", will the port-to-mission be considered a travel power? Probably should, but it would have made those runs a lot faster.

But they don't get the normal Good vs. Evil goodies of the jump pack, the Pocket D teleporter, and the justice and sinister costumes.
And while it'll be the package that Mac people are pointed to...a new PC user could get that package and download the PC client, while a Mac user wanting the old GvE goodies could buy the old package and download the Mac client.
I'm a mac user who will be switching to running the game on his Mac (probably...my PC is newer and has a better video card than my Mac, so I may stick with the PC), and I won't get those goodies automatically because I'm using the client, as I understand it.
[/ QUOTE ]
I dont see why you wouldnt get the goodies. You'll keep your toons with all thier stuff I'd imagine.
You will most likley be able to buy emac client and have all the goodies added to each character and get an extra months subscription like Good vs evil or DVD collectors work.
~
Good news for mac users, even if it brings out all the OS tripe about whats better.
~
Not real pleased about more micro payments, espically as this one will be most likley be seen as 'needed' to completing TFs quick and all that. If it has a short recharge time it could really change a few dynamics around, and if short enough i can see less people picking recall friend....
It is how the good vs evil extra items were done, so it isnt anything new. (and damn that jump pack & pocket d thing are useful)
[/ QUOTE ]
You miss my point.
Should I, a Mac using person with an existing account decide NOT to purchase the Mac good vs. evil package, but instead just download the new Mac client and run it, it's free, but no new goodies. I probably will buy the package and get the goodies, but it's a choice. But my Mac using friend George, who doesn't have an account yet, will buy that package and get the goodies. -

l take that bet (although I'd get slapped for insider information) since I know there is more awesome yet to come...

It's not a bad start! -

Isn't OS X based on Linux?
[/ QUOTE ]
Um, no.
OS X is based on FreeBSD UNIX (with a completely unique GUI). Linux was another version of UNIX. -

Done. And when CoH for Mac goes out of closed beta, you can all expect an All-New All-New Guide to Running CoH on a Mac.
[/ QUOTE ]
Probably going to be a lot simpler.
But one thing that will have to come up a lot in Technical Issues and Bugs is, Are you running Mac or PC? -
[ QUOTE ]
Won't run on the MacMini, since it has Intel GMA 950 graphics.
[/ QUOTE ]
Most MacBooks, other than the ones from late 2007 and after, also use Intel GMA 950. -
The Mac OS is based on BSD UNIX, which shares little if any code with Linux.
-
Joule, if you check the preorder options in the link, all that is confirmed, including the one month. And it's the normal price for the game these days.
-
The one piece of information that I looked up in the System Profiler was the video card involved (ATI Radeon X1600). Hmmm, probably should have mentioned just 128 MB VRAM.

Possibly dumb question: Is this going to be a separate retail box? Or will the new versions of GVE come with both and somehow differentiate the serial numbers (or change the included goodies altogether?).
[/ QUOTE ]
From what they've said, they won't actually be a retail box, it will only be available digitally from Transgaming's online store or from the NCSoft online store. It is separate from the PC GvE, so buying the Mac game won't give you the Jump pack or other current GvE goodies.
I would presume, if this does well, that future retail boxes would have both clients in the box. -
Stark, you raise a good point. They did say you don't have to open a new account, but do we need to buy the package anyway? Good question.
If you go to the preorder link it's $20. -

Please use this thread to discuss the below announcement
# Mission Teleporter Power - Players can save time and get right into the action by teleporting directly to their active mission.
# Exclusive Valkyrie Costume set - Costume pieces include two varieties of wings, a cape, a skirt/kilt, pants, boots, shoulders, chest, gloves, belts, and helmet with multiple details.
[/ QUOTE ]
Exclusive costume sets based on what variety of computer you happen to own? That is incredibly freaking lame. Oh, but you can buy them if you don't have a Mac. Meh.
You know, I'm all for opening up the game to more platforms, but locking people out of game content based on what hardware they've chosen to spend upwards of $1000 dollars on for the most part is infuriating. Or are you going to be providing exclusive items to PC users free of charge that Mac users can chose to buy?
I'm having a hard time coming up with civil language for how obnoxious this decision is.

Well, the announcement just hit Macworld.com

Isn't "popular" in that press release a little kind?
;p
[/ QUOTE ]
It's hard to argue that it isn't the most popular comic book MMO. -
Stonedog, when Transgaming does a "conversion", they mostly wrap up the software with a variant on wine, that they call Cider. So it's not a major rewrite, and I suspect you'll have the same experience if you run the client under Transgaming's Cedega.

Does anyone know how to get this news posted on Apple's official game news page? apple.com/games/
It really needs to be posted there so the largest crowd can see the good news.
Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't this make CoH only the third MMO playable in the Mac OS? The other two I know of being EVE and Runescape.
[/ QUOTE ]
Blizzard has always support the Mac with its products, so WoW was availalble on the Mac from day one. -
[ QUOTE ]
Now that you guys are working with Transgaming is there a Linux version in the future? I'd really love to stop dual booting my computer just to play CoX.
[/ QUOTE ]
As I understand it, when Transgaming brings a game to the Mac, it mostly just wraps the game up with the same code that's in Cedega. So if you pick up Cedega, it should be about the same. -
Excellent, I am in for this! (Mac user since 1984)

One of the things that's always bugged me re: the launcher that, instead of using your default browser, it always opens up linked pages in IE instead.
Take for example the Halloween event being advertised on the launcher. When I click the picture, it opens up IE7 instead of my default browser, Chrome.
I know this has been brought up several times in the past, but since we're on the subject, isn't it time someone cleaned up the HTML on the page to use a user's browser of choice?
[/ QUOTE ]
My guess is that the updater uses embedded IE to display a web page there. So when it opens a link from within it, it's opening up the link in a new window in the "same" browser. Which might be tricky to have it open it in another browser. (File this under "a little knowledge is a dangerous thing.") -
Folks, the back and forth isn't helping.
Clearly, there was a bug that made the Buster badge far harder to get than intended. Whether the badge was bugged is a semantic issue, but the process of earning the badge was. They say they can't do it. We can believe them or not, but it's not going to change.
