But it remains that the perception of the "goodies" will always be worse than that of a "baddie" right from the start, simply based on that odd quirk of human psychology.
So you're saying that blueside people are being perceived as jerks because they are not adequately living up to their roles as superheroes in a video game?

I guess it would be helpful to know what people mean by "jerks". Rudeness? Unwillingness to work properly with the team? Selfishness?

That's pretty crass for this discussion. I'm not going to go into it, but lemme say that there are very rational and very moral reasons to reject Christianity.
  2. Why would that be? What would be your explanation for it?

LOL geeze. I speak out against art theft and coincidentally the mods take an interest in this thread. If you don't know where to look for the book, YOU'LL NEVER FIND IT NOW!

For the Livestream Thursday I was thinking of talking about a project I mentioned to Katfood. Essentially, designing a visual look for the distinct fighting styles of Feral Kat and Feral Kitty. The way I intend to go about this is by developing some representative sillhouettes of each's fighting style, without going into detailed drawings. I'll be basing this on my experience with Eskrima (Filipino stick and knife fighting) and other martial arts.

I could crash and burn horribly, lol we'll see. Same time as usual: Thursday 10:15 pm est
  4. I don't know if this is the proper use of the term when applied to art, but I'm going to throw it out there anyway: plagiarism. In an academic setting it can be grounds for expulsion. Professionally, it's grounds for getting fired. I'm pretty sure people get banned from the major digital art sites for getting caught doing this.

The "source" artist did not give his permission to have his work copied and modified in this way. I'm sure he worked his butt of for years to get to that level and would not want people using his art as stock material to trace and cobble together in a new image.
None of us should want that. Calling it an homage is a weak excuse. An homage would be taking the idea behind that image and restating it in different visual terms, not copying it literally and slapping different costumes on the figures.

I don't think this is typical for Juggy's work. It's an old image I think indicative of a developmental stage. Nevertheless, understand it for what it is. If people get nothing else out of this thread, understand that this is not ok.

Btw, yes copying masterworks has always been a staple of art instruction. That does not involve modifying the work and putting your name on it.
  5. Gratz Foo! Now you can show your special lady friend that you're a champ in more than just..um....uh.........

Where will it end, exactly? If I'm doing a study of a model in Figure Drawing, is THAT swiping?
Lol no. But imagine you did the study and then take it back to your dorm room. Your roommate has the same assignment but didn't go to class that day. So she sits down and copies your picture, without ever having seen the model, and then makes a few superficial changes in order to make it her own.
  7. I quoted that bit from the tutorial for a reason:
    Quote:
It's a fine line between stealing and swiping IMO.
Here's the deal: swiping means stealing. It's like saying "it's a fine line between conning someone and ripping them off." The most value neutral phrase I can apply here is copying, possibly tracing since the copying is so faithful down to the placement of the veins and the position of the fingers. In cg that's generally described with the derogatory term paint-over, because it lacks creativity and the end result is so below the quality of the source material. Whatever the intention, I don't consider it an hommage because any point of interest in the piece draws directly from the source material.

Artists use reference all the time. This is where ethics come in to play. If you take, for example, a fashion spread and paint a costume over the model and change the background--you are appropriating someone else's work. Their skill in lighting, composition, the model's skill in posing, makeup, whatever. It happens so frequently, that people start to lose the sense that it's wrong.

Proper use of reference is this: you get an idea or direction to make a picture. You sketch it out. You refine the drawing. Then, when you are assessing what you've done
you look at reference to help correct the various flaws that may have entered in to the work. Sometimes at this point I realize "hey this looks a lot like that picture from the book I have on my shelf!" Then guess what? I CHANGE THE PICTURE OR START OVER.

Using reference is smart and everyone should do it until they no longer need to. Copying or literal lifting from someone else's work is not the same. It goes back to the "thin line" comment. Stay as far away as you can from that line.
  8. Maybe this tutorial will shed some light on the similarity: http://www.cohguru.com/forum/showthread.php?t=7448

I pick a pose (whether swiped or not) and work around it in some type of sketch. Altering what I want... sometimes a lot, sometimes not much. It's a fine line between stealing and swiping IMO. I take poses from real life shots and other comic artists (or I even get my wife to pose). I figure as long as I put in hours of effort, people will respect my choice.

    "Hey Swiper no swiping!!!
    Awwww, man!!"

Thanks for coming guys! Sorry about the technical difficulties.

In terms of recordings, this one is probably pretty bad to watch because the comments were flying and I responded a lot to the chat. So the voice over is very rambling with random jumps to different topics because of things I was responding to in the chat.

In summary, there were two main points I was trying to get across:

    1. Internal logic/plausibility. Despite the fact that you might be doing art of exagerrated genres (superhero, fantasy, etc.) any time you can tie your image into real world conditions and practice it will make the picture richer. In contrast to winging it, which often leads to a loss of credibility in the image.

    2. Use of style in visual communication. Not so much style as cool factor or overal look, but as a mode of communication. Mixing different representational paradigms from various types of media (eg.comic book + advertising) in order to say something about a character. Or as a visual shorthand so that you don't need to slavishly render realistic details in the background when the focus may be one specific thing.

Suichi did you see the ad posted in my gallery? I'm going to be talking about the lead in page tonight if I get to it.

Well I'm similar. I usually just draw things and move them around until I think they look good. A lot of times, I resort to some formal idea of composition when I can't seem to get soemthing to look right. So then I'll go back and check what I've done in terms of whatever formal rules come to mind. I'll try to offer up some suggestions on composition, but its something I struggle with myself.

I picked a bunch of pieces from a handful of people to discuss. The overall theme that seems to be present is logical/internal consistency in the pieces. What elements seem plausible and grounded in reality? What aspects seem to break with reality? Also, how does style impact believability and immersion?

Even if you can't make the live broadcast, they're all recorded on the channel. You can just go to the page (livestream.com/bwbabble) and watch the recordings uner the latest videos section.

Ok, I'll spend some time talking about some of the pieces I've seen from some of the other art regulars here. Some people might take offense--that's not my intention, but the hell with it, lol. Anyone can feel free to rip apart anything I've done as long as there's an actual point to it. I'll also talk a bit about the stylization I've been using recently.

    Hey guys,

I'm game to do a livestream tomorrow night at the usual time (10:15 pm est). But I don't anything in particular in mind to talk about. Any suggestions?
  17. I can't really find any good images of his male characters online, but Mark Schultz is very good for drawing both male and female figures. More of a lyrical, old school style.

Aaaaargh, once more my computer experiences trauma (immediately after speaking to Kat, again!?!). I somehow picked up that antivirus software PRO bug. I finally got rid of the damn thing but now I got no sound. The device drivers for the sound card say they're working properly. The little sound bar at the bottom of the screen says no audio output device is installed. Any thoughts?

    Sleep and Draw?

I do my best work half-asleep. Sometimes I've drawn things very quickly without really even paying attention to where I was putting the lines and they turned out better than I could plan. I think a large part of being a creative artist is being able to achieve a blend between conscious (linear) and subcosncious (associative) modes of thought.

I thought the thing in his hand was a banjo at first. Then a giant bubble blowing wand made of gold. I see now that he got his hand stuck on a giant melting condom, and a group of friendly snails are crawling up the edge to help him get free.
